Using a switch with a smaller magnet would influence the magnetic field and so the sensoring. While it may would work the signal would be likely not as good anymore.

The spring needs to be none magnetic so the magnetic field isn't influenced by it. Because the pole of the switch contains a magnet that is wider and so the spring needs to be bigger too.
