lol

ashen spindle
#

its quite a nice channel if you are interested for niche stuff or OC'ing beyond watercooling at home

sick creek
#

ya i like that he's no bs

warped dove
#

Discord: "please keep your messages under 2000 characters" dude

ashen spindle
#

rip

sick creek
#

bahaha

warped dove
#

Was copy pasted my a text document I just wrote. Also only 4 words over 2000 apparently.

#

I will not be censored.

sick creek
#

lmao just remove some spaces rollsafe

ashen spindle
#

just post the 4 words and we'll guess the others ez

warped dove
#

Lol 4 words worth of spaces

#

Is k it's not related. Just a mouse recommendation. Will post later.

sick creek
#

4 words over 2000 could be 8 characters or 40+? lol

#

ugh there are no ballistix elite 2x16gb

#

or even 1x16

sick creek
#

this is going to sound super stupid but is there a black one

#

haha

#

what's the difference between the AT and LT models

#

oh asus specific

#

well, not asus specific but guaranteed to be compatible

ashen spindle
#

just marketing

sick creek
#

also, how dare you not recommend RGB ram thonk

ashen spindle
#

not my fault they mostly put that on stuff above 2x8 4000

#

makes sense(somewhat) on intel but not amd

sick creek
#

i got you

#

do you know if there will be any change in UCLK/FCLK (or IF i guess) speeds with the 3950x

ashen spindle
#

there wont

sick creek
#

so 3800 will still be king

zenith sonnet
#

King of what?

sick creek
#

of performance and lowest possible latency

ashen spindle
#

well, hard to say, if they use only the best binned 8core chips for that one, it might also get your more chips that can do 1933 or so

sick creek
#

yea ok, but thats not a huge diff

#

i mean across 12 or 16 cores maybe

#

but not 8

ashen spindle
#

well I meant 8core chiplets with that

#

since you do have 16 cores

sick creek
#

but basically if i do 3700x, get the mem speed to 3800, oc the cpu to like 4.3-ish

#

i should be plenty good

ashen spindle
#

honestly it might be better to just not touch the cpu and just crank up the cooling

#

since the weird boosting usually works better than using a static OC

sick creek
#

fair enough. i'm not going to do water right away cause i just dont have the time

ashen spindle
#

just put a NHD15 or so on it and you're good

sick creek
#

lawd have mercy that thing is massive

#

stick with included fans or add more?

ashen spindle
#

nothing extra needed

#

the paste from it is also good, no need to get something else

sick creek
#

i was gonna use my cryonaut

#

i've used noctua paste in the past tho

ashen spindle
#

just make sure you get a version that has the mounting bracket for the AM4 socket

sick creek
#

er, kryonaut

zenith sonnet
#

@sick creek Don't OC the CPU

#

Ryzen 3000 performs better if you don't

#

Just make sure to run 1003ABBA

#

And soon 1004

sick creek
#

ya i plan on buying today at some point

#

and building next week

#

i'm still trying to decide on mem

#

i've gone down the rabbit hole

#

makes me doubt everything. the crucial ram they tested tested very poorly so

ashen spindle
#

you mean the one at 2666mhz?

zenith sonnet
#

What's his verdict?

sick creek
#

oh shit i didnt even notice that

ashen spindle
#

its at 2666 and still doing well

sick creek
#

fair

#

i want to know what the 3866 kit he's using is

#

looks like g.skill?

ashen spindle
#

think so yea

sick creek
#

i've always avoided them.. is their ram decent?

zenith sonnet
#

Use the Ryzen DRAM calculator, though

sick creek
#

ya i will start with the dram calc

ashen spindle
#

yes crucial is owned by micron which is why they always use micron dies

zenith sonnet
#

Anyway, is B-die or E-die better?

sick creek
#

from what i've looked up, neither

#

it's not that simple

ashen spindle
#

yeah it varies, but b die is end of life

sick creek
#

werent people saying that like 2 years ago tho

#

and it's still around lol

ashen spindle
#

think the announcement came this year?

sick creek
#

maybe it was just a rumor then

zenith sonnet
#

There's still significant stock, though

#

So they won't disappear in like 3 weeks

ashen spindle
#

first results are from May this year

#

looks like production stopped Q2 so there still some stock over

sick creek
#

where does g.skill get their memory modules from

#

or do they actually make their own?

ashen spindle
#

micron, samsung, sk hynix are the 3 choices you have, you'd need to look what they use it a kit

#

unless its like crucial who are owned by micron, it could be anything

sick creek
#

ok yeah, all i can find is wikipedia saying "The company does not manufacture the memory dies, it purchases the memory dies and assembles them into a DIMM memory module ready for sale to customers."

#

lol THANKS

ashen spindle
#

in theory they could even switch it in the middle of production

#

as long as it does what they advertise it at

sick creek
#

this is so unnecessarily vague.. i wish it was easier to choose a high-end mem kit

#

lol

#

...kidding

#

never heard of them

ashen spindle
#

those are some THICC sticks

sick creek
#

tall as hell

#

its the heatsink

#

those will definitely not fit with every cpu cooler haha

ashen spindle
#

yea could have some issues with a tall noctua lmao

sick creek
#

lmao ok, just as an aside

#

why the fuck does this msi godlike board have a 1/4" headphone jack

#

lulw

reef patrol
#

Because its superior bcaWhat5Yes2

sick creek
#

but i just dont understand

#

anyone using a 1/4" jack is going to have a dedicated DAC

#

so... wut

reef patrol
#

It's a message to those who dont have one, or are too lady to get one. "Your Sennheisers will do fine"

sick creek
#

lol

reef patrol
#

It's marketing but it works.

old marlin
#

I get why

#

problem it that it just takes too much space and needs thick cables to be reasonable

pale sigil
#

Ye I had issues

sick creek
#

my old hd-555's came with a 1/4 (6.3mm) by default but

#

thats the last one that had that

#

everything else comes with an adapter which is just spinthink

halcyon moss
#

is there really any benefit for the larger jack?

sick creek
#

if you have headphones with high ohm resistance

#

you need to be able to push the current through it

halcyon moss
#

hmm, minijack already has quite a surface area..

sick creek
#

but if you're using a 1/4" adapter on a 1/8" plug there is zero advantage

#

cause the internal wires are going to be a smaller gauge

neat oriole
#

???

#

The size of the jack has no affect other than they’re less likely to snap

#

You don’t need a bigger jack to push more power

#

It’s not the wires

#

It’s just the plug is more secure

#

Having an adapter between your amp and headphone cable just means the amp is less likely to break if you yank your cable or something

sick creek
#

always thought it was just to handle higher power reqs but hey

#

like higher gauge cable wont work with a 3.5mm jack

#

so if you have cans that need something better than 30ga wire..lol

#

also i think i decided on the gigabyte x570 aorus master

#

i was going to get the xtreme but it's just overkill

#

and 2x the price

zenith sonnet
#

I want the Asrock X570 Aqua :p

sick creek
#

didnt they only make 999 of those

zenith sonnet
#

Yeah

#

They didn't sell out yet

#

No surprise...

#

999€ is way too much for a motherboard

sick creek
#

yikes

#

wait a minute tho

#

is the cpu cooler built in?

#

haha

zenith sonnet
#

Yes

#

Minus 300€ for the massive waterblock

#

And you're essentially left with a 700€ board

#

Which fits in with the other highest end boards

sick creek
#

seems about right i guess

#

where do you even buy it tho

zenith sonnet
#

Mindfactory, Caseking have stock

sick creek
#

USA?

zenith sonnet
#

I dunno

sick creek
#

probably sold out in the US

#

it's not listed anywhere

#

not on ebay tho, so maybe unreleased

#

¯_(ツ)_/¯

#

good thing i checked this

ashen spindle
#

I like that I can use my headphones on my phone aswell, dont use it much but it is nice

sick creek
#

also why are these so expensive D;

#

they're basically the best performing ones on the QVL for the motherboard

#

also @ashen spindle almost all of the ballistix ram isnt listed on the QVL

#

which is disappointing, cause i was going to buy those

ashen spindle
#

sure but the chance of it not working is so very low

sick creek
#

right, but if i start OC'ing and run into issues gigabyte is gonna be all ¯_(ツ)_/¯

ashen spindle
#

I mean, look through other boards with a similar layout from GB and see if there are more listed on them

sick creek
#

same thing

#

either gigabyte doesnt really test crucial memory or they werent sent any

ashen spindle
#

or maybe some other micron chips they tested are basically the same so they didn't double test it idk

sick creek
#

ya idk

#

this one is listed: BLE8G4D40BEEAK

#

but it's a single dimm

#

and i dont want to go thru the process of buying and returning tons of ram to get sticks that work well together

#

actually- you might be right

#

4x kit (32gb) is BLE4K8G4D40BEEAK

#

2x kit is BLE2K8G4D40BEEAK

#

so it's just 2K and 4K before the 8G

neat oriole
#

Why do you want higher gauge wire tho

#

They just make cables stiffer and easier to break

safe patrol
#

I would prefer 6.3mm audio port on my PC xD most pro-level audio uses that, or XLR

safe patrol
#

also.. how the heck is Linux Kernel already upto version 5.x

#

It seems to have gone 2.4 - 2.6 - 5.x

ashen spindle
#

so I thought I saw some news about new nvidia gpus release date

#

turns it it's just wccftech making an entire article about another tech guy saying something about "half of year 2020" in a speculation

#

nice journalism

crimson wigeon
#

Because version numbers are arbitrary

ashen spindle
#

I mean, yeah I'm not preordering a gpu or anything lmao

#

still good to know if you or someone else thinks about changing pc parts

sick creek
#

ye i'm just gonna wait on pci-e 4.0 benchmarks from amd AND nvidia and then choose the better of the two

ashen spindle
#

ehhh, I'm still not sure that'll make a difference for single gpu

#

I know there was a test recently to show how much it does (doesnt) do on current gpus but I cant find it

royal pebble
#

Yeah for consumer grade hardware adding more lane bandwidth hasn't really made a difference

#

Especially when you consider RTX GPUs still don't saturate the 3.0 link

ashen spindle
#

ah I found it on techpowerup

#

a 2080 ti still gives 98% performance on x8 lanes on pcie3

#

so only once we get a card that is double the power of an 2080 ti we need pcie 4

zenith sonnet
#

PCIe4 is very interesting for storage, though

ashen spindle
#

definitely

neat oriole
#

Thicker wire and connector size are not related at all

#

Also just get an external dac and amp, most of them have a quarter inch jack anyway

feral jolt
#

I'd want pcie 4 for the m.2s not the GPU at the moment

fair gull
#

@safe patrol linux hanst gone from 2.6 to 5

#

there were tons of versions inbetween

zenith sonnet
#

Urgh

#

PC is getting stuck on BIOS code 61 again...

fair gull

high def tux

zenith sonnet

Welp, BIOS reset itself...

fair gull

zenith sonnet

Now I'm stuck at Preparing Automatic Repair

Pls AMD

#

I want off this ride

reef patrol
#

Two weeks to take my OnePlus in for service to swap a battery under warranty. I am livid.

No wonder so many people sell their phones after a year. The swap takes maybe 15minutes tops

safe patrol
#

That sucks...

#

I stopped after OPTwo. The three started getting too pricy

reef patrol
#

My 6 was very fairly priced. Gonna sell it now just over a year in and buy a 7.

#

TWO WEEKS bcaWorking4 bcaWorking4 bcaWorking4

zenith sonnet

My 3 still going strong

reef patrol

It's just not fun to have 15% power when I get back from work every day. feelsbadman

desktops are exactly swapped between my monitors

#

Never seen that happen

#

Even the main taskbar swapped displays, every window stayed at the exact same coordinates

#

Weird

safe patrol
#

May I suggest a Doogee phone?

#

I have an S90 and love it

#

I just wish that USB consortium would get its head out of its ass, and STOP putting connectors on easily broken wafer thin bits of plastic in the -middle- of the connector. the one thing that I like about coworkers apple phone is that the contacts are on the outside of the plug.

chrome estuary
#

what the fuck

#

10000$?

fair gull
#

its modular thats why

#

BUT

#

its also doogee so i wouldnt buy it even for 400$

chrome estuary
#

modular can suck my ass

#

I'll pay $1400 or whatever for the LG V50 with the badass dual screen addon

fair gull
#

i mean its a placeholder price anyway

#

there isnt even a data sheet

chrome estuary
#

but why even 10k

#

why not TBA

#

or somethin

fair gull
#

cause their webstore is as shit as their phones

#

thats why

#

also convinced that a CAT phone is more rugged than any dogee phone

#

like CAT phones and tablets are literall bricks

fallow bison
reef patrol
zenith sonnet
#

God fucking damn it
This stupid rig

crude cipher
#

Lol

halcyon moss
#

lol

#

nice side effect of my new rig, is that minecraft modpacks launch significantly faster

halcyon moss
#

woah, sata hotspwap actually works 😮

wheat plume
#

oo

reef patrol
#

It is far from risk free though

halcyon moss
#

Hmmm

crimson wigeon
#

Well it is hotpluggable by design and that has always worked for me

#

Just remember to safely remove unless you're brave

reef patrol
#

Drive caching in OS like Windows need to be disabled for any hotplug drive. Otherwise you're begging for data loss

zenith sonnet
#

eject

reef patrol
#

Sure. But how often do anyone ACTUALLY eject their drives? 😆

zenith sonnet
#

Only by accident

#

It does exactly what Mansen mentioned

#

Make sure drive cache is clear

halcyon moss
#

and.. speed :p

reef patrol
#

Yep

halcyon moss
#

and responsiveness

pale sigil
#

Eh cache can be a killer

#

I put all my browser cache on my mechanical drive

halcyon moss
#

that sounds counter productive

zenith sonnet
#

Why would you do that?

#

But not infinite spins

#

My SSD from 2009 is still alive today, and it has a few TiB of writes

#

SSDs don't just wear out

#

Like, thousands of times

crimson wigeon
#

However the way modern systems work globally disabling all disk caching can cause slowness

sick creek
#

lol so

#

it's a really good thing i have massive problems with indecision

#

the 3800x went on sale on newegg and is only $40 more than the 3700x

#

so i'm just gonna get that because its basically a better binned 3700x lol

halcyon moss
#

that way you could say the 3700 is a better binned 3600 and is only $x more :p

sick creek
#

i wasnt gonna do it at 399 ¯_(ツ)_/¯

#

but at 369...

#

this is also why

#

3800x can hit 4.20ghz, more than likely 4.25ghz whereas the 3700x you have to get lucky to hit 4.15

#

on all cores**

zenith sonnet
#

Isn't the 3800X 4.5 GHz

sick creek
#

yes - but we're talking all-core max speed

ashen spindle
#

but you need to keep in mind that the new boost algo for ryzen is a bit different, it's not like you keep the single or all core boost all the time, so even if it can go higher that might result in <1% performance boost

sick creek
#

yes i understand that

zenith sonnet
#

You don't do all-core OC on those
Which limits you to the slowest core

sick creek
#

in any case, for $40 its a no brainer imo

zenith sonnet
#

True

sick creek
#

it's better silicon, period

zenith sonnet
#

True

sick creek
#

i'm bummed out that the lian-li o11 dynamic wont fit the noctua dh-15 or bq dark rock pro 4

zenith sonnet
#

Still waiting on that 3950X though

#

There's an O11 Dynamic Air

#

And an XL

sick creek
#

the air would have the same issue

#

i'll have to check the XL but i wasnt planning on a case that large

zenith sonnet
#

O11 Dynamic is good, but not the best case for pure air cooling

sick creek
#

i'm not gonna be using any mech hard drives this go-round

#

yeah i wanted to eventually do a hard loop water setup

#

but i also wanted good air cooling in the mean time

feral jolt
#

my buddy has a pretty nice 3800x he got 4.4 all core after weeks of tweaking

fair gull
#

4.4
laughs in i7 9thgen

feral jolt
#

they dont have the same ipc

#

i think zen 3 is going to overtake whatever intel can come up with

#

intel might be able to push 14nm 5% faster while amd is looking at bigger gains

ashen spindle
#

while I would like that I don't think so

#

the biggest performance zen2 got was from the branch predictor they added, which was pulled ahead from zen3 to zen2

zenith sonnet
#

Zen 3 gains will be small, they said probably less than 5%

#

Mostly they focus on efficiency and that stuff

feral jolt
#

Going to 8 core ccx with a huge cache and going to 7nm+ with more density and hopefully higher yields should make a bigger difference than under 5% imo.

ashen spindle
#

I dont see how using a smaller and new node increases yields, or what that does to performance

#

better bins come from better yields but not really something that increases perf

sick creek
#

Re-using my thermaltake water 3.0 aio, seasonic prime 850 platinum, and another 512 ssd

And 1080ti

old marlin
#

the lianli fans are crap

sick creek
#

¯_(ツ)_/¯

#

If they are i will return them

#

It was either those or the corsair LL fans and i liked the aluminum frame better on the lian-li

old marlin
#

corsair ll probably performs better

#

and is higher quality overall

sick creek
#

Haha. You wanna buy me some?

old marlin
#

nahhh

sick creek
#

$104 for 3 fans

#

Or $60 for 3

#

Ez choice.

#

I’m gonna run them at lowest rpm(900) but if the noise bothers me i will return and buy better ones

sick creek
#

oh another thing- the corsair fans dont have addressable rgb

#

the lian-li do

safe patrol
#

I have rubberized fans which are damn near silent 🙂

#

I dont remember them being so much

#

I am currently looking for CPU water cooling. Corsair?

lament wigeon
#

@safe patrol corsair AIO for sure

safe patrol
#

Awesome. I had the H60 in my wishlist already 🙂

sick creek
#

If you can fit the bequiet dark rock pro 4 or noctua nh-d15 then you can skip water

safe patrol
#

and an AMD AM3+ somethingorother xD

#

wow... the Dark rock pro 4 is more expensive than the Corsair water cooler

sick creek
#

You can check on pc part picker if they are compatible

old marlin
#

scale in what way?

fair gull
#

cause 500 is not the biggest/only single platter size

old marlin
#

uhh

#

atm I think 2TB?

#

not too sure

#

otherwise you'd have 24 platters in one of those 12TB drives

fair gull
#

4tb is the biggest rn

old marlin
#

or 32 in the 16TB drives

fair gull
#

with 2tb per side

#

20tb hdd is in the works tho

#

so we will see 5tb per platter

#

and 2.5 per side

old marlin
#

20TB is with MAMR and HAMR though

fair gull
#

ya

#

i think 16tb is also HAMR

old marlin
#

not too sure

#

it is a surveilance drive

fair gull
#

seagate ironwolf was hamr i think

#

their 16tb model that is

old marlin
#

not sure if there are any non 500gb single platter drives out there rn

fair gull
#

@proud nacelle ST1000LM035

#

1tb platter

#

single platter

#

keep in mind single platter != single head

#

this is a dualside platter

#

it is

#

if u wanna check out other manufacturers

old marlin
#

single side makes pretty much no sense tbh

fair gull
#

yep

#

that site has a ration in braces behind the model

old marlin
#

since a half size platter with 2 heads is cheaper

fair gull
#

1/2 is single platter 2 heads

#

why would u need to platter swap tho

old marlin
#

they ususally don't swap platters

fair gull
#

ya

old marlin
#

and if that happens it isn't your problem

#

unless you have a cleanroom at home

fair gull
#

a good recovery company can deal with allignment issues

#

they have special tools anyway

#

no

#

a good recovery comp has a stock of all hdd models

#

so theyd swap and also check for aligntment

#

which hint they know how to

#

like

#

hard to explain

#

lets just stay with the easy explanation: a serious data recovery company can ecover data from pmuch anything unless the platters are actually destroyed/ruined

old marlin
#

?

#

why

#

to reduce risk of failing?

fair gull
#

its either heat, electronic failure or a firmware corruption that kills ur drive

old marlin
#

well

#

too much heat on the wrong component kills it

#

but heat is the essential factor for HAMR and MAMR

fair gull
#

well heat isnt healthy for drives still even with hamr mamr

#

cause that only affects platters and very localised

#

ur hdd fails mostly due to the other parts failing

#

like the pcb or the read/write heads

pale sigil
#

Well when a mummy firmware gets together with a daddy firmware

#

But they are both related

#

It well

#

Causes much corruption

fair gull
#

@proud nacelle its not

#

its as unsafetl since the failure chance is the same for the head

#

my win7 installed 53/51 updates

wheat plume
#

O.o

fair gull
#

ya but each head has the same chance of failure

#

psure thats not how chances work

#

since they arent active simultaneously but rather in very very fast succession

#

that wont happen unless u live in an earthwuake area

#

or u carry around a spinning hdd

#

for multi hdds u use nas drives which can take the vibration

#

the chance of that happening btw is so small that it wouldnt matter if u have 6 or 2 heads

#

if u want actual safety go with ssds

#

much safer cause no heads

#

SLC flash and ure set

#

"only"

#

for flash thats pgood

#

and considering you cant have any platter failures

#

its the best use case

#

and usually (as the table also shows) the enterprise choice since its lasting longer and reading slightly faster

#

yes

#

and dont read/write important shit constantly

#

so dont put malware scanners or smth on it

#

well generates heat

#

heat kills electrical components

#

no exception

#

i mean if ur AV isnt too agressive and scans once an hour its prob fine

#

they also die of heat

#

games

#

music

#

why

#

those are easily recoverable through other means

#

if you want long term use magnetic tapes or cds

#

they last longer than an ssd in a shelf

#

your choice i wouldnt put smth unimportant like games on it tbh

#

like ar and family stuff and important docs ok

#

in that case id go cd/dvd

zenith sonnet
#

That list is missing QLC

#

Write on HDD, then power down and put on shelf

#

Better than DVDs

#

That's an issue for SSDs

#

Power it down for 2 years

#

And it'll be unreadable

#

That should work

fair gull
#

ya

#

works

#

anyway QLC is shit cause only like a few hundred erase cycles

#

before the cells are worn

#

@proud nacelle they do

#

power = spin

#

they just go into park and then come back after an hour or so

#

for a minute or 2

#

basically keeping the drive in idle

#

and ready to read/write

#

i mean when i test drives i plug in power by itself first to see if it actually spins and does the initial seek

#

usually its: power, spin, seek, wait a minute or 2, spin-down, idle

#

and then most manufacturers have another cycle of spin, wait a minute or 2, spin-down, idle

wheat plume

hm? I am using the Nord theme everywhere I can

I love it ❤

I use for gedit , intelliJ, my desktop theme, my web browser theme also

I wish there was a Nord global CSS I could use with Stylish to make every website use the Nord color theme

oh?

it easy ..what desktop?

wat

you use window manager?

do you control everything with keyboard shortcuts?

and each app is auto split into halves on the screen?

when you open them or take the fullscreen when there is only one app on the screen

ok, what OS you using?

oh if you have to manually snap windows then it isnt a window manager you are using, its a desktop

what OS?

yes I mean distro

can you screenshot neofetch for me

im so lost

how dont you know what you are using?

#

then what window manager?

#

ooof good good ok
if you install lxappearance you can set theme with that

#

oohh

#

then change style to gtk2

#

but themes still support gtk2

#

mostly for this reason -.-

#

ffs they need to update this QT integration

#

yeah :/ even GTK themes are just hacks at the css

#

cause gtk is styled with CSS afaik

#

this is the CSS for gnome shell

#

well...for this theme I am using anyway

#

I made the panel THICC by editing a property in the gnome-shell.css file

#

you mean a standard css file to base all themes off of?

#

wat?

#

nope

#

thats bs

#

you can use lxappearance and the QT5 config tool

#

to set the theme for gtk and QT

#

you can drop any themes you download into your ~/.themes folder

#

oo the default gnome theme

#

the most ugly theme in existance!

#

Not if there is something like Nord out there to use that is always coherent and a pleasent color palette!

#

i could look at this theme all day and it would not hurt my eyes like other dark themes do

#

ikr!

#

:'))

#

this is one of the best themes I have used so far

#

except that freaking sidebar on the file manager that isnt there on any other theme and it sucks

#

the one on the left with the icons

#

it isnt there on other themes and I hate it

#

but I love this theme enough to try to ignore this

#

:PP

#

wat?

#

oh, idk how ;-;

#

wat? I using IntelliJ

#

nu xd

#

I have never used Geany before

#

same

#

it is impossible to avoid long ass line when dealing with JOptionPane

#

-.-

#

o?

#

that did work!

#

to get rid of the line

#

yeah it does actually

#

lel yeh

#

I guess this makes sense, yo could write all the code along one line and it would still work

#

indeed.... at least I dont have to handwrite code, otherwise I would not be able to read it

#

well...we do in the exams -.-

#

Making an entire multi class java application is hard when its all freaking hand written

#

especially in 2 hours

#

shudders

#

imagine trying to do a handwritten exam in Piet

#

I see

#

It's fine! You helped me figure out what that like was called and how to get rid of it and I learned you can put code into the next line and it'll still work

Yup

I'm in school for this stuff

That rossman guy does so many things I've been trained not to do

I suppose it does work some decent % of the time and he does have most of the right equipment

plain locust
#

He has practical experience

#

but yea don't scrape the PCB with the god damn tweezers lmfao

feral jolt
#

I dunno I'm being trained more for manufacture than repair which is a lot cleaner of a process

plain locust
#

true

feral jolt
#

Its weird to see him leave all the grime on the boards. I've done repairs and always cleaned the board in ultrasonic alcohol making it a lot easier to see visible problems and various other improvements

plain locust
#

He prefers the grime on the board to see where the problem is

#

frankly doing it that way reduces the number of time you have to ultrasonic clean

#

also what I don't get is that wouldn't the cleaning process destroys whatever TIM is used on the board?

feral jolt
#

I haven't repaired a board with tim on it but that could be a good reason

#

I'm not that far along in my studies though, still have a lot to learn

sick creek
#

@plain locust yeah i already contacted him, just waiting to hear back lol

#

just thought i'd check my local area to see if anyone existed and well, probably not? haha

#

if he gets back to me and tells me to send it in, i'll do it, but if not it's gonna be put into a frame and go on my wall... cause why not. cpu is a 20th anniversary intel g3258

I wonder if my Xbox one mobo just needs a reflow thounking

sick creek
#

i want to know why m.2 sata is a thing

#

and why they arent all pci-e

#

i was trying to put my m.2 (sata, as i now know -- wasnt paying attention when i bought it apparently) into my other z97 machine and was trying everything to get it to work only to find out the asus maximus vii hero only supports m.2 pci-e

#

which makes sense i guess, but... irritating

thick elk
#

M.2 sata is a thing because it's cheaper / doesn't require the controller to be redesigned. Coupled with lower end ssd's the benefits of pcie are not that great so why not. I didn't know devices that didn't support sata over m.2 where a thing either.

feral jolt
#

Are you sure it's not a bios setting

#

My z170 asus bios has an option to run the m.2 in pcie or sata

ashen spindle
#

So the ps5 controller will have adjustable trigger resistance and haptic feedback. Clearly we now need a wooting 5 with the same features

fair gull
#

we didnt even have a wooting 3 yet

#

thats from the maximus hero vii z97

#

or did u just not check the manual/specs of your board and assumed it does both

sick creek
#

its an old board

#

my asrock z97 extreme6 supported both so i got lucky

#

but it died

#

so, never having used an m.2 in the vii hero, i didnt know til i tried

#

basically i'm moving my plex server over to a new rig that also happens to be z97

#

i bought an ngff to sata adapter

#

so it'll be fine

zenith sonnet
#

@reef patrol Thoughts on the MSI MEG x570 Unify? Also, what's the price on that thing?

sick creek
#

and @feral jolt yes i'm sure lol. i enabled m.2 mode but its pci-e only

reef patrol
#

Not a fan of the design personally. And it's very different visually to the Z390 version, which I have currently.

Haven't tried overclocking my 9900K on it though, so not sure how well the board performs. X570 is just pricy in general.

#

@zenith sonnet

zenith sonnet
#

Hmm

#

I'd probably look at Gigabyte or Asrock, but that one seemes interesting as well

feral jolt
#

Msi seems to be a real hit and miss company though I would recommend their MAX boards, it seems like theres better alternatives to almost all of their products

zenith sonnet
#

Aren't those just the same as the non-max ones, except that they cheaped out on the BIOS chips on those and had to rerelease them?

#

MSI is 95% miss and 5% Godlike, lol

feral jolt
#

The bios chips were the only issue yeah

#

Msi seems to cheap out on everything they can especially stuff the average dude doesn't think about like power phases and VRMs

#

And when they do add the nice power phases and VRMs its 500 dollars+ while the 160 dollar Asus prime has enough to handle 200 amps which is a 3950x at advertised boost speed

hey I said something about variable resistance switches being cool to be explored for future development and was brainstorming ways to make this happen while most people were like "nah its not possible" well I am glad my engineering experience has taught me to keep looking. I found this interesting info about the new 'dualshock 5' controllers made for the PS5 coming out in 2020. I think this offers a new potential for the further development of the lekker switch potentially and I am hyped for it. Still gonna get a current lekker switch board before this rolls out though, just hyped on it :)

here is the excerpt:
The controller (which history suggests will one day be called the DualShock 5, though Cerny just says "it doesn't have a name yet") does have some features Cerny's more interested in acknowledging. One is "adaptive triggers" that can offer varying levels of resistance to make shooting a bow and arrow feel like the real thing—the tension increasing as you pull the arrow back—or make a machine gun feel far different from a shotgun.

and here is the full article:

Now that the name is official, we've got more details about Sony's next-gen console—from the haptics-packed controller to UI improvements.

@fair gull Of course I did that a few times

I could maybe try an older BIOS version

fair gull

weird

i guess u tried swapping the ram around in the slots?

zenith sonnet
#

Eh, not exactly
Although it's random slots that appear empty, it changes after reboots, and it's on either side of the CPU (quad channel)

So, this makes no sense unless it's a central CPU component that's borked or a software issue

#

Or something completely unrelated?

I mean, the rig is as unstable as a pregnant woman, so...

Could be anything

And then it'll run fine for a few weeks again

fair gull
#

i have that aswell

zenith sonnet
#

Often it starts after Windows or driver updates...

fair gull
#

runs fine and at some points it literally freezes the whole system

no updates nothing

zenith sonnet

Maybe it's related to them pushing some microcode updates in the background?

fair gull

Then BIOS will reset
