Hi, no homeland and occupation items don't currently have any effect unfortunately.

To get a good starting point I would get the "Human (Base)" from the wiki compendium, Bestiary, Adventurers

That way you have all the standard hitlocations, skills runes etc to start with

Also, check the BRP forums from the Chaosium site. In the RQ VTT forum, I have a post with some notes about how I did some customization for my campaign.

Thanks, I was already using the base human template. I'll give it another go and see how far I get.
