vagrant marsh
#

any1 here known with cinebench?

#

what does it mean when cinebench crashes?

wheat plume
fair gull
#

1795$

#

jebus

#

could buy a real good pc for that money

wheat plume
#

could you get one with a 2060 with that price?

ashen spindle
#

easily

zenith sonnet
#

@vagrant marsh usually, that your system is unstable

vagrant marsh
#

Hmm. Im trying to oc my 3600. It passed 4.4 on 1.325v.

#

Guess 4.5 is too much

#

according to cpuid core voltage during aida64 stress test is only 1.284 at most, so i think i can take that even lower

#

i find it weird that cinebench crashes but aida64 stresstest does nothing.

#

i find this weird. when i used ryzen master earlier, it did a max overclock of 4.3, and for some reason that caused all kinds of issues for my pc, where at the end i had to reset windows in order to fix it.

#

what is pbo?

#

im not sure, i just clicked on auto overclock and that went to 4.3

#

im not sure i used this pbo

#

4.4ghz on 1.3v, temp is around 70

#

its weird. when im on idle the core voltage is 1.282, but when in use its 1.248.

torpid monolith
#

All things considered the laptop isn't bad at all

ashen spindle
#

with renoir released? heavy disagree

zenith sonnet
#

@vagrant marsh You might be aiming too high
For actual usage, go with PBO +200 MHz, and higher current limits

Classic all-core OC aren't benefitting Ryzen all that much

#

I'm actually using my 3700X at stock settings, outside of benchmarks even PBO didn't add much real world performance

vagrant marsh
#

im not sure

#

i just did 8 passes on cinebench 20 and 4.4 on 1.300 volts seem to be stable

zenith sonnet
#

Single thread score?

vagrant marsh
#

need to test that

zenith sonnet
#

1.3V is a hell of a lot of juice for a Zen2 CPU

#

70Β°C is really streching it there

vagrant marsh
#

it says the max it used so far (this is with the all core test) is only 1.275

zenith sonnet
#

Alright
But you certainly don't wanna go higher than that

vagrant marsh
#

im not

ashen spindle
#

software voltage readings on almost every board are not accurate, so that might very well be 1.3

vagrant marsh
#

well, my pc doesnt crash so i guess my voltage is higher than neccesary

zenith sonnet
#

What voltage Ryzen can handle heavily depends on current, and temperature

hard thicket
#

pbo is useless change my mind

zenith sonnet
#

Degradations comes silently

vagrant marsh
#

meh

zenith sonnet
#

It's not useless
But you need to be able to keep the chip cool

#

Which isn't easy

vagrant marsh
#

70/71*C doesnt seem too hot

hard thicket
#

well on my customloop all i get is more draw

zenith sonnet
#

Even under custom water

#

That's hot

hard thicket
#

its not hot

#

thats lower than normal operating temps

#

people run zen2 on 80average

zenith sonnet
#

Zen 2 likes to stay at 50Β°C

hard thicket
#

likes doesnt mean it should

vagrant marsh
#

i have a be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4, its one of the bigger air coolers

zenith sonnet
#

Those chips are more temperature sensitive than you think

hard thicket
#

50c can't be even reached on a dual 360mm rad

#

without tweaking atleast

#

and it's heavily dependent on the binning of your unit

#

some people can't get lower than 90 under a custom loop

vagrant marsh
#

i think above 80 is hot tho. if i remember correctly my 6700k did 1.46 at 1.320v

#

did 80+

hard thicket
#

remember it actually starts thermal throttling at 95

#

thats plenty of headroom

ashen spindle
#

you can not compare voltages between different cpu architectures AT ALL

hard thicket
#

^+

vagrant marsh
#

single core score of 508

#

according to guru3d, the single core score is usually 462

hard thicket
#

silicon lottery is a thing

#

my 3900x also boosts up to 4650mhz while some people dont even reach the 4450's

#

shame that there is such a big variation on binning

vagrant marsh
#

gamers nexus says their 3600 needed 1.4v to reach 4.3ghz

#

weird

hard thicket
#

and some people can do that with 1.28v

vagrant marsh
#

well, if i believe hwinfo, i only need 1.275 for the 4.4 clock πŸ˜›

#

and if i was adventurous, i would try it, but i wont

hard thicket
#

Ehh i wouldn't trust on voltage monitoring anything but cpuZ and master

#

has been even confirmed from AMD

vagrant marsh
#

im not gonna install ryzen master ever again. i had to do a windows reset to get rid of that garbage

hard thicket
#

lemme guess you tried to memory OC over it ?

ashen spindle
#

even then, unless the board has special circuitry, no software can read the voltages accurately

hard thicket
#

some people bricked their mainboards that way

vagrant marsh
#

no, i didnt try anything memory related with the ryzen master, but it did cause memory problems.

#

computer sometimes got stuck in a boot cycle on memory

hard thicket
#

yeah it was obnoxious in the beginning, but currently it's quite stable actually

#

i also suffered with it on my x570 when it was fresh released

#

i can even memory OC over it

#

without bricking things

#

and it is more or less the best way to monitor temperatures also, there is a huge amount of variations when it comes to temperature

vagrant marsh
#

well, i guess im happy. so my max oc is 4.4 on 1.3v. idle temp has increased alot tho. i think it was only 35. now its lowest is 37

#

average is between 38 and 41

#

too bad the turbo boost doesnt work beyond its specs. atleast not when simple BIOS overclocking.

#

3600 single core stock score of 462. 4.4ghz score is 508. which is 10% increase.

3600 all core stock score of 3421. 4.4ghz score is 3836, which is 12% increase

#

the cinebench score of a stock 3600x is 3714. so my cpu at 4.4 is better than a stock 3600x

vagrant marsh
#

isnt there also the point of electronic waste, making cpu's like the 3000G that no1 is gonna use anyway

feral jolt
#

i suppose half those skus are wifi/nonwifi versions

ashen spindle
#

most of the sales are for OEM's and those often want a variant with just one thing removed so they can save a lot on mass buying

#

thus many sku's come out

vagrant marsh
#

yea. i mean, the price difference between the 3100 and the 3300x is only 20 bucks, but the 3300x performs way better. makes me wonder if the 3100 is really neccesary. and now amd seems to announce 'refreshed' cpu's. 3700xt, 3800xt and 3900xt. i mean, sure, to sell more cpu's, but its not really neccesary with the ryzen 4000 coming at the end of year.

ashen spindle
#

you don't know the difference between 3100 and 3300 do you

vagrant marsh
#

Something with the ccx.

ashen spindle
#

3300 is only one chiplet, the other one two, hence worse, but cheaper bc you only need half the working cores for each chiplet

#

There we go

#

My pc just crashed while playing mw5

#

πŸ’©

#

So 4.4 also aint stable

#

I think im gonna auto everything again in bios. The extra heat gen aint worth it in this weather

vagrant marsh
#

thought that might have been a voltage spike that hit the 1.3v limit and that caused the crash. could try 1.31 next. but i wont. ive put bios on default and auto, tho i did kept the voltage at 1.3v. at auto, it ran just as hot as my 4.4ghz overclock weirdly. now at 1.3v it runs at 63c instead of 71

How? Xd

empty wren

well it installs in the background

and all you get is a notification

after rebooting

wheat plume

I meant how is only have one partition better than Samsung?

ashen spindle

tbh I prefer A/C

empty wren

why not DC

wheat plume
#

Why not ACDC?

empty wren
#

xDD

#

I meant how is only have one partition better than Samsung?
lemme check one second

wheat plume
#

Samsung OneUI is so clunky ;_

empty wren
#

actually you may have the same state something does but lemme ask you a question

#

so when you update, does it go to the recovery?

wheat plume
#

so when you update, does it go to the recovery?
@empty wren depend on the rom I'm using
I'm on pixel experience now and the update downloads the incremental update package and reboots you to recovery but I find it doesn't automatically flash it so I just do that myself

#

But miui didn't go to recovery it rebooted and showed a progress bar

#

On other roms I had to flash the entire new zip file for the rom

#

So redownload the entire new version and dirty flash

empty wren
#

ah so it still is the old system

wheat plume
#

Huh?

empty wren
#

well a/b

#

lets you do this downlaod the update

#

and it will install it in the background

#

then you reboot and then it confirms while it is rebooting that everything is fine

wheat plume
#

Oo

empty wren
#

there is no going into the recovery

#

you just reboot basically same time spent any tiem rebooting and it goes through

wheat plume
#

I only do recovery on non OEM roms

empty wren
#

okay

wheat plume
#

Even going to a custom miui version auto updates too

empty wren
#

well it has you wait right

wheat plume
#

Yup

empty wren
#

with a progress bar

wheat plume
#

Progress bar

empty wren
#

okay that is stock recovery

wheat plume
#

Stock recovery remains on the system when you have custom recovery??

empty wren
#

no

#

you overwrote it

wheat plume
#

Then it can't be stock recovery showing the progress bar

empty wren
#

yeah but with miui it is

wheat plume
#

But how?

empty wren
#

otherwise it should be your custom recovery

#

But how?
well there needs to be a recovery

wheat plume
#

Going back to miui didn't remove my custom recovery

empty wren
#

oh okay

wheat plume
#

I want to try seahawk recovery

it looks pretty and has more features

crimson wigeon
#

It doesn't belong to any repository

wheat plume

some are AUR packages but others are from the actal repos too

crimson wigeon

Packages from repositories become orphans if said package is removed from the repo later

you saying intelliJ may no longer be in the arch repo??

crimson wigeon

wheat plume

oh pamac was being odd

is safe to remove these?

crimson wigeon

So entirely depends on whether you still need them

yeah thats what orphaned means in arch at least

zenith sonnet
#

I'm short sighted, but can use my phone without glasses at 15-20cm
Why would I need to wear glasses inside a VR headset?

young flicker
#

From what I could find quickly it's because the lenses are focused around 2 meters away, so if you can see fine at 2 meters you won't need them but any less and you will.

#

I personally need them for the image to be sharp and I can get by without my glasses in real life provided I don't need to be reading street signs while driving or anything like that.

zenith sonnet
#

I haven't ever used a VR headset

#

But it seems stupid to me that they add lenses that put the image out of focus

young flicker
#

It's not out of focus by default, it's focused at a farther distance.

#

I can't explain it properly but it's necessary.

#

Try VR and you'll understand, words can't do it justice.

#

The best way I can think to explain it is that it's as close to true 3D as you can get with screens, if something is 'far' you'll see it as well as you would see something at that distance in real life, same for 'close.'

zenith sonnet
#

PBO is the weirdest thing

#

Just turned it on again for a run, +200MHz, 1200W PPT, 540A TDC, 600A EDC
Basically unlimited power

#

Single core performance dropped slightly, from 508 to 504 points
With lower boost clocks, lower power draw, lower voltage. 15W on one core, instead of 18W

#

So, power draw went down, while score stayed almost the same?

#

Similar story with all-core loads:
Score went up slightly, 4775 to 4883
Power draw changed from 86/88W to 82/1200W, so down a bit?

#

Shit hits the fan in P95, though
15W per core instead of 8W, 132W for the CPU, 3975MHz sustained instead of 3650
Temps of 86Β°C

ashen spindle
#

im short sighted and I dont need glasses for VR

#

at first its a weird moment bc I knew I didn't wear glasses but something that looked like it's in the distance was still sharp to me

but that went away really fast

and thank god, if I would need glasses for beat saber I'd hate my life lmao

ah

to be fair im also not super super short sighted

zenith sonnet
#

Wouldn't VR be amazing for training eyes, though?

ashen spindle
#

just -1 on both

#

training?

zenith sonnet
#

Afaik, for example Lazy Eyes can be trained away to some extend

#

Also, some forms of far-/near-sightedness can be reduced though training

#

Should be about as effective

#

But adults tend to learn more slowly

#

My issue is astigmatism
Actual physical deformation of the eyeball/lens

#

Nothing to train there 😦

ashen spindle
#

tobii eye tracking is fairly accurate, but there isn't much that makes use of it yet

#

bc its expensive

#

I guess on tuesday I could ask the guy whos working on some other Health VR research project if he knows anything about using vr to train/heal eyes etc.

#

I'm not sold yet that they are releasing the next gen vr thing with the ps5 right away

#

sure but for making bundles etc. it makes more sense to first release just the normal console

#

so people pay full price instead of taking a bundle on release etc.

#

an optional bundle ofc

#

and idk if psvr2 wil double in cost

wheat plume
empty wren
#

that includes lazy eyed people
@prisma crag There is a VR application that supposedly helps undo lazy eyes. It is called Vivid Vision.

I personally don't tend to use a lot of modern IDE features anyway and overall it does seem like it's keybindings can be used more efficiently.
I also don't need to use vim itself per se just its imput mode

fair gull

command line integration works great which is a nice plus.

fair gull

neither kate nor atom are IDEs

just text editors

#

while atom does have project view and stuff it lacks everything else

thick elk
#

I did use kdevelop for a bit but really didn't use the ide stuff

fair gull
#

i mainly use vscode

#

cause

#

it comes with a cli

#

so

#

Β―_(ツ)_/Β―

thick elk
#

I never touched that one.

fair gull
#

vscode can be a mixed bag

#

i know of vim users that liked it after installing the vim extension

#

but i know others who dont like it cause its electron based and jada jada jada

#

for me it works great

#

i can install addons for stuff i want

#

can customize everything

#

and just not use the debugging etc

thick elk
#

I never liked any Microsoft made stuff so I never tried it

fair gull
#

cant really give ms shit atm cause they are taking a path i really like

#

which is opensourcing tons of what they do

#

like vscode, .net Core (.net 5)

#

and what not

#

rn the only company thats truly pushing crossplatform into a new era imo

#

especially with .net 5

crimson wigeon
#

Use Vim inside Code

fair gull
#

@ashen spindle already smells the unity update 5 years after .net 5 releases

#

ashen spindle
fair gull
#

ill just post builds of shit when u cant even use it

#

just to rub it in

thick elk
#

I can't argue against microsoft open sourcing stuff, they are however still a big tech giant that holds a lot of power.
It also wouldn't surpise me if Microsoft is slowly moving towards the linux kernel as a replacement for NT.
It makes sense from a business point of view. Saving a lot of cost on maintaining an technically inferior kernel.

Also they mostly seem to open source to protect, .net would lose terrrain if you can't use it cross platform. So they kind of have to now that the desktop isn't everything anymore. I don't see them opening DirectX up much anytime soon or more actively adopting vulkan.

fair gull
#

desktop is def still everything in the business side of the world

#

and thats what microsoft focuses on

#

business licenses and azure

#

and idk if id call it inferior kernel wise

#

imo u cant really compare them

#

i mean for one the linux kernel is a monolith

#

and windows kinda is not

#

like its a hybrid

#

it tries to combine the best of both worls

#

its more like comparing apples to oranges

#

both are a fruit

thick elk
#

regardless it would save a lot of costs long term if they no longer have to maintain a separate kernel.
Talking long term here having their own custom things run upon a linux kernel would help. Also being the only major non Unix like operating system around has it's drawbacks.

fair gull
#

they wont be able to switch tho

#

one of the things that windows is known for is the backwards compatibility

thick elk
#

They moved away from dos to NT once before so I can't see why they can't make another break sometime in the future.
Be it noway soon.

fair gull
#

this would take another 20 years then

thick elk
#

They could also include a sandboxed NT virtualized compatibility mode.

fair gull
#

they wouldnt

#

cause that would mean anyone could use it even on normal linux

#

which it would be by then

#

id say it would move more towards using wsl heavier and more often until they would not be able to reasonably support old win apps and then just not use nt anymore all together

#

which is what they did with all windows version so far

thick elk
#

that would make sense yea.

@pale sigil i use sftp in vscode fine

sick creek
#

y’all worry too much about your editor theme and not enough about your actual code

pale sigil

theme? nah, its just way better at handling everything.

sick creek
#

if you need the editor to do things for you, you just lack those skills

#

an editor isnt bad because it doesnt hold your hand as strongly

wheat plume
#

it no work still

pale sigil
#

huh

sick creek
#

read the github page on the issue

pale sigil
#

im on about the fact i can do everything within the editor

#

vs like atom i have to download plugins etc

#

like nodejs has been a HUGE help

#

being able to deploy etc

fair gull
#

easy

pale sigil
#

which one are you using

sick creek
#

lol using sftp in 2020

pale sigil
#

why not?

#

what else do you suggest

fair gull
#

use ftp and transfer files manually everytime u update it

#

or use git to first push changes

sick creek
#

set up github actions and git on your server

fair gull
#

then pull

#

and test

pale sigil
#

cba

fair gull
#

cause spamming commits is the best

#

and then reverting them

pale sigil
#

like i dont wnna run all sorts on my server just because i make the odd change

sick creek
#

sftp is unreliable at best, b/c if your connection or the server drops out at all, you may have a bad file. cant have that problem with just doing git pull on the server

#

and if you did, git reset β€”hard HEAD and its all fixed

fair gull
#

are we working with hypotheticals now

sick creek
#

its not hypothetical

pale sigil
#

well thats why you use a program that makes sure that doesn't happen

sick creek
#

actual situation that has happened to me

fair gull
#

in all these years coding i NEVER had a bad file from sftp

pale sigil
#

its happened to me once

fair gull
#

not even once

sick creek
#

well i’ve been doing dev for 15+ years now, and i’ve seen a lot of crazy/stupid shit

#

ftp/sftp is a last resort for me now

#

i almost never use it

pale sigil
#

just because of bad experience to you does not make a protocol obsolete lol

sick creek
#

if i need to push files to a server i use SCP

fair gull
#

guess ill just transfer all my files through git now

#

the terabytes of data

#

just so i dont get 1 bad file

wheat plume
#

I found a solution that worked :D

sick creek
#

terabytes of data in a git repo alol

ashen spindle
#

you removed yourself form your own block list?

wheat plume
sick creek
#

it’s just something github changed so you dont accidentally expose your personal email address in a public repo

fair gull
#

github will thank me that i use their service for file transfers

wheat plume
#

it’s just something github changed so you dont accidentally expose your personal email address in a public repo
@sick creek I made the email my github username@users..... etc

sick creek
#

ya thats a fix

wheat plume
thick elk
#

Nothing wrong with sftp / sshfs, just depends on what you want to do.
Sometimes setting up a git codebase or ansible configuration is really not worth it. Though rsync is also good option at times.

wheat plume
#

github will thank me that i use their service for file transfers
@fair gull how? make a temp repo and pull it down on another device and delete the repo?

sick creek
#

Lol it’s a joke. But he’s just trying to take what i’m saying and twist it

#

My point was that for code projects, like websites or applications that need to run on a server... if you can avoid using a basic file transfer protocol you are better off in the long run

#

If you have like 5 files, then whatever

#

But if you’re using any modern framework and using js with some kind of build system... jesus christ it’s so much slower to use ftp/sftp

#

And error prone

#

You run git pull && npm install after each update (and any other build related stuff ofc) and it’s all good

are cheap TCL smart TV any good?

thick elk

they make some decent ones but also some fairly crappy ones.

wheat plume
#

o

then what brand you suggest below 240 euro? has to be at least 32"

toshiba are good right?

the link has smart tv in it but its not a smart TV....wtf

only 32inches

#

pfff

amateurs

wheat plume

ikr, rookie numbers

#

but our tv has the most chonky ass bezels

#

like the bezels are like 8 inches

thick elk
#

I wouldn't exactly know, just look up the model and panel. Se if you can find anything about it. Alternatively actually look at the thing in a shop.
Still this pricepoint is mostly going to be crappy panels.

wheat plume
#

it makes the tv much larger than it needs to be

fair gull
wheat plume
#

Look, the TV we have is 1768*732

#

ANYTHING is better as long as its 1080P

#

and when you look close you can see so much grain in the photo

and noise

#

I plugin my laptop into HDMI on it and all the edges are off screen so I can barely see the panels

#

its magically bad

#

its a 5oHz panel oh wow

thick elk
#

usually those can also do 60

wheat plume
#

and its still 1366*768

#

wtf

#

ok

#

nvm

#

even the 40" is 720P

thick elk

Honestly at this price point I would just walk into a store and see what looks decent, then order it online as cheaply as possible.

wheat plume
#

true

thick elk

As for brands at lower price points LG generally seems to do quite well.

wheat plume

actually, you need to pay over 500 euro to get a TV thats 1080P

#

ok well damn

thick elk
#

Uh no, looking at the site you linked

wheat plume

they have all these useless features like disney+ certified and control it with airplay and google assistant

and they still make their panel 720P

thick elk
wheat plume
#

o 230

the panels on the cheapest ones could be nasty though. Low contrast TN panels.

pale sigil
#

For me it depends on the anime

#

and if the dub sounds ok or not

#

i dont watch anime properly

#

Like i dont focus on it 100%

#

So reading sub and doing other stuff is annoying

#

If i do love a dubbed anime then i usually dont mind focusing on it in dub

reef patrol

Anything under 65C is good.
