vast moss
#

Teracube is a somewhat new mid-budget phone with specs that I think?? are comparable to the Moto G7's but is meant to get three or four years of support. I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab A 6 7" that is crap in pretty much every way imaginable for an Android device, and I think I need something better.
On one hand, Teracube was built with sustainability in mind, which is cool, and it has flat-rate repair ($39 for everything) and somewhat long support (3 years of updates), but on the other, the Moto G7 is more well-known and has a version of LineageOS available for it in case I get sick of Google and want to get an un-Googled Android.

vast moss
#

wha?

#

Teracube is online-only ordering. What's Android One?

wheat plume
#

Teracube is online-only. What's Android One?
@vast moss Android One is pure android for phones other than Google phones

vast moss
#

Any recommendations within the budget area of the G7 and Teracube (~$250)?

wheat plume
#

Check out Xiaomi phones

#

they are really cheap and very nice for the money and if you do not like MIUI you can install Iineage or any other custom rom without breaking the warranty

#

Xiaomi allow the bootloader to be unlocked using their software and they still support the phone if you need help

vast moss
#

I'm looking at the Lineage downloads and the Xiaomi website, and at first glance, it seems like there is no phone listed in both the Xiaomi and Lineage web sites, as though Xiaomi stopped supporting those phones listed on Lineage

wheat plume
#

Xiaomi phones have great support for custom roms

#

my phone has basically every android 10 rom available for it

vast moss
#

no card slot
not sure what I think about this

#

@vast moss what you mean lineageOS doesnt have any rom for Xiaomi?
They do, but none of the phones that are also in Xiaomi's product list

wheat plume
#

Yeah, the xiaomi website only shows phone that they want people to buy

vast moss
wheat plume
#

Buy from banggood or amazon

vast moss
#

also, could I even install Lineage on the Mi Mix 3 if there's no dedicated build?

wheat plume
#

wait...the Alpha is on there? :O I thought it was just a concept phone, they selling it now?

#

also, could I even install Lineage on the Mi Mix 3 if there's no dedicated build?
@vast moss you could take your chancewith a GSI build

vast moss
#

I don't think you can buy from the Xiaomi website, so it might just be a pre-release product page

#

GSI?

wheat plume
#

Generic System Image

vast moss
#

and if that fails?

wheat plume
#

its what you use if you really want a ROM but there isnt a build made for your specific device

#

and if that fails?
@vast moss try another rom! there are many out there

vast moss
#

I wonder if /e/ has a build. I'm also interested in trying them out

wheat plume
#

the redmi note 7, the mix 2S, the note 8
they are all really popular for custom roms

#

/e/ ?

#

what

vast moss
#

another Android-based OS

wheat plume
#

ah

#

you could get a second hand pixel 3 and put graphene on it if you want

vast moss
#

hmm

wheat plume
#

Graphene is a privacy focused OS

vast moss
#

So let's see, current recs are Xiaomi Mi Mix 3, Redmi Note 7, Mix 2S, Note 8; Google Pixel 3?

wheat plume
#

yup, those are nice options

keep in mind, the Mix 3 has the slider design to use the front camera and on MIUI, you can configure the sound and action that happens when you slide down the screen but on custom roms you cannot

vast moss
#

are these all Xiaomi products? and noted, thanks

wheat plume
#

they are

vast moss
#

also added Pixel 3 into the list

wheat plume
#

Honestly, look through all of xiaomi's phones and see what one you like the best

try to avoid ones with a mediatek processor, stick to snapdragon for best custom rom support and battery life

vast moss
#

I see

wheat plume
#

luckily there arent a lt of those

vast moss
#

well, that yeets the Teracube out of my option list

wheat plume
#

I need to see what teracube is about ahaha

vast moss
wheat plume
#

thats a freakin bold ass claim right on the home page

vast moss

vast moss

I "like" that the i doesn't look right in that font

thick elk
#

Also uses a mediatek btw

wheat plume
#

Yeha I just saw that -.-

vast moss
#

that's why I said it yeeted it out of my option list

wheat plume
#

oof

vast moss
#

I like the idea behind the Teracube, and some of the features are nice, but it would be good to use Lineage or /e/ or something (Lana mentioned Graphene; might check that out too)

wheat plume
#

Graphene is only for pixel phones

vast moss
#

ahh

#

I'd have to check out the Pixel 3 specs and see if they are in that same price/feature ballpark

wheat plume
#

Pixel 3A is hella worth the price for the camera and pure android points alone

vast moss
#

or highly unaffordable like the fairphone
Teracube is only $250...

wheat plume
#

ooh

vast moss
#

is it possible to dual-boot between pure Android and a custom ROM on any of the aforementioned devices? (is it even necessary?)

thick elk
#

I never did it but I know it was at least possible in the past

#

on my samsung note 3

wheat plume
#

O.o

#

im not sure :PP

thick elk
#

It would certainly cut into your availible storage space

vast moss
#

I've not run a device with more than 16GB storage so far

wheat plume
#

Btw, if you do choose to use Xiaomi phones, you will need to make a mi account to use the unlock tool.
Also Orangefox recovery is better to use on Xiaomi phones than TWRP is.
You can install Orangefox using TWRP though so install that first

#

I've not run a device with more than 16GB storage so far
@vast moss ;-;

vast moss
#

yeah, really sucks because storage is always an issue

#

for reference, my Tab A is 8GB, half of which is already taken up by Android and Samsung bloatware

wheat plume
#

I really hate Samsung so badly

a question about getting Android apps: if I have a custom ROM, does the storefront they use go off of Google Play? probably dumb question tbh

$250 for a 28nm in 2020 :/
28nm? and is that good or bad?

wheat plume
#

a question about getting Android apps: if I have a custom ROM, does the storefront they use go off of Google Play? probably dumb question tbh
@vast moss they all use play store

thick elk
#

250 is pretty expensive for the hardware

vast moss
#

what even is meant by a 28nm? and is qlum still talking about the Teracube?

#

they all use play store
comprehensible

#

ah. Well, the Teracube is apparently a mid-budget phone

wheat plume
#

idk how good that cpu is

#

probably not worth the price

vast moss
#

idk how good that cpu is
it says octa-core 2.0GHz, but even then, are there better ones out there for a similar price?

wheat plume
#

Snapdragon better :PP

vast moss
#

seeing that it's probably going to be a secondary device, I don't want to spend too much on one. The $250 budget seems about where I want to go for this, unless I can put out a bit more for a better price/feature device

wheat plume
#

250 might get you a mix 2S now a days, thats got a snapdragon 845 + 6gb ram + 64GB storage
The 848 is the flagship processor from 2018/2019

vast moss
#

I can't find the Mix 2S on Amazon; maybe Ebay?

wheat plume
#

I got mine from my carrier shop but my previous two phones I got from banggood website

#

humidity sensor??? what?

vast moss
#

Given that I would like to use mine probably not actually as a phone, I wouldn't mind--heck, would probably prefer--getting an unlocked one

wheat plume
#

any phone you buy online will be unlocked unless it says otherwise or you are buying it from a carrier

#

ooohh, interesting

#

Antutu3dBench takes so long to run

vast moss
#

I found an Ebay listing for a used Mi Mix 2S with 128GB for $220; do I take it?

wheat plume
#

oo, used. idk the battery life may be worse but since its a secodary device I assume you will always have it near a charger?

vast moss
#

likely

wheat plume
#

Id take it then assuming nothing is wrong with it hardware wise

#

even mine is dipping in battery life

#

I had mine since january last year

vast moss
#

I don't suppose I could get the battery replaced if need be?

wheat plume
#

woah the bottom of that thing is scuffed up a lot

vast moss
#

and I know they said there was a bit of cosmetic damage, including a dented corner and slightly scratched screen

#

if you have an ifixit kit, yea
I don't, but I know someone who does

wheat plume
#

O.o dafuq

vast moss
#

wow

wheat plume
#

this seller is also giving a glass protector and back cover

vast moss
#

the wording is a bit hard to follow; is that what it is? to me it looks like a new screen (probably for replacing the current one) and a film for the back, may be part of the original packaging

wheat plume
#

front tempered glass is usually a glass screen protector

#

i doubt they actually replaced the screen glass itself

vast moss
#

I see

wheat plume
#

unless they did

#

who am I to judge their ability in phone repair

vast moss
#

I don't think they did themselves, but it might be that it's so the customer can do it

#

if your someone also has the microwaveable heat bag thingy you could probably save some money buying a phone with a broken screen
the what?

#

ah, interesting

#

Bring your own screen and sure

#

so, should I, or does anyone else have a rec with similar price/feature ratio?

wheat plume
#

my previous phone got shattered and nearly totally brokem by my mom who is currently using it

vast moss
#

wow

wheat plume
#

on the top corner you can see inside the damn phone

vast moss
#

wow

#

tfw Xiaomi doesn't have an official storefront

wheat plume
#

They have stores in some locations

#

but yeah, they save money by going through amazon and other online stores

vast moss
#

I go to uni in a city in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan (middle of pretty much nowhere), and I couldn't find the Mix 2S on Amazon

wheat plume

They have a shop in london in a shopping mall and I reallllyyyyy wanna go

wheat plume

vast moss

wheat plume

then you good to go

Is 265 a good price for 128 GB and possibly new?

wheat plume

vast moss

It doesn't specify immediately, I'll have to prowl the product page

#

And is there a difference between EU/Global and US version?

crimson wigeon

Yes, 'murica uses different frequencies compared to rest of world so if you live there you should take the 'MURICA variant

wheat plume

I think the network bands, the global might be best unless you get a USA one

vast moss
#

unless you recommend something else

#

still not a great one?

wheat plume
#

why are you interested in Lineage?

vast moss
#

Because I want to try not-Google Android

wheat plume
#

aosp?

vast moss
#

?

wheat plume
#

Android Open Source Project

#

Core android is open source and people build roms based on that without google apps

vast moss
#

hm

wheat plume
#

If you like that idea, you can try out havocOS
or ArrowOS

both of those do not come with google apps and they offer features that android normally does not have also

vast moss
#

Might have to check those out

wheat plume
#

ofc you can install google apps on them

#

because its android after all

vast moss
#

What I'm mainly looking for is an Android device that is newer (as in, still supported), has decent features and specs, and doesn't break the bank

wheat plume
#

but you want not google-ified android

vast moss
#

would be nice to be able to go to one of those if I wanted to get away from Google, so definitely worth taking into consideration

#

got dang, I feel like I'm just being picky by now :/

wheat plume
#

you still have the same setup process as android but you can avoid logging into google account

#

but then you cant use the play store without loggin into the acount

vast moss
#

hm, figured so

wheat plume
#

even if you choose iPhone you still have google apps, so many iphone users use gmail and google maps and google chrome :')) the irony is amazing when they say iPhone is more private despite using mostly google apps

vast moss
#

I don't use many Google apps, only Gmail and Youtube

wheat plume
#

thats fair

vast moss
#

and I'm trying to get away from Gmail. I also use ProtonMail for personal stuff, but uni requires Google

#

My family's looking into iPhone upgrades so hopefully I get a newer iPhone soon as my daily driver, but I also have used Android on the side and would like to continue to do so. It's just that I'd like to look into also using a device that supports a less-Google Android

#

it's a bit odd, I know

wheat plume
#

get a pinephone :DD

#

it runs Linux! on a phone!

#

no google whatsoever

vast moss
#

A pinephone?

#

And I don’t need (or tbh want) to be entirely Google-less (I have some Play Store things that I have put money into) but Linux on a phone seems fun too, will have to look into it

wheat plume
#

if you want as open source as you can get while still having access to the play store to get apps then a rom without gapps included is the best way to go

#

Lineage, Arrow Vanilla, havoc OS, crDriod, i think AOSIP also

vast moss
#

I see. Kinda what I thought. I think that by now it’s gotten so complicated I may need to start over with my search and find a good budget phone and rom to go with. But for now, I have something to do, so maybe later if you’re still up you can give me recs, or we can recap our current recs and see what would work best

#

It was... Pixel 3a, Redmi Note 8 or 7, and Mi Mix 3 or 2S

wheat plume
#

budget phone probably the redmi note 8 or 7

vast moss
#

Budget but powerful enough that I can actually use it for things

wheat plume
#

yeah of course, the 636 is noiceeeee

#

handled every game I tried except pubg, which dropped down to medium graphics and stuttered a bit

pale sigil
vast moss
#

I don’t play pubg soooo

#

Wow

wheat plume
#

wat

vast moss
#

Do you know of any custom ROMs that can work on a Redmi Note 7 or 8?

wheat plume
#

I get all my custom rom news from telegram, there is an XDA group channel for my phone and they keep a record of all custom roms + kernels for it in the notes

vast moss
#

I’d probably have to check price tho just to see what it’d cost

wheat plume
#

so I suggest getting telegram and finding a channel for your phone you wanna look into

vast moss
#

I have Telegram

wheat plume
#

ah nice

vast moss
#

I don’t think I quite comprehend

wheat plume
#

these are notes in the channel. you can use the bot to get one of them and get the links for the latest version of the note you asked for

vast moss
#

Ah

wheat plume
#

like if I did #arrowos it would give me the download link + changelog for the latest version

ashen spindle
#

yea im just gonna stick to using my phone as a phone and not linux 2 go

wheat plume

vast moss

probably same, but the idea’s cool

#

wheat plume
#

Ubuntu Touch is still alive :DD

#

UBports are working on it still

vast moss
#

But no phones sold afaik

wheat plume
#

you can get the pinephone then get the system image and install it that way

vast moss
#

Perhaps. The one I saw tho has some oof specs

wheat plume
#

afaik you cant make phone calls yet on ubuntu touch? 🤔 idk thouhg

vast moss

There is chrome OS probably growing from it's education niche. For coding and in enterprise linux does have some great benefit's so it may grow there but for the average consumer indeed if ever it's not going to be a thing fast.
Unless Windows gets ported to the linux kernel

#

Also china may just outright ban windows at some point

#

giving linux a technical victory

cedar glen
#

meh china wants full control, so they wouldn't allow linux per se if they were going to ban windows, at best they'd make some CCCP distro which is close sourced and on lockdown in that case

I know that some Linux distro makers (e.g. Canonical, the org behind Ubuntu) create distros meant for Chinese users (e.g. Ubuntu Kylin)

😄

#

The intro.

wheat plume
#

When you want to use headphones so you plug them in, hit play and they dont fucking work because windows is like "no, not today"

#

that is my life EVERYTIME I install windows on this laptop

#

even when I got this laptop out of the box it had this issue

#

Linux works fine, even Pop OS gives me a little thing to choose if I wanna send output to headphones are continue using the laptop speakers

#

windows just cannot do it

old marlin
#

it can though

#

you just have to set it up correctly

#

and you can make similar arguments about linux as well

cedar glen
#

you can install something like realtek audio or whatever your drivers are

#

and it'll enable the popup

old marlin
#

I don't even wanna know how linux will handle audio drivers for my laptop

#

my laptop has 2 jacks

wheat plume
#

two??

#

wat

#

wait, are you sure one of them isnt a mic input?

old marlin
#

but one can switch between every possible stereo output

#

so mics and headphones/speakers

#

and one can be anything basically

#

headset combo, mic, headphones

#

basically anything audio related with a 3.5mm jack

wheat plume
#

wow

old marlin
#

too bad sound quality sucks

wheat plume
reef patrol
#

Yeah the dynamic ports are pretty common these days. Realtek chips with TERRIBLE software. But it works 😄

old marlin
#

yea

#

terrible sound though

#

and crackling

#

also didn't manage to automatically detect my mic in the mic port

wheat plume
#

:/

#

only solution rn is to reboot

old marlin
#

you can change it in the sound manager

#

unfortunatley win 10 tries to keep that out of reach

wheat plume
#

I uninstalled all the audio drivers one time

#

it worked

#

but then after turning on my computer they all came back

#

the only way to remove this is to get rid of the drivers and they just come back after reboot

old marlin
#

well because windows realizes it doesn't come with drivers

#

for end users it is great

#

jsut don't try to get as little software as possible

#

if it comes back then you basically have to live with it

wheat plume
#

I just got the new MIUI animations

pale sigil
#

@wheat plume download the drivers you want, remove ones you don't, reboot without Internet and install the ones you want

#

And crash every 5 min

thick elk
#

Oh fuck my phone's screen just died for 50%.
The glass and touch screen are still in tact just the amoled panel got killed.

#

I had it in a sleeve and held it upside down accidentally

#

it fell on the edge killing the display without damaging the rest

#

Of course I can replace the screen but I kind of need a phone so I guess I'll have to buy a new one

#

Not for the rarer models

#

it's getting the parts that is the big factor

#

true enough, I can still blindly use it

pale sigil
#

Personally

thick elk
#

I will probably just get a new one and keep the old one as an actual proper backup

pale sigil
#

I have spare phones and would prob just buy a £10 phone if needed

#

While waiting for a repair

thick elk
#

I can use some ancient thing I have laying around as well but I really don't enjoy a long wait.
A bigger factor is I get some funds from work to spend on mostly electronics so overspending there really is not a big deal

fair gull
#

finally setup a dyndns with netcup

really nice that they have a dns api without ratelimits

thick elk

pale sigil

zenith mirage
#

I bought a new battery for my old phone and it revived the thing. My mates are always confused why I kept it, but it seemed a shame to chuck it or sell it for a few quid

wheat plume
#

so it works now but as soon as I run any windows updates itll install the realtek drivers and that stupid wavvaudio app

#

and break it all again

#

it doesnt open

it just makes the cursor show the loading animation for a minute then stops

nothing shows up

no, it isnt hardware related

everything is fine on Linux and even more fine on Pop OS

I mean... that doesn't mean you don't have a hardware issue 😄

#

Just that Linux doesn't care.

wheat plume

If only the browser choice thing was kept mandatory - And MS gets their ass handed for demanding an MS account.

So tired of MS constantly trying to pull new shit.

fair gull

windows defender existed since winxp and came bundled since vista

ashen spindle

Not forcing Media player and shit on people.

fair gull

ik that

i have literally not seen any of the n versions in big "super markets"

And MS got lazy with implementation

ashen spindle

I got it as win7 pro n back during uni bc I didnt notice it lmao

You couldn't not have IE though.

#

They never tried to. They wanted to give users an informed option, instead of thinking "Oh internet is that blue E icon"

fair gull

would be kinda shit to not be able to download anything aswell

so they have to bundle some form of browser

reef patrol

But only because Chrome was bundled with everything under the earth.

Honestly Windows should just have a first time option that actually gave you meaningful things to setup. Not "Do you want durr personalized ads?" "Do you want to enable GPS on your... desktop PC. so you can google maps?"

"What media player do you want?"
"What browser do you want?"
"Do you want a different AV suite?"

So annoying 😄

ashen spindle

yeah the latest windows version changed it so you don't need that anymore I thought?

reef patrol

Not here.

No more weird issues there.

I highly doubt they differ

it doesnn't matter

u literally select the language on boot

pale sigil

as long as your editing tools

first boot after install u select system language and keyboard layout

it virtually doesnt matter what iso u use

No

#

Well

zenith sonnet

Uh, the installer usually asks me language and keyboard, first thing

pale sigil
#

Yes

it does

kinda

fair gull

thats for the installer

pale sigil
#

Region defines say word itll use US

zenith sonnet

Hell, the Microsoft USB creation tool already asks me

fair gull

not the win10 language

Uhh... You don't pick language until pretty late in the process. Probably not great to see english install text, if you don't read it 😄

weird thing i had which a lot of people di

fair gull

use the danish iso

#

ah wait no

#

danish iso still downloading

reef patrol
fair gull
#

the only thing always bound to be the same as the original iso is the boot text

like "preparing devices"

actually anything pre winlogon

i use explorer

pale sigil
#

explorer

fair gull

explorer works just fine

fair gull

pale sigil

the only issue i had with explorer got fixed when i updated to 1909

so /shrug

like this?

#

k imma stay with explorer then

#

thats literally just 2 explorer windows side by side btw

#

so

#

basically like explorer.exe just looking like its ripped straight from win98

#

i will stay by my previous statement then

#

i use opus a lot

#

so

#

DOpus

#

not Opus

#

that looks even worse than total commander

#

ngl

#

why not use powershell

#

white and black?

#

PS is white on blue

well

red errors and such

but

who uses cmd in this day and age

this is like a blast from win7

#

no ps

#

shitty explorer

#

is this why u cling to ur tools?

pale sigil

cmd is just quick to use

fair gull

i mean cmd wont ever be removed

so

¯_(ツ)_/¯

what

how do these relate to total commander and the other one

well except yt-dl having memory leaks with large ass videos

@reef patrol how the fuck can anyone read this language you call danish

zenith sonnet

I know Cortana can't

fair gull

The problem is not the spying itself but they want to link the devices together get even more information

reef patrol
#

It's also a bit of an issue if you ever go offline.

#

Windows can throw a fit and refuse to accept your ACTUAL password to log in, unless you put it on wifi

#

Why yes - 1234 IS your chosen PIN. But we're unsure if that's still accurate, so please log in with your email and actual password. Oh you just want to use the PC? Sorry

old marlin
#

yea exactly

reef patrol
#

I hope Microsoft faces massive backlash, now that they're making it more global.

thick elk
#

I mean the problem for microsoft with having local accounts that are not synced

reef patrol
#

My Windows based PC's account is locally stored. Why should an online cloud service dictate how I use it?

If I choose to go online, I'll be logged in - It shouldn't be part of the base experience/limitation itself.

#

That's like not letting you use your smartphone, because there's no reception.

thick elk
#

From what I know the online accounts are actually just a microsoft account linked to a local account. You can login just fine if you are offline.

reef patrol
#

When it works? Yes.

#

That is rarely the case though.

#

I have had to call up so many customers asking for their email and password, because the PIN isn't accepted any longer.

thick elk
#

I remember in the windows 8 days changing your password in your microsoft account did not propogate onto the local accounts

#

Nowadays I just use a local account

#

Just a bit of nag in the very rare case I need to use the store but otherwise fine.
I mostly just use my windows install for gaming at home anyway so no biggy

#

as for a simple sudo password, I am sort of guilty of that as well or rather I use an ancient password it's still 16 random lowercase letters / numbers and one captilized letter at some random spot

#

I should memorize a new one

#

Changing passwords every few months is terible security practice

old marlin
#

I use keepass privately

reef patrol
#

Those password schemes do more harm than good. Because people WILL be writing those down on postits or use password tools 😄

old marlin
#

password for windows and that is quite complex

#

although I'd love a better one

thick elk
#

I use keepass as well. No way am I going to do unique passwords any other way

old marlin
#

password managers atm are not that good

thick elk
#

they define the password for you? if not you can just use a small mutation on an existing password.

old marlin
#

yea

#

my school is especially bad

#

required password length depends on what variations of characters you use

thick elk
#

I don't know what too similar would be but it may be possible to game their system

old marlin
#

yea

#

could be

thick elk
#

At work we don't have strict requirements or good security in general. I do however require everyone to use at least 14 characters in their lastpass account.
Sure terrible passwords will be used but at least they are slightly longer

old marlin
#

@thick elk we have it worse

#

let's just say it is a good thing that the old password manager we have at work from an external isn't used that much

#

lol

thick elk
#

My strategy for learning a new password is as follows: create a new keypass db protected with the old password storing the new one.
Practice the new password frequently and delete the old database when I know the password well enough.

#

I also don't mix local passwords with online services

zenith sonnet
#

My strategy for learning new ones is to use them twice...

#

As long as I use them regularly, that works for me

#

Problems are those I only need every few months

thick elk
#

sure but getting long random keys memorized takes quite a bit of effort. This is moslty talking about os logins / crypto unlocks. As online services are all stored in keepass

old marlin
#

nah

#

takes me like 3 days to learn them

#

and I want a server hosted solution ideally

#

also self hosted

thick elk
#

Yea but comparing that Xeanoa I would call that quite a bit of effort

old marlin
#

bitwarden would be the best on the market atm

#

but even that has some problems

#

especially the subscription service aspect

thick elk
#

I am fine with keypass + mailing my databases around. As for browser integration the Kee addon is quite good.

old marlin
#

I have no big problem with mailing it around/having it backed up in our cloud

#

but that only works for personal use

#

for work we need something that can easily be used as a team

thick elk
#

at work we use lastpass but yea it's kind of shit

old marlin
#

without needing to constantly replace a file

#

I wouldn't be able to pitch that tbh

#

because it is hosted on external servers

thick elk
#

I thought you where talking about personal use but yea work has different needs

old marlin
#

my boss extremely doubts anything not hosted yourself

#

imo lastpass is borderline useless for personal use lol

#

since keepass exists

zenith sonnet
#

If people put as much effort into learning their passwords than they do in avoiding to learn them... :p

Not having to change passwords every few months might help there, Xea 😄

I'm kinda annoyed that I need to go to my bank to change my online banking password

My bank is really great about that one. You have to change the password yearly so, out of nowhere you get the prompt you have to change your password now. No warning beforehand or anything.

We use a nationalized 2 factor system here in Denmark. You log in with your social security no. and a password, or a username and password.

And then the 2 factor either has you type in a one time password from a cardboard paper, or a mobile app.

This covers banks, any kind of digital signature from the state and companies as well as our "public mailbox", which is basically an email for anything that doesn't need to be sent in paper. Stuff from doctors, schools, state, banks and whoever else has signed up.

#

I use Lastpass. It is such a godsend on PC for random forums.

#

And since practically everything "important" is covered by 2 factor, I'm not really at risk. It just lets me use insane one-time passwords for anything, so random haxxor can't reuse it 😄

As for doing questions and answers more elegently you can create a group and within the group (folder) have an entry for the password, and one for the secret questions.
You can use a lot of subfolders in keepass and the way the interface is organized it doesn't clutter too much.
Personally I find putting it in notes not that bad.

I should find an alternative to lastpass that handles phones for free

#

not interested in paying for premium when it'd just give me android sync, considering I'd use that once in a blue moon

#

well it's still useful that one time

#

I usually end up connecting to the lastpass vault via web browser when that happens

#

for example, needing to connect to some admin site while I'm dealing with bureaucracy and paper pushing

that was random, Windows decided it was smart to disable DHCP resulting in no working network connection.

I removed windows dns for my connection and discord and a few other sites refused to connect without me enabled and disabling both ethernet and wifi again.
