#

Try GPU-Z

old marlin
#

I mean I see clocks in furmark as well

#

they are pretty similar

slender rain
#

The sensors tab has the field "PerfCap Reason", which should be "idle"

old marlin
#

report rate is different though

thick elk
#

so it's a laptop varient

slender rain
#

wat

old marlin
#

well

#

kinda

#

desktop chip

#

in a laptop

thick elk
#

that may explain throtling

ashen spindle
#

the alienware thing?

old marlin
#

yea alienware

#

didn't throttle before

#

they just borked some update

#

that is why I had that weird window that rports clockspeed

#

since that is the only way to set over/underclocks on gpu and cpu

#

reliably

#

I can set the perfcap reason to "min, max and avg"

#

dunno if that is a balance thing though

#

no wait

#

a dumb

#

just didn't use enough gpu-z

slender rain
#

I'm not sure what avg means for PerfCap Reason ^^

old marlin
#

nah it was just for showing the average perfcap reason

slender rain
#

The Pwr. Thrm bothers me

#

That should not happen with literally no load

old marlin
#

well the curves for bottlenecking aren't aggressive

#

so I have a thermal bottleneck with 48 degrees

#

I knwo the card can run at 2000MHz jsut fine

#

and sustain 1950 forever

slender rain
#

Looks to me like the driver is just messed up

thick elk
#

48c is pretty damn cold for the card under load

ashen spindle
#

yeah, did you try DDU?

thick elk
#

usually I'd expect somewhere between 55-75 under load

old marlin
#

not a driver problem

#

but a firmware one

thick elk
#

higher when running furmark

old marlin
#

well if it only cloks at half the rate of what it should be at

slender rain
#

Did you actually do a firmware update?

thick elk
#

so basically the power limit is way to low?

slender rain
#

Nah, it has no load

#

Even with high frequencies it still shouldn't hit the power limit

#

What does CPU-Z show during the benchmark?

#

It's not useful that it doesn't even show the estimated power consumption

old marlin
#

Same stuff

#

I'll try it later at home again

#

Am on the move rn

old marlin
#

ok currently running at 1860 MHz

#

can't wait to see that plummet suddenly

#

at 74 degrees btw

thick elk
#

that seems pretty normal.

old marlin
#

yea

thick elk
#

Just to cover some bases I assume you have the power brick(s) plugged into your laptop as with especially desktop replacements that can matter a lot for performance

old marlin
#

yea obv

#

same power brick models at home and work

old marlin
#

they only saved one previous version

#

weird

#

I know there are 4 total

ashen spindle
#

a bit surprised there is so little benchmarking for HL Alyx

#

I know vr title arent what most people test, but i would've guessed for that title there would be more results than I can find

reef patrol
#

Meh.... The card is lazy. πŸ˜„

ashen spindle
#

the good jokes will come tomorrow when intel announces the comet lake laptop chips

reef patrol
#

πŸ˜„

ashen spindle
#

the name fits bc it will be like a comet hit your laptops cpu and melted

thick elk
#

I wonder about the mounting pressure on that one

old marlin
#

about the force of a comet

ashen spindle
#

Its the first vr game where it would make sense, don’t really need benchmarks for best saber or so whee you don’t really change many settings etc.

ashen spindle
#

put it on a stick/holder etc. and move that, not put it on a person

#

could also just do less cards, I dont expect a human to test 30minutes segments with 40 gpus, but having more than 4 would be nice, especially from a site that knows how to benchmark

#

all I could find was some retarded sites having 5-8 gpus, testing on a rift with 350% super sampling???? like what

#

also, imo it's not that bad to have higher variation in vr fps tests, as frametime spikes matter much more, so not having exactly the same movements can lead to showing them more often if they do appear, which is closer to reality

plush summit
#

XD

old marlin
#

wait

#

alyx doesn't run in source 2?

#

renderer probably got big changes over the other source 2 games

#

although it still seems pretty limiting with "rooms"

ashen spindle
#

It is source 2

pale sigil
#

o.0

#

Damn

reef patrol
#

There's no way they haven't retooled that engine a ton over the years

#

Hell just look at Tiddyfall 2 and see how far they pushed it.

pale sigil
#

Apex really showed its limits

#

It works

reef patrol
#

Oh Apex is Source too? Honestly figured they went their own way engine wise πŸ˜„

pale sigil
#

Apex is literally Titanfall 2

#

LITERALLY

reef patrol
old marlin
#

apex and titanfall 2 use a different renderer

#

the normal source renderer couldn't handle them

#

btw when we are on engines, what engine does CoD use now?

#

cause they claim to have made some new one

#

but only mention how it changed graphically

#

which could all just be upgrading to dx12

old marlin
#

@granite nest monitors USUALLY don't have an audio input in form of a 3.5mm jack, but instead via HDMI or DP

#

so you can't just use a splitter for them

#

but even if

#

they aren't amazing speakers

#

and I'd just get a set of speakers isntead

granite nest
#

The monitors have 3.5mm output

old marlin
#

yea

#

but not input

granite nest
#

Ye the input will be coming via dp and hdmi from my pc and switch

old marlin
#

oh

#

so you want to use the two monitors as a mixer

#

basically

granite nest
#

I guess?

old marlin
#

you could run in feedback issues

#

so i'd recommend getting a small mixer instead

granite nest
#

Hmm ok

#

I'll look into it

#

Thanks

#

I'm not very knowledgeable on audio stuff

old marlin
#

that is mono only

#

and then you'd have a mono output

granite nest
#

My speakers and headset only have one jack for audio though

old marlin
#

yea they have a stereo jack

granite nest
#

Hm ok

#

But the stereo mixers have two output ports

old marlin
#

you can use an adapter for that

golden gulch
#

IMG MMX 30

granite nest
#

Looks good but is unfortunately not available down here

granite nest
#

All the mixers are rca GWshinodunOts

#

I need like 3 adapters lol

#

So much stuff when all i wanted was for one pair of speakers/headphones to output audio from a pc and switch at the same time

#

I still haven't even figured out what mixer i want lol

#

This any good?

#

I do want both active at the same time though GWshinodunOts

#

The main problem is that i just don't know what to get GWcentralPikaLUL

#

3-4 seems to be the minimum i can find

#

I don't mind

old marlin
#

behringer is insane in what it brought for price/performance

granite nest
#

So like the amd of audio?

old marlin
#

nah

#

even heavier

#

behringer did a huge tossup for basically every market they got in

#

offered comparable stuff for half price and less

#

footpedals got hit even harder

#

they copied a ton of them

#

all the analogue ones sound the same

#

but cost MUCH less

granite nest
#

Some of these mixers have xlr mic inputs and that just confuses me even more GWshinodunOts

#

Isn't that supposed to be what an audio interface does

#

But it has a usb interface GWanimevilSachiscared

#

So it's like, an audio interface and mixer in 1? GWllentThinkPika

#

Also what are those ports on the top

#

You'd think with how widely used 3.5mm is there'd be something for that

#

Well rca or lines

#

Doesn't make much of a difference to me

#

I still have to convert it lol

#

So does the usb interface mean i can use it as an audio interface in the case i ever buy a xlr mic

#

Probably not gonna come into play since i only voice chat once in a blue moon

#

The mic slapped on my headset works well enough for that

#

Usb just seems easier

#

Hm

#

With all this audio stuff i'm getting into i might as well go buy a dac and amp GWcentralPikaLUL

#

Well i'm already good on headphones

#

I have sennheiser game zero

#

Since i heard they were some other standard sennheiser model but with a mic slapped on

#

Heard open back headphones sound pretty nice but i have to worry about other noisy people who live with me so no dice

#

If anything i'm considering getting sony's wh1000-xm4 whenever they launch that

#

I know the sound quality on anc cans isn't good enough for some people but i really need to block outside noise

#

Dry wall, hollow core doors and hallways make for noise that pretty much echos through the entire house

old marlin
#

they are way overkill for that

granite nest
#

Also one person blasts loud karaoke sometimes

#

I have a pair of anc earbuds and my only regret is that i didn't get them sooner πŸ‘€

#

You underestimate just how loudly noise echos through this house

old marlin
#

maybe spend your 300 on dampening material then?

granite nest
#

You make noise that echoes clearly throughout the entire building just by existing in the central areas

#

I don't really want to put a bunch of foam pads everywhere GWllentThinkPika

#

Putting on some buds/cans that block noise works perfect as a solution for me

ashen spindle
#

the comet has made the impact "It does mean that in order to hit 5.3 GHz, the Core i9 is by default allowed to take 135 W across two cores, or 67.5 W per core. Even at 60W per core, you're looking at 50A of current per core... in a laptop."

granite nest
#

When intel fans are using the undervolt argument team red used to wield GWcentralPikaLUL

#

How the tables have turned

ashen spindle
#

end of 21/22 they hopefully have good stuff again

granite nest
#

Ye let's see what they can do when they finally catch up to 7nm

ashen spindle
#

they won't, they are basically skipping that node and compete vs tsmc 5nm

granite nest
#

Probably GWllentThinkPika

ashen spindle
#

the next two gens will be on 10nm but not do amazingly well, alder lake on 7nm is their hope

granite nest
#

Takes time to optimize i guess

ashen spindle
#

yes it's better, but the numbers dont actually mean anything

#

they are just marketing, 7nm process has nothing to do wiht 7 nanometers of anything

granite nest
#

Like how ddr4 ram took a while to really surpass ddr3 by a siginificant margin

#

Ddr5 i assume is going to start out the same

ashen spindle
#

they are constantly shrinking stuff which allows better designs, but ever since like 40nm or even earlier the number in the process is just a name

#

and nah ddr5 is already taping out at higher speeds than ddr4, it's on track for server stuff next year

granite nest
#

Is it significantly faster? GWllentThinkPika

ashen spindle
#

yes

granite nest
#

Huh

ashen spindle
#

and despite the numbers only being a marketing thing, we are starting to get to physical limits, which is why modern chips use stuff like 3d packing, EUV etc. to allow more progress

granite nest
#

Thinking of finally retiring my budget newbie rig from high school and putting together a monster with ryzen 4000 and rtx 3000s in november GWllentThinkPika

#

Ryzen 4000 is the last gen that'll use ddr4 right

ashen spindle
#

easily? intel has issues with going from 14 to 10 for 5 years now

#

global foundries completely dropped out of the competition for 7nm so only tsmc can produce it

fickle ore
#

Yeah its not definitely easy

#

7nm to 7nm+ required going to EUV afaik from older DUV lithography with 193nm wavelength.. To EUV 13nm wavelength

ashen spindle
#

yeah EUV is a newer, more difficult method, that resets the difficulty curve on other parts of the process so it's needed after a certain point

fickle ore
#

Yeah one EUV machine costs about 120 million dollars

ashen spindle
#

yup and the only company making them can't keep up with demand

#

dutch company btw

#

they planned to make 30 in 2019 but only managed to make 26

ashen spindle
#

all asus variants have a factory option to use Liquid metal

#

in a LAPTOP

old marlin
#

wait what

ashen spindle
#

Conductonaut Laptops rooKek

old marlin
#

watch them still overheating

ashen spindle
#

Of course

old marlin
#

I can already see the GN video with a custom waterblock on one

ashen spindle
#

140W from the cpu BTW, bye bye battery

old marlin
#

yup

#

I mean

#

asus apparently tries REALLY hard to sell it

#

but they already have the better option in their hands

#

so margins must be great on intel

ashen spindle
#

Well the laptop itself isn’t bad, mostly because the new super cards are only sold with intel cpus for now, so intel can thank Nvidia for that

#

maybe thats why the nvida naming also went to shit

#

RTX 2070 SUPER MAX-Q

old marlin
#

don't forget there is also a MAX-P model lol

ashen spindle
#

what laptop did you get? oh just the new one with

#

i9-10980HK with an RTX 2070 SUPER MAX-Q

old marlin
#

I got the new ASUS ROG STRIX TUF GAMING 12102100-319828390167827983IN9988888207770000

#

with LN2 option

ashen spindle
#

hell yeah

old marlin
#

only thermal throttles after 10 minutes of boosting to 5.5ghz

#

but it is really worth it

#

I get 20fps more than the AMD thin and light

ashen spindle
#

so it can make you ln2 icecream AND brew your coffe at the same time

old marlin
#

and can also game for a whopping 20 minutes on battery

#

I mena

#

in theory the liquid metal option is the only reasonable way to get it lol

#

since it also reduces powerdraw ever so slightly

ashen spindle
#

yeah, get that, undervolt, and if it does dry out or spills, you can easily replace it under warranty

#

which is usually a bit harder with LM

old marlin
#

and then you get a bad bin lol

ashen spindle
#

should market it as "overclocking friendly"

#

wait

old marlin
#

I mean

#

they kinda do

ashen spindle
#

you cant even undervolt them anymore

old marlin
#

wait what?

ashen spindle
#

because the security updates against plundervolt is just disabling undervolting

old marlin
#

wait

#

really?

#

oof

#

rip xps

ashen spindle
#

I think so, not sure about cml, need to check if someone tried it with the security updates

#

ah it only matters for SGX, so if you dont have that you can, but if you do have one and the fix, you cant change voltage

#

dunno if cml-h chips have that or not

old marlin
#

well

#

I doubt that they come without the fix

ashen spindle
#

yeah but sgx might just not be a thing on the chips, not like performance laptops and super secure laptops overlap a lot

old marlin
#

true

granite nest
#

is the area that says headset 3.5mm ports?

#

kinda looks like it GWllentThinkPika

#

hm

#

so it'd also send mic input from my headset to pc via usb interface?

#

also what do main mix, 2 track and line mean GWanimevilSachiscared

#

so i'd plug my pc into 2-track and switch into line?

#

i don't know what any of these buttons and knobs do

#

uh

#

in my use case, which is pc and switch

#

where would i plug what

granite nest
#

hm

#

honestly that's not too bad but it is kinda annoying

#

kinda weird to omit it but it's probably some musician technical stuff i don't understand

thick elk
#

So what do you need to use your mixer for? just input from pc and switch outputting to headphones?

granite nest
#

speakers or headphones yeah

#

i want em to play audio from both devices at the same time

#

so i don't want an audio switch

thick elk
#

ah I see

#

also both outputs at the same time or switch between the two

granite nest
#

no volume control on 2-track isn't too bad since i could just use the switch's volume button

#

at the same time

thick elk
#

Essentially you only need a 2 track stero mixer and then split the output. The one you linked here lets you setboth inputs to either output on the headphone or the speakers.
if you want to output both at the same time you should use line out and then pass the output to headphones / speakers with a simple splitter

granite nest
#

don't really need both the speakers and cans on at the same time

thick elk
#

ah I thought you meant that.

granite nest
#

only iffy thing is not having volume control for the second input but that's not too bad GWllentThinkPika

#

i'm audio illiterate GWshinodunOts

#

i don't know what's a good mixer and what's not

#

i'm fresh out of the world of simple 3.5mm being the end all

#

the only time i dealt with RCA is old CRT and plasma tvs as a kid

thick elk
#

so are the speakers and headphones both connected to the same device?

#

if so you can pretty much get away with the most simple stereo mixer

granite nest
#

the only simple mixers i can find are some unbranded ebay stuff

thick elk
#

those unbranded ones are not too bad imo

#

stereo mixers are pretty simple and as long as you use your own power supply it should be fine.

granite nest
#

hm

granite nest
#

this looks like one input to multiple speakers? GWllentThinkPika

thick elk
#

I am really derping right now

granite nest
#

i don't mind getting the 302usb if the only con is no volume control for second input GWllentThinkPika

#

i just think it's kinda weird that's not a thing

thick elk
granite nest
#

πŸ‘€

#

are those 3.5mm inputs?

#

i don't have to get a bajillion adapters?

thick elk
#

yes

granite nest
#

πŸ‘€ πŸ‘€ πŸ‘€

thick elk
#

Just doesn't include a power adapter so you need to source one with the standard pin size yourself

#

runs between 5v and 12v so chances are good you already have one laying around

granite nest
#

i uh, don't

thick elk
#

Mine came from an old external hard drive

granite nest
#

i'm sure i can get one off amazon

#

i just have puny creative pebble 2.0 v2 GWcentralPikaLUL

#

just to have audio when not wearing headphones

#

do you just not have audio without wearing cans

#

i hope they're light and comfy

thick elk
#

I don't know a lot about speakers but some edifier active speaker set should be a decent simple setup.
Active speakers for the benefit of not having to add a separate amplifier to the setup.

#

hard to say. What is best in audio is often a difficult question with no clear answer.
actives do have the drawback of producing a bit of background his but that should be rather minor. Adding a separate amplifier adds to the bulk of the setup mostly and if you don't go with some 30 euro one from ali it could eat into the budget a lot more.

Audio quality wise it seems really hard to get a good gauge on that.

granite nest
#

audio is hard compared to just buying components GWanimevilSachiscared

#

because with gpus and cpus there are objective benchmarks

thick elk
#

I have passives myself but if I where to pick again I would probably have gone for a 150-200 euro ish active set for ease as even an 80 euro one can sound fine

granite nest
#

with audio one guy might like more bass the other guy wants more mids

#

i'm pretty happy with my dinky little pebbles

#

i don't have the desk space to fit big boy speakers anyway

#

GWllentThinkPika so if i want to use this mixer with my headset and use the mic at the same time, i'll probably need an extension cord to connect the mic jack with my pc right

#

i don't have the option of stands because my desk moves GWcentralPikaLUL

thick elk
#

I'd say just get something like the Edifier R1280T and save use that for some time to get used to it.
Utlimately you will get used to the sound and it will probably fall under good enough.

#

But should you, coming from I only use headphones?
you may just end up like me just enjoying the use of headphones more

#

You can enjoy it with these just fine, sure more expensive would be better and there are a lot of things you can do with an audio setup but cost can go up pretty fast for probably not that big a gain in listening experience. At least this would be a starting point from where you can decide you need something better or not.

granite nest
#

y'know this one doesn't look half bad as well

#

i only need two inputs

#

and having more than one output would save me from unplugging and replugging every time i wanted to switch from speakers to headphones

thick elk
#

that may be a good one indeed, I use a line audio switcher I had from before I used a mixer for that.

ashen spindle
granite nest
#

welp i got it GWossuKannaSip

#

sure hope it works when it's here in a month

#

#

all the liquid metal in the world wouldn't stop the VRM from blowing up though blobhyperthinkfast

ashen spindle
#

Ehh vrm doesn’t matter

#

Little airflow is enough, they don’t perform worse under heat and resist heat much more than the cpu

thick elk
#

Well there is the thing that the video was only online yesterday

#

It's unlisted now

#

hmm they did announce it last year.

#

Still I wonder how they managed to get around the obvious drawbacks of using liquid metal in a laptop making process.

ashen spindle
#

They have a page about it I can link it in a second

thick elk
#

yea I saw

#

just a odd bit of timing and a weirdly unlisted video

ashen spindle
#

Didn’t check the video just saw the site and pictures

thick elk
ashen spindle
#

My guess is, might as well try it now on chips that almost need it, so for future use you know more and can truly sell it as a premium feature

thick elk
#

It does help with laptops but it requires some changes to the design as well. Making sure the liquid metal cannot damage other components, having a nickel plated heatsink. Costs of the metal itself have not been the only reason it has not been widely adapted.

ashen spindle
#

Oh yeah the costs for the lm have never been the reason it wasn’t used in laptops

thick elk
#

it would increase the skin temperature of the laptops as the delta between the cpu and heatsink decreases at the same cpu temperature I would expect the body of the laptop to be warmer. Unless you end up running the fan at a similar speed

#

though cooling is more efficient at higher temperatures so that may dampen things a bit

ashen spindle
#

Unless you really slow down the fans it shouldn’t really increase skin temperature I think, but that is more than I usually care about in laptops so dunno

How do I boot from CD/DVD when the keyboard doesn't work? Similarly when I've had to soft reset my PC and I have to press a key to get past the warning message about Windows didn't sutdown correctly I have to wait for the timer to finish because pressing a key doesn't work either.

try asking in #archived_helpdesk_for_keyboards @quaint pilot , people who are active there are more familiar with issues, I've heard about a fix for that but dont remember it, so ask there and someone will help you out

fml

#

new 1650 model confirmed

#

with GDDR6

ashen spindle
#

to be fair, (I usually do hate these refreshes)

#

their excuse of "the industry is moving away from gddr5" could be valid, lower production might mean higher prices or so

old marlin
#

yea

#

could reduce the buy prices of gddr6 for manufacturers

#

reduced clock speeds in comparison to 1650

#

so it could actually perform worse lol

#

1486/1665 was reduced to 1410/1590

#

you can probably get it out with an OC again

#

dunno if OC versions will be free from that

ashen spindle
#

prob 5% more in some, 5% less in others depending on what the bottleneck was

old marlin
#

yea

#

usually GPU though

#

wait what

#

mobile one has more ALUs

#

than the desktop one

#

wtf

#

same chip

#

but desktop is reduced from 1024 to 896

ashen spindle
#

huh

old marlin
#

apparntly nothing known about clocks

#

btw

reef patrol
#

The refresh happens because they're running out of DDR5.

#

Makes sense to reserve it for high end cards, and start ramping up 6 for next gen.

old marlin
#

oh really

#

CNY/COVID related?

reef patrol
#

Partially - There was a shortage before it as well.

ashen spindle
#

well that is their official statement, so at least some truth is there for sure

old marlin
#

I doubt the market switches completely to GDDR6 now

#

but the market didn't fully recover before

#

so it could clock a bit higher under laod

ashen spindle
#

well they themself probably dont have much gddr5 in stock, and if more 6 is produced it might be cheaper to make that, regardless of current situations

#

ah, does 6 need more power than 5?

old marlin
#

GDDR6 was afaik still very expensive

#

I think a bit

ashen spindle
#

if so that could be the reason they lowered clocks, since it's not using 6 or 8 pins for power delivery

old marlin
#

but it shouldn't matter a whole lot for the GPU

#

like quite a bit longer

ashen spindle
#

dont want to pull an amd and draw more power than stock pcie standard allows

old marlin
#

both are rated at 75W

#

so it is probably that

ashen spindle
#

ye bc 75w is the max for pcie slot pwer draw

old marlin
#

so it can stay without external power

ashen spindle
#

sure but that is almost the same, the x mostly changes ratings for the controller and pcb iirc

old marlin
#

is GDDR5X even an official spec?

ashen spindle
#

yes

#

but under the same jedec spec as gddr5 I think

reef patrol
#

Ugh... I hate automated systems. Waiting for a gift card mail, so I can order some new headphones

wheat plume

yeah

fallow bison

try 2

wheat plume

mmkay

fallow bison

it doesnt even power the keyboard on usb 2

fallow bison

try this

The keyboard is off also

And this update isn't progressing

fallow bison

are you on windows or linux rn

wheat plume

Linux

fallow bison

got a windows machine on hand by any chance?

wheat plume

Yup

#

Wait no I don't

fallow bison

oooo i thought you meant 'we have laptops at home'

wheat plume
#

Is it safe to stop the wootility while it's updating it? The update isn't progressing

fallow bison
#

Does the keyboard light up on a USB 3 connection?

#

yes you can do that

wheat plume
#

It did until I hit update

#

Now it's not on

fallow bison
#

Thats indeed the case, once in restore mode the LEDS turn off

wheat plume
#

O

fallow bison
#

Try restoring on a different port

wheat plume
#

Close the app and switch port?

fallow bison
#

yep

wheat plume

now the keyboard is on

fallow bison

Does it restore?

wheat plume
#

idk

#

the app still wants to update

fallow bison
#

is it blocked by a firewall?

wheat plume
#

dont have one

fallow bison
#

Im not familiar with linux at all, but one thing you could try is reinstalling the wootility

wheat plume
#

yeah imma get it from the website this time

#

I got it from the AUR

#

shoudnt have

fallow bison
#

always good practice

wheat plume
fallow bison
#

Theres also an instruction for linux installation on the wootility download page iirc

#

Yeah that one

crimson wigeon
#

Yeah do that unless you want to have to run wootility as root (sudo) every time

fallow bison
#

but first install from the website itself, to make sure versions arent out of sync

wheat plume
#

the one from the website wants to update too

#

will i try it again?

fallow bison
#

Sure

wheat plume
#

Turned the keyboard off again

fallow bison
#

are you running the Wootility with root permissions?

wheat plume
#

ill try now

fallow bison
crimson wigeon
#

Also recommend running it in a terminal anyway so you can see all error messages and such

wheat plume
#

how do I run appimage from command line?

crimson wigeon
#

Same way you run any other binary

wheat plume
#

Forgot the ./

#

Yay it updated this time

fallow bison
#

yeet

wheat plume
#

yay it detects it now

fallow bison
#

It should now also detect the board

wheat plume
#

yas!

fallow bison
#

Now make sure to add the lines from the install instructions if you dont want to start the program as root every time

wheat plume
#

i probably wont run it often, but I may as well do this

fallow bison
#

Well, gl

#

Glad you were able to fix it

there are already desktop 9900k laptops that you can overclock, so that's really nothing surprising

ashen spindle
#

holy shit im getting angry, what kind of response email is this from a support ticket "Seems so strange this defect actually since it did occur after almost 2 years and is more like a software defect than a physical one and if it was a manufacturing error it should have been detected sooner." @old marlin

#

like wtf do you want me to say and that doesnt even make sense

old marlin
#

that doesn't make any sense lol

#

switches break

#

plastic gets tired

#

if it breaks within warranty period because of either thing it is a manufacturing defect

ashen spindle
#

im just so confused, like wtf does he want me to reply

fickle ore
#

it is a question

#

answer it πŸ™‚

old marlin
#

it isn't a question though

#

the support just stated that a manufacturing defect is unlikely after 2 years

#

which is completely false

fickle ore
#

It is, he is wondering what caused the defect, meaning he is unsure, and he reached out to you, in the hopes if support could confirm it and whether he has a case for warranty

#

so a reply of what causes it and whether he is qualified for warranty

ashen spindle
#

but I already wrote in three previous emails that it just happend one day lmao

old marlin
#

well not really up to the client to figure that out

#

could be the switch being broken or the plastic of the wheel being broken bent etc

fickle ore
#

Tell him, if it's outside warranty, that all physical parts in this world break eventually due to wear or some shit

ashen spindle
#

im the one who wants a replacement, im not the support guy

fickle ore
#

oh

#

xD

ashen spindle
#

and its in warranty

old marlin
#

and if a product that dies from wear within the given warranty is a manufacturing defect

#

for reference, maxgaming support on a finalmouse

#

with it being a known error

fickle ore
#

Yes you have a case for warranty, its within period and the support is just trying to fool you

#

tell him fuck off, its a hardware defect, let me contact your superior or I'll contact my lawyer

old marlin
#

lol

#

not that harsh

#

unless you wanna make it more complicated

fickle ore
#

we,, tbh Ive had to threaten with lawear couple times, or consumer protection to get my moneyback

old marlin
#

I mean

#

I would say that I will take legal action if the support decides that my warranty claim is nor applicable when it is

#

but staying calm can usually resolve the situation easier

#

gotta think about your own mental health

#

I know why they don't wanan do anything about it

#

because it means they need to deal with finalmouse

#

while they are busy surfing or something idk

ashen spindle
#

lol fair point

fickle ore
#

Shittiest part is when you're stuck in a platform with more to lose than gain, e.g Steam.. Can't just threaten with legal action

old marlin
#

especially if you don't really own anything

ashen spindle
#

I'm just amazed at the reply, not suggestion what I could do, no question if something is this or that, just a "wonder how this can happen"

#

like I dont care, I'm writing a mail to support not to my brain to figure out whats happening

#

at least this one came after a day and not 7 days later

fickle ore
#

How can I figure my X,Y coords with a smartphone in a field?

#

Im not logged into a google account so idk if I can

ashen spindle
#

see if you can google "whats my longitude/latitude?

old marlin
#

#

you mean like GPS coordinates?

fickle ore
#

Ya

old marlin
#

or with an accelerometer?

#

uhh

fickle ore
#

GPS coords

old marlin
#

I think you can grab them out somehow

#

but dunno how

#

maybe try an openstreetmaps app or something

ashen spindle
#

jesus fucking christ

#

"But can you open it to try to fix it cause the best solution would be to send a new scroll wheel.

so you have my permission to open it."

#

a) I dont fucking want to do that,
b) it's most likely not the wheel if the clicking is messed up

fickle ore
#

loll

ashen spindle
#

like yeah let me open a mouse while using it for home office with no spare mouse around, that sounds like a good idea

#

urgh so either I try to fix it or I need to send it back and they look at it before fixing/refunding stuff

#

is that ok under warranty law?

#

@reef patrol you probably know about it

fickle ore
#

Don't open it

#

if you state you did, there goes ur warranty claim

ashen spindle
#

yeah i dont really trust this support person's "you have my permission to open it"

fickle ore
#

Yea its their out of jail card

old marlin
#

if it doesn't click but you can fell/hear the switch it is the switch

ashen spindle
#

it sounds and feels normal, if I press it gently it sometimes works sometimes not, if I press it longer/with more force it either works or clicks twice

old marlin
#

lol

#

100% dead switch

#

easily repairable but nothing that should be done by a user

ashen spindle
#

question just is, is it ok/correct for them to want it in before refunding/replacing it? if so I guess I'll have to wait for this situation with covid to change so it wont take months for shipping

old marlin
#

it is

old marlin
#

anybody has a good idea on how to store HDDs long term?

#

since law requires us to store data for 10 years

#

and backing everything up is too expensive

#

just throwing them all in a box seems like a bad idea

ashen spindle
#

big capacity ones and put each in bubblewrap, then in boxes?

old marlin
#

not even big capacity ones

#

actually mostly like 300gb drives

#

but a load of them

#

most are 10+ years old

#

we just get them now

#

bubblewrap could work though

ashen spindle
#

ah, so I guess copying them all onto bigger ones wouldnt work well?

old marlin
#

I wonder if there are like small bubblewrap bags a 3.5" drives

#

more expensive

#

like we do images either way

#

but we might still need the drive later

#

since some people that do the images aren't too reliable

#

although we also need to label them

#

mehh

fickle ore
#

minigrip bag with air sucked out

#

store in cool

old marlin
#

lol

#

I might as well just throw them in a box though

fickle ore
#

Why

old marlin
#

a minigrip bag won't do shit against bumps

fickle ore
#

Oh.. yeah.. well.. the airtight storage is more to prevent corrosion/oxidation

#

safe physical storage is another thing

old marlin
#

we get enough corrosion either way lol

#

we had servers corrode because of caustic air

fickle ore
#

Yes but if you have no hydrogen or oxygen, there is no corrosion

#

which is why you suck the air out

old marlin
#

yea

fickle ore
#

foking bacteria and anaerobic corrosion

Using a THICC 360 and a skewed 240. Not the best but it looks nice.

Might have to replace the 360 with something more efficient. Or add another 360 in the bottom.

zenith sonnet
#

THICC is good. But only when you run it loud

reef patrol
#

900RPM on all fans.

#

But I have 12 fans.

#

The THICC one uses push, pull

zenith sonnet
#

12x the fan I want will be like 400€

reef patrol

I just forked over 450€ for nine Corsair fans, pump and coolant. Today is not a fun day. But at least I got a tax return of about double that.

Any news on the NF-A12x25 Chromax yet?

reef patrol

And I need to spend it or the government takes it anyway PepeHands

zenith sonnet
#

Meanwhile I need to keep working full time :(
No stay at home for me

#

I guess that's a good thing, though

#

On one hand, I get all the usual working hours and money
On the other hand, no state-sponsored free time
There's no winning

reef patrol
zenith sonnet
#

There's a difference between living off the state because you wanna be a leech instead of pulling your weight and living off the state because it tells you to stay at home and throws some curtesy money your way

#

The latter wouldn't personally bother me

#

I built two computers for that money

#

There's probably something in there you don't need or benefit from

#

Oh

#

Well, I don't usually include peripherals

#

I spent about 2.500 of those

#

270€ for 32 GiB of B-die that runs 3666 14-13-13
Pretty happy with that deal

ashen spindle
#

well ram prices are going up now, and since q3 is zen3 teritory, we dont know what memory speeds are ideal there yet either

zenith sonnet
#

I know I'd be limited by 16 GiB, but 64 I really have no use for

#

Although Minecraft is eating 10 of that right now

ashen spindle
#

depends if you want to upgrade soon-ish afterwards, bc then you might be wasting that since ddr4 not ddr5

zenith sonnet
#

Eh, only mistake I made was going with the Aorus Master instead of the Aorus Xtreme
I planned to replace my 3700X with a '4950X' from the start

ashen spindle
#

x670 is zen3 this year, so no

zenith sonnet
#

But it'll probably be 2022 until DDR5 catches up to price/perf of DDR4

#

Been the same story every time

#

Early adopters get burned

ashen spindle
#

doesnt matter since you dont have a choice lmao

#

there wont be a cpu that supports both

zenith sonnet
#

And I fully expect 50-100% faster kits 1-2 years after the first boards and kits are on the market

#

So, I went with AM4 on purpose

ashen spindle
#

if it's a situation like zen2 memory/if-clock, it doesnt matter that you dont get higher speeds on release

zenith sonnet
#

Until this rig is dated, AM5 boards, memory, etc, will be mature

#

Production ramped up

#

Etc

#

Maybe around the time Zen 5 releases?

#

Or maybe intel will have woken up again by then

#

Or ARM will eclipse

ashen spindle
#

we already know zen 4 uses ddr5, it will be mature by then already

zenith sonnet
#

Zen 4 is first gen DDR5, it won't be mature

ashen spindle
#

ddr5 was already working in november 2018

#

they are already working on ddr5-6400mhz production

zenith sonnet
#

When was DDR4 working?

ashen spindle
#

idk

#

but 5 is already shipped to chip makers, and slated for mass production by both sk hynix and samsung, think micron too recently

zenith sonnet
#

It seems to be about a year earlier than DDR4 was when CPUs supported it

#

So, that's a good thing

#

Seems like AMD/intel chose to let it mature a bit more before hopping on it

ashen spindle
#

... amd is literally making the first possible chip the can with ddr5

#

it wasn't availible in time for zen3 and it will be on zen 4

zenith sonnet
#

Anyway, getting back to the topic at hand
I'd be highly surprised if there were significantly better kits for Ryzen 4000 at a comparable price than what I already got
If X670 will be interesting? I think it's mostly more maturity for the IO and lower power draw of the chipset

reef patrol
#

πŸ‘€

zenith sonnet
#

$379.99 X570 ROG Crosshair VIII Hero
I'd say go with the Aorus Master/Xtreme, but either is fine, really. Aorus is a bit better with memory, Crosshair with CPU OC
$399.99 AMD Ryzen 9 3900X
Q3 is right in time for Ryzen 4000
Kingston SKC2000M8
Adata XPG 8200 series

Very similar to my build overall

#

Oh, and look into Trident Z Neo memory, the F4-3600C16D-16GTZN is a better kit for the same money

#

And you need A LOT more fittings

reef patrol
#

Two fittings per component minimum. And don't forget some Rotary for bends.

#

The O11 is plenty big. Even non XL oo

zenith sonnet
#

You'll need 11 STC fitting incl. drain, plus whatever angled fittings you need

reef patrol
#

So many USB ports lul

reef patrol
#

Not hard to do. One Corsair mouse and one Corsair Headset eats up four ports.

#

2 for dongles, to for charging cables πŸ˜„

old marlin
#

do they not use extenders?

#

which you plug on the extenders?

reef patrol
#

...extenders?

old marlin
#

where you can plug your receiver in on one end

#

and when the mouse needs to charge you remove it from the cable and plug it into your mouse

#

that seems like a cheap process KEKW

reef patrol

That Logitech thing makes no sense. What? I need a practical example πŸ˜„

old marlin

saves a usb port

reef patrol
#

I'm not going to reach around back of my PC to do that once a day.

old marlin
#

and putting the receiver close to the mouse makes the connection more reliable

reef patrol
#

I definitely wouldn't mind an official hub of sorts though.

#

Central charger and dongle hub...or hell how about just making a single dongle πŸ˜„

old marlin
#

dunno if any of the "gaming" brands have a usb hub

wdym with "single dongle"?

you mean for all devices?

reef patrol

I have one for my mouse, and one for my headphones...from the same manufacturer.

old marlin

#

unfortunatley forcing usb 3 isn't an option yet

for companies like logitech especially

reef patrol
#

For GAMERS? It definitely is.

old marlin

weeeeell

#

they would have a ton of people thinking it broke because it didn't work on USB 2

reef patrol
#

Then you make it obvious on the package πŸ˜„

old marlin

and people would be majorly upset

#

yea

#

people are stupid

reef patrol
#

It's not like USB3 hasn't been color coded for ages.

old marlin
#

ik

#

logitech sells a shitton

reef patrol
#

Again though - Very hard to track down USB2 PCs at this point.

old marlin
#

well

#

if you bought a retail motherboard right now

#

a lot of people have older stuff

reef patrol
#

We're talking 10 year old stuff.

old marlin
#

yea ik

#

well

#

a lot of people have desktops like 3+ years old

reef patrol
#

I haven't seen a USB2 port in the wild for years.

old marlin
#

which aren't 100% usb 3

reef patrol
#

Aside from OFFICE PCs which are moot when it comes to gaming specific products.

old marlin
#

yea

#

like 2015 stuff

#

is still not 100% usb3

reef patrol
#

Let me repeat myself - I have - Not seen - A USB 2 port. At all πŸ˜„

old marlin
#

well

#

that might be the case for you

reef patrol
#

I have low end 3000 series Intel boards on my shelf that don't even have USB2 on the back. Only as headers.

old marlin
#

not a significant part of the market

#

wtf

#

lol

reef patrol
spiral belfry
#

@sick creek I have looked into it, but that was after I made the project XD

sick creek
#

ah

#

well, it probably wouldnt be too difficult to re-create

#

there's also something called livewire which allows you to write PHP code that then gets translated into JS to add dynamic functionality

spiral belfry
#

True, but I will do that at a later date (when I finish with uni)

sick creek
#

it's a laravel package

spiral belfry
#

It is tempted

sick creek
#

anyway the reason i brought it up is cause i noticed the login thing is "being worked on"

#

haha

#

and that's basically something that comes built-in with laravel

#

you run php artisan make:auth and it pre-populates the basics of an auth system

#

basically just have to skin it

spiral belfry
#

oh it works

#

just because GDPR and wooting, we just dont want to deal with that stuff yet

sick creek
#

do you really have to obey GDPR if you're just taking email/password?

spiral belfry
#

Yeah

#

it is still data

sick creek
#

that's so lulzy

spiral belfry
#

and the profiles you then post

sick creek
#

what a waste of fucking time

spiral belfry
#

Yeah

#

you should try make a forum software....

#

it is a headache

sick creek
#

no thanks, discourse already exists

spiral belfry
#

I honestly hate GDPR from a developer area

sick creek
#

LMAO

#

well, i guess nobody then

reef patrol
#

do you really have to obey GDPR if you're just taking email/password?
Yes - An Email is personal information.

spiral belfry
#

πŸ˜‚

#

@sick creek I personally do not like the look or function of discourse

sick creek
#

an email is actually not personal information by itself

spiral belfry
#

oh it is

#

it is classed as "identifiable data"

sick creek
#

it's not. it's like a physical address. means nothing without the name attached

spiral belfry
#

the old people in the EU decided this shit

sick creek
#

well fuck the old people

#

lmao

pale sigil
#

And I'm happy the old people did it

spiral belfry
#

This is why i personally hate EU XD

pale sigil
#

We should know who has what data on us

sick creek
#

um

#

you're missing the point just like they did

ashen spindle
sick creek
#

yes you should know who has data on you, but if you SIGNED UP for a service voluntarily... what are you complaining about

pale sigil
#

Prob

#

I wanna know what data they have on me

sick creek
#

dont anyone tell @ashen spindle about phone books

pale sigil
#

Specificially

spiral belfry
#

Shamefully, that isnt how it works

#

People got annoyed that companies sold data XD

#

even though, they signed up to it and it was in their terms

sick creek
#

@pale sigil yeah its not so you can find out exactly what they have on you

pale sigil
#

You can request your data, if they are hiding shit they get fined

sick creek
#

for my application (and many others), that would mean exposing trade secrets

spiral belfry
#

exactly

#

welcome to the EU

sick creek
#

well i dont live there

spiral belfry
#

if your application works in the EU, you have to comply

sick creek
#

nor will my app be used there

pale sigil
#

Give me an example

#

I'm actually curious

sick creek
#

the way you associate data in a complex application can be constituted as a trade secret

#

which is how it works for me

spiral belfry
#

Shamefully, completely wrong in EU

#

and that can give you a fine

sick creek
#

good to know

#

EU is banned

spiral belfry
#

again

if your application works in the EU, you have to comply
@spiral belfry

#

πŸ˜‚ got to love GEO locking

pale sigil
#

Then develop around it

sick creek
#

well its not something anyone can just sign up for anyway

pale sigil
#

As always a wrench is always thrown

spiral belfry
#

but here is the kicker for you @sick creek if VPNs exist, you also still have to comply

pale sigil
#

People will learn to adapt

sick creek
#

lol "develop around it" ok bud

#

you're not understanding

spiral belfry
#

if someone in EU uses a VPN to use the application, that application works in the EU, so you still have to comply

pale sigil
#

Clearly I'm not

#

I'm just saying

sick creek
#

as it handles health data, my org will literally be in control of who signs up
