According to their earnings reports they segment the income in 3 parts:
Revenue in Productivity and Business Processes was $11.7 billion and increased 15% (up 16% in constant currency),
Revenue in Intelligent Cloud was $12.3 billion and increased 27% (up 29% in constant currency),
Revenue in More Personal Computing was $11.0 billion and increased 3% (up 4% in constant currency)
From: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/Investor/earnings/FY-2020-Q3/press-release-webcast
Mostly cloud and bussinesses is their reported inflow and going to be their future. Also the data selling seems to be hidden or obscured.

fair gull
#

or not as lucrative as you all think it is

#

even as a private person you can buy perosnal info shit for super cheap

#

and get tons of data for a few dollars

reef tundra
#

Personal data can be very expensive

fair gull
#

depends on the person

ashen spindle
#

azure is getting bigger and better mostly bcs AWS is good and all but doesn't get updated, the prices dont get adjusted for better ahrdware etc. so makes it hard for not super big companies to stay there if azure is around

fair gull
#

u and me are pmuch worthless in personal data

#

azure is also easily integrated with VS projects etc

#

so even more reasons for bigger development companies to also use it

ashen spindle
#

ye they have an ecosystem to offer with office, teams, exchange, VS etc.

#

amazon has aws

fair gull
#

im almost sure most companies dont make anywhere close to enough money to stay operating with just selling personal data

reef tundra
#

Advertisers pay a fuck ton more to be able to get targetted adds

#

That is where the money is made

#

the information is only interresting if it allowes identity theft or it is a paypal/bank/credit account on the dark web

#

advertisers just want to target the groups most likely to buy

ashen spindle
#

yea but there are no ads in teams/azure/VS

fair gull
#

which is information thats not sold by 1 party

#

i am almost sure that data for targeted ads is rather cheap

#

due to how easily it is aquired by websites

#

actual indentity theft level fo data is way more valueable

#

cause not everyone got it

#

supply and demand

#

literally capitalism at its finest

#

scammers like the indepth personal data

#

and will prob pay tons especially for certain groups

#

like the elderly

ashen spindle
#

behold, a leaked image for an AiB 3080 ti

#

wow so much new info

old marlin
#

wtf

#

that is ugly

ashen spindle
#

pretty sure its almost the same as the current strix is it not?

thick elk
#

It's not the same, there is 3080ti printed on there

nova carbon
#

I was hoping for some dank heatsink designs cause of the leaked stock 30 series leaks

#

This just has more metal accents

pale sigil
#

never liked assus design

ashen spindle
#

pretty sure the other images are just fancy founders editions

#

it's just a normal gpu after all so a tripple fan design is going to do well

fair gull
#

why not

#

jet engine fan

thick elk
#

Asus makes their gpu's a bit too gamery

nova carbon
#

Needs more rgb

#

:)

#

The founders cards are gonna need to be cleaned like every 3 months

ashen spindle
#

if that is the one they go with

nova carbon
#

Ya

thick elk
#

To be fair my current gpu looks absolutely hidious

nova carbon
#

Its a pretty cool departure from the norm tho, i always appreciate the founder card aesthetics

fair gull
nova carbon
#

All industrial design and high build quality

thick elk
#

that would actually look better imo

#

the side with the fans I really don't care as that is the least visible side anyway

fair gull
#

just paint over it?

thick elk
#

It's not about the color, it's the plastic that just doesn't look like it properly fits

#

but really it's just looks, I don't care that much

nova carbon
#

Thats part of why i like the founders cards, the fit and finish is impeccable

#

Dunno of any 3rd party designs that come close

thick elk
#

That being said you do have some major tradeoffs in terms of performance and noise

ashen spindle
#

honestly can't tell you because I've never looked at the side profile of gpus

thick elk
#

the side profile and the top are the most visible parts of a gpu

nova carbon
#

V gpu mounts!!

#

Im contemplating adding one after i upg my gpu

reef patrol
#

Prettier than the current RTX ones.

#

The RGB strip parts are godawful

thick elk
#

if I go with a custom loop or with a setup where I can place it close to the motherboard sure but otherwise thermals are way more important

reef patrol
#

(Discord just scrolled down a page - Was referring to the pics further up=

nova carbon
#

And u pay a lot for the FE heatsinks

#

Well

#

I guess the 3rd party ones u can pay alot too but thats also for binning

thick elk
#

another thing for my next gpu will be that there is pretty much 0 chance it's going to be nvidia as I mostly use linux now.

ashen spindle
#

that argument makes no sense

#

even on linux they have the better drivers (for now) and it''s not like amd gets a sudden boost in perf on linux

thick elk
#

I really want to mostly switch over to wayland because of display scaling among other things. This has nothing to do with raw performance.
Just the nvidia drivers on linux are just annoying to work with.

#

most of the time I spend not gaming so having a good desktop experience is very important.

ashen spindle
#

so currently your desktop scaling is not working or what exactly is the issue

#

not really too familiar with whatever wayland is

thick elk
#

wayland is the successor to xorg, nvidia decided in all it's wisdom not to follow the standard set by amd and intel and push it's own thing.
This causes the support on nvidia's side to be pretty bad right now and makes switching unviable.
Under wayland you can scale per monitor just fine on xorg you cannot. Wayland has some nice improvements on firefox. Even ignoring wayland the nvidia drivers have some other issues as well because they are one of the few manufacturers not properly providing open source drivers on linux.

pale sigil
#

I love EGVAs 1000 series design A LOT

ashen spindle
#

idk what xorg is either, but the point is you can have 200% scaling on one and 100% on the secondary I guess?

thick elk
#

more like 125% and 100% 100% 100% but yea

#

actually my primary is 100% one of my 3 secondary's is 125%

#

Either way there is a reason why the most popular gpu on the hardware survay on linux is the rx 480 (probably also includes the 470 570 580 and 590) where on windows the gtx 1060 wins by a mile even combining these cards.

ashen spindle
#

sure, but there is also stuff like nvidia cards are mostly used by gamers and lol linux gaming, or CUDA which isnt on linux etc.

crimson wigeon
#

CUDA is on Linux

ashen spindle
#

WSL doesnt count

crimson wigeon
#

Infact it's one of the top platforms for it because of machine learning

ashen spindle
#

am I mixing it up with something thonk

crimson wigeon
#

Yes you are

ashen spindle
#

hrmm I cant remember what it was then

#

anyway, the most exciting rumor that floats around, is that nvidia is improving their software stack, not needing to log in anymore etc. because amd is much better in that area

#

truly the thing im most excited about lmao

thick elk
#

for both goes the software stack is not on linux anyway so it's not really relevant.

#

Outside of linux my general preference is to go with amd all things being equal. If only to restore the balance, that being said I did get my 1080 during a time amd just was not the best option.

ashen spindle
#

idk, as a single person customer I know it makes no difference who I buy from so I just get what's best for what I need

#

and yeah, obv the login doesnt matter for scaling, but my thought is that might also mean in general better driver/software support etc.

chrome estuary
#

holy shit not needing to log into nvidia anymore would be great

thick elk
#

Like I said all things being equal, so far my driver experience on windows has not been better one way or the other so if the performance is the same the price is the same and the power consumption is the same even on windows I would choose amd. If the sum of those parts would have favored nvidia yes I would have gone nvidia.

and with software stack not mattering I just mean Neither Nvidia nor AMD have their software stack on linux.
Nvidia has it's own minor utility for basic config (that is a general pain) and amd mostly relies on the open source world to do what it does best, creating the tools themselves.

ashen spindle
#

yea fair points, I also had no issues when I had my 7870, the only part where I heard amd gpu having mroe driver issues has been recently with vega/navi

thick elk
#

I also heard that they somewhat eleviated that lately and I am sure Nvidia has had it's rough spots on that front as well.

#

during the peak of the problems that was however a cause for concern

vagrant marsh
#

Sure. I mean, it wasnt a year ago nvidia had problems with a driver that made the mouse pointer stuck on the main screen while you could still move the mouse to another screen but invisible

#

However, nvidia took 2 weeks to fix that

#

Not 2 months

ashen spindle
#

sure everyone will sometimes have software issues, but Vega7 for example still have cases where they just have black screens, amd knew the issue, then in the latest driver it's just not listed as known bug anymore

#

like if you got a 7 and have that issue, you're just fucked

vagrant marsh
#

Or who could forget the botched first run of 2080Ti's that didnt work out of the box

thick elk
#

radeon Vii is kind of a bad card in that regard in general in terms of windows support. I certainly don't like how they handled that one.

ashen spindle
#

it's not really windows support, some of the card had issues that were fixed in april for some, then the other issues were known and since earlier this year no longer listed but are still present

#

obviously rdna2 drivers could be amazing and ampere drivers shit the bed for months, just based on the most recent experiences that's a bit unlikely

#

but that's why im happy AMD got multiple supercomputer contracts, because there they get devs from those teams that work on the drivers with them

thick elk
#

Are there any recent survays / recent rma rates that point to systemic problems on amd right now?
Because anecdotal some people are having problems can be somewhat biased especially if there was a problem before.

Also the issues on windows and linux are separate, most of those black screen issues seem windows specific are windows specific. It has to do with the way windows handles drivers and how amd handels that. On linux the drivers are part of the kernel and are more robust in that regard.

ashen spindle
#

I don't think either vendor has any big issues now, I don't think it's anecdotal if you just have so many more people complain about driver issues than 2080ti artefact issues etc.

#

but I cant say for sure if there are solid numbers on either anywhere

#

I just remember it because I saw someone posting on twitter a while ago how the adrenalin update that removed the 7 flickering issue didn't fix his blackscreening issue

vagrant marsh
#

What if the chips are faulty?

#

Cant fix a broken card with drivers

fair gull
#

buy a new bag of chips

#

i like the salt flavored ones myself

vagrant marsh
#

Thats the proper amd fanboy response

#

Reeeee

fair gull
#

???

#

i mean i also like paprika flavored

#

but in general i like salty food

#

or more acidic foods

ashen spindle
#

What if the chips are faulty?
how does that matter in a discussion about drivers? thonk

fair gull
#

what if the driver had too many chips and some alc

vagrant marsh
#

Drivers cant fix broken cards

fair gull
#

then the chips matter

vagrant marsh
#

@ashen spindle

ashen spindle
#

??? thats still a completely different point

vagrant marsh
#

What if the soldering of a chip is off a little. Driver cant fix that

#

Yea, but people complaint drivers are bad. But what if theres a manufacturing problem

crimson wigeon
#

reimplement said chip in driver

ashen spindle
#

I dont give a shit about hardware if im talking about the software???

vagrant marsh
#

-.-

ashen spindle
#

the argument was not if amd or nvidia is a better choice to buy or a talk about a certain model

#

it was about the software

vagrant marsh

reef tundra
#

Windows just has a UI design issue in general. Mostly the consistancy bothers me, completely the "new" audio manager menu is useless beyond basic use so advanced settings, which is the old windows 7, to manage the audio devices. The godfolder on the desktop is real nice when using windows 10, luckly my Arch build does all that I require. The best part? I control the bloat.

frozen anchor
#

well if you want the decent audio manager you have to right click your volume in bottom right and go to sounds

#

but its not like it would be hard to just add "advanced settings" option to the audio manager

why do you need 2004 thonk

reef tundra

it just works and testing is impeccable. No actual testers, professional in-house with hunderds of hardware configurations, needed here

reef patrol
ivory geyser
#

@reef tundra why dont you disable windows updates and leave them only on manual, on-demand approach?

reef tundra
#

Which they actually had in the past, untill the CEO of smartness thought that users are the best way of testing. Just stagger release and fix issues based on either insufficient information or GBs of data. Which might be hardware specific..

#

Tried that you can only hold the update gate so long

and security patches to default browser to edge are hard to disable

Best way is to firewall all microsoft servers.

ivory geyser

You can just use the group settings.

It works flawlessly

Linus latest video on the topic was quite promising. It seems to be mostly DRM blocking now. And Denuvo mentioned going Linux compatible.

Iirc

ashen spindle

ye, EAC is close to having a linux version too

and other anti cheats prob too

frozen anchor

yeah that will make a lot of games conpatible

eac is used a lot

well eac isnt kernel level

ashen spindle

we are not talking about valorant

nah valorant anticheat is way more invasive

but atleast they actually let you close it now

crimson wigeon

EAC is kernel level

There is already a native Linux version

Wine folks are simply making wine able to emulate the needed kernel functions in userspace, which to me sounds like instant bannination

reef patrol

Valorant's Anti cheat is still bad. So many false positives. It blocked my RGB software. Final straw keklaugh

ashen spindle

something that the epic game store always amazed me with, how it can write more than it downloads

ivory geyser
#

It is unpacking

ashen spindle
#

^

#

you obviously download stuff in a compressed format

ivory geyser
#

Yep

frozen anchor
#

i think other downloaders just dont give you any stats on this stuff

#

so you never notice

ivory geyser
#

^

#

Believe it or not, Epic is actually trying to... transparent... on this.

#

As weird as that may sound

vagrant marsh
#

so it installs on the go, same as steam?

#

but 512mb in 20 mb?

ivory geyser
#

Well it downloads files in compressed format and then unpacks them on your PC.

#

The unpacking takes longer than download on most PCs, because half of your HD/SSD's capacity is taken by the download and the rest by the unpacking

#

So the unpacking logically takes longer

ashen spindle
#

I mean steam does the same, look at the stats I get for this update im downloading

ivory geyser
#

Look at the disk usage

#

That is the same the "write" + download

frozen anchor
#

well for my crappy download speed im sure my ssd would unpack it way faster than download

shadow minnow
#

get a nice polished wooden plate in the length you need
@ashen spindle was thinking about that, not sure about price and where to get it though

ashen spindle
#

idk, any furniture place that sells tables, chairs, shelves etc. usually also has options for that

shadow minnow
#

Also, what size would you recommend for table, that will fit two 27’ monitors, PC case (fractal design s2), and also keyboard with wrist rest. (not sure about table color yet)

ashen spindle
#

idk, I took measures of my corner and got two plates to fit stuff onto and have an L shaped corner table now

#

dont really know the sizes of your room

reef patrol
#

Keep in mind you can't cut those fibreboard table boards.

shadow minnow
#

I have quite large room. Question is what is okay size for that setup 😄 want it to have normal shape.

reef patrol
#

Here's my idea - Look on your local used goods sites. See if anyone's selling a hardwood table and go from there. IKEA sells plenty of good legs for boards.

Or go full steam for a used motorized table 😄

shadow minnow
#

And any recommendation about size from you? 😄

reef patrol
#

Depends on your preference really. My tables are around 2 meters wide.

#

OOF.... 390€ for a Fake Amiga case w. acessories (PSU, DVD drive) Got the Mobo and CPU...but OOF 😄

ashen spindle
#

measure what space you have, the width of the stuff you want to put on it etc.

shadow minnow
#

I do not have any special preference. Just do not want oversized table for all these things, and want table that can fit all these things 😄

ashen spindle
#

then take a look at the size of the stuff you want to put on it and the size of your room and figure it out man

#

like its not really possible to tell you what size makes sense without knowing how far away you like your monitor/ keyboard etc.

shadow minnow
#

I mean, problem is that even I am not fully sure😄. But I know I want monitors next to each other, but no idea about kb.

shadow minnow
#

get a nice polished wooden plate in the length you need
@ashen spindle will it be possible to just make hole to that wooden plate from bottom of it, and left few mm, for wireless charging?

ashen spindle

I mean its wood

#

so, yes

shadow minnow
#

When I search for polished wooden plate it shows another kind of plates, Must use different keywords lul

reef patrol

fair gull
#

theres these mounted tools for workbenches to bend metal

and im willing to say u can bend thick enough metal for pc cases

youd need to detail it with another tool tho for fine creases and stuff

shadow minnow
#

Not fully true

#

Apple does not usually sell bad hardware, just overpriced

#

But not bad by quality

ashen spindle
#

the macbook would like a word with you but is currently busy overheating

shadow minnow
#

But good quality

#

Aluminum build

#

Good speakers

short cove
#

Have you tried those MacBook keyboards

shadow minnow
#

Good mic

#

And one of best trackpads

#

Have you tried those MacBook keyboards
@short cove that was quite a bad thing, but not that bad

short cove
#

Also aluminium build is nothing special, you might as well buy a think pad for the same money which is nearly indestructible

#

Thinkpads are much better built because they're business grade

#

Stuff made to last

shadow minnow
#

But windows sucks and makes it not that business grade

short cove
#

Eh I feel like business grade is less of a buzzword that aircraft grade aluminium

ashen spindle
#

you cant just argue about the OS if your argument up to that point is about the hardware

short cove
#

Business grade is more of a specific target demographic

#

Aircraft grade aluminium is used in basically everything

#

Lmao

thick elk
#

Also build quality as most people call it is mostly about looks.
For an actual durable laptop you would not go aluminium on the outside

shadow minnow
#

I mean just, I do not like windows, there are also things I do not like about Linux and mac (compatibility, software, hardware) that force me to use windows

#

I hate that most of companies do plastic laptops

short cove
#

I can say the X1C is made of carbon fibre reinforced polymer so it's better than aluminium

shadow minnow
#

It means it is lot more durable

#

Aluminum > plastic

short cove
#

The design matters as well btw

#

You can have a shitty design that makes aluminium useless

#

You can design a plastic laptop that allows it to survive drops

#

Glass display also doesn't automatically mean good

#

Glass is much more brittle than anti glare plastiv

#

And is heavier

#

Even expensive monitors use plastic

shadow minnow
#

Overheating does not mean bad quality. All small laptops usually are underclocked

short cove
#

Overheating doesn't mean bad build yes

#

It means shit design

thick elk
#

Well there is the fan placement on the latest macbook

shadow minnow
#

Yeah on air, it is not done well

#

Still Apple has imo high quality products overall. And also not that bad software

#

While Logitech has also problems with software, same razer

short cove
#

Software is subjective

#

Hardware is objective

#

That's what I think at least

shadow minnow
#

Not entirely true

short cove
#

So you see those absolute fucking garbage dual core i3 MacBook airs

shadow minnow
#

When software does not work it is objective

short cove
#

Those deserve to burn in hell

shadow minnow
#

When software does not work 50% of time it is objectively bad

#

And makes bad user experience

short cove
#

True

#

Well I never had issues with W10

shadow minnow
#

Logitech g hub is exactly that, not working half the time

#

This is for example what I like about wooting - very good software

#

Well I never had issues with W10
@short cove I mean, all these things with drivers, scaling...

#

Also worse thing, Logitech does not even bother fixing software

#

G560 speakers - broken drivers, for 2 years

#

Still no fixes

thick elk
#

Some manufacturers can be even worse at times.
Canon for example has one of their scanners with a very broken driver in windows 10. On the US site they offer a optional fixed driver. They do not bother to roll it out to their other sites, or make it the default driver version even though as I could test on at least 10 machines the driver is truely broken on windows 10. And no the scanner was not discontinued at the time.

shadow minnow
#

That is one of things why I hate windows

#

If Apple just did not want ms office

#

They would have bankrupt

#

And there would probably be another os , hopefully better

#

But no

short cove
#

Suit yourself I'll never use subpar hardware

thick elk
#

I'll just stick to linux myself. Maybe I will start booting in windows again if I really want to play a game that does not work well on linux. But since I don't play online games that often and game support is getting better and better I have less reason to do so.

shadow minnow
#

I need windows for games 😄

thick elk
#

This is not the best option for everyone but it is for me

#

Over the past two years or so game support on linux has gotten so much better.

short cove
#

I'm sort of in the middle ground, I don't want garbage hardware but I also can't be arsed to learn to use Linux

shadow minnow
#

I want ray tracing 😄

ashen spindle
#

you already have it, play about any game from the last 20 years

shadow minnow
#

I mean, real one 😄

thick elk
#

Outside of gaming I generally prefer linux which I used for over a decade now be it not full time. So me gaming less and less / working for home is mostly what made my switch mostly permanent.

ashen spindle
#

?

short cove
#

Ray tracing is a meme now

shadow minnow
#

I prefer Linux / macOS

ashen spindle
#

games already use "real" ray tracing idk what a fake ray tracing would be

shadow minnow
#

But games... are forcing me to windows

short cove
#

Path tracing Minecraft memes

#

There's barely any real visual upgrades but tank your frame rate to sub 60

shadow minnow
#

Nvidia ampere will change that

thick elk
#

We will have to see, by that time amd will have their own accelerated ray tracing so we shall see how much better nvidia has gotten / how that stacks up to amd.

short cove
#

Can't wait until AMD gets their own RT and absolutely mops the floor with Nvidia

#

Fucking complacent dripfeed comapnies

#

It happened to shintel it won't take long for the same to happen to novideo

shadow minnow
#

That is pretty fanboish thing to say

short cove
#

It is fanboyish yes, but what I'm saying is true

ashen spindle
#

idk, for now the management of nvidia is not anywhere as close to being as incompetent as intel is/was so I dont see that happening

shadow minnow
#

True^

short cove
#

That would be a good thing

shadow minnow
#

Than AMD would raise price if no competition

ashen spindle
#

nah, good thing would be amd getting better without nvidia getting worse, if they can only get ahead bc the others are failing thats not a great competition

shadow minnow
#

AMD is same as any other company

short cove
#

I mean Nvidia not being trash

shadow minnow
#

They want money

ashen spindle
#

ah kk

short cove
#

Shintel only survives by laptop contracts and pre builts at this point

shadow minnow
#

Because they do Just CPUs

#

And stop calling Intel Shintel please

#

Kinda annoying

ashen spindle
#

sounds better than shitel though

thick elk
#

For market position if both in graphics and in cpu's mind share would equalize. For that to happen I think amd needs to consistently be better for some time. and not just better in bang for buck. On cpu's they are slowly getting there on gpu's they are ways off.

short cove
#

Fine

shadow minnow
#

Intel sels every chip they make

thick elk
#

Intel is just an old bloated tech company. IBM has been in the same spot as well, they will slowly turn around and possibly lose relevance.

shadow minnow
#

They do not make just CPUs

#

@thick elk not 100% though. AMD also had bad times

ashen spindle
#

yeah and currently intel is basically failing in every area, not just CPU area

shadow minnow
#

Problem if they return is so many people becoming fanboys.

short cove
#

They're just complacent

shadow minnow
#

Of amd

ashen spindle
#

I really dont mind fanboys if that means the products I can get are better

#

I dont care if idiots are right or wrong

short cove
#

in the end consumers benefit

shadow minnow
#

It means exactly opposite

thick elk
#

In general AMD won the mind share on people building their own pc's but for oem's / laptops intel still wins and probably will for at least a few years assuming status quo

short cove
#

Forcing intel to stop dripfeeding would be great

#

Yeah because intel dumps CPUs at super low prices to OEMs

ashen spindle
#

it's called "marketing development funds"

#

and having much more money to burn

short cove
#

Yep

#

Which is basically why they're still relevant

ashen spindle
#

but we've been getting good amd laptops so that is finally changing at least

thick elk
#

for laptops it's also just the first generation that beats intel really.

shadow minnow
#

Now AMD is only good option for CPU in pc under 1000/1400$

ashen spindle
#

the new shenker VIA15 looks like it could be a sick laptop, with just a ryzen and no dGPU so it should have insane battery

#

too bad its not one of the big laptop makers that first made this

short cove
#

I mean basic example

shadow minnow
#

Tiger lake looks very good for iGPU

ashen spindle
#

tiger lake looks very average

short cove
#

I can buy a Ryzen 9 for the price of a 9700K

#

Nuff saif

ashen spindle
#

ye

shadow minnow
#

10600k can be good though 😄

thick elk
#

in some ways but you are also paying about € 80 more over the 3600x for a marginal improvement in gaming performance

#

even worse if you compare the regular 3600

ashen spindle
#

or even more if you want to get true value, the 3300x is currently really good

thick elk
#

there are arguments why you would prefer to not go quad core right now though.

shadow minnow
#

Intel has only 2 competetive CPUs

#

I5 10600k and i9 10900k

#

I mean “competetive”

#

For best performance i9 and for best performance in it’s price point i5

#

Although they are not worth it if

#

You are not going for completely best performance in games

ashen spindle
#

yeah its best performance in its price point because amd has the same perormance at 100$ less lmao

shadow minnow
#

I5 better performance if OCed, even better as ryzen 7

#

*in games

ashen spindle
#

ok at that point we are at like 200$ more bc you need a better cooler as well

shadow minnow
#

For i5 you can get better performance even on air

#

But it is so small difference

#

#

So not worth it

ashen spindle
#

I doubt you can OC it any bit on the intel stock cooler lmao

shadow minnow
#

Most of people buy coolers also for AMD

ashen spindle
#

what people do or don't do doesn't change what the hardware does or costs....

thick elk
#

not buying a separate cooler is pretty common especially since the gains by overclocking the cpu are not that great and outside of that the stock coolers are fine. Most people don't even bother to overclock anyway.

shadow minnow
#

I mean, enthusiast market. Most people buy prebuilds outside of that😄

ashen spindle
#

what people do or don't do doesn't change what the hardware does or costs....

shadow minnow
#

I said, i5 is not worth it for 99% people

ashen spindle
#

you said " best performance in it’s price point"

shadow minnow
#

Yeah. For gaming it has best performance in it’s price point. No matter how bad value it is.

ashen spindle
#

yes my point was the 3600(x) is basically the same at 100 bucks less

shadow minnow
#

Price point of CPU has nothing to do with buying extra cooler or not

#

Yeah that is true

#

I am saying it has terrible value but +1-5 FPS so best performance at price point 😄

#

No matter value

#

And cheaper CPU being just bit worse

#

3600 is better value 100%

#

But even 1% means i5 has better performance even if it was 10 times the price 😄

Looking for some monitor arm for 27” monitor, that is wall mountable, can be restricted to be quite short, and will not be visible (covered by monitor) that offers swivel, pivot, height adjustment and tilt like features. Any recommendations?

thick elk
#

personally prefer to use desk arm as with wall mounting things get annoying if you have to move your setup even a little bit. As for recommendations most are fine if they have the features you want.

thick elk
#

I have something somewhat similar in terms of scripts, maybe these are useful:

#

I use mine to convert flacs into opus, copy mp3 to a separate directory and apply replay gain

#

and yes the copy mp3 one is a shameless copy - paste with things I don't need removed (mostly)

fair gull

why the copying out tho

just convert inplace

and delete the mp3s after

shadow minnow

@thick elk was also looking for some desk mount for max 100$, but most recommended amazon stand looks very industrial / office style, and would not fit my setup. Want something simple, can be bit gamer looking (but no red color lul )

most games on Linux only officially support ubuntu

short cove

@digital cliff @fair gull it's chinese

#

it's not even that hard to differentiate

frozen anchor
#

i know manjaro is used for gaming a decent bit

wheat plume

yeh it is!

#

i can tell why, its fast and comes with steam and nvidia drivers preinstalled

#

and its arch so you can get the newest drivers and things fasdter than ubuntu or debian

frozen anchor
#

Yeah

thick elk
#

It's not exactly arch but arch based. Mostly packages take a few weeks longer and there are different kernel options.
There may be some other differences as well. Personally I just stick to regular arch but if you prefer things to be preinstalled it's a decent option.

frozen anchor
#

I heard Manjaro also has options to use proprietary Nvidia drivers that are better than the open source

thick elk

Most major distro's do, open source nvidia drivers are garbage.

frozen anchor

Ah

I mean most use it as the default

wheat plume

I heard Manjaro also has options to use proprietary Nvidia drivers that are better than the open source
@frozen anchor yeah, if you choose "non-free" in the menu that shows up before it loads the desktop when you boot from live USB, it will auto install the proprietary drivers

why wouldnt it

fair gull
#

its globbing but recursively

ashen spindle
#

it sounds like googling so prob some glob tool?

fair gull
#

glob is basically patterning filenames with wildcards

#

*.txt for example is a glob

#

In computer programming, glob patterns specify sets of filenames with wildcard characters. For example, the Unix Bash shell command mv *.txt textfiles/ moves (mv) all files with names ending in .txt from the current directory to the directory textfiles. Here, * is a wildcard s...

#

just this

#

but

#

recursively

#

so found matching folders

#

also get globbed

#

and so on

#

usually u dont wanna do it recursively tho

#

unless youre building a file search on the entire disk

#

im still on the side of inplace conversion

#

and then deleting

#

so just a script that recursively converts and deletes

#

oh

#

why tho

#

i dont get mp3 to flac anyway

#

i personally use them how they come even on the go

#

thats why idc i got 1tb on my phone

#

not to mention i could stick an sd card in

#

yes

#

thats why i said

#

that why idc

#

i have the storage

#

i dont need to mingle with it

#

u got the music tagged?

#

so why all this work

#

just make the folder structure compatible with the tags

#

thats way you can even automate ingress

#

so it places it into basepath\musician\album

#

instead of all this weird globbing stuff you read out the meta data

#

and move it accordingly

#

cleaner structure and its reconstructable

#

obv fails as soon as u dont have metadata on a file

#

those should be in the meta of the files

#

not like its not setable

#

album covers in folder always sound like pirated shit

#

how will globbing help then tho

#

ud basically need to build an algo that would find the base folder of an album

#

sounds like way more work to me then having nicely tagged files

ngh welcome to the eu

fair gull
#

ya 80bucks a month for unlimited mobile data

#

na

pale sigil
#

There are plenty of artists tho

fair gull
#

id rather save that money

crimson wigeon
#

Yeah that

pale sigil
#

i pay like 10 euro for 4gb

fair gull
#

i pay 60 for 20

pale sigil
#

the network im on is cheap

#

but its bad

#

4g is like 10 down

#

highest ive seen was 40

ashen spindle
#

I pay 0 for 1

pale sigil
#

if i was relying on my phone data so much i would not be with this company

#

is pretty much budget

ashen spindle
#

tbh thats the only good thing I got from vodafone buying up my old ISP, I go from 0.5 data in a month to 1 gig

#

not that I need it gloryKeK

pale sigil
fair gull
#

callum btw what did u mean by "1411kbps is enough for me"

pale sigil
#

meh they changed pricing

fair gull
#

that is flac/wav

pale sigil
#

yes on deezer

#

i was kinda being ugh

#

trying to be funny but failed

ashen spindle
pale sigil
#

xD

vagrant marsh
#

i got deezer, together with t-mobile unlimited music

#

i pay 30 euro for deezer always, 10gb of data, and datafree music*

*only available for certain apps like deezer and spotify :p

#

i can extend my contract, and that will cost me...exactly the same

#

usually they offer you a lower price a few years later for having the same, but not this one

#

so im thinking of switching provider. Tele2 offers alot of data, but their network sucks in the netherlands

#

or this. when you choose an unlimited data package, you are also forced to choose unlimited calling/sms which costs extra. if you have unlimited data, you can also do alot of whatsapp calling and those bastards know that, so they earn less out of phone calling. so they make you charge extra for that to compensate

#

jesus christ. im seriously looking at other offers but none of them seem to be any better than what i got right now.

#

one of the providers even hid the fact that they got more data to give, but because of a 'special action' they wont show it to new clients

What is better place for second monitor? On left, or on right from the main one?

frozen anchor
#

i would go on the right

#

but as long as you have your main monitor directly infront of you it doesnt really matter

crimson wigeon
#

Wherever it's more comfortable for you

frozen anchor
#

some people also put it on the top

fair gull
#

so whats the best way to cut a 4x4 straight with only my hands and a saw

timid chasm
#

No tape measure or anything?

#

I assume this is a cross-cut?

#

Literally just a saw? like no pencil?

shadow minnow
#

I mean, I am not sure how is it, and I can not try it before having my setup complete, and I do not want too small table to than not fit all these things

thick elk
#

What is best really depends on what you want / what looks best in your room.
Personally I have my 4th monitor on the right but that is mostly becase of the way I set things up.

shadow minnow
#

Any normal looking monitor arm/stand (not office or industrial looking) for 27” monitor?

orchid silo
#

For only one arm?

#

Stand or gas arm?

shadow minnow
#

Does not matter

orchid silo
#

Budget?

#

(If cheap is what you want)

thick elk
#

Be caerful with those, I made the mistake of getting a tripple monitor one supposedly for 27 in while in reality I had to hack something together to even fit 1x 27inch and 2x 24 inch.

#

generally you should take something that can fit something bigger than 27 inch

shadow minnow
#

That amazon one is what I mean by office looking. I just do not like that look

thick elk
#

or look at the specs for the distance betwen arms.
And that yea

frozen anchor
#

what look do you want? thats the look most will have

shadow minnow
#

I mean normal look, can be bit gamer like, will send photos of what can it be like.

frozen anchor
#

if you just want a monitor stand theres probably plenty of those

#

but monitor arms will always look like whats linked above

shadow minnow
#

Can’t find any good

#

When I type in monitor stand

#

I just get arms

shadow minnow
#

This has all required features, But I would prefer sth smaller

#

I mean stand size

#

So rather monitor arm

frozen anchor
#

if you want an arm you wont get the sort of look you linked

shadow minnow
#

This is not bad by look

#

But by height adjustment it is lul

shadow minnow
#

Also, it is bad size

#

Either too small or too big

frozen anchor
#

just get custom built quantum monitor arm that can change size 👍

shadow minnow
#

Sounds great lul

misty pier
#

yeah I have the same one with dual arms

@fair gull run a line on all the sides and cut along the line on each side separately
This would of be the best bet if you can get a straight line made. You can use the lines on each side to keep the saw in line and just do that on all sides

ashen spindle
#

eyy, we got a new codec, H.266 is finalized

shadow minnow
#

H.267 when?

crimson wigeon
#

ugh, absolutely proprietary

ashen spindle
#

sure and licensing might be a headache again, but feel free to show me a working, equally good open source standard that people can get around to use and not just one that might fit but isn't used by anything

crimson wigeon
#

AV1 of course

ashen spindle

eyy the XT ryzen cpus are out

#

as expected they are basically the same and not worth at all

overclocking potential aside

misty pier

7nm++

#

🤔

ashen spindle
#

nah its on the same node

misty pier
#

yikes

ashen spindle
#

just miniscule improvements on the side of tsmc so they can go for minimal higher binning

#

but minimal literally means, multiple tests to get 1fps more in a game

misty pier
#

huh apparently there's a 3800xt as well

ashen spindle

apus coming on 21st allegedly, those should be much more interresting

#

thats

shadow minnow
#

I mean, xt CPUs for gaming are actually less value for gaming than intel 10th gen

ashen spindle
#

barely less fps at much better prices isn't really less worth, it's "they still arent the best but have a way better perf/$"

shadow minnow
#

I am talking about xt CPUs. Nearly same performance at lot higher price. It is like, rather normal 5 3600, or if I want to spend more on more performance, than i5 10600k, but 5 3600xt should be no go CPU.

ashen spindle
#

its literally the same msrp

shadow minnow
#

But 5 3600 has gone down by price, it is much better value now

ashen spindle
#

retailers just have lowered the prices for the other parts, that just makes those cpus an even better deal

shadow minnow
#

Yeah, but msrp does not matter

ashen spindle
#

but if you were just to compare xt price vs intel counterpart, you still have cheaper amd cpu for basically the same gaming performance

#

and multiple places did reduce the other prices yes, doesnt mean the msrp changed, in many places they cost the same still

shadow minnow
#

I mean, all high end AMD CPUs apart from normal 9 3900x have basically same gaming performance, so 0 extra to get from buying higher end AMD CPUs, while higher end Intel gives you at least some boost in performance.

ashen spindle
#

yes that doesn't change that " xt CPUs for gaming are actually less value for gaming" is wrong

shadow minnow
#

There are actually Intel CPUs that have higher performance than more expensive AMD CPUs. I do not really understand why people are getting higher end CPUs than 5 3600 for gaming, when they want good value.

ashen spindle
#

higher quality silicon so better OC, future proofing idk

shadow minnow
#

More cores for future proofing is one possible thing, but there is nearly no difference in silicon quality

#

But imo rather get intel than, so you at least get better gaming performance. (I mean, starting with i5 10600k, and higher)

ashen spindle
#

I mean thats just wrong, every 3950x has a much better power curve than 3900x because it needs to stay in the same TDP

shadow minnow
#

I mean, I just do not understand why people overspend on AMD CPUs more expensive than i5 10600k for gaming, when they can get more performance from i5 10600k for smaller price (although there is no big performance difference)

ashen spindle
#

I cant really tell you that because I dont really see people doing that
