Starting today, we’re rolling out the ability to send Voice Messages in DMs, GDMs, and servers with fewer than 200 members on mobile.

🎙️ Voice Messages are a great way to hear a friend’s Voice and have a more personal conversation without the stress of starting a “formal” Voice call. You never know if someone’s too busy to take an impromptu call or join a server’s Voice channel, but with a quick Voice Message, they’ll still be able to listen to your voice on their own time.

📤 Sending a Voice Message on Discord is as easy as pressing a button (literally)! The next time you’re in a Direct Message, Group DM, or server with fewer than 200 members on mobile, you’ll see a new microphone icon next to your emoji button. Hold it down, and you’ll quickly start recording your message. Once you’re done recording, just let go of the recording button and your message will immediately be sent to your friend!

If Voice Messages are available in the server you manage you can choose to turn them off. To do so, go to Server Settings > Roles and navigate to the Send Voice Messages toggle.

Hey @everyone,

Since 2015, every Discord username has been cAsE sEnSitIvE and had a number attached to it called a discriminator (e.g., #0001). This lets you have the same username as someone else as long as you have different discriminators or different case letters. However, this also means you have to remember a set of 4-digit numbers and account for case sensitivity to connect with your friends.

✨ We wanted to make it easier for you to identify and add your friends while preserving your ability to use your preferred name across Discord. So, we are removing discriminators and introducing new, unique usernames and display names. ✨

New usernames are lowercase, alphanumeric, limited to certain special characters, and do not have discriminators, making them easier to remember, read, type, and share. Now, rather than having to remember “PhiBi#8936,” you just say "I'm phibiscool" and that’s it. Your new username will be unique to you, and when friends try to add you there won’t be any mistakes of the wrong discriminator or incorrect letter casing.

Display names are what’s shown both to your friends and in communities. Think of them as server nicknames that work globally across Discord. You can change it whenever you want, and it can be whatever you want, including special characters, as long as it follows our Community Guidelines https://discord.com/guidelines. If a username you were eyeing gets taken before you can claim it, no worries — you can still use it as a Display Name.

📩 When you’re eligible to change your old Username and claim a New Username, you’ll be notified in-app. The older your Discord account, the sooner you will become eligible to pick a new username. 📩

We're big fans of apps and bots that can bring fun activity to servers! This week, we’ve announced four new apps.

Motivation: Your daily dose of affirmations and positive vibes, complete with commands to infuse your space with inspirational quotes
Memrise: Learn a new language through Discord, either solo or with fellow server members
Cappuccino: A literal conversation starter—share a question as a prompt and responses get collected, then turned into a summary
Chani: The astrology app that helps you get to know fellow server members and what the stars hold for you

You’ll find these and a nearly endless amount of possibilities over in the App Directory. To explore everything available, select any server and open App Directory.

Hey Town Hall,

Starting today, users will become eligible to update their usernames over the coming weeks on a rolling basis.

When you are eligible to update your usernames, we will notify you in the app, so make sure you are on the latest client.

When updating your username, make sure to check out the permitted below into consideration. You can change your username after you update from the old username should you make an error, but this will allow another user to select the previous username.

Permitted characters for new usernames:

• Latin characters (a-z)
• Numbers (0-9)
• Certain special characters such as Underscore ( _ ) and Period ( . )

We're here with an update to make it more clear how we categorize the different types of servers, how to recognize them, and what you can expect in those spaces.

Friend Server
Friend Servers are invite-only spaces designed to discuss, connect, and share with your friends or smaller groups. Invite links in Friend servers will expire at a maximum of 30 days, though previously created non-expiring links will remain active and functional.

Friend Servers who wish to have access to Community features https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/articles/360047132851-Enabling-Your-Community-Server may opt-in to become a Community Server at any time in server settings.

Community Server
Community Servers are spaces designed for people to share, connect, and learn from others all over the world who share common interests. Moderators in Community Servers have access to tools like Server Insights, Raid Protection, Rules, and Onboarding.

Becoming a Community Server does not mean that anyone can find or join your server. Prospective members have to be sent an invite link.

Updating Server Badging
In order for users to know what type of server they’re in, we’ve introduced badges for Community Servers.

We will display a distinct server badge if the server is a
Community Server
Discoverable Community
Partnered Server
Verified Server

Hovering over the badge will provide more detailed information about the server type, whether anyone can join the server, and the Boost level. Communities that previously had the “Public” tag will now have a “Discoverable Community” badge (denoted by a globe).

New Perks, New Possibilities!

Hey there! We've got an exciting Server Boosting update that has officially rolled out to all servers.
What's New: We're giving you more ways to customize your server with additional perks! Use available Boosts to unlock these perks directly — no server level required.

** New Server Perks:**

• Server Tags (3 Boosts): Custom 4-character tag for members to rep your server everywhere on Discord!
• Enhanced Role Styles (3 Boosts): Gradient and holographic role effects that make certain roles stand out!
• Note: Each perk needs to maintain 3 Boosts to remain active. If removed, perks will be disabled.

** How It Works:**

• Additional perks use dedicated Boosts that are separate from your server level. You'll need available Boosts — i.e., Boosts already applied to your level won't count. Your existing level perks will stay the same!

If you’re excited about these new perks, consider Boosting your favorite server and giving your admin a heads up. Admins can access the new Server Boosts tab at the top of the channel list to unlock these new perks and manage their server's Boosts! Currently desktop only. Learn more in our blog!
