Unity really cannot into object caching and rendering. Gotta implement some harsh fog and cutoffs.

#

Too many trees - Engine not understand

ashen spindle
#

if they were to redo skylinies with the newly added DOTS features it would handle a lot more, and again, the stuff that is resource intensive in skylinies is not what a mmo would hit the most

reef patrol
#

Could you rip out enough core components from Unity and make it work? Sure. But is it Unity at that point then?

Most Unity games I know the developers, do nothing but rant about needing to essentially blow up Unity and rebuild it using third party solutions even for simple things.

thick elk
#

Most developers I know generally rant along the same lines

#

about pretty much anything

pale sigil
#

Same

ashen spindle
#

do you know if they use DOTS/ECS for pantheon? @fickle ore

pale sigil
#

Though a lot of ones I know have huge boners for Unreal in general

fickle ore
#

@ashen spindle When was that added?

ashen spindle
#

I didnt ask if they started with it, it was added fairly recently

fickle ore
#

Sry don't know, how could one spot it?

ashen spindle
#

only if the devs talk about it

fickle ore
#

not via watching how many cores/threads a processor uses?

ashen spindle
#

nope

fickle ore
#

I'll ask around..

ashen spindle
#

bc I could see them, being a big game that makes use of it and unity thus developing it with them in tandem for example

fickle ore
#

Could be. They have hinted Unity helping them in some aspects

ashen spindle
#

dont think any big games has yet made use of it, so it would also be very good pr for unity

fickle ore
#

All I want is the new framerate-independant input system added, so I can play with highest graphic setting and still get responsive keyboard input for combat

ashen spindle
#

didnt watch but I guess thats DR at 5k cl18 :p

#

oh wow nevermind, it's 16gb single rank sticks

thick elk
#

Well you did comment about 2x 16gb not being single rank. So there is that.

ashen spindle
#

didnt know they made SR that big now

thick elk
#

I was thinking it may exist but I was to lazy to look it up.

Makes sence though 8gb sr has existed for quite some time and tech does move forward on this front as well.

ashen spindle
#

I just didnt expect them to put it into existance with DDR4, thought that would be a ddr5 release thing

thick elk
#

DDR5 is still some time away for even major server adoption so It makes sense from that perspective

ashen spindle
#

some time? both intel and amd putting it out next year

thick elk
#

Oh yea, time moves fast

misty saffron
#

fuck steelseries

#

the amount of solder they put on the micro usb port in arctis 7 is just unacceptable

#

no wonder the port on mine started working only in a certain position

reef patrol
#

The real crime in that sentence is Micro-USB

misty saffron
#

look reliable to you?

#

fuck didn't add a blob on the other side

fickle ore
#

yo native 8khz polling on windows

vagrant marsh
#

maybe im gonna uninstall windows 2004 update

#

or atleast rollback defender. it identified a torrent as a trojan, which in my windows 7 experience wasnt a good experience

#

anyone remember that time when microsoft shortly declared war on illegal downloading? god, i hated that period

crimson wigeon
#

Better just disable it entirely

reef patrol
#

They never stopped.

#

If you as much as think about having KMS software on your PC, Defender acts like it's a nuclear device. It goes into full panic mode.

frozen anchor
#

@fickle ore is that moue actually even available now or is it already gone or not released yet

fickle ore
#

@frozen anchor fall shipping ;I>

frozen anchor
#

weird that theres so little info about this except that

thick elk
#

While the video was fine I still don't like the idea of look at old videocards in general being sponsored by Nvidia

urban lynx
#

so apparently there is a recommendation of a 850W psu for the up coming gpu'S?

pale sigil
#

god old gpus are so ugly

thick elk
#

Noone had a window in their case so why bother, it fit the rest of the pc nicely

pale sigil
#

true

lofty lintel
#

why pay 1400 for a 3090 when you can just build your own gpu

ashen spindle
#

so apparently there is a recommendation of a 850W psu for the up coming gpu'S?
@urban lynx the 12 pin from seasonic shows that text, but it's more likely to be related to using it with an 850W psu to guarantee stability or something, cable is only for seasonic psu's anyway

#

basically means nothing but with more and more amd fanboys crawling out of the woods, gotta make everything nvidia bad ofc

#

aka, we have no actualy news or leaks about it

reef patrol
#

The Seasonic cable definitely provides more power than a 3090 needs.

#

It's just a modular cable that happens to use the 12pin standard.

ashen spindle
#

"standard" lul

reef patrol
#

😄

#

Cable not designed for 3090 as much as the 3090 is designed for 12pin, and they mention the PSU wattage like they usually do for the entire system assumption.

pale sigil
#

just a few more days

fickle ore
#

@frozen anchor well it was released in a secret channel just 15 mins ago

#

;>)

frozen anchor
#

ohhhhh

#

makes sense then

thick elk
#

I wonder if nvidia is going to increase performance this generation and not just add things on top of their product stack like with the 2000 series.

zenith sonnet
#

@urban lynx 3090 will draw between 300W and 525W, probably high 300s is my guess (if single GPU)

ashen spindle
#

too bad its only mobile parts

thick elk
#

It does look at least somewhat promissing.

ashen spindle
#

sure, I just really dont care about laptops lmao

zenith sonnet
#

I have my doubts it can keep up with Renoir

thick elk
#

Mine is still on skylake 1.0 so yea, laptops are not my focus either.

zenith sonnet
#

Particularly with how flexible it is

urban lynx
#

@zenith sonnet 300 shoukd be managable to me 🤔
guess i'll wait till end of sep. though. at least

thick elk
#

From the leaks it does seem intel possibly gets to parity on the gpu and wins again in less threaded workloads. vs zen3

zenith sonnet
#

It could also be a dual GPU card. Haven't seen many in recent years, but it's a '90...

ashen spindle
#

thankfully for intel the laptop chips are a bit behind on amd's side, so they will compete with renoir in the laptop space even when zen3 is out

#

and tgl will beat renoir at least

#

it's just yield/scaling issues that prevents tgl to come to desktop

zenith sonnet
#

Does it scale from 8W to 65W?

#

Or is it only better in a limited bracket?

thick elk
#

Just because it scales to 65w doesn't mean it's optimal at 65w

zenith sonnet
#

True
Renoir at 40W is just a few % behind Zen2 at 80W

#

8C vs 8C

thick elk
#

regardless intel will still be fighting 8 cores wit ha quad core. Even if it wins single threaded a bit it is still a tough sell.

zenith sonnet
#

And probably 100% higher prices

ashen spindle
#

4 cores? I dont remember any recent leaks about core counts for tgl

thick elk
#

not even a leak or anything

ashen spindle
#

... thats ice lake

thick elk
#

derp wrong image

ashen spindle
#

lol

#

8 cores at 65W at a later date is what I'm able to find

#

ye from the hot chips talk it looks like tgl-h will have 8 cores but they might first only launch -u with up to 4?

crimson wigeon
#

4 cores is all one needs

thick elk
#

As far as I know intel didn't talk about more then 4 cores for the u series chips I assume they would hint about that at least.

ashen spindle
#

yeah the u series wont get more than 4, 8 will be -H

ashen spindle
#

but 8 cores at 15W also wouldn't make much sense

thick elk
#

for zen 3 it does because a single core works rather well at those power levels.

ashen spindle
#

zen2 you mean, and thats more of a byproduct of the chiplet design

thick elk
#

derp yea

pale sigil
#

Guesses on GPU prices to come?

reef patrol
#

More than RTX.

#

And it's going to make people upset.

ashen spindle
#

no guess exist and wont till release

pale sigil
#

@ashen spindle such a buzz kill you are :p

pale sigil
#

Guess you can.

#

Harmless it is

#

Quinntosh depressing he is

ashen spindle
#

I mean there is speculating and leaking and then there is random guessing

reef tundra
#

3 dollars take it or leave it

fickle ore
#

I'm with you. gtx 3060 or bust

#

or amd equivalent

#

rdna 2

thick elk
#

Generally prices are finalized as late as possible.
Of course there will be a ballpark figure but it's mostly based on what the competition is doing / demand.

ashen spindle
#

god I wish I could get big navi with nvidia drivers

fickle ore
#

if 3060 is higher than 400$ fuck it im gona go amd

ashen spindle
#

is that 400 before or after tax

fickle ore
#

with tax im eu bro

ashen spindle
#

how tf am I supposed to know if you use $

thick elk
#

As a linux user I would not mind ampere with amd drivers, wanna trade.

fickle ore
#

.$€£

ashen spindle
#

haha sure

#

you get the cuda I get the stable drivers

thick elk
#

I don't care about cuda and amd linux drivers being mainlined are pretty stable as far as I know.

#

Anyway I think people hold too much value in the name Nvidia gives the card.

ashen spindle
#

yeah it works on linux bx there it's not amd itself making the drivers gloryKeK

thick elk
#

they do develop a large part of it but they don't have to deal with cleaning up their mess with driver updates.

#

generally the update mechanism is assumed to be a large cause of issues.

fair gull
#

theres other cards than the X080ti cards?

#

damn

ashen spindle
#

Yes, Titans

fair gull
#

lel

thick elk
#

Anyway I still think it's kind of stupid to just look at 1070 = 2070 when in reality the 2070 was a replacement for the 1080 in terms of price.
To me the best way to look at things would be the current € 500 nvidia card vs the new € 500 nvidia card and so forth.
It's not like people will suddenly spend a lot more on a gpu. 300-400 is still on the higher side for the average buyer. Or I at least hope they won't suddenly spend a lot more just because the name changed.

fair gull
#

dual 3080tis here i come

reef tundra
#

Quadro if you dont like having money

ashen spindle
#

for a consumer choice you should look at the price, from a pure tech point you should look at what die type it is (104,106 etc.)

#

what do you mean higher pricing, that was all 4d chess obviously /s

#

god I hope I wont see bullshit like that again

thick elk
#

but even the die can be missleading, if they decide a more costly die is worth it because there is demand outside of enterprise even these can move down.
I must admit that there is value in looking at the most expensive thing as well but when comparing further down the stack price for price is a better measure.

reef tundra
#

4D? I am playing 5D chess

ashen spindle
#

sure but usually only adds a suffix to the die nomenclature or similar, doesnt usually move the stack, so for comparing it from a tech point its usually still the best choice

#

tech point = youre not looking at it to decide to buy it but actually just for tech is what I mean

#

also my gpu seems to start having issue so I guess perfect time to upgrade lmao

#

sometimes after gaming for a while I get a total freeze, doesnt happen if I open afterburner and set my OC profile

#

I undervolted it and upped the fan curve so I assume either of that "fixes" it

thick elk
#

My last upgrade was because my 7950 died after a 5 year overclock at the max voltage afterburner would allow

ashen spindle
#

heh thats a good lifetime for that much voltage

thick elk
#

28nm could handle quite a bit, I did have very minor degredation over time lowering the clocks a little bit.

ashen spindle
#

also I wonder if you can easily view who booked wafers at TSMC, I wonder if next year we get ampere super cards that are on tsmc and not samsung so the supers would be actually a nice upgrade potentally, at least in efficency

#

or if we get hopper next year already with amd putting on pressure

thick elk
#

I think nvidia is banking on having a sweet deal with samsung quite a bit but we shall see.

ashen spindle
#

sure, and I assume if by then SS has a better option they might take that, but if not and we dont get hopper, I could see them going away from SS at least for a bit, to bridge the gap till hopper and have a better look vs amd

#

I just hope we see decent prices and an update to gforce experience that it no longer needs a login lmao

#

oh, also till we then get the first reviews I am also eager to go though the leak twitter and make fun of the youtubers that just posted bullshit gloryKeK

#

wonder when we will get to know what that part is

pale sigil
#

RE: Prices

#

I really dont want a 3060 😦

#

if it wasn't for the fact i upgraded to 1440p i would have kept my 1070ti a year or two more

#

so this time around i wanna go full on so i dont have to worry for much

ashen spindle
#

but once again, that makes no sense to say xD we dont know the specs for the names, what if a 3060 also gets a lot of vram and is ideal for 1440p etc. the 60 might not be much worse than a 70 or whatever

pale sigil
#

i dont have much faith

ashen spindle
#

imo you should wait for big navi anyway and not get a gpu next month

pale sigil
#

oh dont worry

#

i aint getting a gpu next month

ashen spindle
#

good

pale sigil
#

ill get one when i can get my entire build prob Jan

#

Wot

#

why

#

🤷‍♂️ i dont play consoles so to me it seems bizare to want one

#

i considered getting one to sell at a large price

#

I have a PS4

#

but i bought it when god of war came out 😄

#

why

#

if it aint broke dont fix it

#

i love the controller

#

tbh

#

so much

sinful dirge
#

Size wise and coating wise the Xbox controller is still great but yeah feature wise not so much

#

Tho couldn't care less for rumble I turn that off instantly but having buttons that don't drift after a while would be nice

weak lynx
#

Does anyone know if switch films fit into the wooting flaretechs? Im thinking about getting a wooting one and modding the hell outa it, just trying to see if theres any problems with the switch and switch films. (like if the prism gets in the way or other stuff like that)

ivory geyser
#

I didnt manage to get films in them.

frozen anchor
#

doubt you need films

ivory geyser
#

But I had some second-hand 3D printed ones - genuine films might fit better.

#

But frankly, they are quite tight as they are.

#

I agree with Kuuube here.

weak lynx
#

oh, ok ok. Thanks!

#

Im also gonna put an SA keycap set on it, so I hope the low profile doesnt make people want to kill me

#

xD

ivory geyser
#

Hey man, it is your keeb! :D

frozen anchor
#

did you just say SA and low profile in the same sentence? that is illegal

weak lynx
#

I know... and I cant wait to break the law @frozen anchor

but not gonna lie, gmk's look pretttty nice on the wooting on ngl

Routines to turn my fan on +/off every 15-30 min

zenith sonnet
#

I'm curious to see what CTR can do for my 3700X

zenith sonnet
#

Haven't looked into how it works, but my guess is that it's just some advanced automatic undervolting that tries to find the lowest voltage without triggering clock stretching

#

And any reported performance gains are simply due to the fact that Zen 2 boosts higher and higher the cooler it gets

#

And maybe freeing up power when it hits a power wall

misty pier
#

what's CTR?

wheat plume
#

I wish all IDEs had this features, it tells you everywhere a method is called from

ashen spindle
#

hey you're finally starting to make use of visual studio features, nice

wheat plume
#

yeah, I had to use this to cleanup code that was created by accidently double clicking labels and boxes and whatnot in the designer xd

#

Would this be considered hard coding?

#

im using this to fill up a combobox in another class

ashen spindle
#

uhh sorta yea

wheat plume
#

-.- FML

#

ill need to make a fucking database table for these now

ashen spindle
#

wut

wheat plume
#

I have a database table with all the counties in Ireland so that I can use that to fill in the combo boxes in the update and add member forms so you can select what county you are from

#

Ill need to do the same for the statuses too :/

#

and now ill need to add all this to the document :/ add a new diagram for the new table and include it in the DFD diagrams and relational schema

#

UGH -.- this project is stupid

ivory geyser
#

Ngl, adding such things to DB sounds like an overkill to me

wheat plume
#

yeh

#

it is -.-

#

cause they will NEVER CHANGE

#

but she doesnt want hard coding

#

so this is the only solution to that

#

I even have a database table for counties

ivory geyser
#

What is a country changes its name? lul

wheat plume
#

IKR!!

#

we must think of all scenarios

halcyon moss
#

pycharm has that feature too, ctrl + b

#

countries change more often than you think

#

but.. lets not start about timezones

ivory geyser
#

Like for real, my country changed its official international name like... a year ago.

wheat plume

O.o

ivory geyser
#

From Czech Republic to Czechia

wheat plume

ooohh

I know it is not usual.

But it happens

#

ya know

halcyon moss
#

Things created by humans, change

ivory geyser
#

Except for war, war never changes... pepesweat

halcyon moss
#

yes it does :p

wheat plume
#

I hate oracle DB, your username and password to ligin to the DB are in plain text

#

at least trying to connect using C# it is

halcyon moss
#

most of the time with databases right?

crimson wigeon
#

I think that's the standard way of doing things, how else would you connect?

wheat plume
#

idk

#

someway that doesnt let ANYONE SEE YOUR LOGIN DETAILS

halcyon moss
#

how is this the case?

crimson wigeon
#

(you would definitely put the address and login details in a separate config file and not have it in your code though)

wheat plume
#

this is the DBConnect class we made

halcyon moss
#

yeah config file, fetched from env.. that kinda stuff

wheat plume
#

its called eachtime we need to run a query

halcyon moss
#

but thats usually more deployment stuff, for local dev this is fine for now :p

ashen spindle
#

I mean, you somehow need to login obviously, and for a uni project it really doesnt matter that the pw is in the file and not a seperate .dll or something

crimson wigeon
#

Wouldn't it be more efficient to keep a single connection open and reuse that instead of making a new connection for every query

halcyon moss
#

make a singleton!

wheat plume
#

O, I should have put all that into a method to call and pass the SQL query to

#

THat would have been smarter

#

instead of copying these lines each time

#

the only change is the SQL query

halcyon moss
#

that function can keep some state, only reconnect when needed

wheat plume
#

it closes connection after the query is run

halcyon moss
#

yeah but why

wheat plume
#

so to not have 1000000 connections open at once when not needed anymore

#

LOL the lecturer gave out to me about Ram usage using .Hide() instead of .Close() when exiting a Form.....

her laptop ran out of ram

#

does she have 1GB ram???

#

I only have 4 forms in my project

#

and only one can be opened at a time

halcyon moss
#

tbf, connection pooling is an optimization.

wheat plume

anyone willing to do a small photoshop edit

I need to add a table to this diagram and its an image

ashen spindle

why do you need PS for that

wheat plume
#

or anything that can edit images

#

I just installed GIMP to try it myself

ashen spindle
#

.... paint?

wheat plume
#

im too stupid

frozen anchor
#

you could literally use powerpoint and screenshot and crop the graphs

ashen spindle
#

open picture in paint, paste image of the thing onto ti, save picture

wheat plume
#

I got the table copied in gimp, I need to edit the text in it and create an arrow to the other table

ashen spindle
#

idk never used gimp

#

sounds like something you can just do in paint

wheat plume
#

how I make arrow in gimp

halcyon moss
#

gimp is not the best tool for that...

wheat plume
#

then what is?

frozen anchor
#

you need to download a script or download a vector arrow or something

wheat plume
#

it looks janky tho

ashen spindle
wheat plume
ashen spindle
#

you uninstalled paint? lol

wheat plume
#

I didnt remove anything except onedrive and teams

#

and the candy crush it preinstalls

ashen spindle
#

im pretty sure paint is still a default thing on every windows version

wheat plume
#

O.o

#

hmmm

#

idk why I dont have it then

foggy solstice
#

There's no tool to draw arrows in GIMP, but you can just draw an arrow.

#

What kind of arrow you looking for?

frozen anchor
#

cut a square in half for the head of the arrow and use a rectangle for the tail maybe

wheat plume
#

a curved line with a solid triangle at the end

frozen anchor
#

you might be able to do it better with inkscape

#

not sure though

foggy solstice
#

Use the ink tool for the line, the triangle you'll just have to draw with the pencil or brush.

#

You can make it solid with the bucket tool.

wheat plume
#

im using paint 3d :')

ashen spindle
#

I mean I guess that is good enough to draw lines

wheat plume
#

no

#

the lines look like crayon :/

foggy solstice
#

Inkscape is probably better, alright. You can draw arrows with it.

ashen spindle
#

idk just get default paint back again

foggy solstice
#

By the way, what happens when you do Win+R, type in mspaint and press enter?

halcyon moss
ashen spindle
#

paint net is overkill for making an arrow and entering text

#

might as well stay with gimp then imo

foggy solstice
#

So is GIMP.

wheat plume
#

paint 3d is out

#

the 2d shapes all look like they were made with crayon

ashen spindle
#

just google how to install paint since it seems to be gone

wheat plume
foggy solstice
#

By the way, what happens when you do Win+R, type in mspaint and press enter?

wheat plume
ashen spindle
#

you probably used one of these "remove bloat" scripts when you installed windows and that also removed paint I bet

frozen anchor
#

i wonder if all the mspaint downloads on google are actually the real thing or just viruses 🤔

misty saffron
#

coincidentally it's the same people who blame windows for "not working properly"

foggy solstice
#

You probably deleted it from the system32 folder somehow.

wheat plume
#

ive not used a debloat script on this install

#

maybe removing paint3d got rid of paint?

ashen spindle
#

should be seperate

foggy solstice
#

Don't think so.

misty saffron
#

no

frozen anchor
foggy solstice
#

Check system32 and sysWOW64.

wheat plume
#

sysWOW64? :') wtf is that file name

foggy solstice
#

They're folders.

#

sysWOW64 is like System32, but for 64 bit systems.

misty saffron
#

no not really

foggy solstice
#

I haven't checked, but that's what I reckon.

misty saffron
#

syswow64 contains 32-bit libraries and executables

reef patrol
#

Friend wants me to take a dead Macintosh Classic and put a Raspberry Pi inside. Sounds fun 😄

misty saffron
#

wow64 stands for windows on windows 64 pretty much

foggy solstice
#

Makes sense. It's related to the 64-bit thing.

misty saffron
#

system32 still has 32 for compatibility

frozen anchor
#

for me paint only had files in sys32

#

so i would just look there

wheat plume
#

I got a semi curve in inkscape

#

itll do

#

now must try to make a tiny ass solid triangle

foggy solstice
wheat plume
#

aha I found that link also xd

halcyon moss
#

this chat has been incredible :p

frozen anchor
#

oh thats actually really easy i suggested inkscape but really had no clue how to draw an arrow in it lol

halcyon moss
#

next option is to print, scribble with pen, scan

#

inkscape: draw a line, pick the arrow ends

for really big images when i export as png they are smaller not sure why

i was getting a 8mb png that end up being like 50mb jpg

ok if i put quality really low its lower but the one gets distorted a ton

lemme do 100 quality and see

if you zoom in you can see all of the induvidual VCs

#

im actually really surprised that i managed to compress that down to 8mb though

thick elk
#

About the export settings for jpg, this is about what I use most the time:

#

minus safe exif

frozen anchor
#

yeah thats what i usually use but for some reason that makes the 12480x12480 image i put above ridiculously big

thick elk
#

well with just cv in there you generally want to not use jpg

frozen anchor
#

hmm

#

yeah im not really sure how the compression stuff works

#

but i think its weird that making that image a jpg makes it 25x larger

thick elk
#

jpg is a garbage format anyway, way to old but still used because alternatives never took off.

#

it makes it larger than png but not than the raw image

#

png's compression algorythm is just more efficient for simpler things.

frozen anchor
#

ah

thick elk
#

Still amazing that an image format from that's almost as old as I am is still actively used.

reef patrol
#

Because of the compression.

And because "everything runs it".

I do think webp is going to make it at some point.
Older format suffered from why include a formats that's never used / why use a format that's never compatible.
However nowadays with dynamic loading webp gets at least enough reason to be used, eventually all relevant devices will support it and a switch can be made.

#

ehh not really, gotta be able to ask for extra money with quadros

#

why not make gamers pay quadro prices and double quadro prices

thick elk
#

Would be interesting to have some comparisons of the average price of gpu's sold at one of the big retailers over time.

#

I think ultimately pricing right now comes down to three things:
1: The average consumer does not simply look at price vs performance in a uniform fashion, so when a card is a bit of a worse deal on average it's market share will not drop to 0
2: neither amd nor nvidia are agressively persuing more marketshare by lowering their margins
3: consumers are willing to pay these higher prices in large enough numbers.

ashen spindle
#

geizhals has prices over time for individual parts, pretty sure there are site that easilt collect that

thick elk
#

What I would want to see is the average price gpu's in general are sold at over time.
So to compare you would have to look at sales volume as well.

#

As high end models have gone up in price did the actual buyers move with the gpu branding or with equivelent prices.

#

I could do something with the steam hardware survay but that is rather international and also includes a lot of sales from other regions and also laptop parts.

ashen spindle

thick elk
#

Indeed, it was actually not bad at all.

ashen spindle
#

after all, put an amazing heat sink on a lower power card and you can run it even quieter and such etc. it doesn't mean it has to now always get power hungrier

#

as for the weird angled 12 pin, idk, I'd have to see it on an actual card, the size looked weird on the drawing, could still be an annoying placement or maybe it makes it easier to plug in? I dont build enough pcs to make a guess there

thick elk
#

Looking at the placement I think it's mostly put that way to optimize for boardspace. With that fan on the back the pcb has to be shorter.
I don't think it will be too awkward, fairly similar to just having the connectors on top, maybe a bit better but not too bad imo.

@prisma crag .pck, .bnk and .wwise/.wav. extracting them requires quickbms and some quickbms scripts, bnkextr, wav2ogg, revorb and a hex editor. Quickbms extracts the files from .pck, bnkextr extracts the .bnk files, quickbms again with a different script to convert .wwise files to their correct name, ww2ogg to convert .wwise to .ogg, revorb to fix files and then finally using a hex editor on the extracted .bnk files to match them with the .ogg files. no

the program does that for you

reef patrol

Aside from setting a few things in BIOS beforehand, it is more or less hands off. And those things are explained.

vagrant marsh

well, you need to adjust bios to allow the program to do its own overclocking, but those are the only stuff you need to adjust

Keep in mind this still isn't released.

just that with their result on the 3970x I think it was? I dont see you getting anything that is not normal deviation for a 1ccx chip

#

yes

vagrant marsh
#

5 minutes in bios. and then 2 minutes installing this program and ryzen master, and hten you press a button, let the program run its course, and behold, overclocking done for you.

reef patrol

Look at it this way - it does the boring work of testing all of your cores for you. That's a lot of time saved.

Didn't want to OC? This does it for you and safely.

reef patrol

As much as it can within the specifications given.

ashen spindle
#

all I said is that nobody will know what to put here if they wouldn't understand OC'ing anyway, so it's mostly a tool to make it slightly faster, it's not a gpu3.0 where you literally let the tool do the thing was my entire point xD

vagrant marsh
#

they dont have to

#

the tool does that for you

#

you literally only have to press that button that allows the overclock. the tool does the overclocking for you.

vagrant marsh
#

you say people are confused by hte numbers

#

anthony explains the tool does the numbers for you

#

you can tweak the numbers if you want to, but the tool does all the overclocking for you

#

it detects when your cpu becomes unstable, which cores become unstable, and overclocks it safely

reef patrol
#

I feel like 99% of the conversation could have been solved by Quin watching the video.

vagrant marsh
#

yes!

ashen spindle
#

which I did on release two days ago...

reef patrol
#

The tool picks settings for you based on known tests. That means if the Devs don't have a chip in hand, it can't do that. But they can help you guess if you contact them.

#

It literally IS that.

ashen spindle
#

I'm saying the tool gives a 1.3% on a 3970x, which has 32 cores so that's 4 CCX right? and the tool operates on ccx level, meaning you should expect less on a lower chip

reef patrol
#

It gave that on THAT specific die.

#

As explained in the video, they've seen results of upwards to 10% - And that was with (as I understand) safer settings, not "enthusiast overclocking"

#

Again - Automatic tool gives you anywhere from 0 to 10% free boost.

ashen spindle
#

10% on a 3990x? I dont recall where they said that was seen on

reef patrol
#

ON A CPU

ashen spindle
#

yes on what cpu

reef patrol
#

Mister "I watched the video on release" 😛

ashen spindle

so on what cpu did they achieve it on?

ashen spindle
#

very nice answer

reef patrol

It's in the fucking video you lazy tard 😄

#

Literally black on white.

ashen spindle
#

.. then give me a timestamp? the result they got in R20 was the 1.3% I talked about

vagrant marsh
#

on a 3970x, which the creator of the tool himself didnt test the program on yet

ashen spindle
#

..yes, I'm waiting for what cpu the 10% was achieved on because that can change or support the argument I want to make

vagrant marsh
#

ask him?

reef patrol
#

To hand the answer on a golden plate (you lazy bastard), they show results of a 3900X and a 3960X in the video.

Because the percentages are what Linus said Usmus said they had achieved.

#

At no point did Linus claim theirs did that...

ashen spindle

The software isn't released. There literally is only the developer who has it! Reeee xD

ashen spindle

except they got it so they could've very well tested it on more than the 3970x???

Note to self: Quintosh never watches anything they claim to. Just watch the entire thing and hand them everything on a platter. Because fuck if they want to do any - ANY - research 😄

reef patrol

You've literally done nothing but confirm that.

vagrant marsh

just kidding quin

ashen spindle
#

yes the entire time I skipped over the first parts because I was looking for them showing their own data on it, because that''s how I interpreted what you said

reef patrol
#

So you didn't watch it. Thank you.

ashen spindle
#

I did on release, I did not fully rewatch it now, because I misunderstood what you meant, so why would I watch the intro again, if I thought you were referencing to something at the end

#

what I wanted to get at, is that just based on what they've seen, a 1.3% increase on a chip with twice as many CCX as the AM4 chips offer, you would not get really much out of it, if you just click the auto tune compared to ryzen master or whatever the amd tools for it are. It's nice to have something that offers intel XTU features and auto tests it, but it's not like you would get equal gains to gpu 3.0 implementations without knowing OC stuff

#

now if the 8% on the AM4 chip is not the exception then it might be better than what it looks like right now even without knowing more things about OC

#

but sure, feel free to say me misunderstanding what you meant, means I am to lazy to watch a video

is it just bash being stupid?

proud nacelle
#

No. It's just the documentation for said thing is wrong

plush summit
#

wll thats shit

thick elk
#

maybe version differences because my sample works for me as it should

plush summit
#

sucks if anyone wanted to use the documentation

proud nacelle
#

Can you try using the busybox shell instead?

plush summit
#

this script wil be run with zero install

proud nacelle
#

See if that would work.

reef tundra
#

just use the * wildcard

proud nacelle
#

Doesn't the wildcard just give everything though?

plush summit
#

yeah

reef tundra
#

Yes but there should be one for one character

plush summit
#

wildcard allows for all input after it

#

no

#

youre thinking of a ?

thick elk
#

?* should be similar

proud nacelle
#

This might help.

reef tundra
#

? (question mark) this can represent any single character. If you specified something at the command line like "hd?" GNU/Linux would look for hda, hdb, hdc and every other letter/number between a-z, 0-9.

proud nacelle
#

? is a single character. Any

reef tundra
proud nacelle
#
  • is anything, including the characters afterwards.
#

Wait

plush summit
#

i just want a single character

proud nacelle
#

No wonder your script isn't working

plush summit
#

from a-z

proud nacelle
#

You're getting a random before [a-z]

#

Remove the ?

reef tundra
#

You can define /dev/sd*2 go get every /dev/sd that has been numbered 2

#

Giving 2 wildcards means it has to match the wildcards with something

plush summit
#

that works, mage

#

thanks

reef tundra
#

?* means atleast two characters

plush summit
#

why does that work

proud nacelle
#

Because

#

You are trying to take a random char

#

And then trying to use [a-z]

#

So assume you have /dev/sdX

#

? gets the X

thick elk
#

oh yea, I usually just default to regex, or * infinite expansions

proud nacelle
#

but [a-z] finds nothing.

reef tundra
#

A wildcard has to be met with something

proud nacelle
#

Since there is no [a-z] after X.

plush summit
#

logic would have me specify that i want a character and then the range

#

i guess thats different here

proud nacelle
#

However

#

If you had for example

#

/dev/sdXX

#

It would work

#

But we are talking a fuckton of drives to get over /dev/sdXX

reef tundra
#

or the admin just defined that as such

proud nacelle
#

Why would he

reef tundra
#

and partions are a thing

proud nacelle
#

Udev generally manages that

#

Yes but partitions are numbers not /dev/sdX

#

Partitions are /dev/sdaXXX

reef tundra
#

normally

#

you can be an evil sysadmin and ignore convention

proud nacelle
#

Well that's a you problem then

plush summit
#

this is a dirty script just supposed to be used for my own small systems

#

nothing more

#

if others want to tweak it and make it better they can

proud nacelle
#

Also LordBloat, they kinda have to follow convention AFAIK

#

Unless you symlink

#

Since AFAIK the kernel enumerates files as /dev/sdX internally.

#

So unless you change the kernel, goodluck not having /dev/sdX.

reef tundra
#

The last image that was send requested for two characters after /dev/sd. First wildcard is anything the second has been limited to a-z. Thus /dev/sdaz would match but /dev/sda1 will not as the second wildcard is not met which does not accept nothing

plush summit
#

to pass characters into other programs like gdisk i need to echo them?

proud nacelle
#

echo "things to be done" | gdisk

reef tundra
#

fdisk

proud nacelle
#

Unless you are running a program that already outputs to stdout

#

fdisk != gdisk

#

one is mbr other is gpt

plush summit
#

mbr is obsolete

proud nacelle
#

not for ssds tbh

plush summit
#

cfdisk is what i used to set my system up

#

but this is command line only

#

cfdisk is a ui

proud nacelle
#

ssds haven't reached >2tb yet with reasonable cost

plush summit
#

still

reef tundra
#

or 'sudo dd if=/dev/null of=/dev/sd* && su nobody'

plush summit
#

guid is better than having an mbr and partition limit

proud nacelle
#

Well tbh

#

Unless you're making custom partitions for /var, /usr, etc, you're likely not gonna hit that limit

#

But you do you

reef tundra
#

mbr is from last century

#

be modern and use gpt

plush summit
#

i just make a custon partition for boot home swap and root

#

boot swap and root will be on the same drive

#

thats my setup anyway

reef tundra
#

I have three partitions for my system root, boot, home

proud nacelle
#

that's 4 partitions, so it would fit afaik

#

also swap can be file based

reef tundra
#

do make sure the swapfile has no holes tho

proud nacelle
#

true that

reef tundra
#

dd is a way to do that

#

But that is also a way to Destroy your Disk

proud nacelle
#

afaik there's other ways

#

but yeah, dd is generally the way you do it

reef tundra
#

Be resourcefull use minimal programs to get stuff done

proud nacelle
#

there's also fallocate

#

And yes, less is more

reef tundra
#

You can also use dd to burn iso's

proud nacelle
#

dd live iso's

reef tundra
#

yup

#

But it is a blunt instument and hopes the user is somewhat competent to make sure it is safe to do so

#

It will write null to the root if told so

proud nacelle
#

tbf

#

it's not hard to RTFM

pale sigil

Mage

proud nacelle

#

Mage

reef tundra
#

It is always good to first use man on the command to learn what you are doing

proud nacelle
#

ehhhhh

#

yesn't

#

the smaller the program the more possible it is to read man

#

the bigger, the more impossible.

reef tundra
#

-h or --help should be working with most normal programs

proud nacelle
#

-h generally does it

reef tundra
#

-- is a gnu thing

proud nacelle
#

tbf

#

i use -- since - options are a mess

#

not to mention capitals vs lowercase options

#

some have very drastic differences

reef tundra
#

-- is good for semantics and clarity

#

Less likely to misread the command

thick elk
#

So what are you actually trying to do exactly?
It remends me of some crappy thing I wrote a year or so ago.

A script on a bootable usb to automatically add an extra partition to fill the rest of the drive.

proud nacelle
#

He is trying to make a script to automate installations

#

I think

reef tundra
#

bootstrapping?

proud nacelle
#

¯_(ツ)_/¯

#

ask him not me

reef tundra
#

You are to speak for him! anger face

#

you are the chosen one

reef tundra
#

You must throw this ring in the vulcano lol

crimson wigeon
#

Modern fdisk does GPT though

proud nacelle
#

True

reef tundra
#

fdisk does gpt no prob

proud nacelle
#

But depending on how old the program is...

#

Rather take no chances tbh

#

Never know

thick elk
#

when using fdisk in a script you should use sfdisk

reef tundra
#

I like rolling dices where can i enter?

proud nacelle
#

a live production environment.

reef tundra
#

Need to feed that gambling addiction somehow

#

I love pushing to master without a branch merge it just saves more time

reef tundra
#

I dont like those odds change it to % 1 or im out

thick elk
#

Reminds me of a large mess I made cd / and then rm -R *
Luckily I could recover from what I lost before I noticed

reef tundra
#

Also use shred way more epic ness

proud nacelle
#

I also accidentally used rm -rf on my hdd directory once...

#

thank god for recovery utilities thou

thick elk
#

I basically wanted to wipe an external hard drive I mounted on /mnt but forgot to cd there and ran it on / instead

reef tundra
#

Luckly you had setup the privelages correctly and did no damage 🙂

crimson wigeon
#

Imagine not using root for everything

thick elk
#

well kind of had to wipe data of that drive

#

so yea

proud nacelle
#

imagine not being in single user mode/using a single user kernel

reef tundra
#

Imagine a world where you dont sudo su on .bashrc
