whenever im in a game or in discord i try to use media control function keys by pressing fn and j k or l but it doesnt pause my music or anything like that

this depends on which apps has the media key focus. windows doesnt give all apps which register media key controls access to the events. basically if you have multiple things open that can be controlled with media keys itll work on only 1 of them or none.

but with previous keybaords ive had using the function keys has let me use media control when im in the game

our keyboard sends the exact same media control and it does work in games (i use it myself) but there is scenarios where Windows (the operating system) doesnt properly register an app/website that wants to listen to these media keys.

i closed all other apps apart from the 2 to see if there was anything else but still the same

Well i was having the issue yesterday and i still am today after restarting my computer and whatever elsew

ok so how about you plug in your old keyboard and check if that works
also double check your fn layer has the keys mapped correctly

my function keys are still on the default j k and l but i tried plugging in my old oneand it didnt seem to work but i had both the keyboards plugged in at the samew time, not too certain about the issue anymore but i guess its not too much of an inconvenience

yeah so its definitely windows messing up which app has mediakey focus
im not sure if there is any app or such to easy view whats stealing the focus for media key events

yeah im not sure i tried closing discord and other apps in the background but it didnt resolve the issue

like i said once spotify lost focus you need to restart it
