#what lubricant should I use for my 3d printer and linear rails
1 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
For lubricating your 3D printer and linear rails, it is recommended to use a dry lubricant or a PTFE-based lubricant like PTFE spray, PTFE powder, or PTFE grease. These lubricants provide good lubrication while minimizing the accumulation of dust and debris commonly found in 3D printing environments. It's important to follow the manufacturer's recommendations for lubrication intervals and amounts to ensure optimal printer performance.
Lube for rails
While picking lube for linear rods or rails there are 2 main picks that work fine : grease or oil.
Greases are harder to apply, give higher movement resistance, but aren't as messy and don't require to be reapplied as often.
Oils provide lower movement resistance and can be applied even without taking the carriage/bearing off the rail/rod, although need to be reapplied fairly often and are more messy.
Grease selection: Lithium soap based grease, no particulates (so no PTFE, no molly etc), NLGI grade 0 to 2, optimally with EP additives.
Oil selection: Engine/automotive oil with SAE 30-40 viscosity should be fine. 10W30, 15W30, 10W40, as long as it's xxW30 or xxW40, it should be fine.
NOTE: Avoid using PTFE based lubricant. While many clueless youtubers recommend it with their referral links, it is meant for sliding contact, not rolling contact, it can wreck your bearings and rails.
