Wrong Account Reported / "Accidentally Reported You"

The way the scam works is a user will tell you they reported your account and show you a screenshot of an email from Discord. The email will list the username of an "employee" that you should contact. If you contacted the "employee", they will tell you to change your email address to one they will provide. When you change your email to it, they will have effectively stolen your account and will hold it for ransom. This scam has been running for a while and exists in other platforms as well.

If you encounter users like these and notice this pattern, just block, and report the user contacting you. Read the Reporting Abusive Behavior to Discord article for more info on how to report users.

The email is fake.

The email is just a template that they edit to change it to whatever is the username of the person they're trying to scam. It is fake and does not exist.

  • Discord does not mention what action they will take when you report a user.
  • If you were to receive a warning from Discord, they will either send it to your DMs via @discord which has the Discord Staff badge and an OFFICIAL tag next to its name or through your email, not through another user.
  • You can check your own account standing in User Settings > Privacy & Safety > Standing.

Below are examples of the fake emails. There multiple variants of this but the bottomline is the same and the highlighted in red parts are applicable to almost every scam email they show.

The "Discord staff" user is NOT an employee.

Employees will NEVER contact you in DM over Support, Trust & Safety or Billing issues.
All official matters will be handled through email or tickets at https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us
They will not ask you to change your email & password or remove your 2FA.
