What about hard pagefaults?

#

Looks good?

fickle ore
#

that wdf0101 which gives you ISR latency was afaik some shitty microsoft service u can disable

#

then you're pretty good

#

although your kernel max spikes really hard, probably due to some bad drivers/amount of devices

zenith sonnet
#

That was like a minute after rebooting

#

I'll try again

ashen spindle
fickle ore
#

nope

#

ISR latency = legacy mdoe

#

your nvidia, and audio is in legacy mode

#

isr count should be 0

ashen spindle
#

okay sure but it's below 0.2 ms in worst case so it doesn't actually change anything or how am I supposed to read the execution time

fickle ore
#

highest execution time are the spikes yeah

#

imagine if all your devices used 0.2ms it adds up real quick, then if the game uses 90% CPU

#

thats how you get microstutters

ashen spindle
#

sure but im not even at .7ms with everything in the list and I don't plan on adding 50usb keyboards or anything, I get that it might matter if I would add more but if I now just game/browse/whatever it doesn't matter, right?

fickle ore
#

shrug, you do what you want ๐Ÿ˜›

ashen spindle
#

just trying to understand what it changes before I change something :p

fickle ore
#

that wdf01000 was some service I disabled, so you can get that to 0 aswell, if you really want to minmax

#

forgot though

zenith sonnet
#

@fickle ore Haven't yet found out exactly what it is, just that you apparently shouldn't touch wdf01000.sys
Dunno why, either

fickle ore
#

eh they always say you shouldnt touch services, but arent we advanced users

#

you have backup right? ๐Ÿ˜„

ashen spindle
#

pfft you know very well backup is something for intermediate-users only :p

zenith sonnet
#

Yeah! We use common sense here!

old marlin
#

just run everything on raid 60 to reduce probability of data loss

ashen spindle
#

and daily online backups

old marlin
#

not trolling

#

any kind of backup is better than none

#

even if it is on an unreliable drive

ashen spindle
#

50% trolling, online backups can be nice, doesnt have to be daily ofc

old marlin
#

and you can go to far

#

well still better than no backup if that is a concern

#

for me at home I REALY don't give a shit about backups

#

since I am a windows user my pc is fully set up within half an hour

#

if I have a functional drive again

#

btw who tf thought it was a good idea to put the ram slots on the underside of a rackmounted workstation?

#

if I had a second drive it would basically only be games

#

and steam etc do pretty well with using all that again

#

I don't have to reinstall a lot of software which would be necessary for my usual workflow

#

true

#

in my mentality windows is more of a "just works" thing in comparison to linux

#

although I would switch to linux if game devs wouldn't be stupid

#

oof

#

never had that win 10

#

and I had more than just a handful installs

#

well if you don't wanna run any software that requires windows that is no problem

#

lol

#

well I hope denuvo dies, cause that would end gaming on linux at the rate it is going

zenith sonnet
#

I resolved to never buying a game with Denuvo again

#

If I ever did

old marlin
#

just voting with your wallet doesn't work unfortunatley

#

for every person that does that there are more than just 10 that don't give a fuck about it

zenith sonnet
#

People not giving a fuck is a problem

#

Can't comprehend why, though

pale sigil
#

Till was completely buggered in the shop I was just in

#

Taking 20 years for per item to add to the list

#

Someone said it could be the Internet

zenith sonnet
#

Do they lack the intelligence to care? Have they been trained not to care?

pale sigil
#

And I just face palmed

old marlin
#

usually the former

#

people that don't even know what denuvo is

#

or don't care because they just wanna play the game

pale sigil
#

Well

ashen spindle
#

I didn't give a fuck about denuvo bc I wanted to play bl3 and enjoyed the 100+ hours I already have in it, denuvo doesnt really affect me at all so I dont see a reason to take away that much fun for me to boycott a drm

pale sigil
#

Voting with wallet has some merets

#

Just not when it comes to denuvo lol

old marlin
#

not for games

pale sigil
#

Yes for games

old marlin
#

since that usually makes out less than 10%

#

impact is too little

pale sigil
#

Battlefront 2, anthem and a bunch of others most likely

old marlin
#

well that is just called "don't buy bad games for full price"

#

anthem preorders in the local gamestop were all cancelled

#

so I could have gotten it for a tenner two days before release

#

thing is that game especially showed that it won't be good

pale sigil
#

Oh and fallout 76

old marlin
#

oh yea

pale sigil
#

All down to making a stand

old marlin
#

@digital cliff same and I kinda regretted it

pale sigil
#

It's very rarely effective

#

But it has been

old marlin
#

well I got my playtime out of it

#

the game just wasn't as good as I hoped

pale sigil
#

I never pay full price

zenith sonnet
#

Are people still playing BL3? I still hear a lot more about BL2 than BL3

pale sigil
#

Ever

#

Refuse to

old marlin
#

yea maybe when the dlcs are out and are decent and not overpriced

#

bl2 has more replay value to me

#

or tps tbh

zenith sonnet
#

I liked TPS

pale sigil
#

Ye I preferred bl2

old marlin
#

characters are worse imo

#

as in the skills

#

they want to introduce a 4th tree for every char

#

but I doubt that they will be as muhc fun

#

most of the skills were, even when not broken, useless

#

too little impact

#

bad skill descriptions too

#

a lot of stuff had non mentioned cooldowns

#

which were nerfed without much notice

#

the final skills had so little impact that almost no good built actually used them

#

in most cases they just specced for one specific skill or pick the lesser evil to get the skill augments

crimson wigeon
#

Denuvo is evil sure like all DRM but unless you're using swapping a lot of hardware you probably won't notice it

#

(insert le hurts performance meme here which may or may not be truth)

old marlin
#

uhhm

#

denuvo does hurt perofrmance

#

quite a lot

ashen spindle
#

sometimes is, sometimes not, dunno how it is for bl3

old marlin
#

the bl3 version is the worst one

zenith sonnet
#

There seems to be conclusive evidence that it hurts performance significantly

old marlin
#

basically runs the game in a vm

#

yea

#

especially with lower thread count CPUs

zenith sonnet
#

Lots of games that ran a lot better after being cracked

old marlin
#

or having denuvo removed

#

the list of the games that had that was removed from wikipedia btw

ashen spindle
#

well yeah its tmk impossible to run at the same performance, but it matters if it's 50% or .5% lower fps or whatever

zenith sonnet
#

Except the Batman game. That ran so poorly it didn't make a dent :p

ashen spindle
old marlin
#

it is quite a lot

#

like not 50%

#

but also not .5%

#

depends on the game and hardware

ashen spindle
#

yea I know it was a gigantic improvement for like doom or so, but it's not the same on every game

old marlin
#

yea

zenith sonnet
#

Dunno why publishers adore it so much

old marlin
#

uhh yea

zenith sonnet
#

Doubt any sane dev would do that to their game

old marlin
#

sure

#

I honestly don;t know

#

yea

ashen spindle
#

yeah I really wonder why on an epic exclusive AAA game they wanted drm BlueBreadThinking

zenith sonnet
#

And, as Witcher and CP 2077 show, it's not even necessary

old marlin
#

which game was it where the devs boosted their sale numbers by publishing a torrent for their game?

zenith sonnet
#

Some very obscure indie title

old marlin
#

@ashen spindle epic basically doesn't have DRM

#

like they have a DRM system

zenith sonnet
#

That nobody would have heard about otherwise

old marlin
#

but that is so weak on purpose that you can forgo it by creating a folder at the right position

ashen spindle
#

no I meant people just had/have a hate boner for epic so it makes more sense than on steam to add drm

old marlin
#

oh

#

well epic got a lot of unfair criticism

#

steam also has a ton of exclusivity

#

the EGS is still barren of features

ashen spindle
#

sure but instead of complaining about the actual issues you still have a lot of people just hating on it bc its the cool thing

#

or assuming they still didn't features they added 6 months ago etc.

old marlin
#

true

ashen spindle
#

so instead of valid complains they just repeat complains read on reddit on release

zenith sonnet
#

Do they have library sharing yet?

old marlin
#

nope

#

won't happen

zenith sonnet
#

That's the one feature I really want

old marlin
#

same for a lot of other features which sould be there on release

zenith sonnet
#

GOG/Steam both do it
GOG a lot better than Steam, tbh

old marlin
#

well

#

GOG does it because you could just share your folder however you want

ashen spindle
#

yea but instead people complain about "lack of regional pricing" when that was added the first month or so, and they even refunded people who paid too much

old marlin
#

so just supporting it is a lot less hassle

zenith sonnet
#

Regional pricing is a scam to charge people from countries that are better off more money for the same game...

ashen spindle
#

??????

#

What

zenith sonnet
#

Why should the same game cost 70$ in Australia and 30$ in Mongolia or whatever?

ashen spindle
#

....

#

yeah I wonder why the 70$ game from australian devs costs 70$ there but not in a country where you make 70$ as salary a month

zenith sonnet
#

Obviously, they can afford to sell the game for 30$, so asking 40$ more from someone just because he's living in a country that's better off seems like a scam

ashen spindle
#

no the alternative would be to sell it for 70$ there too aka not at all

zenith sonnet
#

I don't see them doing that with other stuff, like graphics cards or cars

ashen spindle
#

ok then compare rent in silicon valey vs some place in the woods

zenith sonnet
#

Same with developing a game
Most of the cost is R&D and personell. The same goes for cars. Production is a fraction of the cost

ashen spindle
#

no for cars the production cost is much higher than what is the main cost for a game, which is emmployee's salary

#

*afford to sell limited copies at a lower price

zenith sonnet
#

Then why are they only selling it at a lower price in some places?

ashen spindle
#

because if you would sell it everywhere for 30 you would have to file for bankruptcy

zenith sonnet
#

Also, once development for a car is complete, most of the cost is already paid for. They can produce them for much less now. Same logic?

ashen spindle
#

no, actual assemmbly and the parts cost much more than giving one more person a downloadlink

#

also that would still be too much if you convert it 1:1 to some places

#

ontop of that regional pricing doesn't only mean you make it lower in someplaces, it also means you don't make it higher, aka 60$ and 60euro for the same game

#

in this discussed case at least, obv not always the case with everything

zenith sonnet
#

I see it the other way round, they're upselling the games where buying power is higher

ashen spindle
#

but they aren't

#

like this isn't my opinion, there are market studies and everything, if anything game prices should go up because they stayed the same during all the time, not regarding inflation, increased cost of development etc.

#

yea sure but thats a different topic, dlc and such is how they were able to mostly offset that and better cuts vs what retail took etc.

#

and it's not like everything is automatically adjusted, usually just bigger games where they can subsidize it or if its a strong community or such

#

what, no it ain't, if they make big games that sell they can afford to make them lower in lower income areas

#

to give an example: I asked a friend in brazil how much you get there and how much something costs: sekiro for example is 200, 260 for red dead 2 while getting like a grand in salary, pre tax

#

bc those two are not adjusted unlike other games

#

yup

#

also I misread your point, thought you meant that somehow causes lack of regional pricing

#

hence my confusion

#

anyway, I really don't see how you can call it a scam, when it means people don't have to pay 1/4 of pre-tax salary on a game

#

yeah which is why they introduced stuff like russian-keys for games that only activate it in russian bc people abused it etc.

zenith sonnet
#

How many copies does a game sell nowadays vs. 10 or 15 years ago?

old marlin
#

a shitton more usually

zenith sonnet
#

So, if anything prices should go down

old marlin
#

0-25A on 3.3V

#

Sure

old marlin
#

somebody here has and idea how I could print something on a normal paper printer

#

and have that with previously given dimensions?

#

I need to make a PSU bracket

#

but got no clue how to transfer the ATX psu holes correctly

#

I would make a 3d printed part but I can't use that

#

envrioment is too crrosive

#

that would be very nice of you

#

I have no idea what 2d cad to use

#

Basically only the mounting holes for an atx power supply

#

yea, nice thanks

#

Yea

#

I printed it in A4

#

Have a lunch break now but should be correct

#

I'll confirm it after that

old marlin
#

even better

#

holes were a tiny bit off on one side but good enough

#

just screwed the paper to a PSU and used that to center the holes to transfer correctly

#

big thanks

#

wait I'll gave the paper to the guy that cuts the holes

#

for both the screw was almost in on the line of the black circle

#

doesn't matter though

#

rough estimate with screwing it to the PSU is good enough to make a hole big enough that it doesn't matter

#

yea idk

#

yea

#

that is basicalyl the only thing you haven't exactly specified in the drawing

#

idk

#

yea

#

weird

#

I am in germany

#

no letter size here

#

only A4

#

and it was vertical difference

#

not horizontal

#

nope

#

yea ik

#

is the same on both ends

#

maybe the specification paper is wrong ?

#

I really don't know

#

PSU is a seasonic focus gold

#

I doubt that unit has wrong holes

#

I'll try to measure it again when I get it back

#

don't have something to measure the angels though

#

seems like it is on the same position as it should be

#

on the paper

#

weird

#

different formfactor would be completely different

#

I heavily doubt that the PSU is off spec

#

although pepeThonk

#

could be that they have really loose tolerances for that one

#

and seasonic just decided to go a bit off center since it doesn't matter either way

#

doesn't matter to me, I doubt this one will break in 3 months like the previous one

old marlin
#

kekw some weird standoffs are in the way now

#

temporary solution is to just have the PSU sitting in the case loosely apparently

Also interesting: The 3950X matches the W-3175X in bandwidth per channel, and almost in latency

I don't recall what the 9900K can do, but it gets lower latency than either I think

old marlin

well

AMD is close to pinning intel in CPUs in the high end

@zenith sonnet you care about good monitors right?

Lg nano ips

#

also freesync AND G sync support

zenith sonnet
#

It'll have a hard time beating the 27GL850, which is based on the same panel

old marlin
#

There's no mention of what version of HDMI it is, or how 1440p 240Hz and 4k 144Hz are achieved. Both of those would need either chroma subsampling or DSC to fit within DisplayPort 1.4's bandwidth (unless you use 1440p 240Hz and drop down to 8bpc). They would fit into an HDMI 2.1 connection uncompressed, but no video cards support that yet

zenith sonnet

if it does, though, then gg

old marlin

HDR600...

#

The next thing I will upgrade to is 30-32" UHD 144Hz Freesync2 HDR1000+

And none of them are a compelling upgrade over the 27GL850

Particularly since we know nothing about real world performance

Gotta have that +1000 to matter. HDR

Meh, another vulnerability that only works if they already had access to the system, not something anyone will bother doing unless you are working for government or smth like that

golden girder
#

@fickle ore Like if I would give you 1 โ‚ฌ each minute and you would give 1 โ‚ฌ each minute to someone else. There is a time there you have -1 โ‚ฌ, a time with 0 โ‚ฌ and a time there you have 1 โ‚ฌ.

#

If I would give you the Euro exactly 7 seconds after the minute starts and you would give a Euro 15 seconds after the minute starts. Then there is a delay of 8 seconds, but the total delay from the beginjing of the minute would be 15 seconds.

fickle ore
#

let's say the keyboard is scanned at 250hz, but it has a polling rate of 1khz. The interval is every 250hz, or 0.004s. That 0.004 is constant interval, but the polling rate of 1khz would never give -1 for that. All it would do is either add a 0 to the 0.004 or at maximum add 0.001 to the 0.004, becoming 0.005s. In average it would make it 0.0045. Hence making it an effective scan rate of 225hz.

#

I like information and being teached. I don't really feel like we're fighting anyways.

#

๐Ÿ˜‰

spiral belfry
#

@crimson wigeon @halcyon moss let's be honest, intel are on 7 year old architecture, so we won't get the AMD vulnerabilities for Zen (as it's basically brand new) for a few more years. Just have to remember that blob_love

fickle ore
#

@golden girder So is the analog movement in games not polled at 1khz? I understand they are not scanned at that interval, but are they also not polled?

golden girder
#

1 kHz polling rate => each 1 ms
250 hZ scanning rate => each 4 ms

We count from a specific time point, which I call the start of everything (SoE). :-)

Best case (action happen at scanning in time and polling happen at scanning in time too):
Something happen at 3.9~ ms after SoE and the scanning occure at 4 ms after SoE and the polling occure at 4.0~1, then the overall delay would be at nearly 0 ms. So on the best case for the delay from scanning to polling is always nearly 0 ms.

Worst case (action happen at scanning but not in time and polling happen at scanning but not in time either):
Something happen at 4 ms after SoE and so the scanning can't get it so it needs to wait until the next period. So the scanning occure at 8 ms after SoE and the polling occure at 9 ms, then the overall delay would be 5 ms. So on the worst case for the delay from scanning to polling is always 1 ms.

So the total delay for the best case is around nearly 0 ms and for the worst case around 5 ms, so the everage is around 2.5 ms. But this doesn't matter because as soon as both rates are really constant, if you set up an experiment, the delay from polling to scanning would be always constant and between nearly o up to 1 ms.

#

So the delay from polling to scanning is always constant in that example within an experiment (if you don't unplug the keyboard). But differs from experiment to experiment (if you re-plug the keyboard).

I don't know the actual scanning rate, but I would guess the Wooting can provide a new value each period, for the slower periods if you don't do something esle like changing RGB or sending commands.

#

For the the faster periods it's different, because Wooting says that the scanning is just a bit faster (on Tachyon) then the polling, every little process time delay or inconsistency can cause that the period is missed.

#

For the slower rate it shouldn't matter much if the MCU needs something else to do, but on the faster everything can cause a delay.

#

@fickle ore See above...

#

The system always polls at the polling rate, but it's not guaranteed that the device are able to provide a new value.

question about steam family sharing, does it only work on the same pc, or can I somehow play game X that account A owns, while on account B at a different pc?

dapper ridge
#

how it works

fair gull
#

quin yes you can

dapper ridge
#

is person A has to sign into machine C and turn on family sharing for that computer, at which point person A can log out and person B can log in and have access to Game X on pc C

fair gull
#

thats how it works

ashen spindle
#

ah missed a detail I guess, playing something account A has on PC X without logging account A in on PC X

fair gull
#

prob

dapper ridge
#

but it is ultimately a one time thing

#

should never have to sign in with account A again

fair gull
#

unless pc c changes its "signature"

#

however steam actually calculates that

dapper ridge
#

or user A disallows

fair gull
#

or that

ashen spindle
#

yeah but I want that 1 time to not happen at all ideally

dapper ridge
#

impossible

fair gull
#

yep

ashen spindle
#

thats what I thought, just wondering if there was a loophole or so

fair gull
#

nope

dapper ridge

become super pro hacker

fair gull
#

ya that

ashen spindle
fair gull
#

i mean u prob fear that u get kicked out of teamviewer or someshit and they stay logged in right?

ashen spindle
#

nah

fair gull
#

then i dont get why that 1 time is so "bad"

ashen spindle
#

it's not so bad, just would be easier without it

fair gull
#

youre right

#

but thats why its there

#

u see its to ensure that hackers also cant just family share your library

#

if someone you family shared with hacks while using your library you cant use family sharing anymore with the account that shared it and you also get a vac ban for the same game and same reason

#

so they wanna make sure that u actually want to family share with said people

dapper ridge
#

well also I think the ultimate intended purpose is to have a family machine with many users who can all use the games on that pc

#

that way little Bobby can play his dad's E rated games

ashen spindle

ye I know, that's why I knew if there is a way its not in the faq as it's not the intended use

yep

#

so

fair gull
#

easy fix

dapper ridge
#

tty

fair gull
#

rm -rf / --no-preserve-root

dapper ridge
#

killall xorg

#

run script from tty

wheat plume
#

killall xorg ๐Ÿค”

#

hmm I could try that yeh

dapper ridge
#

you need to have nothing using nvidia

#

and I assume xorg is presently controlling it

wheat plume
#

I guess xorg itself is

#

yeh

dapper ridge
#

since you are on manjaro

#

what is your display manager?

#

gnome right

wheat plume
#

Yeah

dapper ridge
#

do you know what greeter you use

wheat plume
#

gdm

dapper ridge
#

so both of those need to be killed

#

to stop using xorg

wheat plume
#

so switching to tty from the desktop will not work?

dapper ridge
#

switch to a tty

#

and then I believe you will want to run this

systemctl isolate multi-user.target```
#

from there you can rmmod nvidia-drm

#

and run the script

#

and then to get back to graphical run

systemctl start graphical.target```
wheat plume
#

Ok I'll try

dapper ridge
#

good luck

wheat plume

Same error
Module still in use

dapper ridge
#

hmm

#

run

ps -ef | grep nvidia
wheat plume
#

Lemme check the readme that's apparently on the website

dapper ridge
#

so one thing to see I guess

#

when you do lsmod | grep nvidia

#

the number is how many things are using it

#

if that is not a 0 you cannot unload it

#

I mean you could uninstall the old nvidia driver

wheat plume
#

I shut down the PC and went to tty from gdm

#

Didn't login to desktop and it's still using Nvidia stuff

dapper ridge
#

yes because gdm runs on xorg

wheat plume
#

... oh right duh

dapper ridge
#

also check if nvidia-persistenced is running

#

should be a systemd service

wheat plume
#

dapper ridge
#

you did run the commands I gave you for systemctl in sudo right?

wheat plume
#

Yeh

dapper ridge
#

k

#

hmmm

#

lsmod | grep nvidia again

#

how many are using the drm module

wheat plume

8

dapper ridge
#

hot dam

#

ok

#

you can probably try this

#

testing first

#

wheat plume
#

Rmmod Nvidia worked now

dapper ridge
#

oh really>

wheat plume
#

Yeh

#

No output

dapper ridge
#

hmm

#

odd

#

well I guess for future reference

#

systemctl set-default runlevel3.target

#

this command will force you to stay in text version

wheat plume
#

O.o

dapper ridge
#

and then you can revert by doing
systemctl set-default graphical.target

wheat plume
#

Ooh

#

So you always boot to tty?

dapper ridge
#

just tested

#

I literally cant startx

wheat plume
#

O

#

That's bad

dapper ridge
#

xorg refuses to boot and tells me inactive

#

well no

#

its perfect for this

#

no display servers running

wheat plume

dapper ridge
#

and so I revert it back to graphical target

#

and like magic

wheat plume
#

Ahh

dapper ridge
#

I have graphics

wheat plume
#

Should I try?

dapper ridge
#

if it unloaded

#

no

#

you should be good

#

try the script

#

if script fails again

#

then might be worth a try

#

before you set it tho run this:
sudo systemctl get-default

#

and make note of whatever that is set to

wheat plume
#

I did

mpv media player is great if you have album art otherwise it just shows a black box

I've used MPC-HC for a decade at this point.

I seem to recall vaguely using K-Lite so many years ago, when you needed codecs to play everything. MPC just plays it all.

Used that before
Switched to mpv a few years back

#

Seems to run better, but the lack of GUI bothered me a bit

#

And I also never had an issue playing a file with it

@reef patrol About MPC-HC:

#

It's just outdated and imperfect. There's no reason you should have to install madVR for good rendering, or XySubFilter for good subtitles, or ReClock for video-based timing. If MPC-HC was a good video player, it would have all that built in. There's also no reason it should still use DirectShow. LAV is the only worthwhile codec anyway, so it would be a lot simpler if MPC-HC just called FFmpeg directly. And if you got rid of DirectShow, there's no reason it should be Windows-only. Programs as complicated as web browsers can be cross-platform, so why should something as simple as a video player only work on one platform?

If MPC-HC wasn't abandoned and had all the development time in the world, I think it would make those changes, but making those changes would effectively turn it into a different video player. Or, to put it in the words of an ex-MPC-HC dev:
<Armada> can confirm, mpv killed MPC-HC for me ;)
<Armada> When I looked at what needed to be done for MPC-HC to have a future, I concluded it basically needed to become MPV :P

Someone really needs to make a good (and actively maintained) MPC-HC-like GUI frontend for mpv. If they did that, I think it would be the final nail in MPC-HC's coffin. Even pirate groups and anime groups are recommending mpv now. The only thing holding mpv back from widespread adoption is the lack of a GUI.

Not a single of my videos are in 1440p, let alone 4K ๐Ÿ˜„

And I've never had issues with bad sub rendering.

Depends on what you watch, maybe?

I'm used to watching Netflix on Chrome. That's 720P...on a 1440P monitor.

I don't really have big demands here ๐Ÿ˜„

Maybe the reason is that MPC-HC hasn't been updated in what, 11 years?
