#

except it was planned before the whole covid thing was known..

#

but sure

pale sigil
#

He has so much presence leaving E3 was such a huge shock

#

Anyway....

latent mural
#

I don't think it's a smart business move to reveal UE5 on small platform like that but Epic have so much money they can afford to make weird choices

pale sigil
#

E3 poop so I’m happy with something else

#

It doesn’t matter what they reveal it on

#

It’s epic and unreal engine

#

lol

crimson wigeon
#

Why does it matter it's just an engine the people who it matters to are going to know

ashen spindle
#

and for pr, people will know it when the first trailer shows the unreal 5 logo, not like it matters much for them now

latent mural
#

they reveal the tech to their competitors and were already making a killing from UE4 i don't know what business sense it is to announce it now, UE4 isn't even very old.

pale sigil
#

Unreal doesn’t really have any competition

latent mural
#

thats pretty untrue

ashen spindle
#

oh no, real time graphics really matter to pixar, who used unity for a cartoon movie...

#

ye meant pixar, thought of disney

latent mural
#

Unity, Lumberyard, then upcoming ones like Unigine. There is better software films can use then a game engine.

ashen spindle
#

Lumberyard

pale sigil
#

XD

latent mural
#

Yeah it's a fork of Cryengine

pale sigil
#

XD

ashen spindle
#

correction: it's a joke of cryengine rooKek

pale sigil
#

XD

latent mural
#

Hardly a joke when Cryengine used to be as good or better than Unreal.

pale sigil
#

Unreal is leagues ahead of other engines that are public

latent mural
#

If games like Star Citizen and New World become successful then Lumberyard will see a big boost

pale sigil
#

I love cryengine

#

Don’t get me wrong

#

But it’s not kept up

ashen spindle
#

again, you like the games someone made with it, you never touched the engine I bet

pale sigil
#

And is expensive af to use

#

It cannot compete with unreal

#

It’s hard to use too

#

From what I’ve read

ashen spindle
#

did you use it?

latent mural
#

Unity is better for mobile games, Unigine seems impressive.

pale sigil
#

Ah

ashen spindle
#

depends on what you do, the engine certainly has some strong parts just like some big weaknesses

pale sigil
#

Unity can be pretty amazing but like it’s unity

latent mural
#

Cryengine is very hard to use

pale sigil
#

Unity became its own tramp stamp

latent mural
#

Unity is not as complete out the box as Unreal but can achieve the same results. I prefer Unreal though.

ashen spindle
#

have you seen how the Book Of The Dead unity graphics look?

latent mural
#

unigine looks really impressive i think it will be the next big one

ashen spindle
#

if you want snowdrop go to canada, they dev team is there not europe

pale sigil
#

From what I’ve read it takes a shit more to do something like that on unity vs unreal

latent mural
#

I wouldn't want to work with anything Ubishit made tbh

pale sigil
#

Again I’m no expert

ashen spindle
#

montreal has most of the snowdrop people now iirc

pale sigil
#

I’ve just read and heard from people using them

latent mural
#

@prisma crag if ur good with cryengine apply for a job with star citizen's creators

#

they have studios in US

#

they hired half of cryengines devs back in the day

pale sigil
#

Ye that’s a good job to have cos You’ll keep it forever lul

ashen spindle
#

if its just about wanting a good job you have forever, then ubisoft if what you want

latent mural
#

oh god no

pale sigil
#

Working on star citizen has it perks

#

You get to go to work and do 30 min of work and the rest of the day laugh at donators

latent mural
#

CDProjekt and Rock* are the crème de la crème. If you get into one of those you've literally made it in life. Ubipoop and EA are very corporate and not as fun to work for.

pale sigil
#

You could also try and sell out

latent mural
#

P.S ubi games are 💩

#

you'd have to pay me to buy one

ashen spindle
#

look if you want to burn yourself out and dont mind massive overtime every week then sure, you'd be correct

#

but I really dont like that sort of work

pale sigil
#

Smaller companies can be a good choice

ashen spindle
#

in terms of work conditions, ubi is by far the best option out of your list

latent mural
#

ubi are communist sympathizers

#

took stuff out of siege because the CCP told them to

#

and they are always pandering to political correctness

#

there games are subpar

#

the division is dumpster fire, siege looks like a 10 year old game

ashen spindle
#

in terms of work conditions
man, are you even trying to have an argument or are you just avoiding every topic I mention by accident

pale sigil
#

Division 2 was alright

latent mural
#

they been copy & pasting Creed games for years

#

Anno 1800 isn't very good

#

Far cry another copy & paste franchise

#

we know the mess with Ghost Recon Breakpoint and how that was a failure

vagrant prairie
#

I love CDPR, but from what I've heard, it's a nightmare to work for them.

latent mural
#

I have doubts Ubipoop are even capable of making a good game anymore

#

@vagrant prairie no they have an amazing studio it's just very pressured right now because they are pushing very had for a 2020 Cyberpunk release date

reef patrol
#

It's a nightmare to work for all AAA devs.

ashen spindle
#

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah

latent mural
#

CDPR is one of they few studio i'd buy there game at launch for full price

ashen spindle
#

yeah cdpr is totally just pressured for now, that's definitely all

#

a good product says nothing about how it is to work there and vice versa

latent mural
#

i'd rather work for a company that makes good product than bad ones

#

it's called having pride in your craft

ashen spindle
#

ah yes, pride, the good reason to forsake a good salary, good working conditions, get burnout for and so on

vagrant prairie
#

From what I've heard, CDPR had the same with Witcher 3.

pale sigil
#

CDPR love crunch

ashen spindle
#

if you have pride in your craft you should also have some pride in being a human being worth something

latent mural
#

With Elon Musk's help I will become a Meta human

#

have one of those Neuralink's plugged into my brain stem

#

YeeeeHawwww!

ashen spindle
#

well, if you want to be more desirable for company profit as a main point sure

latent mural
#

@prisma crag placed your order for the cyber truck yet?

ashen spindle
#

biggest change of the entire announcement

latent mural
#

most likely becos they made so much from Fortnite already

ashen spindle
#

no because that was the biggest argument unity had for it

latent mural
#

Todd Sweeney is a good man though he is the champion of gamers

#

@ashen spindle Hmmm? Unity is $40/pm

ashen spindle
#

its free for less than 100k anually of income from it

latent mural
#

Todd Sweeney, Elon Musk, and Trump are my top 3 American influencers.

#

@prisma crag you would be better of buying a cyber truck

sick creek
#

does anyone know of a pc case that takes microATX and aligns the psu vertically instead of horizontally?

#

like the thermaltake core g3 but slimmer

ashen spindle
#

@reef patrol

sick creek
#

i'm having a real hard time, it's like everyone wants to make mini itx/dtx or atx, nothing inbetween

#

where do you live at

#

oof

#

maui?

reef patrol
#

... Vertically?

sick creek
#

@reef patrol like 90 degrees,

#

so the fan would be facing the side of the case

#

to make the case thinner

reef patrol
#

The Core G3 doesn't do that though?

sick creek
#

correct, it doesnt

#

i want something even slimmer

reef patrol
#

I have - never - seen a case like you describe. Sorry. 🙂

sick creek
#

:(((

#

oh well

reef patrol
#

I imagine something with SFX PSU mounts helps there.

#

I mean the Sentry 2.0 was pretty damn slim. Xbox slim.

sick creek
#

yea, problem is most if not all cases that take SFF psu's dont take microatx

#

just mini itx/dtx

#

i just hate how chunky this silverstone sg-somethingiforgotthenumber is

reef patrol
#

Hmm...

#

You might want to ask on SFF reddit.

#

Or something like that.

sick creek
#

i dont have a reddit acct

#

lol

#

thats what i was afraid of

#

the core g3 is still slim and cheap tho

#

so i might still use it

#

was just hoping for even smaller

#

like the lian-li pc-06sx

#

but they dont make that one anymore 😦

#

5 slots where

#

because 5 slots is ATX, not micro atx lol

#

ah

#

yea, that's just stupid. if you require that much space you might as well go ATX

#

like the extra 2 inches or whatever isnt going to kill your build lol

latent mural
#

nobody needs an ATX case these days

sick creek
#

yeah i'm never buying a spinning hard drive ever again

reef patrol
#

They're useful for cold storage. But aside from that....agreed.

#

So glad NVME has gotten so cheap.

latent mural
#

people ATX case then fill it with rainbow puke and funko pops

#

aliens would think those people are very odd

#

i did already

#

spinny drives are for old people and data centres

reef patrol
ashen spindle
#

@old marlin have you found something better for home cctv than what I linked when you were looking for stuff? think I need to set up cameras now lmao

old marlin
#

lol

#

not really

#

stuff got delayed

#

so I didn't get to it yet

ashen spindle
#

ah too bad

old marlin
#

another KO card, I wonder if this one will be a higher tier chip as well

#

550 for the 10900KF

#

surely is competitive pricing KEKW

#

oh also you can save like 20 euros by going with a 10700K insteadof a 9900K

#

which you can add threefold on your motherboard

#

N O I C E

sick creek
#

Mmm love that socket 1200

#

What was 9th gen socket

#

And 8th

#

And 7th?

old marlin
#

especially when the upgrade path seems to be that gen and nothing more

#

well 115x was at it's limit with the 9900k

sick creek
#

Ehm, i dont buy that with intel

old marlin
#

true

#

well

#

if they could reduce power draw

sick creek
#

Did they finally change their fragile socket design

old marlin
#

that would be different

#

doesn't seem like it

#

just a bigger LGA socket

sick creek
#

Pins > pads imho

old marlin
#

maybe thicker pins

#

maybe thicker substrate

#

well pads have advantages

#

higher density

#

less fragile CPUs

sick creek
#

Stop throwing your cpus around

old marlin
#

true

#

but AMD had some problems with bent CPU pins

sick creek
#

Lol i cant really relate

old marlin
#

related to their CPUs not sitting tight enough in the socket

sick creek
#

Never bent an amd pin

old marlin
#

so you could pull them out accidentally with the cooler

sick creek
#

But i have bent several pins on intel boards

#

They get caught to literally everything

old marlin
#

I mean

#

stop throwing stuff in your sockets

#

I guess?

#

could say the same there

#

you get a socket cover

#

put it in there when needed

sick creek
#

I guess. But like, with the amd style it is a straight pin

#

Not some zigzag velcro pin

old marlin
#

never broke an intel board

#

I usually am careful enough

sick creek
#

Oh i didnt say i broke any

old marlin
#

only broke one AMD CPU

sick creek
#

But i’ve bent several

old marlin
#

was no way around it

#

well also never bent any so much I had to actively mitigate it

#

bent some back to shape, yea

#

some DL380 G8 servers

#

with some bent pins

sick creek
#

Yeah i did it recently somehow on the dual cpu board i posted recently

old marlin
#

can blame the socket design for those though

sick creek
#

Was sweating bullets but got them back as good as i could and it booted up fine, recognized cpus and ram so

#

¯_(ツ)_/¯

old marlin
#

well

#

tehy can take quite a beating

#

you just have to approach rebending right

#

on AMD the pins rip internally if they get bent too much

#

was the case with the one AMD CPU with bent pins I had

sick creek
#

The three bent pins were higher than the rest but i got them aligned to the right spots

old marlin
#

we had to use a hammer and a wooden ruler to get it off the cooler KEKW

sick creek
#

Wat

old marlin
#

yea

#

was completely stuck on there

#

didn't wanna rotate

sick creek
#

What TIM did you use

old marlin
#

at that point we were ready to accept that it was dead

#

stock AMD TIM

#

sat on there for years

sick creek
#

Yuck

old marlin
#

was a system of a friend that wanted to upgrade

sick creek
#

Must have been concrete by then

old marlin
#

gave him my i5 2500

#

in return

#

was better than whatever he had

sick creek
#

Ah shit thats the cpu i am trying to find a matx case for

old marlin
#

lol

sick creek
#

2500k

old marlin
#

yea

#

wasn't a k

#

unfortunatley

sick creek
#

Good cpu lol

old marlin
#

got that out of a medion prebuilt KEKW

#

had 2 dead boards with it

#

one was the medion one

#

one was an asrock one

sick creek
#

Whats medion?

old marlin
#

prebuilt brand

sick creek
#

Like dell?

old marlin
#

I think only european

sick creek
#

Ah

old marlin
#

welll

#

kiinda

#

they are the thing you'll see in your local ALDI

#

tehy have some decent stuff

sick creek
#

Ah, lol. Well, american aldis dont have anything but groceries

old marlin
#

well mostly groceries here too

#

medion has some decent stuff though

#

ngl

sick creek
#

Yeah but like here, strictly grocery

old marlin
#

some well priced gaming systems

sick creek
#

I have a hard time with oems tbh

#

Unless its something i cant build myself

#

Which is super rare

old marlin
#

yea

#

they mostly use off the shelf parts

sick creek
#

Mostly server shit

old marlin
#

or parts that are like a normal one

sick creek
#

The intel server i gutted for that dual cpu board was so lame. So much proprietary shit

old marlin
#

they even offer some boutique stuff by now, with custom hardline water loops etc

#

lol

#

you tell me

#

I have a stack of DL380 G8 at work

#

even the CPUs are in little carriers

sick creek
#

Look up intel S2400SC

#

Lol

#

The i/o on it is legit terrible

#

The san isnt good, the sata isnt good, i dont get what its purpose was

old marlin
#

lol

#

existance

#

I guess

sick creek
#

Yeah idk.

#

I decided i’m just throwing ubuntu 20.04 server on it, unplugging the gpu and calling it a day

ashen spindle

iirc that might be a thing related to teams

wheat plume

but teams doesnt autostart

ashen spindle

wheat plume

it wont let me open file location

ashen spindle

wheat plume

nope

search online and disable are the only options

ashen spindle
#

im only using teams' web interface at home so cant check

#

but I remember something like that appearing when we started using teams

wheat plume
#

I dont need teams anymore, Imma uninstall

ashen spindle

and then I just disabbled it

wheat plume

ashen spindle

fair gull
#

21 transistors?

ashen spindle

yes

wheat plume

the website site it has more than twice the transistors as volta

#

they wayyyy underestimate it but its still not wrong

fair gull
#

bruh thats not even a gpu as in pcie gpu

ashen spindle
#

yeah A100/V100 is the chip for Tesla boards, not pcie gpus

fair gull
#

i mean

#

if i open a data center sure ill buy them

#

but last i checked

#

i dont plant on building and opening a datacenter in the middle of nowhere

ashen spindle
#

well I meant 3080 for you :p

fair gull
#

depends on price really

#

rn i have to buy a new kitchen first

wheat plume
#

im so damn happy now.....I found a command to start the oracle listener if it doesnt start at boot up ...

I reallly really fucking wish I knew about this long before now

#

I hate the oracle connection string -.- it puts your login and password in plain view of whoever opens that class

halcyon moss
#

create the string from other vars?

red oyster
#

Yea

#

Just encrypt your password with AES or something

#

Wouldn't make it saver if people really wanted it but it wouldn't be in plain text

young flicker
#

Damn it, I had just swallowed the regular Denuvo pill but I can’t bring myself to support any ring 0 DRM. It reminds me of this old picture:

old marlin
#

too bad that "voting with your wallet" doesn't work

#

at all

young flicker
#

It CAN but you can ignore that part of the image, the point was the hassle you get for being a paying customer.

old marlin
#

yea

#

DRM doesn't punish the one that it tries to defeat

young flicker
#

Yep. It’s funny because online game stores are already a form of DRM themselves. Now it seems like they’ve realized that the rubes will be alright with this type of invasiveness if it’s in the name of preventing cheating.

ashen spindle
#

they can be a form of drm, not all are (just most :p )

old marlin
#

EGS drm is optional for games

#

and all it does is check if a folder exists on starting

#

got that infor from an EGS employee

#

or well

#

he was at that time

#

so very minimal

#

the one on steam can be similar actually

#

don't care about DRM as long as it doesn't hurt the experience

young flicker
#

Ring 0 is something I can’t be alright with on principle. Things like machine activation limits à la SecuROM are also a no-go for me. Otherwise I understand a level of DRM even if I disagree with it.

ashen spindle
#

it just makes no sense after it's already breached lmao

#

like if you still want to enforce it despite accidentely sharing a drm free version bc contracts, sure go ahead

#

but extra deep drm into your system for no reason? no thanks

young flicker
#

Yep, and I had literally just decided to buy the game a few days ago despite regular Denuvo which costs a substantial performance premium to run. I definitely wasn’t planning on using that other .exe, that would be piracy.

ashen spindle
#

young flicker

Does/did for Eternal. I saw a comparison and it was around 15%.

old marlin
#

previous doom was simialr iirc

young flicker
#

I thought it was relatively DRM free and Steam doesn’t mention any third party DRM for it.

#

Ah, I guess it had Denuvo at one point but they removed it. Hopefully they come to their senses with Eternal but they seem to be moving in the opposite direction.

old marlin
#

previous one was denuvo at teh start

#

got removed after 3 months

#

list of those games got taked off of wikipedia btw

young flicker
#

No shit, what list? That’s borderline dystopian.

old marlin
#

there was a list

#

that got denuvo removed

#

and if they were cracked before

young flicker

@prisma crag I think a lot of us who went for the original SE are holding out for another small phone (with the newest chip) that has minimal bezel. The rumored 5.4" iPhone 12 coming this year is the SE successor for us. I'm still hoping it's a flagship, but I'd be happy with just the newest chipset if I can have that size back.

For people who bought the SE because it was affordable, rather than for the tech, the new SE should work just fine.

#

5.4-inch iPhone 12: 131 x 64 mm (5.15 x 2.51-inches)

#

Yeah, it's barely bigger than the 5/5s/SE but has the same screen size as the 6/7/8 Plus, as an OLED display. Basically my ideal phone. I'd happily miss out on the extra 2GB of RAM for that.

#

Employer picks?

#

Yeah for sure

#

That's what makes this a game changer

#

But at the same time it shows the big phone trend because the other models are going up in size. They're just giving one small phone with new tech option.

#

Yep

Hey guys not sure if it’s the right Chanel, my brother made a custom keyboard language layout that includes every symbol and accent so that you don’t have to switch language settings no matter what you want to type (as long as you stay with the English alphabet) would anyone be interested in downloading it in the future? My brother says no one would use it and I’m trying to convince him to publish it

Why do my different displays show full-width alphanumeric differently? The top is from a 22" 1080p 100% zoom and the bottom is from a 15.6" 2160p 250% zoom. I noticed when I set the latter to 1080p 100% that it showed like the top, so is it in the display zoom?

fallow bison
#

is it on the same GPU?

vast moss

I think so

reef patrol

Isn't that Windows' Cleartype messing up a bit?

fallow bison
#

I think it may be related to it not rendering anti-aliasing

vast moss
#

I can do a bit more testing to confirm whether it's the same, but both should be on the integrated GPU

misty saffron
#

full-width alphanumeric

#

monospace?

vast moss
#

Yep, part of the Japanese Microsoft IME

misty saffron
#

send that thing here

vast moss
#

It should be an option in Windows's input settings; let me find where you can set it

misty saffron
#

#

cleartype just shits itself at some point

#

it's fine, cleartype is that way sometimes

vast moss
#

If you're using Windows 10, it should be Settings > Time & Language > Language > Add a preferred language (Install the Japanese language pack)
then 日本語 > Options > Add a keyboard (select Microsoft IME)

#

hum

#

more like "at all times" for me, but maybe that just means ClearType needs patching?

misty saffron
#

what do you mean by patching?

#

it's just coded that way

#

you can get mactype if you really dislike cleartype, i guess

#

but considering it's essentially just a GDI hook, it's not perfect in the slightest

vast moss
#

as in fixing, to add anti-aliasing

misty saffron
#

it's pretty much just freetype made to replace cleartype by hooking GDI

#

only microsoft can fix that 😛

vast moss
#

Yeah, I figure

#

And while at least for now I have the other display so it's not all lost, if I get a new PC I'll probably use just the larger monitor (after all, the smaller one is from my laptop) so for that I'd like to see it fixed

fair gull

what wrong with gcc lol

#

literally the gold standard for c/cpp dev

misty saffron
#

the code it generates is good enough at best

fair gull
#

next thing i know u recommend g++

misty saffron
#

this is gcc assembly

#

line 35 until the end

#

/O2 the gcc way

fair gull
#

well now i care even less

#

i didnt care before u said anything about it

misty saffron
#

just saying it produces literally useless code

fair gull
#

and this would make any modern cpu care why?

#

virtually no difference

#

and theres nothing better

#

if u care so much just contribute to it

#

u certainly seem like u know how to improve it

#

if the code isnt garbage gcc does a good job

#

thats the bottom line

misty saffron
#

and this would make any modern cpu care why?

#

turn off optimization, surely a modern cpu can handle it hmm

#

if the code isnt garbage gcc does a good job
code quality isn't the issue in my example

#

you can't defend inefficiency like that, speed and size always matters

fair gull
#

not passing any optimize flags in debug

#

so ya

#

runs fine

#

i mean i can add -O0 is u really want

#

but it wont change shit

misty saffron
#

you're not supposed to optimize debug builds anyways though 🤔

fair gull
#

i only run debug builds

misty saffron
#

🤔

fair gull
#

why would i not

#

in an INDEV project

#

ya ill just run release binaries all the time

#

and get weird debugging sessions

#

thats what i came for

misty saffron
#

why would i not

#

to profile the code, for example?

fair gull
#

LOL

#

im just done

#

this is hillarious

misty saffron
#

or are you saying testing performance isn't a valid reason to run release once in a while

#

idk why you even started telling me you only run debug builds at this point

fair gull
#

ah yes in a state where literally nothing works yet

#

ill just run a release build

#

and test fucking performance i dont care about yet

misty saffron
#

well excuse me for not knowing nothing works

fair gull
#

truly the way of a good developer

misty saffron
#

i apologize

fair gull
#

i literally todl u its indev

misty saffron
#

um

fair gull
#

prerelease i might consider a release build profiling

#

indev u just dont profile

#

make it work first optimize later

#

everything else is just wasted time

misty saffron
#

"indev" isn't a standard term, could mean literally anything though

#

sorry for not thinking like you do, again

fair gull
#

i dont get how the literal "in development" is smth that could mean anything

#

and i dont know how someone doesnt know it if they are an active dev

misty saffron
#

i could say a nearly done project is in development, can't i?

#

because it is in development

fair gull
#

at that point where ure nearing release

#

its clearly prerelease

misty saffron
#

but it's clearly in development

#

🤔

fair gull
#

lol yes cause at a stage were prerelease literally fits if ure "right before a release" id just say nono its not gonna release soon its just in development

misty saffron
#

otherwise it would be.. not in development?

fair gull
#

baffels me how after all these years of developing i never had to have to explain these simple things to someone who seems to be a developer

#

well imma dip since u dont seem to grasp the simple concept of precedence

misty saffron
#

i'm just fucking with you at this point, but my point still stands: "in development" doesn't equal "nothing works"

fair gull
#

in development equals theres no point in release builds

#

i dont build a wall and make it fancy before the house is finished either

#

u first build it and then make it fancy

#

function first, rest later

misty saffron
#

not a really good way of development tbh, you really wanna make sure shit functions with the optimizations (which could very well break the code/building process) before it's a clusterfuck and tracking down the issue is really damn hard

fair gull
#

to keep at the house

#

just tear down the wall in the way then and build one that has an opening that fits or whatever

#

optimizing smth thats existing is easier than optimizing for non existent functions

#

with non existent code

misty saffron
#

we're talking about testing compiler optimizations

#

which could very much fuck the build process up (on, for example, msvc) while you have no idea it's doing that because you were building in debug the whole time

#

tracing down what is causing the code generation step to take minutes is really no fun

crimson wigeon
#

crimson wigeon

ill just build everything in java now

fair gull

well i wanted to do c for actual cross platform

plus better optimizations

than the byte code c# produces

#

actual assembler

#

way better

#

plus better control over memory

on the other hand

no classes

no inheritance because of it

plus i noticed the java project uses mysql
