vsync is vertical synchronization

vsync isn't a standard either tbh

lots of games implement it differently

I know in source engine games, vsync could increase your framerate by prerendering frames or something iirc

other people use variable resolution

which just means it lowers the render scaling based off of the current framerate

others change graphics settings dynamically by lazy loading textures and such, based off of the current framerate

triple buffering works really well to eliminate tearing, by having three buffers instead of two, meaning your computer has twice as much time to create a frame before it gets sent to your screen

eliminates tearing 100%, but the downside is it adds latency

if I'm running at 144hz, triple buffering adds 7ms, 60hz adds 17ms

which is granted quite a bit

gsync and freesync work by synchronizing your framerate between your monitor and your gpu, and synchronizing when they refresh

this is typically the best solution as well, but this can cause major issues if you're not playing in fullscreen

and some monitors don't play well with games hardlocked at different framerates

ie I can't use gsync on 60hz games on my 144hz monitor, because it will start flickering really bad

the easiest way to stop tearing is to cap your framerate. while this doesn't solve the issue as well as every other option, it doesn't have any realistic drawbacks
