Saaaaame - ASMR, Meditation stuff and all that makes my brain react in the opposite way intended. 😄

ashen spindle
#

yes I do get shivers on my back, but in a sense that my next instinct is to punch someone

ashen spindle
#

someone on a stream as a joke bc people like it always puts his wine glass right next to the mic

#

I need to mute it when doing it

#

bc I genuinely get angry from that

#

oh idk why I wrote puts instead of fills

#

so you hear the gluck sound the wine makes when its leaving the bottle in fast flow

#

and you know what happens with the weirdos on the school ground

#

gimme your lunch money now

vagrant marsh

I was tagged

#

What did i do

ashen spindle

thonk well click on your notifications so you see where you got tagged in

vagrant marsh

How

I didnt knew about that

ashen spindle

on phone there is a @ symbol you click on, otherwise use the search function wit "has tagged" option etc.

vagrant marsh

I can actually check the notificationd

reef tundra
#

There is no change only adapt

plush summit
#

So I got a small problem

#

After every other reboot Wi-Fi stops working in Linux mint

#

But also after every other reboot Wi-Fi starts working in Linux Mint

#

I don't know what's causing this and I don't know how to make it consistent

#

Yes. If it's working when I restart it won't work. And if it's not working when I restart it will work

#

I don't know how to restart it manually

#

Restarting network manager did nothing

cursive summit
#

Can someone tell me what the hell is the USB3.0 base speed?

plush summit
#

using modprobe did not restart it

cursive summit
crimson wigeon
#

well if modprobe magic won't help you.. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

cursive summit
#

My USB3 USB put inside USB3 port in front I/O of my desktop is capped at 12.5 MB/s

pale sigil
#

Depends on the drive itself

#

Not the port

#

USB 3 drives can be slow

crimson wigeon
#

My other computer has a broken WiFi thing and unloading and reloading the module fixes it so... can't help ya there!

cursive summit

Kingston DataTraveler 100 G3

100MB/s read

pale sigil
#

Ya they ain’t super great

cursive summit
#

Capped at 12.5MB/s for some reason

#

I have never seen a speed on any USB I ever owned higher than 10 MB/s

pale sigil
#

Is it one big file

cursive summit
#

Yeah a 3.5GB zip

pale sigil
#

Probably why then

#

I have the same drive

cursive summit
#

Ah oki doki

#

I just expect more speed from USB3 lul

pale sigil
#

It’s a cheap usb stick

cursive summit
#

All I hear is "New USB 3 gen 2x2 is 20 gbps!"

#

And I'm like "What the fuck's the point"

pale sigil
#

Video etc

#

Is the point

cursive summit
#

I guess external HDD's like them

plush summit
#

Does anyone have any suggestions

crimson wigeon
#

Yeah if you want speed you gotta get them proper SSDs

plush summit
#

This is seriously confusing and I don't know what else to do online

#

I haven't found any other solutions

pale sigil
#

@cursive summit like I said it’s the drive themselves that’s limited

#

Their claims about usb 3 are correct

cursive summit
#

Eh guess the write speed is capped at some 100 mbps

#

Decent drive for the price

pale sigil
#

Ye it is

plush summit
#

How would I check that out

pale sigil
#

I mostly use mine for transferring PS4 games and making windows/Linux images

plush summit
#

How do I know if I have multiple services running

crimson wigeon
#

@plush summit so with the modprobe trick, are you removing all the related modules first

plush summit
#

No

crimson wigeon
#

Try doing that then, do something likelsmod |grep wifi and then remove all those modules and reinsert them

fickle ore
#

@cursive summit simple, you're writing at 11.5 mb/s

#

😉

crimson wigeon
#

Note you might not get lucky with the module names, in which case you're gonna have to find the one for your specific chip

#

Also the usual check dmesg to see if the driver itself has any clues (but it probably won't help... except to identify the module?)

plush summit
#

I see the loaded firmware

#

I have three entries under lsmod

#

What should I do with them

crimson wigeon
#

Do modprobe -r on them, then do the same without the -r

plush summit
#

it says the module is in use

#

I can't remove it

crimson wigeon
#

You need to remove them in the right order

plush summit
#

they all are in use

#

What service do I need to stop

#

Force does nothing

crimson wigeon
#

no idea, note that lsmod might show you dependencies for modules, might give some clues ¯_(ツ)_/¯

plush summit
#

I also have a problem with the display driver

#

It does the same thing where it doesn't work after reboot

#

But the next reboot it will work

pale sigil
#

Linux

#

yeah sounds like your system is proper fucked

pale sigil

crimson wigeon

Yeah that sounds like broken hardware or perhaps you got double unlucky with drivers, better get the latest and greatest kernel!

pale sigil

Windows kernel aPES_LulLaugh

plush summit
#

I am using the latest and greatest kernel

crimson wigeon
#

Perhaps even the current RC, or downgrade to previous.. working then? Time to start bisecting and have fun!

plush summit

I wanted to move away from Windows because Windows has actually fucked things up due to automatic updates

On average than RTX 2080 Ti is 24% slower than RTX 3080, RTX 2080 SUPER is 37% slower

#

so much for 2x the 2080 lul

timid chasm
#

I think we all knew that was going to be BS

#

2x is an absurd jump for a generation I feel

ashen spindle
#

ofc, but always more fun to make fun of marketing once real results are in :p

timid chasm
#

But fuck review embargos

ashen spindle
#

?

#

they are needed or you would get shit reviews only

timid chasm
#

Why would you only get shit reviews?

ashen spindle
#

because whoever happens to get the card first with the fastetst shipping can do whatever test get it out, and will grab the most views

#

so most people would see a rushed result

timid chasm
#

I meant more for people they send the card to and say "you can unbox it but nothing else", esp with the notable testers

#

That's annoying

#

I guess I only care about a few though

ashen spindle
#

sure but thats not a review embargo, thats just a useless early NDA lift on unbocing

timid chasm
#

I think GN is the only one I care about actually, haha

#

maybe uhh HUB

ashen spindle
#

and people like GN/HUB/anandtech etc. would make less money for doing in depth tests that come out later, so they wouldn't be able to keep up bc much lower $$$ income etc.

#

bc if you are 3 days late bc you test a lot, majority of the internet already watched someone else

timid chasm
#

In a world where being competent and thorough fucks you 😦

#

so ok fine I guess they serve a purpose lol

reef patrol
#

And that's why you use Patreon.

#

And sponsored content.

ashen spindle
#

and that's why embargos help

#

and the NDA on them lifts before the cards go on sale anyway

reef patrol
#

They "help"

ashen spindle
#

so its not like they delay it till after launch

fickle ore
#

Knew it. the 2x was for RT only

#

😄

reef patrol
#

nVidia fucks over a lot of "channels" with their "You can show off the card" NDA from yesterday. That's a lot of views.

They also fuck over a lot of serious sites by prioritising views over any kind of serious in depth stuff.

ashen spindle
#

oh yeah, I definitely dont like useless NDA stacks like unbox-FE-AiB

timid chasm
#

I hope AMD can kick ass with this next generation but I'm skeptical with their GPUs

ashen spindle
#

point is, in general the embargo does help at least a bit

timid chasm
#

Yeah, I guess you're right honestly

reef patrol
#

AMD has had two chances to make their "We're aiming for high end" speeches to be true...and failed.

#

Embargoes definitely help, yeah.

timid chasm
#

budget wise AMD is great so I can't fault them there but, yeah, high end meh

ashen spindle
#

I mean, based on the xbox talk from hotchips, it points to at least a 3080 competitor coming out

timid chasm
#

I guess I just want a solid 4k@60 card so it's NVIDIA again

#

No need to swap out my 1080 for 1080p on the PC

cursive summit
#

Well RDNA2 sounds impressive

#

But so did Vega cards

#

And those were eh

#

Story won't change most likely

#

Good budget cards that perform on par with more expensive Nvidia cards

#

But you will need to suffer through driver problems for the first year and a half lul

ashen spindle
#

well for Vega we knew the scaling issues would not be gone

#

hence 64 was only barely above a 56

cursive summit
#

I'd be very happy with getting a Vega 64 LC to my collection

#

I own a better card but I would like to have it

#

Then again I like all Radeon cards

zenith sonnet
#

Are people still looking for VII's for compute?

cursive summit
#

Vega II's?

fair gull
#

no VIIegas

cursive summit
#

I would say no tbh

#

It's a good card especially for productivity

#

Though good luck finding one at a reasonable price

#

You should be better off with an Instinct accelerator or Nvidia's thingies

#

Just found one for 670 euros on eBay, brand new

#

Well then again I checked how it compares to Insticts for the price

#

It's actually a great value offering

#

So for compute, it's really good, absolutely

fair gull
#

idk id say high end rtx or instinct for compute/ml

#

instinct cards seem to be better than nvidia a series cards

#

but both have a rather high price point since they are meant purely for compute

ashen spindle
#

yeah unless you work with cuda

#

gl with instinct then

fair gull
#

ya ok

ashen spindle
#

that might honestly be the saving grace of intel's gpu business

#

oneAPI

#

if it only halfway works its already more than amd has to offer atm

fair gull
#

i guess we'll see in le future

vagrant marsh
#

Im also skeptical if amd can deliver for the high end gamer.

halcyon moss
#

¯_(ツ)_/¯

#

5700xt is already pretty highend if you ask me

cursive summit
#

It is quite high end

#

For a very affordable price

#

And the amount of people who want afforable high end-ish cards compared to people who want premium true high end is bigger by several tenfolds

crimson wigeon
#

I think AMD is royally screwing up the compute front e.g. ROCm still doesn't support RDNA.. and ROCm itself is a bit of a mess

ashen spindle
#

tbf I barely follow what they do with CDNA so idk if that matters much

#

it will have to work for the supercomputers coming next year+

#

and that means server people will work on it too and not just amd only hence my confidence is boosted a lot lmao

cursive summit
#

CDNA isn't here yet

#

Arcturus will be the first card with that

#

And Arcturus is shrouded in mystery

fair gull
#

so we just ask shroud for info

ashen spindle
#

ye we only really know their roadmap, but idk how much rocm will matter for the non server space where rdna will be

crimson wigeon
#

It'll matter for people who want to game and do machine learning on the side

ashen spindle
#

But depending on how much rdna and cdna differ you might need separate cards

#

My point is, yes it would be nice, but I don’t know if there is public data showing how many instances it would benefit vs the cost of implementing it with rdna

cursive summit
#

CDNA is looking to be a more evolved product than RDNA

#

GCN was great for productivity, and I expect CDNA to smash any sort of productivity task

sharp tusk
#

just guessing but i think AMD would have delayed more if they were not confident that their product can compete

#

announcing right after nvidia reveal etc

ashen spindle
#

if the gpus would be not great they would've announced both at the same day so zen3 would cover up what gpu lacks

vagrant marsh

reef patrol

Drones on and on about superior EU warranty laws, and how a product replacement means a full renewal of warranty

vagrant marsh
#

Yes

#

Eu

fair gull
#

ya just move

#

we welcome you

vagrant marsh
#

But eu laws are hardly fallowed by each country

fair gull
#

they have to be

vagrant marsh
#

Mansen, u dutch?

reef patrol
#

Danish. Same difference.

fair gull
#

the eu releases guideline or eu wide laws

reef patrol
#

But eu laws are hardly fallowed by each country
@vagrant marsh Well yes. They are. That's how laws work.
COMPANIES might try to get around them, and that is why we have consumer rights organisations who literally sue the companies on your behalf if they try to strongman you.

fair gull
#

eu guidelines have to be made into laws of the countries

#

cant be part of the eu if u dont have the laws and guidelines implemented

vagrant marsh
#

Well, eu law says piracy is prohibited. In the netherlands, its condoned. It goes even so far, that our anti piracy organization has to take people to court, according to eu law, and then dont win cause dutch law says privacy is more important than eu law

reef patrol
#

It's not an optional thing. The EU laws are minimums. You can choose and do more and some countries do.

fair gull
#

@vagrant marsh i wanna see that

vagrant marsh
#

You can see that

fair gull
#

any legal docs or court rulings

vagrant marsh
#

They hired a polish company to record IP's of torrent leeches, dutch IP's got taken to court, asked the providers for the adresses with them, and they couldnt, cause court judgex privacy is more important. They couldnt show who in the household did the piracy

#

So the privacy of dutch people is more important than EU law

fair gull
reef patrol
#

IP addresses aren't legal evidence.

#

They tried the same here in Denmark.

fair gull
#

@vagrant marsh that doesnt make piracy legal lol

#

thats a comoletely different veast u just explained

vagrant marsh
#

I dont say legal

#

Its condoned by our government

reef patrol
#

Well no. It isn't.

vagrant marsh
#

They know it illegal but they dont do anything against it

reef patrol
#

Having IP addresses and a timestamp isn't enough to be used as evidence however.

ashen spindle
#

but in your case it wasn't condoned, it was no evidence so they couldn't punish people...

reef patrol
#

It's like saying murder is legal because they couldn't prove it in a court 😄

fair gull
#

if someone can prove puracy with evidence they will punish

vagrant marsh
#

Before eu law about piracy has been acted upon, meh. We had a tax on data holders. So usb sticks n such. It was dutch law that this compensated piracy of music and movies.

#

We condoned it

reef patrol
#

We still have that in Denmark.

vagrant marsh
#

Yes. We also still got the tax

reef patrol
#

(And it's bs)

#

But that's a different discussion altogether 😄

ashen spindle
#

but your entire point was that the EU law isn't being followed, which obviously wasn't the case there :p

fair gull
#

the tax on digital storage and copiers isnt for pirated content lol

#

we have that in germany

vagrant marsh
#

It might be followed by the anti piracy bureau, but they are hitting a wall that says privacy is more important

fair gull
#

people get taken to court and punished for pircay

#

we are part of the eu

vagrant marsh
#

We actively work against the law

ashen spindle
#

ok but that is not related to following eu law or not xD

#

dutch people didn't decide they want people to pirate stuff so that's why they increase right to privacy

fair gull
#

@vagrant marsh so ud be ok with them raiding ur house cause someone just says that u pirated smth

#

cause piracy is more important than privacy

reef patrol
#

It is in Denmark, Tony. Or at least that's how it's phrased. It's a way to "compensate" lost profit from the copying people would do on Casette and VHS without a way to punish them 😄

fair gull
#

well here its in general for copies of legal documents (that get a super light watermark printed on them aswell)

vagrant marsh
fair gull

vagrant marsh

No. Each modem within a house got its own IP

fair gull

ipv4 is exhausted usually multiple households share 1 public ip

#

@vagrant marsh thats not how isps work

#

maybe ipv6

#

but what popular services uses that

vagrant marsh
#

Then fuck me for not knowing any better

reef patrol
#

Is piracy a bad thing? Yes.
Should copyright lawyers get special treatment just because it's really hard to prove private citizens do it? No.

Focus on making streaming easier instead of spending resources punishing people for doing things illegally that you should have offered legally in the first place.

Go after the businesses who professionally pirate shit.

#

ipv4 is exhausted usually multiple households share 1 public ip
@fair gullAnd this is why they try and strongarm the judges into forcing ISPs to hand over the private info that CAN pinpoint a household.

u own hardware

with software u only buy a license to use it

#

not the software

#

u dont really buy games

#

u buy licenses to play the games

#

u still buy a license to play the game

#

a company could theoretically still make u legally not be allowed to play it

#

the only people actually owning smth are the ones who made it and in case of hardware if u buy it

#

@digital cliff basically like a restraining order

#

or how u can be made to not be legally allowed to have a pc or even use one

#

while not literally prevented u basically get punished if u still do

vagrant marsh
#

Yup

fair gull
#

id call it indirect prevention

#

cause u only get punished if caught

vagrant marsh
#

Like piracy

#

Well

#

Its with everything that way

#

Rape. Punishment when caught. Murder. Theft.

#

Hell. Throwing a piece of plastic on the ground is worth a high fine when caught doing it.

just put everyone into prison

  • Clocks at 2.2+ghz max, bus connection between compute units can't handle higher frequency
  • Perf/watt +60%, greater than expected of 50%
  • 6700 vs 3070

When the new radeons are better, will the driver support also be better?

drivers being shit are AMD's trademark at this point

zenith sonnet

Remains to be seen
Might as well be the other way round again

Because trust me when I say: Microsoft and Sony will report every tiny little thing they find in those chips of theirs

sharp tusk

#

its not matter of whether people are reporting stuff or not, just lack of resources

zenith sonnet

sharp tusk
#

atleast R9 390 didnt have any driver problems that were not fixable

#

the 5700XT blackscreen problems are just yikes

thick elk
#

AMD did hire quite a few people on their software side, My guess is that it will improve and mostly needs time to mature.
On the linux side stability on amd from what I heard is pretty good. As long as you don't expect a new card to work well at launch.

#

My experience with windows drivers was mostly from my old 7950 which I really never had any trouble with.

ashen spindle
#

it will help that rdna2 is in console, so ms/sony devs will get a chance to report stuff potentially, hence I give them a 60/40 instead of the usual 50/50 of drivers being a fail on release :p

vagrant marsh
#

Ofcourse. You dont want to fail sony or microsoft. But for them its not easy to switch to another chip manufacturer

ashen spindle
#

I mostly meant game devs from those studios, not ms/sony directly

vagrant marsh
#

Intel is trying to get into the graphics cards business, so they produce both. But so far, amd is the only one.

#

Ahh

#

Maybe chips are bad :p

thick elk
#

I don't know if it being in consoles will help that much. Issues related to how the drivers update, how they interact with windows, how they interact with multiple monitors. Those things are not relevant for consoles.

ashen spindle
#

sure but in the past we just had general issues of the entire gpu with vega, not related to windows or anything

#

and I ofc I dont think that removes every bug, just enough to give me 10% more confidence the launch will be good :p

thick elk
#

I expect the launch drivers to be a mess and most of it to clean up in a few months after launch, leaving some pesky / returning ones after that.

#

In general I'd say navi already improved quite a bit from vega

#

Heya, so my gf has been having problems with her relatively new roccat keyboard. Sometimes her shift keys dont work at all, and the only way to make them register again is to keep trying over and over again until they register. Her spacebar also sometimes registers two clicks and not one, and her S key also sometimes gives up the ghost same as the shift keys.

We have tried a bunch of things, different usb ports, firmware updates, reinstalling drivers, even a UEFI bios update. Nothing seems to help. No core files are corrupted either.

Is this a keyboard controller issue, or do any of you know what it could possibly be?

ivory geyser

That sounds like a bad contact issue - possibly a shitty soldering job or a faulty PCB/Switches.
