hi everyone! i have a weird problem with my discord server (community server for my streaming presence). i have an Announcements, Etc. category with 3 channels in it. all 3 permissions are sync'd to the category with no per-channel overrides. the category has View Channel and Read Message History forced on for the everyone role, but one of my Admins can't see one of the channels.

again, all 3 channels' permissions are sync'd to the category. so, theoretically, if this person can see one channel they should be able to see all three.

i tried moving the offending channel out of the category, waiting 10 seconds, then moving it back in to force permissions to be recalculated. that didn't work.

i tried having him leave the server, rejoin, go through the "accept the rules" process, then re-granted him Admin rights (which shouldn't matter since everyone can both view the channel and reach message history). that didn't work either.

this person fully exits discord nightly so it shouldn't be a weird caching issue. but i'm out of ideas. is there anything else i could be checking?

Don't worry, it's not just Discord that encounters it, it's why Amazon doesn't allow mobile device to sign up to Prime because of this exact issue with how mobile ecosystems don't allow not just anyone to say use X account, mobile platforms are kind of dumb that way but it's all by design (Never designed with this level of cross platform stuff)

The only ones without the problems are Apple and Google since their apps are a one account, one payment method, done and dusted. Multi accounts is just that limitation of "smart phone" ecosystems

It seems roles can't take off perms from the everyone role, so if I give the perm "read channels" to everyone, I can't make a Muted role for example

Which means I have to use a Member role with the perms everyone has, while giving no perms to everyone. But then, all the channels are considered hidden for everyone in the server's settings and thus I can't select which ones are visible by default for the members

So I'm not surprised by Minecraft.

The Chrome stuff, that almost makes sense if you have a master password on your password vault. I used to do that on Firefox but then got annoyed by having to enter it all the time so I took that off

I could not imagine Thunderbird making me sign into every email account I use every time the computer restarted. The whole point of the email client is to not have that burden.

But the key detail is, from 2023 through most of 2025, my desktop client for this account did not make me sign in every boot.

If it was always like that and I expected that as normal behavior, then I may not be as pissy, but knowing that Discord has the capability of keeping me signed in, and this sign out trouble stuff only happened once the "discordhandoff" links tried to open up in my firefox and this discord helper executable is asking for admin permissions, I knew it's related to that crap.

As for Discord, it can happen if you don't have a static IP from the ISP and it looks too fishy or invalidation, which ever is first
But the difference between Discord and Steam is night and day.... Discord is a live service that expects clients to be alive and healthy. Steam on the other hand isn't rebuilt from the ground up every week or month whatever their update schedule is

So I look at my history. And it almost looks plausible! It shows I have 7 active sessions for my home city on Windows. So you think, well, maybe it does see so many different IP addresses for my city and can't differentiate that it's the exact same client. Maybe. But then, I look, and it shows I have a VPN-located sign in location for my mobile. And I have changed that 12 times this week to different cities and countries. And yet it still only shows one session on mobile. While my Windows stuff dates back to multiple different sessions in the last month. If it was a matter of just the IP address, you would expect I would have many more mobile entries than desktop entries in my history.

(Rather than history, it's "current sessions" I suppose is the better description.)

tl;dr: Mobile doesn't have this unrecognized client behavior, and that app version is years old.

A couple thoughts for trying to stop discord updates. Well, in %AppData%\Local\Discord there is an Update.exe I just deleted. And I can also set up a script to delete any directories that appear there besides what seems to be the newest one ⁨⁨app-1.0.9222⁩⁩; I imagine it tries to write these new folders and would fall back on an old one if a new one isn't found, so we'll give that an approach.
