when you want to do the f3 commands in java you want to hold down function and then hold down f3 and once f3 is held remove the function key and press any other key you want to use for the commands.

Or add A etc to the function layer and don't let go of the fn key?

no all you need to do is hold the function button on your keyboard (should be near alt) and hold it then press 3
