dapper ridge
#

so

#

I use vsc

crimson wigeon
#

I wish I could use (neo)vim for all but I'm far too lazy to setup all plugins to give it some IDE functionality (and in my experience those require tons of manual setup and then barely work)

dapper ridge
#

yeah, for a time I did all my linux code editing in vim

#

and then I migrated to neovim

#

then I just gave up on *vim

#

now I use micro and nano

crimson wigeon
#

And all the vim emulation modes in other editors suck shit

dapper ridge
#

never really tried em

#

did not see the point

crimson wigeon
#

Exactly

dapper ridge
#

I mean if its a full ide, it should have normal shit that works like ctrl and shit

#

not to mention scrolling and shit works correctly

pale sigil
#

Whats a decent tool to clone OS to an m.2?

dapper ridge
#

@pale sigil I would honestly probably use one of my 3.5 drive cloners and a 2.5 m.2 mount

reef patrol
#

I use Acronis for all cloning. Not free though.

old marlin
#

acronis is decent

#

although there are a lot of free tools that can do the same

reef patrol
#

I'm sure - It just "works" and is what I have on my Swiss army knife.

old marlin
#

only had a single drive I couldn't clone

#

but nothing could

#

dunno what the problem iwth it had

#

probably a dead drive

reef patrol
#

I love how it just goes "So the destination drive is half the size? Sure. We'll do that"

old marlin
#

lol

reef patrol
#

Sure you need to have enough unused space, but I have never had it go "Yeah... so we couldn't resize the partition"

halcyon moss
#

fresh install ๐Ÿ˜‰

reef patrol
#

It takes a lot longer to do a fresh install of a pensioners PC than simply cloning over a drive. We still do a lot of HDD to SSD conversions of old PCs.

halcyon moss
#

oh, other ppl's stuff, yeah no, clone all the way

#

but for myself.. new hdd, fresh install

reef patrol
#

I generally fresh install myself - But I just swapped my main OS NVME from 500gb to 1TB and I got lazy. But it worked nicely.

halcyon moss
#

years of cruft

old marlin
#

even then you may have reasons why you want exact copies

#

especially in industrial cases

#

with software you can't just reinstall etc

fair gull
#

i just use hdclone

reef patrol
#

Yeah that's usually the reasoning. Avoiding to have to set up weird third party apps that can take hours to reinstall.

old marlin
#

it isn't about avoiding

#

sometimes we don't have the option to reinstall

#

we have a nxray analysis machine for checking how thick a metal layer on a part is

#

we can't install the software on the connected computer

#

last time it died without a backup we had to pay 1700 euro for a computer worth 500

#

which came with ram loose and without the needed COM port

#

which required us to modify the software to be able to run with a COM PCI-card

fair gull
#

we either use snapshot or hdclone depending on what we want

pale sigil
#

nvidia forums are just plain awful these days

#

#

i wish amd would get good again

#

and im ready to bet that 2 of them in crossfire dont run that much better

ashen spindle
#

but they will be able to toast my marshmallows better in crossfire

zenith sonnet
#

Nobody unironically uses CF/SLI any more

#

And mGPU didn't take off either

ashen spindle
#

benchmarks do

fair gull
#

ya but u spend twice the money and get like what

#

20% perf increase

#

thats some trash value

ashen spindle
#

well depends on the game

#

literally ranges from 0-100

#

though the average sadly isn't great

zenith sonnet
#

Most games don't support it at all, and thus the low average

#

Where it works, CF usually does better than SLI, but it has even less support

fair gull
#

sli doesnt exist anymore tho

zenith sonnet
#

2080/Super/Ti still have NVLink

#

Afaik

fair gull
#

technically not sli

#

literally based on the same tech tho

zenith sonnet
#

marketing terms

#

AMD actually changed tech, though

fair gull
#

na its more like the evolution of sli

#

its literally not sli but it is

zenith sonnet
#

It's pointless for gaming really
There are professional workloads that benefit more

ashen spindle
#

the interresting part will be when chiplet gpus come out, depending on how they are made it could made it easier or harder to combine two gpu's

zenith sonnet
#

I would think there's a latency issue

fair gull
#

i just want more vram

#

and tensor cores

#

but sadly

#

i either spend 8grand to get that or only get one

zenith sonnet
#

It's also easier to make larger graphics cards

#

Just combine more GPU chiplets

ashen spindle
#

not necessarily

fair gull
#

someone wanna buy me?

ashen spindle
#

as you do run into issues with NUMA/UMA like zen did on the second gen TR chips, and idk how gpus best handle that since they do work vastly different from cpus

zenith sonnet
#

I would assume they learned, and don't make that 'mistake' again

#

TR 3000 fixed that

ashen spindle
#

I mean they learned how to avoid issues from it, they didn't magically solve it

#

still causes higher latency

zenith sonnet
#

Wasn't the issue that not all chiplets were connected directly to the I/O die, but daisy chained?

#

They're not doing that any more, at least

fair gull
#

i just noticed ur building 2 pcs

zenith sonnet
#

Yes

ashen spindle
#

(non-) uniform memory access, so if you equal it out windows scheduler and such dont cause issues but you also have generally higher latency for all chiplets

zenith sonnet
#

On the new TR CPUs, all chiplets are connected to memory equally. Also, latency improved a lot in this generation. It's only an issue for few, very specific workloads now

zenith sonnet
#

@reef patrol Is there a CPU block shortage in Europe or what?

solar hinge
reef patrol
#

What the deuce is tidal.

#

(I am being facetious*)

old marlin
#

another music streaming service

reef patrol
old marlin
#

I think this one is special because it delivers "uncompressed" flac streams

crimson wigeon
#

but FLAC is compressed, just losslessly

old marlin
#

which even professionals can't differentiate from what spotify delivers

reef patrol
#

And it has a few exclusive artists. I prefer Spotify over all. Too much old stuff missing on Tidal etc.

old marlin
#

I know that flac is compressed

#

alos flac isn't 100% lossless

#

not possible unless you use infinte amounts of digital data

#

or have an opion to save analog data with infinite granuality

crimson wigeon
#

With that logic so is all digital audio

old marlin
#

yea

#

that is in fact the case

#

doesn't matter though

#

even a good mp3 can't be discerned from a truly analog recording

#

for humans

reef patrol
#

Depends on the compression and listening equipment ultimately. A lot of frequencies we can't hear directly, but we can sense and feel them.

old marlin
#

yea true

#

but even with the most high end listening equipment you can't discern the two

#

given the mp3 has enough bitrate headroom to work with

#

and you set it up correctly

#

which basically anything on spotify has

reef patrol
#

I'll leave that up to the audiophiles. I test using the highest Spotify quality, since that is at best what my core demographic is likely to use.

Audiophiles don't buy "consumer" grade stuff, so I prefer to review from a perspective that mirrors the users.

fickle ore
#

why the fixation with "discerning"?

old marlin
#

cause it means that the difference is irrelevant to humans

#

don't wanna say that mp3 is the ideal format

#

not even the people that mande it do that

old marlin

no matter what I do to the comparison it just won't work

I only have 418 drivers

reef patrol
ashen spindle
#

hrm BL3 crashed twice after some time, my bet its the gpu overheating, wonder why it draws so much more than anything else

#

cleaned case today, wasn't really much dust, pushed the fancurve a bit higher, hope I can enjoy the dlc this weekend

#

I do hope nvidia will be a bit early with their next gpu and not wait till gamescom or so again

reef patrol
#

Your GPU really shouldn't be able to overheat though.

#

They will clock down to match their maxtemp once you hit the thermal limit (ish). You'd need a very bad airflow.

ashen spindle
#

doesnt really reach above 80 in other scenarios from what I can tell

reef patrol
#

Most cards have 80 something as their limit.

ashen spindle
#

82 is what I do get after some time

#

it could be the OC but thats been on it for longer and didn't really cause issues on bl3 months ago either

reef patrol
#

Here's what I'd do. Boot up Furmark and run it at 1080P. It should level out the temperature within a few minutes (It shows a graph).

If it stays stable, the game is at fault.

ashen spindle
#

eh, ill first try the higher fancurve and try furmark if it crashes again

#

still want a new gen gpu coming so so I can upgrade my settings and not drop below my refreshrate :p

reef patrol
#

Furmark will hit 100% fan very fast,

ashen spindle
#

oh yeah but I dont have it installed rn so just playing bl3 anyway is the lazier variant :p

reef patrol
#

๐Ÿ˜„

zenith sonnet
#

Doesn't Nvidia throttle their cards power delivery?

#

So Furmark can't actually pull more power?

reef patrol
#

It can pull as much as the card allows - Which is still more than any game will do.

ashen spindle
#

never said what card I have breadthink but yeah, furmark ist still drawing more like a powervirus and not like a game would

solar hinge
#

what card do you have?

ashen spindle

1080

I'm wondering if I should go clear, or copper top

reef patrol
#

I went for nickel/silver metal look personally, because it fit my motherboard look.

Also plexi can fracture if you overscrew those fittings into them.

zenith sonnet
#

I like the 'Black Copper' style with black nickel plating

reef patrol
#

I wanted one of those limited edition ones they made earlier but missed it. They made black/red and black/gold.

#

Cest la vie.

zenith sonnet
#

They have coloured TR blocks ๐Ÿ˜„

#

The nickel block doesn't really fit the style, I guess
It's mostly black

#

But the brackets are silvery, anyway

zenith mirage
#

Are palit GPUs on the lower end of AIBs?

#

Looking at a 2070 for like ยฃ350 but I've barely even heard of them which I don't think is a good sign

#

Also the fact that it's significantly cheaper doesn't inspire confidence

pale sigil
#

2070 was discontinued

#

Palit is cheap af

#

usually lower end of the series

#

not terrible tho

zenith mirage
#

2070 was discontinued?

#

That seems fast

pale sigil
#

Ye

#

Its 2070 super now

zenith mirage
#

Oh

#

What's the difference? Just better overall?

pale sigil
#

ye

#

its the ti basically

ashen spindle
#

yeah ti was too basic for nvidia

pale sigil
#

i take it you were looking at this?

ashen spindle
#

so they called it super

#

bc marketing

zenith mirage
#

I am

pale sigil
ashen spindle
#

but alos be careful, some vendors used Super as a marketing name for their models already, so it might be a super but not an actual one

pale sigil
#

overclockers would not do that

ashen spindle
#

I didnt mean the site that sells, I meant AiBs like palit

pale sigil
#

ah

zenith mirage
#

Is a 1080ti better than a 2070? Is that what I'm seeing?

pale sigil
#

yes

ashen spindle
#

yes

zenith mirage
#

Interesting

pale sigil
#

not really :p

#

2070 = 1080 2080 = 1080ti

ashen spindle
#

a 2070 super is almost on paar with a 1080 ti, some games a less than others

pale sigil
#

basically how it should have been

#

from the start

zenith mirage
#

I am having issues finding a super for the same price as a 1080ti :p

pale sigil
#

they are expensive af

zenith sonnet
#

2070 Super is actually a 2080 Subpar

zenith mirage
#

Might just get a 1080ti then

#

Don't really care about ray tracing

zenith sonnet
#

Get a 5700 XT then

pale sigil
#

AMD

#

ew

zenith mirage
ashen spindle
#

ehh, whats the price difference and what are the models, its unlikely you still get a good deal on a 1080ti

pale sigil
#

GPU wise anyway

ashen spindle
#

5700 (xt) are good cards

zenith sonnet
#

Same perf as a 1080 Ti, but cheaper and with more support

zenith mirage
#

I could get a 1080ti for ยฃ330

#

Can't find supers for less than like ยฃ490ish

zenith sonnet
#

New 19.12.2 drivers gave the 5700 XT a 5-6% overall perf boost

ashen spindle
#

yeah no the 5700xt is good but still not a 1080ti really

#

an unused 1080ti?

zenith sonnet
ashen spindle
#

whats the chart at 1440p like?

ashen spindle
#

hrm interresting

zenith sonnet
#

And 4K

#

Radeon VII didn't get retesting with the new drivers

ashen spindle
#

*Deadeon 7 you mean

zenith sonnet
#

It works ๐Ÿคท

#

Sorta unfortunate, I know

#

5700 XT was just too good

#

Came so close the VII stopped making sense

#

And it has received a lot of wine since

ashen spindle
#

anyway, yes if you can find a cheap 1080 ti that card is still good

#

oh please stop with the bullshit "fine wine" stuff

zenith sonnet
#

Kek

ashen spindle
#

its not fine wine if your software sucks and takes months before it works and then market it as "improvement"

#

is that a used 1080ti you see that cheap or what is it? @zenith mirage

zenith mirage
#

It's amazon warehouse stock so I can send it back easily if I needed to

#

But yeah, that makes it used

#

How used, you can't really know. From my experience it basically means unboxed but not actually used

pale sigil
#

ohh

#

1 year warrenty too

ashen spindle
#

ehh not a fan of used cards in that area anymore, way too likely its a mining card or so

pale sigil
#

oh i dont like used cards to

#

im to cursed to get one

dapper ridge
#

integrated graphics ftw!

zenith mirage
#

I feel less uneasy buying a used card from amazon

#

But yes generally speaking I avoid used GPUs

#

Then again, the crypto craze has been gone for a while. I don't think there's gonna be warehouse stock left from thag time. But hey, I could easily be wrong

ashen spindle
#

well yeah its been a while, now its not profitable anymore which is why the last used ones are from miners, there isnt really something you upgrade from a 1080ti to, unless you want the best, but then you do that instantly

dapper ridge
#

im waiting for their next line of cards tbh

#

the 3k series I assume?

ashen spindle
#

most likely

fair gull
#

inb4 just slightly better

#

but triple the price

ashen spindle
#

nah, amd wasnt slacking as much in the gpu space for nvidia to act like intel

fair gull

i somehow am atm

samsung b die is not EOL btw, those articles just read the sites wrong

zenith sonnet

Yes and no
Afair they discontinued the chips that were sold as the overclockable consumer RAM we know
But they do at least still produce them for industrial applications, particularly at high operating temperatures

ashen spindle
#

they just dont sell them directly anymore, what they cancelled were the samsung-sold b-die based modules

#

so you dont get Samsung b die as samsung anymore, but you get like TridentZ or whatever as B die

@dapper ridge how is it putty sucking lol its literally a setting

tk i get

pale sigil

cos all scammers use it

fair gull

its just another cheap tld where most names arent already bought and sold for ridiculous prices

pale sigil

i cant stand that

dapper ridge

this is my domain

pale sigil

ashen spindle

just set it up in google cloud

wheat plume

That works??

ashen spindle

wheat plume

Nvidia with the low end gpus, razer with the notebooks, now amd with this etc.

I mean, Mercedes has done how many iterations of the C-Class model now?

ashen spindle

old marlin

well people that were expecting a 1600 are getting a better product

AMD has done much worse

@jagged swan why would you want kailh blue clickies?

You can probably get kailh box clickies on candykeys

pale sigil

@pale sigil since u prob used a standard disk copying tool ull need to change the boot config of the cloned disk

fair gull

@pale sigil yes

#

this is german

#

we take work serious

#

the vocaloid project cant even project em onto stages

#

they use big ass screens

#

those are the same people that made the by far best voice synth with multiple voices and even phonetic tempalting

wheat plume
#

They use screens for Miku but IA can move around the dancers moved past her twice

#

She seems 3d projected

fair gull
#

theres no 3d projection technology

#

theyd literally use that for each and every vocaloid concert otherwise

#

and even take more money for tickets

#

this is the dream of each virtual singer

wheat plume

Then how?

fair gull

the same they do movie magic

Yes

ashen spindle

uhh, etoro maybe? binance is nice for trading but I dont remember if you can buy there too

zenith mirage

you can IIRC, but you'll need ID

pale sigil

i think its like $40 in fees

zenith mirage

pretty much every exchange will require ID

pale sigil

ashen spindle

you could see if you buy tether or something like that easily and trade that instead of bitcoin

buy giftcards and sell them on, proper scammer style

LTT straight up recommends putting keyboards in dishwashers now. I cannot comprehend this level of incompetence.

old marlin
#

wait what

reef patrol
feral jolt
#

Tbh it doesnt seem like a bad idea if you have the week to wait before plugging it in again

reef patrol
#

It ruins the lube.

#

Those switches are going to SUCK

feral jolt
#

I might try this with my old keyboard that is already suck and really dirty internally

reef patrol
#

Also - Soap residue in the PCB. Drying it won't remove whatever is inside other than water.

feral jolt
#

I dont think you're supposed to use soap

reef patrol
#

Salt and detergent are pretty hard to drain from a dishwasher once put in. Unless you mean to run it dry over several uses.

feral jolt
#

I could just rinse it out in the sink I guess

old marlin
#

well

#

you CAN not use soap etc

#

and it is a legitimate cleaning methods for electronics

#

but not just any dishwasher in normal use

#

and no salt etc

reef patrol
#

I'll rephrase then - Most dishwashers I have encountered do NOT offer a "rinse only" option. If you've loaded the salt box with salt, and the detergent box - They're going to be used.

And even with just water, you're still going to wreck the lube.

#

Just a PCB is a completely different story.
