Your average gaming pc can probably perform just as well for the price of that cpu alone.b

#

Grid sauce?

quaint hatch
#

I don’t wanna sound like one of those but I’m thinking about getting Mx browns

vagrant marsh
#

I got no idea how 1 switch differs from the next so knock urself out

#

But be warned. Always go green.

quaint hatch
#

True

#

But I don’t want the click

vagrant marsh
#

I like the click

#

The click confirms i clicked

quaint hatch
#

Ah

#

I’m thinking browns reds or silent reds

#

Options

#

I got a tester and still can’t decide

#

Idc I’m not good with keycaps

#

Ok

#

Thank you so much

#

Cya

#

One more thing actually

#

How do I get member role

#

But the keyboard?

#

Buy

#

Oh

#

Thank you

#

Bye

#

You too

#

Cya

vagrant marsh
#

the only problem i got right now with geforce now is that, obviously, it cant access the local saves of my pc. however, it also doesnt seem to have access to steam cloud saves. i just tried to play endless space 2, which has cloud saving, but not even an autosave was accessable.

#

so im wondering. if i save using the 1 hour trial, will that save be there when i start the game up the next time.

reef tundra
#

and when it doesnt work. big sad.

vagrant marsh
#

lol

#

you bought a pre built?

#

ahh

reef tundra
#

or pray to the console gods for the update solving the issue

#

red ring of oof

#

lol, xbox360 had the disk destroying feature when held correctly

reef patrol
#

Optical drives or in the case of the original Xbox, using a harddrive as DRM. Literal timebomb.

reef tundra
#

Jup, the original xbox was weird with the cd's with me. One disk could only work after some time running, so played some other game while waiting for the warmup period

#

Really odd that was. Never really knew what caused it.

ashen spindle
#

review nda seems to be 3pm cest btw on the 16th for the 3080

zenith sonnet
#

What's the date for 3090?

#

3070 was October iirc?

#

15th or something

fickle ore
#

Any of ya keyboard nerds know how would I keep Shift pressed in-game?

#

like even if I leave my kb

ashen spindle
#

AHK?

misty saffron
#

place something heavy on the key

ivory geyser
#

^

#

Even better, take off the keycap and place something on the key stem

ashen spindle
#

what

#

the review got delayed by 2 days is all

#

there will a shortage sure

#

but what else are you gonna do, not launch it?

zenith sonnet
#

Get the logistics right, then launch?
But then again, this is tech world, those cards lose value with every second

nova carbon
#

esp if amd has something compelling launching in oct, or even just something semi competitive

vagrant marsh
#

and who says that at launch they dont run into issues?

ashen spindle
#

yea it's an old tradition not done anymore because it make no sense anymore lol the cards get shipped to na/eu distribution centers from china so not like it makes any difference outside from one area not having shortage but the other just not having it at all

cursive summit
#

I don't think AMD's next gen stuff will be broken

#

There was a lot of time for them to mature the tech and drivers

#

If Nvidia's cards turn up broken, so will AMD's most likely

#

They had a similar window of R&D

#

Vega was a bit of a rushed product afaik

#

RDNA1 is not even pure RDNA more like a blend between it and GCN

#

I expect RDNA2 to be stable

#

It's not your traditional raytracing they will be doing

#

I heard they will support very partial RT

#

But just enough to not performance impact

#

It might even be better than Nvidia's

#

They do?

ashen spindle
#

It has RT support superior to Turing and maybe behind Ampere since rtx uses dedicated parts for it, where as amd does it inside the main CUs

#

sooo... where is the part that says games need to exist before?

#

the other parts of the ecosystem are not ready
that doesnt mean games need to be out first, that mostly means you need to have devs work on yourstuff and you work with them, not devs magically do it themselves

#

bc as you see nvidia only worked with like 5 games to make rtx enabled since 0 had it at launch

#

everything you posted so far makes it sound like Lisa had a good point and them not using dedicated die space sounds like the absolute best decision so far thonk

#

no because here you can put the chicken into the existing stuff like amd does it so the egg can be produced and when you need/have more eggs in the future you let the chicken have more space for itself

zenith sonnet
#

More like a processing power problem
We don't have the TFLOPs yet to do all: UHD, 144Hz, RTRT

ashen spindle
#

yeah RTGI and similar will be the best use of it by reducing dev work on stupid light placement work

#

no need to change everything from polygon based to RT based rendering, would need a rework of literally everything used everwhere

#

5000*

#

vermeer will be using the 5xxx series name

#

they realized having like 4 different cpu gens all in one naming makes it just confusing

#

not according to multiple people in the last days

vagrant marsh
#

magic

ashen spindle
#

well, it might be good to wait for availibility of AiB model cards

#

well, assuming they wont do a zen3+ refresh or smth yea

#

I wanted to get a 3080 untill I saw the TDP gloryKeK

vagrant marsh
#

im gonna wait for the first benchmarks to tell me which one is better. the 6700xt or the rtx 3080 and then i will buy that one.

ashen spindle
#

I'm not doubling the heat output of my pc when I just got an AC bc it gets too warm already

vagrant marsh
#

i got an AC because of my pc :P

#

when keeping a window open just aint enough no more

ashen spindle
#

well, I'll need my AC this week again I think, 34C lmao

#

god that sounds amazing

#

ver low tdp? lol what

#

that's still 50W over my 1080 lmao

#

uhhhh

#

I'm genuinely not quite sure how many % of that is troll gloryT

#

but its not even double lol

#

yeah in rtx games maybe

vagrant marsh
#

adding more tensor cores did increase rtx performance, but raw performance is only a slight improvement. the real improvement is dlss, which make it seem like the graphics card are a major upgrade

ashen spindle
#

userbenchmark

#

loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool

vagrant marsh
#

userbenchmark

#

lol

#

nemo, first rule of userbenchmark. its not accurate.

ashen spindle
#

the only accurate performance leaks we have is from the 3080 so far

vagrant marsh
#

quin, just say he is right. maybe he will come with reddit threads next

#

i cant handle that

#

sorry babe

#

but even userbenchmarks disagrees there

ashen spindle
#

im getting a new card, im not getting a 8k monitor where the 2x might be accurate

vagrant marsh
#

the increase in raw performance, in the fps inside games is hardly justifying getting the 2070 over the 1080

#

if you had the 1080, getting a 2070 was hardly a logical choice

#

which is used by only 80% of hte world

#

:)

#

i think you confuse rich western kids with billion sized china

#

still is

#

1080p is still used way more than 1440p.

#

no matter how much you want to deny it

ashen spindle
#

tvs also dont need 240hz and higher so ofc they go for resolution

vagrant marsh
#

no matter how much you want to deny it, 1080p is used more than 1440p is used more than 4k gaming

#

and they arnt gamers?

#

being discriminating just a tiny bit here?

#

you are just so ignorant...

ashen spindle
#
vagrant marsh
#

its obvious he is trolling

#

he probably is an anti vax who believes the earth is flat and that god exists.

reef patrol
#

As long as most users use... 1080P it is in no way irrelevant 😛

#

Should you test in 1440 and 4K as well? Of course.

ashen spindle
#

gpu benchmarks already use above 1080p... you jsut dont use it for CPU benchmarks obviously

reef patrol
#

They*

#

HU is not a single person.

#

Nope.

ashen spindle
#

the difference is, at some point you get cpu bottlenecked at that resolution, but you still need something to compare the 3090 and a 3050 with

thick elk
#

They split the reviews between tim and steve depending on what they are reviewing I think

ashen spindle
#

and you aint plaing 4k with a 3050

vagrant marsh
#

maybe with dlss you can

#

:P

thick elk
#

You still are not rending at 4k at that point

ashen spindle
#

so yes, there are already 2k/4k gpu benchmarks obviously

#

you still need 1080p for a) comparison with lower end b) the 60% of userbase using that resolution

misty saffron
#

fuck oled

#

at least in its current state

thick elk
#

5ghz is what my cpu runs at

#

It's just a minor overclock on intel, and really doesn't mean anything

ashen spindle
#

weird how it can still run everything I play at the hz of my monitor aside from like a single game

#

uwqhd @100 but sure

#

I'm not playing horizon zero dawn so it works quite well

#

almost like I make my purchases based on what I play and not based on the performance of whatever the most recent crysis is gloryT

#

doubt his island even knows what fiber is yet gloryKeK

crimson wigeon
#

but don't actually look close at the cars it looks real stupid

ashen spindle
#

ah yes, because in 10 years mainstream pc users make use of extremely specific math solutions gloryT

reef tundra
#

seems a little optimistic

#

They need liquid nitrogen to operate them

#

average consumer wont affort that

ashen spindle
#

given that experts still dont agree on the outcome it has on something "simple" like cryptography, I doubt it suddenly becomes affordable and better than conventional computing in that short time

reef tundra
#

It needs that extreme cold to operate

zenith sonnet
#

Eh, quantum computing may make it into mainstream PCs. As an accelerator. If we can produce them for under 1 000€. And maintain them at room temperature.
So, maybe in 50 years

reef tundra
#

also it doesnt break all of cryptography. Just partially

ashen spindle
#

oh god, do we have another case of someone believing the 7nm name has a meaning outside of marketing?

reef tundra
#

As it can calculate the prime numbers really quickly that have been used. (compared to conventional methods)

zenith sonnet
#

Eh, it's still not magic. And complicated. Don't expect too much

#

Quantum computing is like fusion energy.

#

Possible? Yes. Feasible in a large scale? Not any time soon

reef tundra
#

that is like saying in the 20s that the 30s will have flying cars

thick elk
#

Also quantum computing is fundamentally different from what we are mostly doing now.

reef tundra
#

and?

#

old tech is not bad

#

it does its job the best and is really cheap

#

Unnessecary costs

#

we already do

thick elk
#

flexible pcb's are a thing, the problem is the components you put on the pcb

reef tundra
#

The brain doesnt waste neurons

#

and being multiples the cost

ashen spindle
#

so just for references, you say we get below 1nm in less than 10 years, when intel themself say thy are looking at 2029 for 1.4nm and are currently on a 12 month delay on 7nm

#

like something doesnt quite add up

reef tundra
#

Quantum tunneling is being a problem already

#

eh...

ashen spindle
#

tsmc is not amd

thick elk
#

They have the architecture, just not the manufacturing node

reef tundra
#

They probably have, not relyable

ashen spindle
#

TSMC is not amd...

reef patrol
#

Gonna mute this channel now. This past hour is just... so bad 😛

ashen spindle
#

yeah dont blame you

#

ok let me quote you here "Intel is slow to the party" and yet you take the intel timeline as confirmation?

reef tundra
#

that is a wild guess not prediction

thick elk
#

seems that way, at least people are not calling people who donate to wikipedia stupid here. Gees just because the founder has a smaller company that uses wikipedia tech does not mean funding wikipedia is stupid.

ashen spindle
reef tundra
#

Many semiconductor engineers are not sure if the gate can be made smaller without entire redesigns or magic materials.

ashen spindle
#

again, AMD is not TSMC, names are useless, and sub 1nm isnt suddenly becoming quantum computing???

reef tundra
#

That scale is atom scale

ashen spindle
#

I mean that's not an opinion??

reef tundra
#

That is not quantum computing??

ashen spindle
#

ah yes, make the marketing even worse than using fake nanometer numbers

reef tundra
#

qubits

#

that is what makes a quantum computer the computing beast in some sectors

#

wot

#

It refers to the superstated bits

#

It does.. but really tiny. atoms can be counted

#

as a logic gate it wont

#

infinite?

#

howmany bits in a meter?

#

That is not too relevant for them

#

Completely differend?

#

Quantum computers use the superposition of electrons to function. Where the spin is both up and down at the same time. While unstable and immensely complex it does give some nice performance if working correctly

#

Neurons are not the best as they have to be learned how to function and living matter dies and needs a lot of maintenance to keep active.

#

it has binary 1 and 0 but also both states at the same time is permitted

#

it is important to not observe it as that would force it to collapse into one spin

#

Because it claims magic

#

matter teleporting, entanglement, superstates

#

hard to believe when classical physics is all that was known

#

With many very intellegent people and very heavy use of mathmatics

#

That is classical physics.?

#

it already is

#

the sub particles are inline of quantum physics which gets created at the big smash

#

Large particle accelerator?

#

That is called chemistry

#

mass spectrometers get very close

#

Atoms can self arrange so dont bother

#

and DNA does this job already

#

pretty much proteins blueprints for the robisomes to produce

#

null

#

it already does this and is widely known

#

It is called chemistry and you just have to give the correct conditions and it will do its thing

#

because you need to make it want to arrange

#

not really, just people with the novel ideas and the rest

#

also, it makes matter and antimatter when splitting from the supercharged photon

#

usually instantly annialating

#

Stability and entropy

#

It wants to be as stable as possible by either giving their outer electrons away or to take from others to be like on the the noble gasses.

#

organic matter is carbon, oxygen, nitrogen hydrogen

#

Self-replicating machines that slowly defected and mutated to make more complex protein structures

#

because that is silicon dioxide

#

and they have managed to create the rna from seemingly nothing by emulating those conditions

#

prettymuch the beginning of life. Then it needed to begin selfreplicating

#

which doesnt seem to have an answer

#

probably just immense luck

#

With 400 trillion planets in the milkyway alone it would not be that much of a step to have the immense odds beaten

#

it is.. inperfect mess of proteins and messenger rna

#

It makes a lot of mistakes when copying dna

#

many get corrected but not all

#

and virusses can hyjack everything

#

Even kill switches are needed to prevent it from killing itself. The immune system is constantly looking for defective cells

#

Once the basis of self-replication and some protein blueprints to create more of itself and slight mutations, the biggest steps are taken

#

They are just there to hyjack cells and use it for all its resources

#

yes, that is why it can be used to repair defective genes instead

#

or kill specific cells or bacteria

#

bacteria can already share genes

#

more of a gene gift

#

That is why anti-biotics resistance can be really bad news

#

Even in the time of charles darvin it was not novel idea that evolution is a thing. Just not how and why

#

he himself was a christian and on a mission for the curch

#

Because he was one of the first to decribe in more detail this and became popular

#

Basic idea of everything being related somehow was there just not how

#

evolution is still happening all around us and even in humans

#

humans them selves made evolution move towards what it liked

#

now we can splice how we want it to be and it works quite well

#

and it even uses the cells own processes to function

#

You could, or it would just fail and die

#

we changed dna for a long time with the selection

#

and plants?

#

fungi?

#

There are many plants and fungi that seem to possess some form of sentience

#

They can feel pain and react with a warning chemical for the rest

#

Why that specific distinqtion?

#

it feels pain and warns others of this. some ants even react to this and help the plant

#

weaver ants are known to react to the trees pain responses

#

You cant just assert it feeling no pain just because it doesnt have the specific hardware that is concidered to be pain. If some damage occoures and it responds to this in anyway it is a pain response. Just like pain being there to alert you for any damage happening

calm sparrow
#

I just got some sr850's i ordered yesterday and I don't regret a damn thing

reef tundra
#

That is a deflection by a logical fallacy. Non sequitur more specifc

#

not really. As it questions the fundamental idea of pain

#

Also plants do remember

#

The moving plants like the venus flytrap has some memory of past events

#

If it false triggered it becomes less sensitive with next encounters

#

because that is what it needs? Pain is send chemically if needed

#

immune system works similairly

#

They share a lot of overlap

#

DNA of a plant is not too dissimiair of an animal

#

has the same principal

#

that is just an ad hominum

#

also known as the I hope this works as counter argument is gone

#

False, that is not the argument

#

in what way?

#

Science would dictate that you cannot determine the better as evolution is about change not bettering

#

It just changes, could be bad or could be good

#

Also seems that some strawman is being build here

#

Just because it feels pain does not make it as valueable to a human

#

So if someone becomes depressed it loses sentience?

#

or feels no emotions?

#

What would a braindead person be?

#

So the emotional complexion nor pain nor will to life determines the hierarchy?

#

as they are still human but a plant or fungi would be more responsive to the surroundings

#

thus humans are special because reasons not logic

#

Evidence?

#

the papers testing that

#

As it is quite a acusatory and inflamatory point thus need sources to hold its validity

#

court hearings? numbers?

#

Also where is the human respect at?

#

He is allowed to kill the plants accoring to your logic aswell as human > plant remember?

ivory geyser
#

Plants do feel pain; they even communicate it to other plants around them via smells.

#

They also retract when subjected to pain.

reef tundra
#

so what? your human suporiority through some paper is greater than the plant right to life. so pour as much monsanto as you can

#

Citation on the bird seed point?

#

also many products that are natural cause cancer

ivory geyser
#

Example? 🤔

reef tundra
#

red beef is a known cardinogen

ivory geyser
#

Hmmm

reef tundra
#

heavy metals aswell

ivory geyser
#

Yea, but you dont eat heavy metals.

#

As for the beef, yea.

reef tundra
#

but it just means increased risk with the known research not conclusive proofed

ivory geyser
#

Wtf? Do you even know what that word means?

reef tundra
#

also ad hominom

ivory geyser
#

Simp is essentially a term for modern day white-knighting and going way overboard with it.

What does that have to do with discussion about carcinogens?

reef tundra
#

only tells me that you have no counter so just insulting is used

#

I know how search engines work

ivory geyser
#

@last cave you may agree with what you wish, but that is how it being used nowadays as it is primarily a word used regarding online streamers and their fans.

reef tundra
#

but how have you come to the data

#

as your source is not found

ivory geyser
#

If you wish to avoid discussion about meaning of words, then stick to the simple "simpleton" as that is obvious.

reef tundra
#

also language is not what you want it to be. it is the common agreed definationn

wheat plume
#

Wtf is the conversation

reef tundra
#

With what chemical

#

patent number?

wheat plume
#

,^^^

#

Its not

reef tundra
#

and? many companies had working with the nazies

#

from tanks to gas

ivory geyser
#

I do believe that holding a company responsible of something that happened 80 years ago is unreasonable as those people who were in charge back then are far gone from the company.

You might mention it as a reminder for future generations to not do such things, but holding that company accountable for it nowadays is silly.

reef tundra
#

What is evil?

#

not really

#

they became a pharameutical company

#

shady as most with price gauging but not cyclon b

#

also bayer is not technically the same as back then as it broke up

#

study?

#

how much is injested

#

and how carcingogentic is it?

#

No you have to proof it as you are claiming its harm

#

the acuser has to proof

#

ironically doing the same fallacy as you acuse me of doing

#

How much is the dangerous amount??

#

you can drink cyanide without dying. Known poison

#

just not too much

#

Which is annacdotal but more than the acuser has provided

#

Cody from codyslab has done this

#

proof?!

#

any?!

#

links?!

#

reports?

#

That is not how that works

#

The burden of proof is on the one claiming the statement

#

this is you

#

dont try to shift burden of proof now

#

i wont search for your proof

#

correct

#

nice

ivory geyser
#

@last cave plants have been shown to react to damage inflicted on them by emitting smell signals, retracting and closing off if they can.
While this might not be the same "pain" we tend to feel, there certainly is some physical response to damage on their end.

reef tundra
#

It is functionally identical to pain

#

does that matter?

#

by your own logic?

#

Also an acre is enough to life off

#

fully

#

citations?

ivory geyser
#

Cancer also works differently in plants than in humans. It is much less deadly for them than for us.

reef tundra
#

as the science is not agreeing with you

#

mainstream science

ivory geyser
#

If you sometimes saw those weird "growths" on trees, that is tree-cancer.

reef tundra
#

oh wow how impressive

ivory geyser
#

It can take hundreds of years before it even does anything to the plant.

reef tundra
#

yes, it curls up as it cant move

ivory geyser
#

Well, I have nothing to say about acres or land-farming so I will be out I suppose.

reef tundra
#

could proof usefull

#

does that matter?

#

and by galactic standards you are very smart stardust

#

kuch kuch, ad hominem

#

very intelectional way to counter

#

Now your proof of why iy is bad as experience is a source of proof which was yours to answer to begin with

#

And? if used correctly it saves more than it kills

#

Vinegar would also kill plants but is natural

#

still a poison and toxic

#

but he has not proved it being inherently more dangerous

#

But it was infertile due to the scare chemical?

#

Why? have never proved it was dangerous

#

seems to be a fine chemical if used correctly

#

well why not apply as police or something?

#

Also what is that sentance?

#

Then do it

#

get those acres and fill it with vinegar instead or something

#
#

That makes no sense

#

The rest are just people with land and coincidentally some food to last the entire winter and summer

#

Do you know how much it is and howmany plants it fits

#

Toxic

#

also answer the question

#

not his first time asking you that

#

inefficient

#

either fulltime farming or farming tools are needed

#

with machines

#

it is when weeds are making the lands barren

#

but human > animal according to your logic was it?

#

so plants are fine?

#

great

#

spray it

#

go arrest him officer

#

watch out for the dangerous mist it kills on contact

#

Have you any introspection?

#

you have been like that for a much longer period

#

and cant handle a jest?

#

What do you know about farming?

#

Cant even give any sources on the toxicity of his poison

#

Why not plow 5 hactares while you are there

#

No big deal

#

1 acre should be sufficient for full sustain a person maybe less

#

Source?

#

If land is used effectively small plot of land will provide for a lot of food

#

What does it matter what is a small holding. If an acre is enough than an acre it is

#

Nah i believe him

#

Why can he be both?

#

Why the hostility?

#

Cant reason your way ?

#

Why do you have colour video grrrrrr

#

And instead of reason and argument is resorts to emotional rambling

#

Source?

#

Anything?

#

Even John the crackhead?

#

No grammer matters

#

And a fraud would not win in emotional arguments

#

So you have contradicting proof to expose the lies?

#

Also what are the dimensions of an hectare again? You were the master farmer.

#

Also regulation on the farming sector is a strangle hold on the industry as you should be awere of

#

Big business would disagree

#

Is a great way to make the competition go bankrupt

#

Just make regulation do the work

#

Article?

#

Or just some random point without any backing?

#

Fine, just tells me the legitimacy of the claim

#

You were claiming that... Meaning that you should have some sources to the claim

#

It means that not enough poison has been sprayed

#

Where is that public knowledge stored

#

Ah yes the public domain my favorite location that exiats somewhere

#

No study or website?

#

Maybe some news article?

#

So any source would be valid to proof or disproof the point?

#

And I would be given the opportunity to cherry pick the source to invalidate the claim

#

Interesting tactics

#

What is your alternative?

#

.50 cal rifle?

#

That would still open you up to me maliciously selecting the source and atributing as yours.

#

Also fire needs dryish weeds

#

Do you even read, the issue with that?

#

Where. By whom. When

#

It allows me to understand how the opinion came to be

#

But you never provide any

#

Ah yes the adult method

#

From kindergarten

#

You can also spray it and it will die

#

Cant handle my facts and logic smirk

#

And the harmfull? What defines beneficial?

#

With finding your sources yes

#

Because you never told any details on how it works

#

Nor even try to give the backing to back the claim up.

#

Why and how much?

#

No i want his source as he has some interesting ones

#

They do

#

They give a written record of what they did and they findout. Little better than common Sense

#

Some advises are plain superstition

#

They look at research to get good info

#

Which can be tried by thenselves to test effects

#

Yes. Because their findings are also appicble to the small farmers

#

What feriliser works best

#

Which compounds keeps the weeds away

#

They want to know aswell and usually want it patented

#

Which needs the step by step instructions and research to comfince people to buy it instead.

#

But you dont want that

You dont have to copy all or nothing

It is

plush summit
#

how do i make seperate subvolumes on seperate disks with btrfs and then mount those subvolumes on different disks. im looking to have a disk with root, and a seperate disk or partition with my home folder

#

i want to be able to use btrfs snapshots

crimson wigeon
#

You mount them like any other partition, but you use the subvolid (or just subvol) mount option to specifyy which subvolume

plush summit
#

how do i create them on deperate disks or partitions

crimson wigeon
#

Make them with btrfs subvolume create

plush summit
#

but that will only make it on one disk, no?

crimson wigeon
#

You specify the path where you want the subvolume

#

It should do the right thing if you do something like btrfs subvol create /mnt/awesome/supersub (assuming /mnt/awesome is another btrfs filesystem)

plush summit
#

btrfs subvol create /dev/sda3/mnt/root

#

?

crimson wigeon
#

You'll have to mount it first somewhere

plush summit
#

oh

#

so you have to mount, create the subvol, then unmount and mount the other disk and make the other subvol there

#

i see

#

so to make a root subvol

#

btrfs subvol create /mnt/@

crimson wigeon
#

Sure you can do that

plush summit
#

whats best practice

crimson wigeon
#

I don't think it has to be @ tho

#

I've only abused subvolumes to have a sneaky Arch installation that shares /home and /lib/modules with my main openSUSE install ¯_(ツ)_/¯

reef tundra
#

just good practice to give each user their own partion

plush summit
#

i want ot be able to use btrfs snapshots for each disk or partition

reef tundra
#

keeps it easier to copy users

#

Why btrfs snapshots and not a lvm2 snapshot?

vagrant marsh
#

@cursive summit

#

U here?

plush summit
#

i would need to l;earn about lvm2

#

actualy i have used lvm

#

but i dont want to use it to extend volumes and such

#

i just want ot be able to make the directories on different drives with brtfs subvoumes so that i can use the snapshots to restore if something goes wrong

#

that is all

crimson wigeon
#

Subvolumes are just glorified directories yeah, so if you say wanted /home on another partition or whatever in a subvolume that's not the root subvolume you would have it in your fstab a bit like PARTUUID=2d77ebe7-c412-854a-85e5-d0733354c2e1 /home btrfs rw,noatime,space_cache,compress=lzo,subvol=subhome 0 0

#

And yes you can mount the same partition multiple times with different subvolumes

plush summit
#

so give me an example of mounting another disk with a subvolume

crimson wigeon
#

Here's a short sequence of commands I just did where I create a subvolume on a new btrfs fs, then mount that subvolume and create a file then mount the root subvolume again, probably not very good at explaining it but oh well I can't explain this stuff

plush summit
#

tree doesnt exist in archlinux install

crimson wigeon
#

Don't mind that

plush summit
#

so when you make a subvol under a directory

#

everything is automaticamy mounted there?

crimson wigeon
#

Sure yeah why not

plush summit
#

i want to understand XD

crimson wigeon
#

As I said, subvolumes are really just glorified folders which is what I showed with that tree..

plush summit
#

so unless i specify to mount to another subvolume, all data will be placed into the only created subvolume?

crimson wigeon
#

By default it'll mount the root subvolume, which includes all other subvolumes, so.. yes?

plush summit
#

im so confused

crimson wigeon
#

So am I

plush summit
#

oof

crimson wigeon
#

so I don't know, play around with the commands and see what happens ¯_(ツ)_/¯

#

If you don't want to potentially sacrifice a whole disk or partition just to play around with this then you can do what I did and make an empty file that you then run mkfs.btrfs on, like what I did truncate --size=1G btrtest mkfs.btrfs btrtest

plush summit
#

im just using a vm

reef tundra
#

The linux file structure is odd for those not familiar with it. As Drives are just folders in that structures and the order only matters when drive into drive.

Pretty much a mounted volume is a folder and more volumes can be added by asigning them to some folder that mount command tells it to

#

As windows would make seperate trees, linux merges them into one

vagrant marsh
#

This camera is built into the screen

#

Its a little hole in the top

I like that design

it works really well and allows for easy addition of partitions to your files tree

my phone has a dual camera on the back but its on the side

#

so when its flat on the ground it wobbles diagonally

vagrant marsh
#

I definately need to find a better cover that makes sure the phone is flat when laying down

My reserve phone, the xr premium was at 29% battery from 100 at the end of the work day. I listen to music all day. The poco F1 has a...4050mhz battery i think. It was always at around 40% at the end of the day. This X3 has a 5000mhz battery
