I have yet to see an implementation where motion blur made it look better

#

Worst case it legit makes my eyes hurt, best case it annoys me

sharp tusk
#

trackmania

crimson wigeon
#

Think the stock UE motion blur where even the slightest movement and you can't see anything clearly anymore

#

Whyyyy

ashen spindle
#

it obviouslt makes sense in cases like console racing game, you cant hit 30fps consistently, so you blur to make it look a bit smoother

#

but like, I want a clear picture on my pc, let my eyes do the blurring of movement

crimson wigeon
#

But I do tend to leave it on in games, so long as it's really subtle and nice and proper per object

ashen spindle
#

yes that has been the best one I've seen, in BL3 where you can chose camera motion blur and object motion blur

#

cam obv sucks, object was fine but didnt add any value to me

crimson wigeon
#

I have no need of such input methods so all I can repeat is the obvious thing that search the internet can give one: setting the env var QT_IM_MODULE to fcitx

#

but you did that so ¯_(ツ)_/¯

ashen spindle
#

hey thats a windows trick

#

stop copying windows

reef tundra
#

Uh oh no

#

Probably because it restarted the module

#

Enviomental variable might have been not reprocessed as it asumed that it would be notified when it may change

crimson wigeon
#

Nice thonk

reef tundra
#

The module itself

#

It read the variable at start and read the enviomental variable and used the default value instead

plush summit
#

im having a little trouble getting files to the arch install media. i tried to use wget but it doesnt exist there anymore.i put my file on github but when i tyr to download that one file it just gets the html of the page with curl

#

any suggestions?

reef tundra
#

But might not have realised that enviomental variables have been changed and are to be read which reboot forces it to do

#

You want a live iso?

crimson wigeon
#

Make sure you're curling the raw link

plush summit
#

i want to start from a live iso

#

this is what im using

plush summit
#

is that raw?

#

or am i wrong

crimson wigeon
#

As raw as it gets 😉

plush summit
#

it doesnt work

reef tundra
#

Dd can make life media from iso. Wget can be used, but git or curl might also be used to download from the web

plush summit
#

it just gets the html of the page

#

wget doesnt exist in the arch iso

#

it was removed in favour of curl

#

straight of rawdog me uwu

crimson wigeon
#

I can confirm that curl on that raw URI doesn't have any HTML nonsense

plush summit
#

not for me

reef tundra
#

You probably need to give it information that it an iso file should be on that domainname. And get that name and download the iso file alone

crimson wigeon
#

So what does it give you then?

reef tundra
#

Wget gives the raw data with little if any processing

plush summit
#

i didnt use the raw version

#

thanks it works

crimson wigeon
#

Thought so

reef tundra
#

Raw is byte by byte and you tell it you want all the data. Not using raw would strip the unneeded information

crimson wigeon
#

no plz

#

I want as few roles as possible thankyouverymuch

reef tundra
#

Haha more tags to bloat the tags list hahah

pale sigil
#

Lol

reef tundra
#

Mm if you hide the bloat away and pretend its gone it will make it seem less bloated mmmmm

#

Single player is also a server, underwater

#

When the server lag to the server is not 0 .

#

When they changed that i remember it was a mess and would make the block breaking lag insane even for single player worlds

#

It was . On general servers if the local server(http, etc ) latency is more than 0 it is doing bad things.

#

Usually it does not recognise itself and goes through the router to access itself

#

Great way to overrun your own internet interface

Even better yet.

ivory geyser

better question is why are you running Win

nosy little bugger, aren't ya?

mostly stuff related to coding on windows

also games still

you do you then

yeah but I mean you don't have to build something complicated. even a simple bash script is coding imo

That is not the pvp minecraft attitude brah. You fight and do some sicc tricks and eh lava yourself accidentally. Again

#

got an issue with 4 ram sticks running only on significantly lower clocks compared to 2 sticks (2800mhz vs 3466mhz), i just get random bsods, which i’d guess means some parts of memory get corrupted

#

is there anything i can do with that like bumping up the voltage a bit?

ashen spindle
#

is the memory on the QVL list of the board?

misty saffron
#

yep

ashen spindle
#

with 4 sticks and at 3466?

misty saffron
#

yes sir

#

it runs for a while, then after an hour or so i get bsods

ashen spindle
#

and you got one 4 stick package or did you buy 2 later or smth like that

misty saffron
#

i bought 2 later but picked it so the chips are identical

ashen spindle
#

mhh there's a tiny chance that's the issue so keep that in mind, but yes adjusting timings could also work

#

what cpu?

misty saffron
#

3950x

#

x570 chipset if that matters

ashen spindle
#

have you tried the dram calculator?

misty saffron
#

nope, let me check that out now

ashen spindle
#

go for safe at first ofc

misty saffron
#

oh well, just realised the manufacturers of the dies are micron and samsung of slots 1, 2 and 3,4 respectively

#

yet part numbers of the sticks are the same

#

is that even a normal practice?

#

specs are entirely the same though

#

would suck if that’s the issue, 16gb sticks aren’t the cheapest so to speak

ashen spindle
#

yeah that can happen, because you bought 2 kits of 2

#

they sell you ram with X properties, if they run out of micron stock but samsung works fine, no need to change the markeitng/package etc.

#

it doesn't mean they can't work together, just adds a lot of uncertainties

misty saffron
#

do you reckon the d in part number (khx3466c19d4) means it's a d-die?

ashen spindle
#

can be but its no guarantee

misty saffron
#

i'll try micron settings first cause the voltage is a bit lower than samsung, don't wanna burn them lol

ashen spindle
#

c19 is cl19 so d4 could just be 4 die ranks or smth

misty saffron
#

well doesn’t wanna boot with those settings

#

i think i’ll just try upping the voltage for now

#

1.350 is recommended so let’s see

#

guess i’ll just run membench and look for errors

#

another thing: can i do something with my gpu fans running at max speed before post?

#

is it because the motherboard just doesn’t start talking to the gpu right away?

#

it’s quite loud and annoying so

ashen spindle
#

uhh you could see if the gpu vendor has anything to control fans on their site

#

it's usually something like the gpu not getting data that the chip is cold enough so it starts the fans to cool it down

#

or the deafult is to run 100% and the vbios says to lower it based on temperature etc.

#

also just googling if its a common issue with your model maybe

sharp tusk
#

the RAM part number doesnt tell which die it is

#

only way to check is the version number in the kit and thaiphoon burner

misty saffron
#

oh well, the issue seems to be fixed now anyways

#

all i had to do was to set the voltage to 1.350

#

ran membench for 15 minutes, no errors so

shadow minnow
#

Does any of you know about some display technology that is transparent (at least from one side), visible just from one side, is not OLED or Projector, and also is not pixel based in normal sense?

ashen spindle
#

uhh tf is not-pixel based

#

like you have the LG oled clear tv thing and some pc cases use LCD sidepanels like that

#

but both are obviously pixel based?

vagrant marsh
#

He wants a holographic interface

#

But those dont exist yet on the consumer market

#

I hate we got a general understanding of the tech and use that tech in movies but damn, not having them in real life yet is so freaking annoying

ashen spindle
#

I guess I took display tech a bit too literal then. Could try a lava lamp that you can control if it can be anything gloryKeK

misty saffron
#

and some pc cases use LCD sidepanels like that
@ashen spindle please elaborate

ashen spindle
#

uhh there are pc cases with lcd sidepanels that you can also see through

shadow minnow
#

Let’s say that there are things (and reliable people) pointing to such a display being used in one device, that should come out 2022

ashen spindle
#

ok? sounds like a pointless feature for home usage

shadow minnow
#

It has specific usecase, and will not be actually useless

ashen spindle
#

for example?

fickle ore

@ashen spindle Using DOTS, btw

ashen spindle

makes sense

fickle ore
#

and Burst, what the hell that is even I dont..

ashen spindle
#

burst compiler, one that highly optimizes your code

fickle ore
#

kk ^^

ashen spindle
#

basically it almost makes it like you are writing c/c++ from a performance point

#

with the downside that it limits it to stuff that cant be changed to it, like classes

#

so you cant just add it to a current project

#

you need to write code VERY differently from how you would normally do it

fickle ore
#

Alright

#

well sounds promising

ashen spindle
#

I'm not looking forward to having to use it in the future if I'm honest lmao

ashen spindle
#

got im starting to hate this linux server

pale sigil
#

Why

ashen spindle
#

bc it's lagging/not running idk what its doing

#

we all dropped connection to TS, couldnt access my website

#

SSH connection super laggy etc.

pale sigil
#

How can a Linux server lag aPES_LulLaugh

#

Madness

ashen spindle
#

if it takes 30+seconds to show my input in putty I call it lag

#

cpu/ram/disk/network usage is low

#

traceroute to the server is normal

#

apg-get update complains about apt-transport-https not being installed

#

all googl results tell to me to install it via apt-get update

#

bc they are all braindead I guess

pale sigil
#

That sounds bizare

ashen spindle
#

it must be the connection I guess?

#

50% of pings time out, the others are normal

#

but tracert is fine????????

pale sigil
#

I refuse to believe this

ashen spindle
#

so I guess the server works but not the host?

#

then I still dont get what its trying to tell me with https not installed

#

ok how do I manually install apt-transport-https

#

god this is annoying

crimson wigeon
#

Manually download the .deb package and install it! Like apt install ./bla.deb

ashen spindle
#

how do I manually download it

crimson wigeon
ashen spindle
#

curl had no response and wget got stuck

crimson wigeon
#

Honestly I'm starting to think maybe there's something seriously wrong with that server, like perhaps its connection is broken somehow

ashen spindle
#

it must be the connection, the console from the hosts server control panel is working with no issues

#

those last 3 trace hops are on happysrv .de which seems to be the web hosting name for the provider or smth

#

I dont think the missing https package is causing my issues but I'd still like to not have it fixed

#

guess I should first write the server host?

crimson wigeon
#

Just nuke it and remake it from a backup! Windows style!

ashen spindle
#

but I dont own the host lmao its just a v server

#

if the network part infront of it is droping like 50% of the packets I cant change anything

#

I guess that might be why curl/wget got stuck

crimson wigeon
#

You can't just spin up a new virtual server?

ashen spindle
#

I mean maybe I could idk

#

I barely touch it

#

lol

#

I host TS, SVN and my website on it, I dont usually interact with the server

crimson wigeon
#

Also do all the logs say anything other time timed out and such?

ashen spindle
#

which logs

crimson wigeon
#

all of them especially those related to networking

ashen spindle
#

ts logs just show that people disconnected/dropped connection

#

uhhh I wouldnt even know what logs I could check for that aside from that lol

reef tundra
#

Ssh should not lag much as there is fuck all. Text doesnt need much

#

Why use putty when openssh is here

ashen spindle
#

well yesterday it lagged, today putty didnt even manage to establish the connection

#

bc I know how putty works somehow and I dont put enough time in for it to be worth to learn something else

crimson wigeon
#

If it's really low level dmesg might have clues but highly unlikely in a VM, else journalctl will give you a whole mess of logs (and I forgot what arg to make it scroll to the end instead of from the beginning)

ashen spindle
#

no journal files were found

crimson wigeon
#

thonk running as root?

ashen spindle
#

im just waiting for a reply from support tbh

#

ah no I wasnt bc I reopened the console

reef tundra
#

Monitor port 22 to see what the server is returning with.

#

Might be losing a lot of packages and retrying a lot.

ashen spindle
#

lots of SASL login fails from russian ips

crimson wigeon
#

Perhaps the ruskies are DDOSing thonk

ashen spindle
#

nah not that much

reef tundra
#

Eehhh seems to be an ddos or probe attempt

ashen spindle
#

oh I guess with the latest restart the jail isnt running anymore

crimson wigeon
#

Yeah any publicly accesible server on the internet that responds to anything gets probed constantly

pale sigil
#

Imagine not using cloudflare

#

I've had a server hit before

reef tundra
#

China is pretty much probing every ip at every port all the time.

ashen spindle
#

nah they have ddos protection in every plan that cant really be it

crimson wigeon
#

Orrr some other naughty person on the same server as you is eating all resources, somehow

reef tundra
#

Would not surprise US and Russia and the rest of the world does the same

ashen spindle
#

hrmm I guess someone else on the machine could be causing it

reef tundra
#

Oh yea, that is a real weakness

ashen spindle
#

I'd assume support would look into it though with my ticket

crimson wigeon
#

Yeah asking support to check is probably your best bet right now

ashen spindle
#

like the server is basically idle, I dont think they provision it that badly that they could eat so many resources, that I cant even use 2% of what I could use

#

netcup isn't a tiny provider

reef tundra
#

Ddos protection can be bypassed by local machines

ashen spindle
#

meh, doubt its anything dramatic like that

pale sigil
#

Have to say, the replacement router I got from my ISP the WiFi reaches outside

#

Couldn’t before...,

#

Also Quin will log in later to a corny 90s hacked screen 🤣

ashen spindle
#

look if they take over netcup server control, they are taking over much more important stuff than I could have lmao

misty saffron
#

thanks for the suggestion to use dram calculator thing @ashen spindle, pc seems to run stable with the voltage it suggested

ashen spindle
#

nice

#

fail2ban also runs again so f off putin

vagrant marsh
#

I think this data is incomplete tho

#

Isnt there a chinese and russian OS used for mobiles?

reef tundra
#

what is the data about?

vagrant marsh
#

That movie Bout mobile OS throughout history mrpleasent linked

reef tundra
#

The market share?

vagrant marsh
reef tundra
#

ehh, it is vague what the data is about. It could be the amount sold with that OS or the estimated devices active running the OS. Neither the scope wether locally to some market or to the worldwide numbers. Also company reports is all the listed source are. Which is vague and not acedemic acceptable source as a result. Since you cannot know which companies they include, whether these reports were accurate nor official nor understood correctly by the author(and not distored or misinterpreted, as usual by the communication noise commonly does). Also hard to believe that nothing else than IOS or Android exist in the world as it would imply. This is usually the case and seen as "others" in the representation. Then is the unknown of how or even if derivitives are lumped into the others. So, would lineageOS or similiar in nature be included and if so as android? At last it is useful to display the source of the raw data what the visualisation is based on. Other than looking nice and smooth, it doesnt work as source nor informational(due to unknown source, so random numbers would work as well). 3/10 - nice graph, but bad data

misty saffron
#

a 650w psu most likely won't be enough for 3950x + rtx 3090 right

ashen spindle
#

uhh should be fine

#

just make sure the individual rails going to the gpu can handle enough power

#

350w gpu + 140w cpu so you have 500 if you fully load both which is rarely the case

#

I guess if you run something that asks a lot of both (not games) and also have pcie4 ssds etc.

#

but normal usecase? good enough if its not bad quality psu

urban lynx
#

if i heard correctly the gpus even have some kind of power failsafe oder so

ashen spindle
#

asus has at least one variant where it uses leds to show if the powerdraw doesnt work

#

didnt really look at AiBs otherwise yet

urban lynx
#

i will wait till about mid october, and see the general consensus i

is, and what reviews and benchmarks reveal

ashen spindle
#

always a good idea, you dont want to deal with issues like 2080ti artifacts on first batch cards :p

urban lynx
#

latest point i'll buy one is early november.
#CP77

sharp tusk
#

if you are building new system definitely go with recommended, however if you own 650w power supply to begin with i dont see why you should upgrade it

thick elk
#

Then again if you are spending a combined 2200 on a cpu + gpu spending an extra 10% of that at most on a psu does not seem like a big issue.

#

Still if you don't go for major overclocks there is no way a good 650w should be overloaded from that.

ashen spindle
#

I have a 550w psu and I might go for an 80/amd version of it and I'll be fine ¯_(ツ)_/¯ no point in upgrading if what you have is fine

thick elk
#

The thing with amd's power is also partially that their reference coolers are completely useless.

#

Often at launch you can only get the reference cooler as well.

ashen spindle
#

hopefully not anymore the case

#

since we already saw big anvi shown with a cooler like on rtx 20 series

thick elk
#

They moved away from blowers but that does not magically make it a good cooler.

#

I do certianly hope it improves.

ashen spindle
#

it makes it a lot easier to have it be a good cooler lol

#

it helps they are not the ones with 350W cards

misty saffron
#

has money for 3950x and 3090, but cheaps out on psu
@prisma crag i just don’t wanna buy another one lol

i already have 5 and no idea what to do with them

turns out trying to connect a laptop to a 21:9 display just makes the screen shows 1920x1080 but stretched to be as wide as 21;9 and it looks horrible ;-;

ashen spindle

ashen spindle

uhhh, check nvidia control panel if that lets you set the correct resolution for the monitor

wheat plume

this my laptop

no nvidia

ashen spindle

or amd/intel equivalent

wheat plume
#

don tknow if there is that for linux

#

xrandr doesnt show native monitor resolution either

ashen spindle
#

well, google if there is one, dont see how there could not be one

#

could always be something else on linux but thats the only thing I know, the software managing your gpu

crimson wigeon
wheat plume
#

wat are all the numbers after the second command?

ashen spindle
#

.. you have to put something in startup so your monitors dont fuck up? wtf

crimson wigeon
#

Yes those who don't use a full fat DE tend to script up xrandr commands like that

wheat plume
#

idk what the numbers after the resolution do xrandr --newmode "1680x1050_60.00" 146.25 1680 1784 1960 2240 1050 1053 1059 1089 -hsync +vsync

crimson wigeon
#

That's all timing, don't change them and only use the values returned from cvt

wheat plume
#

i dont get numbers from that command

crimson wigeon
#

Yes you should give it your desired resolution and refresh.. (and -r for reduced blanking if you feel like it)

wheat plume
#

reduced blanking?

crimson wigeon
#

Reduces blanking between lines, only really matters for oldschool CRTs

wheat plume
crimson wigeon
#

So for LCDs you do want reduced blanking, for CRTs you're gonna kill them if you do reduced blanking

wheat plume
#

thats what I did to get that command

#

but the command after it, idk the numbers

#

what do the numbers mean mason xd

crimson wigeon
#

xrandr --newmode "2560x1080_60.00" 230.00 2560 .....

wheat plume
#

hm

ashen spindle
#

I mean you put them into xrandr, so just do man xrandr if you want to know what it is...

wheat plume
#

I asusme I cant put the . .. . . in the command zd

ashen spindle
#

ok serious question did you look at the link ngh posted, it literally is a step by step answer

crimson wigeon
#

Yeah you should paste in the numbers from cvt...

wheat plume
#

the ones I gave it in the command abovve?

#

yeah I know, but idk what the 9 numbers before +hsync are

#

oh

#

the modline output

ashen spindle
#

yes, you use the numbers you get from cvt

#

why else would you use the cvt command

crimson wigeon
#

It looks pwetty

wheat plume
#

oh, byt HDMI1 instead of VGA-0

#

ashen spindle
#

erm you are mixing the two commands into one

crimson wigeon

First you create the new mode with --newmode... then you attach it to an output with --addmode and --addmode only needs the output name and mode name..

I changed --addmode to --newmode and it said it doesnt like -hsync

o, I didnt need to tell it what display

OOOF it gave no issues this time

set panning to 0x0, this would be the scrolling effect over desktopsin one monitor

wheat plume

OOO it works

reef tundra
#

also, arandr is for quick general use but graphically

#

kde has built in lol

wheat plume
#

after that command, I can select that option in the settings

reef tundra

untill you reset I believe

wheat plume

yeh

#

I wont always have the monitor connected though

reef tundra

oh

#

right

reef tundra
#

Could make a script with acpi hook

ashen spindle
#

still feel like there's a good chance the gpu's control software would also be able to fix it ¯_(ツ)_/¯ with no need to write some startup script

#

well yeah

#

its just a gpu

reef tundra

or have it in the user binary for quick addition of the mode

crimson wigeon

Intel and AMD delegate "easy to use GUI for configuration" to the community, and I don't have much experience with those

reef patrol
#

AMD has for theirs. Don't know about Intel.

ashen spindle
#

I mean I'd prefer to have nvidia control panel/amd/intel equivalent regardless

crimson wigeon
#

Kinda prefer the hackery terminal way, feels more straight to the point than the overly flashy control panels one has to use on Windows

reef tundra
#

xrandr is pretty much the xorg way of display managment

ashen spindle
#

idk if I'd call it overly flashy lmao

reef tundra
#

yea lol, its a joke

crimson wigeon
#

Yeah sure Nvidia hasn't updated theirs in forever

#

But then you look at how glitzy the Intel and AMD control panels are..

ashen spindle
#

¯_(ツ)_/¯ my idea is that the vendor should know how their hardware works better than some random user, but then again, amd drivers...

reef tundra
#

Also nvidia following the Windows UI mentality? bold. You want ui you get one, or three or more like 5 mintermixed each one more useless than its older version

#

nvidia just rocking the 95 look

#

or xp?

#

seems both

crimson wigeon
#

Yeah those are XP icons there

reef tundra
#

Alleast it has all the settings

#

not the where the is the ahhhhhh no this is useless where is the old one oh god folder and viola correct usable ui

#

Really dislike the new audio manager

#

it does nothing except more or less which the widget did already

#

and hide the menu in advanced

#

for the xp or 7 menu as it works

ivory geyser

You will find Win XP-like settings.

also have this in the desktop it helps keep sanity

reef tundra

It is like the aesthetic doesnt bother many people but the lack of features

crimson wigeon
#

Ah, perfection, straight from Windows 3.x, wish they'd go back to this design style

reef tundra

Remember when UI was about having seamless and productive way to use the system too bad this menu has frosted glass effect and we like it

ivory geyser
#

Remember when UI was about having seamless and productive way to use the system too bad this menu has frosted glass effect and we like it
So never?

reef tundra
#

That were the reasons for guis to exist mostly, usability. Which is questionable for quite some software with design of the settings are in 3 sub menus that have like 2 sub menus idk one is double for the lols the other is crashing everything. And the Ui so complex it rivals airplanes in button density. pls let me have more than 4 by 4 pixels to select the button

wheat plume
#

wtf

crimson wigeon
#

Yeah that interface isn't great

reef tundra
#

Also they suddenly got really to the Square design. Ever since 8. Lol live tiles

#

There was a really nice looking ui redesign that seems to look good

#

also really annoying was the notifitions and volume control being soooooo slow

and reset this timer if the mouse was close

it feels so long when something is hidden by it and you just have to wait for the timer to finnaly runout

There are people packaging the libreoffice suite on the windows store and charging like $5 for it

#

its just random people, no one from the actual libre office team

ivory geyser

Who would buy that crap for 5$ lul

ashen spindle
#

ok so dont buy it?

wheat plume
#

it just bothers me....

#

that this happens

ashen spindle
#

I mean this happens all the time

#

more often on mobile bc lol windows store

#

but like, people put a flashlight app on app stores for 10$ that does nothing but activate the flash

wheat plume
#

yeh...

#

why do people need a flashlight app?

#

every phone ever has a way to use the flash in the quick toggles

ashen spindle
#

bc it says its brighter

#

or bc people dont know how to activate it

wheat plume
#

-.- yeh, break the laws of physics to make it brighter than it was designed to be

ashen spindle
#

that's not really what they are saying

wheat plume

i know xd

ashen spindle

just say its makes it max brightness and the phone app only does 80%

calm sparrow

How many people would be mad at me if I told my best buy story from like two days ago

So basically I needed to get thermal compound, and we go to best buy, after like 10 minutes we're like, "We're fucking blind, let's go ask an employee" and after another 5 of waiting, we head to the isle, and he gives me the most expensive one i've seen and instead of arguing with a best buy employee, I just go with it and spend 14.89 usd on 5 grams of thermal compund.

tender sparrow

It's often the only one they have in stock

But I've seen 4 grams of paste go for $13

could be useful to see if the interwebs has some available

There is no translation to rubbing alcohol in finnish i think

And yea figured they didnt have anything to clean the thermal compound off so went to the car accessories store nearby which had it

Isopropyl alcohol (IUPAC name propan-2-ol; commonly called isopropanol or 2-propanol)

there are a lot

Rubbing alcohol I believe is more general term for denatured alcohols for cleaning

Dear diary,

It has been 4 days since ive lost access to my pc. After the chromebook experiment deemed somewhat a success, but not satisfactory yet, i tried it with a wowfully outdated intel laptop. After several measures and attempts, as amusing as the thought was, it was a complete failure. Im having thoughts of conflict. Is a 2 year old chromebook better than my 10 year old laptop? Though the results are clear, im having trouble accepting them.

So in order to see what else the chromebook is capable of, i have unlocked the bios and has set everything to unlimited. It has no active cooling so i dont expect it...to...

Dear diary, second entry.

Im on my way to the store to buy my father a new chromebook

#

😆

#

Nah, just kidding. About the chromebook busted.

ashen spindle

I mean I would say wow it's unexpected the shop takes forever but I expected it so.. glorySip

I brought it in saturday. Sunday they are closed. Atleast the front store, the warehouse part still preps orders to be delivered, so they only started yesterday. The only sign of life i had yesterday from them was asking for my windows password.

#

Good thing i search porn incognito

#

Plus, it could be a complicated problem. At first i thought it was ryzen master causing the issues so i removed it. Problem persists. I replaced the soundcard, a little improvement was noticed. I replaced ram, a little improvement was noticed, but nothing fixed it entirely. So its either mb or cpu

#

Yes, i replaced the soundcard. Sold the old one for a good price though, and he didnt ask for a refund yet so i guess it was still working well enough

wheat plume
proud nacelle
#

I've gotten away with 100MB before. No harm in making it 300MB anyway.

wheat plume
#

only using 280KB

#

im glad this told me my laptop is EFI tho, i wasnt sure about that if I wanted to do an actual arch install

proud nacelle
#

You can go into your bios to find out

#

Just check for something called "Legacy boot" or "UEFI" / "EFI"

wheat plume
#

oooh

reef patrol
#

100-300MB is pretty typical iirc

wheat plume
#

ook, Arco chose this much

I think Manjaro had 500mb

proud nacelle
#

It's weird to me though

wheat plume
#

hm?

proud nacelle
#

The kernel and grub don't take that much space to begin with

wheat plume
#

yeah, they tiny

proud nacelle
#

You'd need like a bunch of kernels for it to add up.

wheat plume
#

yeah, true

reef tundra
#

just give it a gig

proud nacelle
#

You know what's even more confusing

#

Why give it a directory anyway?

#

Why not put it in the root dir?

reef tundra
#

because it makes it easier to interact with

proud nacelle
#

Shouldn't?

#

At the end of the day the bootloader reads the root partition's fs.

reef tundra
#

and the bootloader looks for /boot to continue

wheat plume
#

It has to be in /boot IIRC

proud nacelle
#

Actually now that I think of it

#

EFI requires it to be a VFAT 32.

#

And it doesn't have to be in boot at all either.

#

I guess I do

#

I shouldn't

reef tundra
#

symlink the entire system around

proud nacelle
#

But for it to be it's own seperate partition mounted to /boot, not required.

reef tundra
#

just makes filesystems easier

wheat plume
#

the grub.cfg file is packed with crap in this install cause there are many grub entries

crimson wigeon
#

/boot/efi is where the EFI System partition usually goes

proud nacelle

Yeah for EFI

#

I'm thinking legacy though

#

Also you can clean out grub.cfg

misty saffron
#

are there any gpu heat gun reflow guides

#

or do i literally just blast it with my heat gun at x temperature for y seconds

fair gull
#

i dont believe in reflowing in general

#

at least for any bga chip

#

its more like a bandaid

#

than a fix

#

but yes just place heatsinks on anything around the part u wanna reflow

#

blast it

#

till u can slightly nudge it with tweezers

#

and then let cool down

#

if u nudge it too much ull prob need bga soldering no matter what

misty saffron
#

it’s an old toshiba laptop the gpu of which i just want to revive, how much it’ll last is something i care about the least really

fair gull
#

could be anything from 1 boot to several years

#

basically like playing a slot machine

misty saffron
#

what temps do i wanna do, around 350?

fair gull
#

same temp ud use for soldering

#

obv depends on the solder aswell

misty saffron
#

should be 350-400 then

#

i’ll try it, ty

fair gull
#

hf

#

if not ull learn bga soldering

misty saffron
#

i just really don’t want to spend $50 on a new gpu card when trying to fix is free

fair gull
#

toshiba with replaceable gpu?

#

wot

#

damn

#

that must have been expensive on launch

misty saffron
#

give me a second, i’ll take a pic

reef tundra
#

probably low to medium air flow with 350 should be enough to melt the beads and have enough time to not popcorn it

fair gull
#

oh ya dont blast it to long

reef tundra
#

keep it moving

fair gull
#

thats why u very very very lightly try to just give it the slightest nudge with tweezers

reef tundra
#

circles whatever

fair gull
#

i usually do z style

#

over the area

reef tundra
#

too much and it shoots off

#

especially the caps and resistors

fair gull
#

imagine it sliding off like a pizza from a window

misty saffron
reef tundra
#

oh boi

#

thats a beefy groundplane

#

i would not do it

fair gull
#

damn

reef tundra
#

might take 400 to 500 instead

#

on high blast

fair gull
#

are we talking

#

F

#

or C

reef tundra
#

C

fair gull
#

na just the same

misty saffron
#

i really doubt it

reef tundra
#

Which almost always ends up to popcorning

fair gull
#

the important part is the probing

#

so u can just get the heat of quick

reef tundra
#

if it has enough airflow you could for lower temps

#

most cant deliver that lol

#

so temp has to be high not just heat it and keep it there

#

and reflowing only has a chance of working when some beads are looking iffy

fair gull
#

if the gpu is already cracked or the pcb is fucked reflowing wont help but if its nothing important i dont see why not to try

reef tundra
#

just for those situation where it might have disconnected some beads or are looking shorted and tin whiskets finnaly got to them or something like that

#

if something has failed it will be commonly somethwere in the power delivery

misty saffron
#

welp doesn’t budge at 350

#

let’s try 400

reef tundra
#

oof

fair gull
#

how short did u heat it lol

reef tundra
#

ohh yea most have slow heating ones

fair gull
#

idk man

#

like imagine air reflowing like soldering without touching any component with the iron

#

just by radiating heat

reef tundra
#

here have some hot air

fair gull
#

damn that air hot

#

where can i date it

misty saffron
#

how short did u heat it lol
@fair gull at least 3 minutes

fair gull
#

ah

#

cool cool

#

turn up the heat

reef tundra
#

that size might take a few minutes to have much effect

misty saffron
#

my station can do 480 so still got some leeway

pcb cracks due to the heat /s

misty saffron

#

kinda anxious i might’ve rocked it too hard but i think it’ll be fine

#

you can’t imagine how annoying it is not to have steady hands

#

pcb cracks due to the heat /s
@reef tundra it feels like a quality pcb so don’t think that’s an issue

fair gull
#

thats what all pcbs feel like

reef tundra
#

Thermal shock doesnt care

fair gull
#

i mean

#

have u ever tried ctting a pcb with a saw

reef tundra
#

often they are getting small hairline cracks to make your day filled

fair gull
#

ya

#

especially in multilayer pcbs

#

those suck

reef tundra
#

bypass or tossing

fair gull
#

bypassing requires tons of experience with the gpu at hand usually

#

to actually track down the issue

reef tundra
#

connect what once was connected and pray it was enough

fair gull
#

if its cracked in the sandwhiched layers ull not eaily find out

reef tundra
#

often with the modern boards and 12 to 16 layers no

misty saffron
#

aww, gpu still fucked

#

actually

#

maybe now

#

i can proudly say it’s half fucked now

reef tundra
#

pixelbuffer is no more

#

The clocking seems to be off

It even turned cyrillic, truelly fucked indeed.

misty saffron
misty saffron

reef tundra

little too much of the csgo ?

misty saffron

it only worked in lowest resolution 4 colors before but still

thick elk
#

did you connect it over vga

#

because a bad cable can also cause issues like that

misty saffron
#

i don’t have any vga cables...

#

i’m sure the connection is fine, it had no stripes in low res mode crap

thick elk
#

It being fine in lower ress makes me suspect the cable / connector / monitor

misty saffron
#

maybe i’ll find a cable in one of the garbage boxes, sec

reef tundra
#

some frequencies or resolutions are just a little bit off and are glitchy

#

but pll should compensate

#

If it is even there

misty saffron
#

never thought i’d say that but all i got is displayport and hdmi

reef tundra
#

The vga clock is yeeted then

misty saffron
#

nah i mean the cables

#

gonna steal a vga cable from work i guess

reef tundra
#

It not complex and way below theoretical limits

#

It could be that the pull-up or pull-down resistor got yeeted for the hsync and vsync

#

but would make it fail

misty saffron
#

might get another toshiba satellite and try the gpu card in that

reef tundra
#

Vga is not worth it

misty saffron
#

i kinda want that laptop, wasn’t the cheapest at the time lol

reef tundra
#

It is nightmare fuel sometimes

#

especially when having to animate

misty saffron
#

i don’t want to use any cables with a laptop really, defeats the purpose of it being a laptop

reef patrol

You mean the gap with no components between the controller PCB and the arms? Yes.

misty saffron

yeah that

reef patrol

Otherwise you wouldn't be able to install the arms in between the platters.

It has to go in VERY carefully from the side.

misty saffron

reef tundra

misty saffron

which can affect overclocking

#

yep

urban lynx
#

supposedly around 1300-1400 i think

fair gull
#

that fits with me then

old marlin
#

nahhh

fair gull
#

i really hope the 3090 doesnt go over 1.5

old marlin
#

1.7k

fair gull
#

well fuck

ashen spindle
#

like, the chipsets are manufactured by different companies, arent they? or the cards in general, or am i mistaken?
@urban lynx chip is from nvidia always, cooler will be different, pcb can be different, but it's a guess who makes the better coolers, so need to wait for reviews

fair gull
#

i only planned in 1.5k max for a new gpu

old marlin
#

cheapest 3090 on caseking

fair gull
#

ya fuck cheap

#

i want a decent one

#

that doesnt burn in 2 days

old marlin
#

yea

#

well

#

wait for a few weeks

#

better months

fair gull
#

ya

old marlin
#

see which one is good

#

like always

fair gull
#

well

#

ill just need more vram

urban lynx
#

ah fuck. my preferred site for comparing hardware hasnt the 3090 listed yet.

fair gull
#

and more tensor cores mainly

old marlin
#

let's hope evga performs better than it looks dogeKek

fair gull
#

dont care bout gaming

old marlin
#

well ti versions were leaked

#

with more vram

fair gull
#

theyll all be better than my current gpu

old marlin
#

like solid leaks

fair gull
#

ah

#

i shall see then

old marlin
ashen spindle
#

yes 16/20 gb versions of the 70/80 but not known to be ti/super models or just different names

fair gull
#

id guess a 3080ti would fall between the 3080 and 3090

old marlin
#

16gb memory on that

#

well

#

16 and 20 is a lot more than 10

urban lynx
#

... how long would we need to wait on ti versions?

old marlin
#

not known

fair gull
#

i mean rn i only got 11

ashen spindle
#

my guess is till AMD announces big navi

old marlin
#

probably shortly after AMD announcement

urban lynx
#

ah wtf. why so many stupid waiting things?

#

cant i get everything before cyberpunk supposedly release?

fair gull
#

i already thought about maybe a cheap used quadro rtx

ashen spindle
#

to have a option that sounds better than the competition

old marlin
#

there will be a big price drop with it anyways

fair gull
#

for the vram

old marlin
#

would wait for it

#

the wait for super was very much worth it for example

ashen spindle
#

yes most likely out before cyberpunk

urban lynx
#

i cant play cyberpunk on a bloody 750ti

fair gull
#

altho how much do 2080tis go for now

urban lynx
#

700

fair gull
#

i guess people wanna sell or so

#

hm

#

with nvlink i could get shared vram

old marlin
#

yea

fair gull
#

instead of mirrored

old marlin
#

you can probably snag one for "cheap"

urban lynx
#

when's "navi" announcement?

old marlin
#

but 30xx will get much better memory load times

#

as well as faster memory

fair gull
#

well 700 for 11gb vram to make 22 or 1.7k for 24gigs

old marlin
#

and more tensor cores

fair gull
#

thats the thing

old marlin
#

they can load directly from nvme

fair gull
#

idk how good the cards perform irl

old marlin
#

unlike previous gpus

#

yup

fair gull
#

guess ill have to wait

fair gull
#

wha

#

raid?

#

shadow legends?

reef tundra
#

This is what ya neeed

pale sigil
#

imagine paying 1.5k euro for a gpu aPES_LulLaugh

reef tundra
#

need some way to pay that money

fair gull
#

@pale sigil imagine waiting 10 days to train a small dnn

pale sigil
#

xD

reef tundra
#

and organs are worth something

#

just voluntairly romove 1 kidney 1 lung and organ to choise to make those stonks

fair gull
#

i am sure organ selling is illegal

dapper ridge
#

cant you donate organs and get a tax write off? because it is a gift?

#

just gotta find a source for those organs and bam tax write offs for life

ashen spindle
#

when's "navi" announcement?
@urban lynx at some point before console release

reef tundra
#

Why care for legality if they dont have the organs to do so

ashen spindle
#

so my bet is this month or early next

reef tundra
#

average rimworld playthrough

#

All to feed that gpu costs

#

Drug empire should also be profitable

#

I mean dont try to raid the fortified fortress that can throw multiple nukes where they would like to. Also you can donate those organs for goodwill with other factions

#

That game is really good at stripping me from any morals.

#

but what if it rendered at even more frames

urban lynx
#

i think rimworld first runs out of ram and cpu than of gpu ressources asteynSir

dapper ridge
#

1tb of ram then

reef tundra
#

what, cant hear over the over-usage of the gpu so I should buy the 3090

vagrant marsh
#

yea, but then you cant hear us because of the fan spin

zenith sonnet
#

Conspiracy theory:
Nvidia made the latency tool to cheat benchmarks and make AMD look worse, since AMD has been very slightly better in that regard

fickle ore
#

Default MSI > MSI off

#

unless you go Quaddro

reef tundra
#

Where the tin foil be at,

fickle ore
#

@ashen spindle yea fuck prices 3070 will be like 700€ kek

reef tundra
#

I need to reinforce the 5g waves

ashen spindle
#

? no? you can order FE models for MSRP

#

ofc the super nice coolers cost more, but AiBs cant charge more if the cooler is about the same

fickle ore
#

ye maybe in US with tax avoidance

ashen spindle
#

??? you can order FE in europe aswell from nvidia directly

fickle ore
#

24% tax + nordic country tax + euro = usd

#

;I

fickle ore
#

errytime fucked

ashen spindle
#

¯_(ツ)_/¯ not much I can do there lul

fickle ore
#

ye AMD it is

#

check dem prices

ashen spindle
#

I mean, amd will also get the tax

zenith sonnet
#

When is the last time you were able to get a 2080 Ti at MSRP in Germany?

vagrant marsh
#

you can get a 2080 ti for half price now 😛

fickle ore
#

yo guys know if the gtx 3060/70 can fit into Lancool II Mesh
