6gb/s apparently

sata 3 is 6gbit

realistically you hit arount 500MB/s

#

Anyone know much about Perforce

young flicker
#

I've never even heard of it but I've been out of the loop for almost 10 years.

#

On that note, does anyone know if using the second M.2 slot on the Crosshair VIII Hero restricts the main PCI-e to 8x?

#

This is what I'm looking at snagging tomorrow, I'm just a little iffy about the second M.2 and couldn't find a solid answer.

#

Still not sure what solution I'm going to use for audio, but I'll be building a custom loop.

ashen spindle
#

for lane layouts check the board manual, should be all in those

wheat plume
#

.....

#

$4200 computer freaking hell

latent mural
#

Well, probably a little more, depending on cooler/fans/etc. Though could probably save a couple dollars on the power supply. πŸ˜›

young flicker
#

I read the layout and I could see it going either way. :\ It'd be a bit silly if it did restrict it considering it's a relatively high end board and from what I read the last generation Crosshair didn't.

latent mural
#

I think the issue would be Ryzen 9 provides 24 lanes? So probably 4 lanes short, but maybe not as they are PCIe 4.0

young flicker
#

As for the PSU, I plan on overclocking and after spending all of the money for everything else I may as well make sure it's all fed and safe. Plus, my last PSU was an eVGA 1000w and it's still going strong 10 years later.

#

It's going to be a single graphics card build, and I want to say I read that it has a 16x + 4x mode. The other M.2 is run through the CPU from what I read.

#

Page 28.

#

It doesn't say the 16x + 4x, but it does separate PCIe/VGA and M.2 PCIe.

#

Oh yeah, it's not actually $4,200 for those components either.

#

Some of those prices are inflated.

#

The mobo is only $360 not almost $600 for example, and the proc is $699 at Micro Center just as examples.

latent mural
#

ah yea looks like no problems with the lanes

#

doubt x8 4.0 would bottleneck anything anyway

#

no harm in going big on the PSU. I have a pair of RTX's in this machine, with two-seats (screens, keyboards, etc.) and everything benchmarked I think the UPS shows around 700 watts hauled down

#

The top end EVGA are quite fine, some are seasonic built I think

#

Indeed, though so long as the ripple isn't bad and the stability good, I don't think it matters too much, just buying fancy specs or fancy looks at that point

young flicker
#

I'm going to look into that Seasonic just out of curiosity. What is the eVGA a rebadge of?

#

Ah.

#

The Prime TX-1000 does look like an excellent PSU but it's the same story as the Corsair AX1000, out of stock everywhere.

#

It seems like people really didn't care about Titanium lol.

#

I am.

latent mural
#

it's in stock on Amazon Canada

young flicker
#

I'm in the U.S. and Micro Center's PSU options are actually extremely limited, even for shipping. Like they literally only have four options for Titanium certified PSUs - two Seasonic Primes, 750w and 850w, one eVGA 1600w and a Corsair 1600w. If I do go with that eVGA I'm going to be buying it directly. Couldn't find a list of the rebadges though.

#

The 1000w Prime is out everywhere, even web stores I'm unfamiliar with.

#

Thanks!

latent mural
#

They probably ship to USA - certainly I order stuff from Amazon UK, US all the time, and occassionally one way out there, maybe India? for soap. Will say on the page: https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B07WDQTTWH

#

superflower btw is topshelf, on par with seasonic

young flicker
#

Good to know, I've never heard of them. Looks like it's a Superflower Leadex Titanium GT platform.

latent mural
#

they make a lot of high-end psu's which get badged, similar to the evga ones

young flicker
#

Yeah, I've been out of the loop for a long, long time.

#

I'd love to go to trade shows, I'd be in heaven. Contrary to what my build might imply there's no way I can afford to travel to Taipei though, haha. It's like everybody in the 'hood buying flat screens and subwoofers when their tax refund comes in lol.

#

Also, I can't have that Seasonic shipped to the U.S. 😦 At least the eVGA is still high tier.

latent mural
#

All the same, 011 has PSU in a seperate chamber. Single video card, I'd probably look at something 850w, gold, and put the saved money into something else.. heat won't matter, and higher efficiencies won't save enough power over a lifetime for the difference in price.

#

also you won't see any of it except the ends of the cables

young flicker
#

Oh I know it's complete overkill.

#

I like having options though.

latent mural
#

no harm in that - I have 1200w in my server, I don't think it's drawn more than 400w, but toss it out there lol

young flicker
#

Maybe when the 3080s come out I'll double up on 2080 Tis lol.

#

I do appreciate it!

#

It definitely seemed limited from what I saw.

latent mural
#

seems to be a big gap in price between basically entry level and overkill with the x-series boards

#

ah well wait that may not be a problem, I've been struggling with this for weeks and just sorted it tonight

#

AMD's USB 3.1 is atrocious, so more than 0 of those ports are basically useless

#

put a pair of 10-port USB hubs on the 3.0 ports and think I'm getting no USB drop-outs now but time will tell. 3.1 ports total disaster

#

πŸ˜›

young flicker
#

Weird. You'd think that rolling out new USB standards would be pretty, well, standardized at this point.

latent mural
#

usb standards are a complete mess after 2.0

#

implimentation worse πŸ˜›

young flicker
#

Oh God, that would frustrate me to no end.

latent mural
#

yep. That was my problem as well

#

I corrected it about a year ago with outdated AMD USB 3.0/3.1 drivers

young flicker
#

Sounds like a driver issue.

#

Lmao classic.

latent mural
#

as noted though I've been able to get it working by using a pair of hubs off the 3.0 ports, and also removing the space mouse, that seems wholely incompatible now with the latest workings of windows

young flicker
#

I hate Windows 10 so, so much.

latent mural
#

I just updated to 1909 on the gaming rig. I could easily once or twice-over the person who decided file mangler needed a new search thing with a whiffle bat

young flicker
#

There are so many things I feel that way about. The data collection, the two separate systems for the control panel because it's a Frankenstein's Monster of an OS, the updates, Cortana, etc. etc. etc.

#

I think I'm going to acquire a copy of the LTSB/LTSC.

latent mural
#

I took two weeks playing around in group policy (enterprise ed.) to clear up most of that, bit of firewall blocking, + classic shell & a calculator program to get it useable; all new systems I have in the house now I clone off this one.

#

I believe it's 3 x 4 port root hubs

#

has a ps2 port

young flicker
#

O lord. That must be a pure benchmarking enthusiast board.

#

That's purdy.

latent mural
#

that fan looks like a finger chopper

#

well, that's it for me, early & long work day tomorrow. Good luck with your build there, skipper

young flicker
#

Thanks! Sleep tight, don't let the bedbugs bite.

#

Does anyone know a whole lot about PCIe 3.0 vs PCIe 4.0 for M.2? I know 4.0 is about double the speed in benchmarks but I'm finding mixed information about real world tests vs 3.0. 4.0 definitely runs hotter and I'd rather not have a huge heatsink on the M.2 if it's not necessary, but if the performance is there it's totally worth it.

young flicker
#

I'm honestly surprised it's taken this long for somebody to (be able to) do something like that.

#

I wonder what kind of performance impact it has. It can't be much.

young flicker
#

I looked at the 970 Evo+ but it was more expensive for PCI-e 3.0 and I'm not planning on dumping 2TB into a drive all at once.

young flicker
#

If it wasn't near its' ATH I was going to put my $1,200 into AMD stock because I believe they're going to start taking over the laptop market. So maybe next gen laptops will be a different story.

@reef patrol yeh.... They do that -.-
When the post man came with my wooting, I heard the door of the van and immediately went downstairs to see if it was here

Oh no it was all on me. He did knock, but my new headphones are closed. Couldn't hear him. 😦

Why would you use headphones when you know a delivery is nearly here?

Because they don't give me a time.

maybe i should setup proxmox on my server when i get it

uhh

it is good for A LOT

not ideal for a single server

oh wait

those aren't opticals

so you only get a rattling clickjacket

wheat plume

Click jacket?

old marlin

the thing that creates the audible noise in most modern clicky switches

wheat plume
#

The first two are optical

Their linear optical switch sounds like my previous board
But less metal and scrapy noises

It sounds hollow

old marlin

still rattles

their optical switches have integrated stabilizers

wheat plume

I see

fair gull

@halcyon moss actually no

it sounds like it but it actually doesnt work too well

#

i got lots of errors that had no further explanation and downloading error logs also didnt work

halcyon moss
#

I've been thinking of getting something like an edge router, but that doesnt run the controller right?

fair gull
#

nope

#

if u want it to run the controller ud basically want the dream machine

#

the edgrerouters are pmuch all CLI if u wanna configure them right

#

the usg line is more for GUI/controller based configuration

halcyon moss
#

i'm thinking of turning my previous laptop into a docker machine.

#

also making it a home automation/voice assistant

wheat plume
#

mycroft?

halcyon moss
#

something that works completely offline

#

I had a look at a few, and not sure if mycroft was fully offline

fair gull
#

so basically its pretty shite

wheat plume
#

it cant be fully offline if you ask it things it needs to get from online

halcyon moss
#

well yeah ofcourse..

#

but not like google/alexa for everything.

fair gull
#

im no big fan of offline voice rec cause usually its trash unless u talk rather clear

#

youd need some good NN for good offline voice rec that isnt relying on clear speech

halcyon moss
#

Guess ill find out when i try it

fair gull
#

but ya dreammachine pro is what ud want if its supposed to run ur controller aswell

#

dreammachine pro is basically usg, switch and appserver in 1

#

with digital front display

wheat plume
#

Why is it that sometimes, you have youtube playing your playlist of music and then it suddenly isnt playing from the playlist anymore???

#

wtf

#

-.-

reef patrol
#

Because you're using a video website for music? πŸ˜„

wheat plume
#

so does the Youtube Music app

fair gull
#

no?

#

it uses a music website to play music

wheat plume
#

yeah it pulls it from youtube videos, you ever see those <artisrt name> - topic channels? those are channels made by youtube to stream to youtube music

fair gull
#

wrong it pulls them from a database

#

the same way yt pulls em from a database

wheat plume
#

Yeah , a db of these channels

fair gull
#

both have completely different algos and inner workings

#

heck the player isnt even reused between yt and ytmusic

halcyon moss
wheat plume
#

o

fair gull
#

tbf they arent super huge

halcyon moss
#

no poe on the dream machine, otherwise i'd be perfect :p

fair gull
#

they did gain some attention the past years tho

halcyon moss
#

their aps are great for prosumers

fair gull
#

i like their products in general

#

not too expensive but powerful

halcyon moss
#

oof, 440 euro for the dream machine pro in NL

fair gull
#

thats mostly due to the whole corona tho

halcyon moss
#

there is a price graph, and its the lowest ever :p

fair gull
halcyon moss
#

what is the price over in .de?

#

thats quite the difference

fair gull
#

which is why i assumed corona

#

i havent seen em for 400+ here ever

halcyon moss
#

is geizhals at still the price comparison site to use in .de? it was good when i lived there..

and they only list the big distributors

they dont list API/Pilot

they're on the livesteam, so your answer is delayed i guess πŸ™‚

@old marlin not really tbh

ashen spindle

yeah aside from geizhals I dont really know any either

pls

ashen spindle

you asked for a website, not a scamsite

old marlin

tbh pricecomp in germany is kinda shit

it is better than in most countries

like geizhals is not ideal

old marlin

but pretty good

fair gull

i always end up googling for 10hours

and then saving like 20bucks

old marlin

lol

cba

ashen spindle
#

it covers all the big stores where I'm comfortable recomming purchases there to other people, scraping all sites for potential 10 bucks saved more is just not worth it for me

fair gull

in reality i just check the manufacturer, their rec resellers and thats pmuch it

#

maybe amazon

old marlin
#

thing is

#

it doesn't pick up stuff like mindstar and alternate zackzack

and stuff like the alternate outlet and mindfactory schnΓ€ppshop

#

or amazon warehouse

halcyon moss
ashen spindle

yeah it is missing quite some stuff sadly

old marlin

NL tech market is fucked

like just ebay kleinanzeigen alone is better than the whole NL market

halcyon moss

thats quite a statement

ashen spindle

I am honestly surprised nobody has made a better website for that, with honey making a shitload of money, I would imagine a website could make more than a plugin if done well

old marlin

true

#

was thinking the same actually

#

I mean

#

I would try making one

#

but I am too lazy

#

and I can't earn money with it unless I do it as a business

and then there are the legal problems I have in germany

ashen spindle

could always just team up with someone who already has a business set up or is in another place so you only do the developing part etc.

old marlin

yea

ashen spindle

he knows most of it then I guess lol

ashen spindle

exactly haha

iirc he was about to look for a new house and move, but not like that is happening currently lmao

old marlin

halcyon moss

whats a decent alternative to sketchup these days?

fair gull

fusion 360

halcyon moss

that looks like a complete overkill πŸ™‚

blender isn't ideal for CAD

halcyon moss

just using sketchup for now

fair gull
#

fusion 360 overkill?na fam

its barely enough

old marlin
#

yea

#

like it is powerful for a free software

#

but it still lacks features

ashen spindle
young flicker
#

Shouldn't they be hitting the lower limit soon? Moore's Law has been dead for a while so I thought they were stagnating around 7nm, but 3nm holy shit.

ashen spindle
#

more's law being dead is just a marketing slogan

#

just like 14,10,7,5,3nm etc. are all marketing names that have zero meaning

young flicker
#

For Intel yeah, but I knew it was at least drastically slowing down as they hit thermodynamic limits. Or something like that.

#

Really?

ashen spindle
#

40nm or so was the last time the number meant anything

young flicker
#

I thought 14/7/5nm etc. were actual measurements of one processing unit or whatever.

ashen spindle
#

only means something if you compare it within the same fab so you know which one is smaller/bigger

young flicker
#

Huh. I'll have to read up on that.

#

Basically I thought as they shrunk they die they effectively fit more transistors in roughly the same space. So 7nm isn't actually just 7nm, but is much denser over the same area and therefore more powerful than 14nm for example.

#

I have a very layman's understanding of this stuff though.

ashen spindle
#

wikichip has very good articles if you want to read up on it

latent mural
#

Smaller processes are more efficient and dense, so end up lower power/higher speeds, that much is indeed true. The issue is what is being measured, so the numbers themselves are basically marketting stickers. Smaller are better, but can't compare TSMC and Intel numbers directly.

ashen spindle
#

yeah, numbers below 40 only really mean something in relation to other processes in the same fab

young flicker
#

Good to know, I definitely thought there was some standard when it came to die size.

warm drum
#

Hello friends, highly random but, does anyone have any recommendations for a router? For a relatively small house, but I'm skeptical of the Tom's guide article I keep seeing from 2018 recommending the same router in 2020

sick creek
#

i'm a ubiquiti fanboi but i know not everyone wants to buy into the ecosystem

#

@warm drum do you need wifi built in? or are you just looking for something that is more reliable as a router

#

for a really basic setup, it'd probably be safer to get that microtik router and one of those mesh routers from google or whoever

#

mesh wifi **

#

but they're $$$ so idk

#

i wired my whole house for ethernet and put AP's in the ceiling so i'm biased

latent mural
#

I don't think meshes can be smart, that's a topology of last resort πŸ˜›

fair gull
#

personally prefer to recommend fritz!box to customers but i think thats a more german thing

#

havent really seen them outside of germany tbh

fair gull
#

fritz is a german first name

#

but they are rather good for what they are

#

s0 connector and all for big phone systems

#

ik

#

i mean would be kinda weird for a purely german company to use english words

#

altho box is kinda english and kinda not since we adoptet it as a german word

#
Der Name Fritz wurde gewΓ€hlt, β€žweil ein nicht-technischer Name gesucht wurde, der auch im Ausland augenzwinkernd deutsche Wertarbeit andeuten sollte. β€œ
#

basically they wanted it to hint at german workmanship

old marlin
#

And hansbox would have sounded weird

fair gull
#

i mean there is a horstbox

old marlin
#

lol

#

I wonder how they came up with that name lol

fair gull
#

and dlink failed

#

cause the horstbox is shite

old marlin
#

lol

#

the fritzbox is a fierce competition

#

for a consumer product they are VERY good

fair gull
#

yep

#

they are even good in small companies

#

due to them having s0 ports for telephone systems

#

(some models only though not all of them)

old marlin
#

"mesh" KEKW

fair gull
#

tatoe mash

old marlin
#

ngl I would rather use a 7590 as a telephone system

#

then what we have at work

#

piece of junk from mitel

fair gull
#

we usually combine the 7590 with an agfeo system

urban lynx
#

as a german i connect horst with someone doing a horrible job tbh

old marlin
#

the mitel one is just complete garbage

#

899 maximum entries

#

only people with admin permissions can edit them

#

and they have a max length of 20 characters for name

#

which is more than limiting

#

cause we often need stuff like "Company Name, Location, surname, given name"

#

GL FITTING THAT IN 20 CHARACTERS

#

5-8 characters often aren't enough to give a name that is unique enough for a person

#

since doubled surnames aren't rare

#

the telephone system can also only share the contact list with their DECT handhelds

#

which cost 100 euros a piece

#

and break quick af

fair gull
#

the only mitel one we have is in the city hall

#

luckily they dont do too much shit with it

#

@urban lynx thats what dlink made of it

#

they wanted to compete but actually held true to the name of horst

#

by making the box be an absolute unit of a horst

urban lynx
fair gull
#

many germans in here

#

now a question for everyone in here: why does this pc im working on not show any soundcard

old marlin

lol

fair gull

its onboard and doesnt show up in the device manager

#

and yes im working rn

reef patrol

Disabled in BIOS?

ashen spindle

At least they didn’t call it hansbox, would need to catch fire to stay true to the name then

fair gull
#

wouldnt have seen a way to disable it in bios

reef patrol
#

Could be borked to the point of simply not being detected in Windows. Or your account doesn't have admin rights to refresh the list.

fair gull
#

but imma flash a newer version

reef patrol
#

A cheap USB stick soundcard works wonders on company PCs like that πŸ˜„

fair gull
#

i need a line out, mic and line in

#

most usb soundcards only have lineout and mic

#

lets reboot into the new bios

urban lynx
#

two lines in?

fair gull

yes 2 line in ports

urban lynx
#

... why?

fair gull
#

welp new bios has an audio option and its disabled

#

thanks gigabyte

reef patrol
#

πŸ˜„

fair gull
#

actually has a ton of options now that didnt exist before

urban lynx
#

yay?

fair gull
#

yes yay

#

and the 2 pcs i needed to transfer shit to after setting up win10 also done

#

so they can go out monday morning

reef patrol
#

Yeah BIOS'es are notorious for hiding options. I saw a completely stock BIOS on a gaming laptop a colleague had resurrected a while back. It had 14 tabs and a trillion options to fiddle with.

A - LOT - of "touching the metal" options that could fry the board instantly if tampered with. Voltages and such πŸ˜„

fair gull

almost able to go back home then

young flicker

I remember when that's pretty much what the BIOS was, no excessive hand holding, brick away if you want.

Something something mainstream, something something before it was cool, something something hipster lol.

reef patrol

When you finally get the needed parts to resurrect your custom water loop, but you can't get the parts to fit

young flicker
#

RIP in pepperoni.

#

I was planning on just looking up lots of builds on YouTube and maybe a forum or two but do you know of any good resources for a first time water cooler-er? The stuff I remember is from when people had huge ghetto-ass boxes hanging from the backs of their computers filled with straight water and anti-growth chemicals. Oh and the vegetable oil build was pretty neat.

ashen spindle
#

the corsair hydro x series is quite nice for people new to it, you pay a small premium but for that you get everything you need to fit etc.

young flicker
#

So far I've committed to the G1 Distro Plate since I've got the O11 Dynamic XL, and I was planning on going EK for the CPU and GPU but that's not concrete. I'm checking out the Hydro X right now. I mostly just want to go over it in my head a bunch and learn as much as possible for the actual build.

reef patrol
#

Definitely wouldn't recommend Hydro X. You're overpaying for bad quality.

ashen spindle
#

is it? not heard that about it yet but you deal more with it obviously

reef patrol
#

They skimp a lot.

#

As for help with a loop - Honestly joining one of the Watercooling brand discords (Like EK) is a great starting point.

The biggest question is - Do you want to only watercool your CPU or also your GPU. And do you already HAVE the GPU? (This is where it gets tricky)

The water blocks for graphics cards are very specific and not all cards have a compatible block (sometimes a competing brand has one but not always).

Then there's the question of aluminium versus copper. Alu is cheaper but you must NEVER - EVER - EVER mix the two materials in your loop or reactions (bad ones) will happen. Alu also generally is limited on the GPU side to the "stock" design from nVidia and AMD, locking you out of MSI, ASUS and such on some of their cards where they move around components.

#

Then there's case, amount of radiators and your expectations of the loop (low noise, overclocking, RGB) and so on.

It's not a quick decision and the buy in price is high. Maintenance is a lot cheaper comparative though.

young flicker
#

Oh wow, I wouldn't have known about the mixing. I did find out about the very specific nature of the GPU blocks though thanks to eVGA not offering their 2080 Ti Hydro Copper at the moment, but from what you've just told me that's a good thing for what I was looking at. I'm planning on just getting a reference 2080 Ti from nVidia. This is what I'm looking at so far for the loop. Either way I've already got the G1.

#

Obviously I still need rads, tubes, fans, etc.

ashen spindle
#

put links inside <> to not have it show previews, makes it take a bit less space

young flicker
#

Ah, thanks! Sorry, I'm still pretty new to Discord.

#

Also, wouldn't having two radiators be best for both temps and noise? I know it's more fans but wouldn't they not have to spin as fast?

#

If I get two it'll be in a top and bottom configuration.

reef patrol
#

More radiators, more cooling. Which either means lower temps, less noise (since your fans don't have to work so hard) or more overclock potential.

#

But again - Figure out if you want both CPU and GPU, and if you're going to cool your current GPU. Then hop on over to the EK Discord and ask for some help. There's a configurator wizard guide on EK's website that helps you get started.

You don't HAVE to buy EK parts, but they're quality. πŸ™‚

young flicker
#

I'm definitely doing both CPU and GPU, and my current GPU isn't really a consideration - it's crap lol. I kind of ended up looking at EK by default due to the distro plate that's designed for the O11 Dynamic XL. I tried their configurator and it was mostly good but didn't even offer the G1 as an option. It's good to hear from another person that they're a good company! I will definitely join their Discord and ask for help over there. Thanks a ton!

pale sigil

fair gull

You selfhost that shit

fair gull

gitlab offers you to host it on your own server

its selfhosted

i mean i personally dont understand why ud want to host git urself

but they do they i guess

pale sigil

they dont want their stuff on another server

basically

fair gull

their hdd dies or smth and everythings gone

#

so theres that

pale sigil
#

large files too

fair gull
#

like i get the whole "wanting to own your data" vibe but in this case where u even use versioning to have some backup incase u make dumb changes

#

and then u start relying on hardware that isnt replicated on a very good raid setup

#

well u see the problem right

young flicker
#

@prisma crag Thanks for the info. I only used that pcpartpicker link because it was the easiest way to share the main specs lol, I literally made it when I shared it and haven't been back. As for the cost, an eVGA Hydro Copper 2080 Ti is $1,600 and adding a block to a Founders Edition is about $1,400. In all likelihood I won't get quite as much performance but I should still be able to get a decent overclock from what I've seen.

pale sigil
#

i think its a game dev thing

#

🀷

urban lynx
#

having a server without raid? ... and you are a developer?
something ain't adding up

fair gull
#

not not without raid

#

but ud need smth like raid6 or even mirrored raid 6

#

with 2 raid6 in mirror u can basically have 4 drives fail

#

and still recover

pale sigil
#

i just backup

fair gull
#

but ud also need at least 8 drives

urban lynx
#

i mean, raid stuff basically is a backup of your whole drive, am i wrong?

fair gull
#

no

#

well yes and no to be correct

#

raid 0 is pure striping

#

no blocks are mirrored

#

all higher leves use some kind of parity

#

but most common raids allow 1 drive to fail

#

if more fail u lose data

#

my plan is to use a raid 6 config

#

on 8 drives

young flicker
#

I know it's not equivalent.

#

Hydro Copper is the FTW 3.

fair gull
#

while i thought about a completely selfhosted git id only do it on a rented kvm server cause they have shit ton better raid setups than i do

young flicker
#

The PCB layout is different. Obviously there are "levels" of FTW3 but it's different enough that it takes a different block.

#

Yeah, I checked them out.

pale sigil
#

gitlab is limited sotrage right

young flicker
#

It's in EOL.

#

One of them is anyway.

fair gull
#

@pale sigil not that i know of

pale sigil

for private projects?

fair gull
#

wha

#

its selfhosted

#

it runs literally on the server they want

young flicker
#

Okay I'm not sure what points you're trying to make. Thanks for the attempt at help though.

fair gull
#

i could spin it up in a linux vm

pale sigil
#

i thought you meant the actual site

#

lol

fair gull
#

the options are github, gitlab or just git

young flicker
#

I'm planning on selling and upgrading when the new cards come out so I'm not too worried about a small performance hit vs the FTW3.

fair gull
#

gitlab did some shit decision lately and i wouldnt super recommend it unless youre super into some weird shit of hosting it urself

young flicker
#

I'm aware.

fair gull
#

just running git well u can do it but ull be hugging the cli of ur pc 24/7

#

the best option will be github for now if people like it or not

#

especially after they opened up repos to anyone even without paying

#

so u can have 200 people in ur private repo and never pay

a lot of the server market will stick with intel

just because the applications are optimized for it

ashen spindle

sure, but only because they cut prices by up to 80% or else it would've been cheaper to change it lmao

old marlin

not sure if that is the case with switching

since newer intel stuff isn't that much faster anyways

if this leak is true

not really, depending on what project, reducing powerdraw and # of server racks needed can give you same performance at much much cheaper cost per time, which can be a good argument to change it up

yea

#

well if yo uare a big software company

it may be the case that you have over a decade of intel optimizations

also with intel optimizing for you

#

so switchign can be a problematic

#

which is not what you want

#

since you need 24/7 reliability

#

if cloudflare is down so is half of the internet

ashen spindle
#

sure, but aside from avx512 amd can do everything else, so you dont need to change much, just prioritize stuff differently etc.

#

I'm honestly more surprised they now start with epyc and arent using next gen rome by partnering with amd

#

guess this way they can transfer it to a non early access chip and still get ready for new epyc end of this year

old marlin
#

we got a new fire alarm system isntaleld

and those guys managed to just connect a second DHCP to our wifi

#

how tf do you manage to do that

#

if you work in a compeltely separate network

hoary dock
#

Maybe DHCP over WiFi

I was writing to vodafone (Vodafone) because we had a lot of short WAN disconnects over the last days

#

and I wrote down all the times when it failed and asked how to get the times to them

#

They answered "With the data we have we can exclude a defective 'EasyBox 804 xDSL'. And I should watch it over a longer timeframe and get back to them"

#

Funfact I do not own an EasyBox 804 xDSL nor any other EasyBox (because they're shit in my opinion)

#

And for the longer timeframe I answered with this:

#
WAN disconnects in April (excluding 1st of April)
2. April 21:26:33 - 21:28:00
3. April 20:47:14 - 20:49:00
6. April 02:59:53 - 03:01:40
6. April 21:54:28 - 21:55:44
6. April 22:16:10 - 22:17:57
7. April 19:36:01 - 19:39:48
8. April 21:45:39 - 21:47:27
8. April 22:08:52 - 22:10:46
9. April 15:53:06 - 15:55:33
9. April 22:54:12 - 22:55:59
12. April 20:44:37 - 20:46:09

I am loving that company πŸ™ƒ

old marlin
#

previously a unitymedia customer?

hoary dock
#

no

#

Unitymedia would be a Cable connection I have a DSL one

old marlin
#

oh

#

rip

#

true

hoary dock
#

||because vodafone cable is also dogshit||

#

^ but depending on region

old marlin
#

true

#

well now all unitymedia cable may or may not be vodafone cable

#

afaik situation is still unsure

hoary dock
#

not unitymedia

#

Kabel Deutschland

old marlin
#

so unsure that people that worked at unitymedia aren't allowed to say where they work atm

hoary dock
#

Unitymedia is a seperate one if I remember

old marlin
#

?

#

unitymedia got bought

#

well

#

kabel deutschland as well

hoary dock
#

sth was also with KabelDeutschland

old marlin
#

unitymedia got bought last year though

hoary dock
#

I mean if cable was more stable and Vodafone had the capacity to handle the speeds they're selling

#

then I would go to cable

ashen spindle
#

if cable or dsl is more stable is literally just a dice roll depending on where you are

old marlin
#

yup

hoary dock
#

with more stable I meant the speed under stress

#

e.g.

old marlin
#

cable can be stable

hoary dock
#

Saturday evening

old marlin
#

like I was a unitymedia customer for 11 years

#

most of the times it was stable

#

when it wasn't

#

it usually was a hardware problem

ashen spindle
#

7ish years for me now, issue were router once, the day they upgraded speeds for an hour, aside from that only 2 times where it had unkown issues

old marlin
#

3 different shitty rounters

#

netgear was teh first crap one

#

then we had a technicolor shit one

#

then we had a good horizon one

hoary dock
#

FritzBox is fine (telling from my experience)

old marlin
#

then we had a bad horizon one

#

and then we got a fritzbox for free

#

luckily we had the good horizon one for the longest time

#

the bad one was so bad the fan had to become REALLY audible when it wasn't doing more than just being a router

#

not even using the TV functions

#

and the wifi antenna sat right on the back

#

great idea for a TV box which will stand with the back agaisnt a wall

hoary dock
#

Vodafone offers 1000/50 to me but none of the ISPs that are delivering to my house are offering more upload than 50

old marlin
#

what do they guarantee?

hoary dock
old marlin
#

oof

hoary dock
#

I would like to go to DG

#

but they're not offering here

old marlin
#

yup

#

tehy are planning to offer it at my workplace

hoary dock
#

lucky work

old marlin
#

but they take longer for putting it underground than planned

hoary dock
#

ok well we have good connection at work too

#

Main 1Gbit and I think we are getting a backup Gbit atm

#

(symmetric Gbit btw)

old marlin
#

nice

#

same here

hoary dock
#

EUR 90 for 1000 / 500

zenith sonnet
#

@hoary dock I had the same issue with Vodafone for the longest time

#

They eventually told me the reason was a network error (Netzfehler), and a few months later it got fixed...

hoary dock
#

they blamed it on the weak thunderstorm we had on the weekend

zenith sonnet
#

I'm only getting 400/50, though

#

but at least that's what I'm getting, even during prime hours

hoary dock
#

well if that would be the case for us we may use them too

pale sigil
#

can someeone help me who use linux servers

wheat plume
#

I have Linux but no Linux servers

pale sigil
#

trying to set up ssh key only login

ashen spindle
#

I did the same, cba making it secure from just an ip or making the pw really complicated when I need to use it for sudo

hoary dock
#

write your key into authorized_keys

pale sigil
#

i did

#

but its being a dick

#

which part of the key should i write

#

Im using putty gen atm

#

RSA save as public key

#

then entering that into auth keys

hoary dock
#

in putty gen there is the copy paste field

#

you copy that and poste it into authorized_keys

#

and then in Putty

#

under connection -> ssh -> auth

#

select the private key

pale sigil
#

server keeps refusing it

hoary dock
#

systemctl restart sshd

pale sigil
#

i did that

thick elk
#

you should not need a restart for this

pale sigil
#

and disabled password

thick elk
#

Essentially your local public key needs to exist in the ssh file of the user you want to log in as on the server

#

for disabling password yes

hoary dock
#

What linux are u using?

#

and what user are you trying to do this on?

pale sigil
#

a seperate user

#

imade

#

ubuntu 19.04

thick elk
#

What I generally like to do for keyfiles is just ssh-copy-id on login though I have not used putty for this. After ssh-copy-id you can disable the password and restart the server

hoary dock
#

maybe u need to enable key auth in ssh config

thick elk
#

Just another thing the authorized_keys file on ~/.ssh on the server should not be world'readable, if you give it permission 777 for example it will fail.

pale sigil
#

perm was not the issue

#

idk what to enable in the ssh

#

there are many options

crimson wigeon
#

It should be on by default

pale sigil
#

ive always used pre setup OS via hosting sites so its not something ive had to setup before

#

i know how to use keys as i do on all my servers but idk how to enable them from scratch

thick elk
#

first you need to generate a key on your local machine, don't know how putty does that.
Then you need to copy the public key to a new line in ~/.ssh/authorized_keys on the server.
After that it should work

#

of course changing the config and restarting to disable the option to also use a password

#

but that is not needed for the passwordless login itself

hoary dock
#

do you specify the username when connecting?

#

I dont think u need to

#

but to rule out stuff
