#

Twitter I believe was the most recent example of bringing their app interface to desktop

ashen spindle
#

but there they just removed the desktop layout entirely

ashen spindle
#

but why are you making your window that small

chrome estuary
#

9:16 viewing?

ashen spindle
#

tried it on pcpartpicker and I like it, takes away the need to scroll to the side

#

ye I have 21:9 so it wouldnt happen for me

chrome estuary
#

i wanna buy a 21:9

#

and replace my right monitor with it

#

but i don't want 2560x1080

pale sigil
#

sam eventually

#

same

chrome estuary
#

I have 2 16:9

pale sigil
#

same

chrome estuary
#

actually 3 if you include the 4k tv up top.

#

same

pale sigil
#

cant help

#

be in the same situation

chrome estuary
#

S C R E E N

#

mine works fine

ashen spindle
#

no issue with it

chrome estuary
#

i fucking hate discord

#

Like when you've got it in a 9:16 layout with anything other than 100% font scaling...

ashen spindle
#

higher fov, a lot better than having a few cm of non-screen in the middle

#

one cable to connect and not two etc.

chrome estuary
#

It just creates a larger and larger void from latest message and text bar

#

like this has been an issue for so god damn long

#

yeah there is

#

drag the window to the corners of the screen

#

what

#

uh... I can't remember exactly how to do it but I've seen it before.

ashen spindle
#

same, I dont really know when I'd need it so I never tried but it should work?

chrome estuary
#

also LG fucking hates me

#

I want this so badly but it costs almost exactly as much as my Index did

zenith sonnet
chrome estuary
#

fuck your 1440p whatever hz bs

#

5120x2160 glory

#

look at this discord bullshit!

ashen spindle
#

uh, try not using the mode that cuts out profile pictures?

#

I've seen people have issues from that

chrome estuary
#

compact is best.

#

but this only happens when it's in 9:16 mode

crimson wigeon
#

Aww yeeahhh, and they said building interfaces with web technology would make it way better in every way

#

I also just flipped over to portrait orientation and am unable to repro

chrome estuary
#

repro?

crimson wigeon
#

Reproduce

chrome estuary
#

oh give it a bit.

#

sometimes it won't happen at all

#

sometimes it'll happen quickly

ashen spindle
#

maybe its me doing it

chrome estuary
#

some channels won't be affected at all, some will have massive spaces

#

it's completely fucking random

#

90 zoom, 90 font, compact is what my settings were

crimson wigeon
#

Although part of that might be me being a filthy Firefox user running this shit in a tab and Firefox doesn't render Discord 100% correctly for whatever reason...

chrome estuary
#

i'm using the actual app

crimson wigeon
#

And yeah I also use compact because why waste that much space on each message

chrome estuary
#

are you using compact in portrait with 90% zoom and font

#

because that's what i used and it gives me issues because discord is bad

ashen spindle
#

bc I have unused space on my 2nd monitor and it works better with emotes kek

chrome estuary
#

this has been on different installs and different OSes and versions and everything

crimson wigeon
#

Discord is very bad yes.. I'm a 100%er however

chrome estuary
#

this font is just too big and wastes so much space

#

only way I can to 100% font scaling is with 80% zoom

#

this is what happens. It doesn't load all messages or some shit and so the latest message is nearly half up the text box

#

zoom or font doesn't change it at all it seems

#

cozy or compact doesn't either

#

this is a discord bug they're too useless to fix

pale sigil
#

avatars add personality

#

so i dont like compact

crimson wigeon
#

OOoooooooooooooooooohhhhhhhh

#

Yeah they don't expect anyone to want to see that much at a time, beign modern developers

chrome estuary
#

i fucking guess, i've even contacted discord about this... it look like two months to finally get to the end of it but they know it's an issue

#

basically saying get fucked

crimson wigeon
#

Much like all the other things people have been wanting since this thing first came out...

#

But hey you can now go live!!!

chrome estuary
#

i wish i was still on a discord server with the actual developers and owner of this terrible program

#

because i'd just @ the bastard and say, "Hey dude, your app is broken."

crimson wigeon
#

heh

chrome estuary
#

but i'm pretty sure I'd rather drink acid then go back to the 'official' linux discord

crimson wigeon
#

I wonder if they'd still read my email if I replied to the "Welcome to the Discord Alpha Preview" email like they say

chrome estuary
#

haha

#

also i really hate it when windows thinks i want my 4k monitor to be 300% zoom

#

like fuck off, i want 100% scaling

#

i don't give a floppy shit if my 4k is actually a 4k 43" TV

zenith sonnet
#

It knows it's a TV and scales for a typical viewing distance

zenith sonnet
#

Omg yes, I want this

A bright room

#

Oh

#

It's just amazing to sit in a room with good CRI lighting

#

It has something of the feeling you get when you're outside, in the nature

#

Poor CRI makes you feel... supressed?

#

You'd be surprised how many things exist, you just don't know the technical details behind what you feel

zenith sonnet
#

It'll be like 50% brighter, and the light will be a lot better

earnest osprey

It would be really useful in say, far northern Alaska or Canada where there literally is no natural light for half the year

fickle ore

Those lamps are used to treat depression related to seasons

Pfff

#

Doesn't mean your indoor lighting is less than ours :p

#

Well, indoor lighting here and there should be pretty similar

#

Just get a bottle of Vitamin D3

#

Artificial lighting doesn't help with vitamin levels

#

Even down south where I live, sun is too weak between October and March for the body to produce Vitamin D at all

#

Is that even a real thing?

#

I actually enjoy gloomy light levels, unless I'm using the computer

In short, ground is always the base of a cricuit, ground is typically earth due to safety. But for the device it doesn't matter.
So the word ground is a bit messy, ground in the generally means typically earth because it's common that the devices are set to that, but for a device perspective it means the baseline of the potential of the circuit.

The reason why the ground of the devices are normally set to earth is so it has no potential, so you only need to take care not to touch the positive connections. So ground can be all over the device which makes the circuit much easier.

I dont want shitafone boxes

old marlin
#

#

their customer support is even worse

#

apparently worse than telekom

ashen spindle
#

I never really had issue with umedia, the few instances were solved fast and either from a broken modem or something on their end but even then only during night that I only noticed bc I was up till 4am

#

old telekom internet would stop working if there was thunder in a ~5km radius

zenith sonnet
#

I rarely had issues with Kabel Deutschland as well

#

About 80% of them were fixed by a technician exchanging the modem for a new one

#

Most of the time, the line is stable and speed is excellent

old marlin
#

I had some problems with umedia

#

like their shitty dns server

which crashes every night because it is also their update server

#

their loudaf horizon boxes

#

at least the newer ones

zenith sonnet
#

Lol

#

I've been using the vodafone DNS servers

#

Been fine so far

#

Only issue I have currently is an open ticket

#

Since February

#

That they identified as line fault (Netzfehler)

#

And is still open...

ashen spindle
#

I mean dns server isn't a big deal, it's quite easy to chane it to google/cloudflare

ashen spindle
#

ew

#

is that an app or a website? I've been looking for something to monitor my traffic that isn't as complex as wireshark

zenith sonnet
#

website

#

All it does is ping my connection, and summarize ping and packetloss into this image

ashen spindle
#

because I do sometimes have moments where my internet feels a bit slow for some apps/websites, but ping test to google is fine and I really cant read shit from the task manager ethernet graph

zenith sonnet
#

Try it

#

Just need an account, and it can monitor your connection

pale sigil
#

That’s nice

#

Compared to mine that’s stable af

ashen spindle
#

but can it see what the traffic is coming from or just total usage?

zenith sonnet
#

It doesn't see anything

#

All data they create themselves

ashen spindle
#

hrm might try it but I'm more looking for something where I can see where what program is using up/down bandwidth to see if its just chrome try to download too much or the connection itself

chrome estuary

i hate those kinds of keyboards

you use them a lot

dns settings

#

@ashen spindle

ashen spindle
#

I dont understand what you mean then

old marlin
#

so you use standard dns settings?

#

likely found your problem lol

#

google how to change dns on your router

#

and set it to
8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4

ashen spindle
#

why on my router, should it not be the same if I do that via Ethernet Properties?

old marlin
#

you can do it via ethernet properties

#

but your router will change it for your phone etc too

pale sigil
#

Split keyboards are awesome

#

Just that one isn’t

old marlin
#

the shape is familiar

ashen spindle
#

but neither cloudflare nor google dns fixed the small slowdowns I sometimes have, already tried that

old marlin
#

rip

ashen spindle
#

its not bad, just annoying sometimes, but not happening much

#

just would like to know what causes it

chrome estuary
#

split keyboards are bad and so are you

#

Full keyboard master race

#

anything less and you're losing features for nothing

old marlin
#

ehhh

#

1800 layout

chrome estuary
#

IBM didn't sacrifice children to make a good keyboard for us to do stupid shit like remove features

pale sigil
#

Shhh

#

You don’t have to buy one

old marlin
#

ok

#

what features are removed?

chrome estuary
#

numpad

old marlin
#

a well designed 1800 layout board has everything

#

including numpad

#

sacrifices wasted space to make it more compact

#

didn't take off for mainstream boards unfortunatley

#

even though it can easily be shrunken to tkl size

thick elk
#

I do like my separate numpad though but for a gaming keyboard I really don't want one on the right side

reef patrol
#

Numpad or death.

reef patrol
chrome estuary
#

ugh, separate numpad

#

it's like you want to waste even more space than you're 'saving'

thick elk
#

I have enough space on my desk I just don't want to have to move my keyboard to be even more off-center. (my desk is 3.2m wide anyway)

zenith sonnet
#

Might be better than the LG if it doesn't use that same old AU Optrinics panel any more...

thick elk
#

you also have the vg271up varient with the same panel a lower price but a garbage stand. For the price difference you can get a much nicer desk mount anyway

zenith sonnet
#

Seen the review

#

Overdrive is crap

pale sigil
#

OneDrive

#

i heard one drive

#

blasphemy

#

dont mention that name again 👀

ashen spindle
#

TwoDrive

zenith sonnet
#

@thick elk Reason I haven't bought the Aorus AD27QD, which seems to be superior to the Asus VG27AQ, is the same panel/overdrive issues

#

They all use the 4 year old AU Optrinics panel
Which is just a bit too slow for 144Hz

#

And nobody manages to make an overdrive curve that fits a decent portion of the VRR range

#

You need to either stay solid above 120, below 80, or in the 80-120 range for it to work well

#

Which just isn't possible

#

The new LG 27GL850 has an overdrive setting that covers the whole VRR range without overshoot, and it's faster than any AU Optrinics panel based monitor

zenith sonnet
#

Nice

thick elk
#

Does the lg panel have backlight strobing as that is kind of a must for me. It working with vrr certainly seems interesting. Also I probably mostly use the >100 hz part of vrr

zenith sonnet
#

@thick elk What are you mostly playing?

#

If you make little use of the entire VRR range, and mostly play at steady framerates, there might be other options

thick elk
#

Mostly overwatch as my main comp game. But I do sometimes play more demanding games as well. Just always happy turn down a few settings to get to a higher framerate. VRR is mostly for framerate dips

#

I just want a decent backlight strobing ips panel that doesn't depend on nvidea lockin garbage

zenith sonnet
#

Turning down settings doesn't always work

#

BL2 will dip below 50 occasionally, no matter what I do, for example

thick elk
#

Fair it is still a matter of how often it happens and really most games work fine most of the time on a 8700k @5ghz

#

Most of my playtime is overwatch anyway

zenith sonnet
#

If you can stay >120Hz almost all the time (overwatch should work), then the Aorus AD27QD is a good choice

The new LG panel is the fastest IPS on the market though, and might benefit you more for competitive gaming, even at a stable >120 FPS

#

It's faster than some 240Hz TN film panels, so that's something

#

The only drawbacks of it are poorer static contrast, and a few less features

crimson wigeon
#

JavaScript

#

Makes sense

glad scroll
#

Ads in terminal, the fuck? 02Think

thick elk
#

@zenith sonnet but does the lg offer a good implementation of backlight strobing as that is pretty much a must for me. I know the aorus one is pretty bad on that front

zenith sonnet
#

It doesn't

#

But it sorta doesn't need it, either

thick elk
#

From what I know the blur it tends to solve mostly stems from the way our eyes precieve motion. which would really only otherwise be solvable with much higher refresh rates

It's sorta.. flawed? He'd have to control for cooling and discard any results with >55°C of CPU temp

#

Hell, if you use LN2, it'll still boost higher

ashen spindle
#

??? thats not what they advertised or what they are saying should be going on

zenith sonnet
#

Well, temp plays a huge role

reef patrol
#

Not really. It should hit that at some point with the stock cooler. Anything else is shady af 😄

zenith sonnet
#

And going above 60°C reduces your boost clocks

ashen spindle
#

imagine the outcry if a new intel cpu would only hit 4.9 instead of an advertised 5.0 with boost unless you put an liquid cooler on it....

reef patrol

If you can't even force it in a controlled environment using stock parts, it's an issue.

Micron e-die is the next best alternative after Samsung b-die

if you get a 3000 rated crucial ballistix kit you can assume you can most likely get it to 3733 and max out 1-1 timings

They were never intended to be pulled out. She uses them at home at a desktop. 🙂

#

And sure - I guess I should be grateful that they choose to put in a 2,5mm connector, instead of the cable going inside. But they could at least use a less thin cable for it. Had to strip down a standard 2,5mm to the wire, and then tape it up to make it fit inside of the connector hole.

Perfect fit though.

reef patrol
ashen spindle

Im on Intel so i won’t get that much and thus I’m not pushing for too much, but I felt I can definitely put this higher than 2133 kek

#

Have it on 3000 now and doing a memtest, then see if I see any improvement in a benchmark

zenith sonnet
#

To bad the new Trident Z Royal kits are announced for Q4 2019

#

Still a wait

#

Then again, not sure if it's the best choice

#

I'm not gonna make use of the 4000 Mhz, but I can probably tighten the timings when I go down to 3733 or so?

ashen spindle
#

Hard to say, they aren’t directly linearly related

#

Also at 3000 mine did not like tighter timings so I had to reset cmos

#

Time to try again and see if it runs memtest and timespy and I’m done

#

3000 cl18 seems to be stable, timespy worked, got higher scores, now to run memtest to make sure its stable

how can fine tunin be avoided, especially for multiple architechtures?

#

I'm no really convinced that would fix everything, I cant see the compiler always knowing what I want to do and what exact optimization I want, or maybe writing something for one arch will just always be better so I'd need two variants because let's say x86 always does the integer math better than the other arch

reef patrol
#

Reviewers don't want to have to buy things. Especially not if they want their reviews out by NDA clear.

#

It's not uncommon to receive samples as much as a week or two, or at least a couple days early, because benchmarks and OC takes a long time to do and write up.

#

I don't remember if it was 3000 series or the 5700, but one of our testers spent an entire weekend getting our review ready.

ashen spindle
#

oh yeah but I dont think intel really needs/wants reviewers on the KS since it's effectively better binned 9900k cpus that they take an extra margin on, and most reviwers already sady the 9900k is the best for /only/ gaming

#

since I'd imagine a lot would say "get a normal 9900k and spend 5 minutes Oc'ing it"

old marlin
#

not all of them can do 5.0 all core

ashen spindle
#

yes but no game gets any benefits from that either

zenith sonnet
#

Give AMD/MS a little more time to improve AGESA and the Windows scheduler, and I think intel will lose what little performance benefit they have

thick elk
#

For a lot of people ocing is not something they are going to do.

zenith sonnet
#

@reef patrol And then there's sites that specifically test retail samples

ashen spindle
#

yes but I expect people who buy a 9900k(S) and don't oc at all are in the category that won't really watch reviewers anyway

#

for me it just looks like intel doesn't really gain anything from sending samples of it to reviewers which is why I can see them not doing it

reef patrol
#

There are - But those are a very different breed of reviewer.

#

Most reviewers care about being relevant - And that means having your review ready by the time you're allowed to post one.

Everyone past that are either late to the views, or they do something very different - like testing a wide sample size to see if there is reviewer bias and such.

ashen spindle
#

yes but why does intel care if the reviewers want it if intel doesn't? :p

reef patrol
#

Intel ultimately wants free/cheap PR, and having the YT reviewers post reviews at ETA 0:00 helps.

ashen spindle
#

well, it is pr sure, but is it pr they want if (what I'd expect to happen) every reviewer would say don't buy it unless you want a golden bin version?

reef patrol
#

That is a risk - But refusing samples at all might cause a similar "WAIT...WTF" reaction from customers.

#

If you won't offer review samples, that tells a very specific story

ashen spindle
#

could just say it's limited stock like with the 8086k and they want it in the hands of actual gamers not reviewers 🤷

#

we'll see what's happening when it comes to that date

reef patrol
#

It isn't limited though 😄

ashen spindle

I guess intel just having the biggest fps number on review charts by a bit more might be enough to consider it good pr

zenith sonnet

@ashen spindle I think they meant that you can achieve 25-50MHz more than the rated boost clock of the procesor

ashen spindle
#

erm no, they are implying that's what most people were missing from the advertised boost clock

zenith sonnet

Some users have been reporting that they saw speeds of 4625-4650 on a 3900X, or 4450 on a 3700X

you might also get more if you were already hitting the target but this is clearly a fix to hit the advertised clocks

ashen spindle
#

yeah but what about temps, voltage etc. wonder if it would be stable longterm

latent mural

It might only work on custom cards where the XT and non-XT have the same PCB.

#

Flashing is what increases the voltage limit. The 4 less CUs stays the same

#

stable, a little better temps than XT

#

It's the same as how Vega flashing was where it doesn't unlock the CUs but it increases voltage limits. But yeah, die quality might not be better. At the same time, sometimes die quality is BETTER because the 4 worst CUs were disabled. And Red Devil 5700 probably have binned dies to begin with.
