it's far cheaper to get a microcontroller with huge input muxes for the ADCs than external ADCs with many channels, for some reason
More precise, more niche.
yeah. those mcus can run at 5 bit, not many discrete ADCs do
not likely. 12 or 14 probably, tends to be enough for rotaries e.g. from Austrian Micro Systems or Melexis
... though it's likely the sensors in there are much cheaper than those
Yeah, could just be software.
I do recall getting 16 bit values.
Now if only the chat pad had support. :V
random controller trivia: the Sixaxis controller reports analogue values for its rubber dome push buttons. It is pressure sensitive, though AFAIK no game ever used the data.
Same with the Xbox controller if I recall.
Yeah, PS2 controllers also do that
But later models just did on/off I believe.
The things you learn trying to make a thing work on your computer.
disappointingly, the Nolo controller trigger doesn't seem to have an analog range at all; it just has the bottom tactile click.
also, the leads on the '503 hall effect sensors I have are too short to reach the bottom in my rough draft of a switch housing.
That's annoying.
it will need some sort of workaround if I move up to multiple switches. well, I can make a row with all leads sticking out the side
Lead trimmings?
I have to connect all 3 leads. ground, power, and signal. signal will be individual per switch. I might end up making power rails per row of switches and scan the power
for the moment, though, I think making one printed housing that slides properly would be neat
(and surprising, considering the quality of my printer)
I meant to extend the length of the leads.
ah, as in leftover lead pieces. yeah, but it's twice the soldering and I don't happen to have that much left over, this is my only big project
Ah, gotcha.
My big hardware project is taking a while, partially because it's a bit of a learning curve and partly because I need to make most of the components in KiCAD. :V
@haughty condor New layout
Click profile
Click dark theme
I still cant find dark theme on my youtube
ye my better discord theme bugs that out lol
Many people complain that light mode is too bright, in the dark but why are you using it in the dark, go to sleep or turn on you lights, you weirdo I think everyone should use light mode on discord i have been using for almost a week and know don't understand why this isn't the default the light mode is unique in the way that it makes you feel almost like an oreo, the sidebar is black the rest is white colours are more prominent and they look beautiful, a clear result of careful ui by the developers they have carefully handcrafted each hex colour with the decision to make light mode the best the text at first I wished was darker but know i appreciate the aesthetic easy on the eyes font colour The other sidebar with the users on the right is a slightly darker off white colour truelly a master stroke making it easy on the eyes Many people complain that light mode is too bright, in the dark but why are you using it in the dark, go to sleep or turn on you lights, you weirdo
I can't tell if that's a joke or a real comment
I'm disappointed there is no dark mode for Andriod Oreo....4.4.4 was fine, nice and dark...but from 5.0 and up its been white
just theme it
there's a dark mode switch in Android 9.0
Yeah, with Pie the interface can always be dark mode. Wish it affected the settings app though.
This is what I use. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.brit.swiftblack.layers

jesus christ
nailed it
Nice font.
Had that a while back on a customer's pc. It couldn't find any fonts, so it defaulted to that.
LOL
Better than crashing, you can at least do something with it.
I mean, some programmer at Microsoft made that feature and knew something like this would happen one day
@iron wave damn, thanks, bought the dark one
Aww yiss! Gameboy clone meets Lego/Model Kit/Warhammer.

got a link for that @reef patrol ?
It's a kickstarter that ended recently. Should be in stores soon ish
Look for Clockwork Gameshell. π
Can't wait to build it π

finally fond a way to turn youtube dark mode on again
if you are not logged in, it still shows you teh settings menu so I just don't log in for youtube lmao
non dark mode even "broke" expanded view for me so I'll just never login on youtube again
Don't you love it when your IDE has a strange bug that only applies to your very narrow use case and causes you to not be able to progress?
Dark mode works for me logged in
yeah but if it goes away I'd have to log out again, no options for me if I'm logged in since a few days ago
How odd.
new layout apaprently, but it's almost like the old except settings are hidden and I just cand find them anywhere
YouTube's team is kind of mean.
You've upset the dev gods and now they're punishing your account specifically.
Haha.
just tell youtube you're using ie11
it will use the old old layout
no changes whatsoever
not even dark theme
@ashen spindle
It seems I tagged the wrong person
But I did show a screenshot on how to do it
small progress. I have a functional but fragile, scratchy and unstable 3d printed prototype of my switch. making some design changes to make it interlock rather than pop apart on key return.
the other issues are basically down to print quality
My printer is junky.
I can't be the only person that thinks "what is the API like?" when they see a neat piece of hardware.
nope you're not
.....not bad
I managed to get like 600MHz on all stock voltage on my CPU.
I had to put my 4770k to 1.47v to get it stable at 4.5Ghz π’
that was nuts though so I dialed it back to 1.43v so I can enjoy my sweet 4.3Ghz
dang. I think my 4690k went to 4.5 with stock voltage
Got to love the lotto.
I was stable at +600MHz for months then I bumped up the RAM one notch then couldn't get it again and had to reset the BIOS.
6600k went to 4.3 on stock
But i cant overclock since my system is stable and i dont have any extra power left in my psu...any overclock makes the systen unstable
Something that bugs me to no end is the horrible networking capabilities of modern consoles.
I'm doing 3,8ghz on release date r7 1700, I am ok with this
Thanks @reef patrol got one of those Gameboy clones coming
Nice! Put mine together while waiting for my plane to land.
Enjoying the DIY and modular bit, but it's not an awesome Gameboy...yet. The ABXY keys get stuck down, and I'm not sure if it's me or the kit. Waiting for some manufacturer and forum feedback.
The shoulder button add-on could also use some work. Much too bulky.
has anyone experienced a good and bad HDR tv?
wants to know if is missing anything at all
is stuck on DSL
HDR is nice.
maybe it doesn't practically work on edge lit screens
idk if there really is aa baad HDR screen
maybe one that's not calibrated good out of the box
I'd prefer OLED overall for any HDR stuff tbh
well i'm not the kind of person that would pay 2-3k for a tv
meanwhile spending like 1k per year on audio
LOL
well i've just been on a streak..
in audio when you get something good it can mostly be as good as it gets
so you've been going all out?
now just to spend 300 euro + time on acoustic treatment
No i mean there is an end in sight
video tech can be upgraded for ever
as in atmos?
optical or whichever
Please describe your problem
I want to get a 7.1 signal to my amp so I can use my surround setup
but so far, I only have uncompressed optical, and the typical sound connectors
amp/receiver only accepts dolby then?
what sound card do you have
a cheapo asus one, xonar dg or something
should be a simple connect to optical out
afaik most optical sound output on PCs is uncompressed, which is just 2 ch
still doesn't work
or at least since the last time I tried
I did some deep digging and watched some videos, and they all pointed towards the same thing
only the expensive sound blaster cards or whichever actually support encoded optical out
is there a way to get that into something my amp can take?
what's your amp?
sony str-dg720
it has many an hdmi
tried that?
yes
OH
okay you just made me remember something
so
I'd been using hdmi before with some really weird TV
because windows detects as second display
but between the amp and the shitty TV, it would crank like 500ms response times
now im using a different monitor with DP
so I could go back to hdmi and see what I can work out
any tips for getting windows to not treat the HDMI like another display?
i think you can simply just disable the screen in windows while keeping the audio
hard to check for me at the moment
othewise, simply setting the screen to Clone will take no gpu resources
can I clone one display but extend another?
as in you have 3 screens?
well i think when i tried win10 and had 2 screens, 3 would not work only via eyefinity
kinda what I thought
and the gpu driver decides if you can have audio
unlesss
are you running an intel? :p
one time I got away with making the resolution as small as it would go, then put it in the bottom corner
gtx 1060
integrated is for scrubs ecks dee
I mean yea
the intel hd graphics custom resolution program is pretty anal tho
brb gotta get ready for work
l;emme try
i remember most of my realteks with optical out supporting dolby 5.1 through optical
alternatively via a big mess you could just encode it in software
Got slapped with 1803 update...it still reeezes for a bit when switching to a full screen application where as 1709 does not....has anyone else experienced this?
Short pauses when alt tabbing full screen apps have always been normal. If you didn't have that, you were an anomaly
@reef patrol i dont have them in 1709...the game keeps running with no pauses
Yeah in 1709 that fancy mode that let borderless window basically be like exclusive fullscreen worked perfectly, then they broke it in 1803 and never fixed it since
oops
Never had any kind of pauses with non exclusive full screen.
And yeah as an insider I can say.. it's still not working..
I miss that mode so much, having to use exclusive fullscreen and all the weirdness that brings sucks
I still miss the original Windows 10 starm meu
I really dont understand that issue. I have NEVER had delays when non exclusive full screen apps. EXCLUSIVE apps on the other hand. Always delays due to rerender
Yeah that's the point, before 1803 ruined everything I could set most games to just borderless fullscreen window and it would bypass the compositor and all that jazz, now I have to go exclusive to get that
I still don't follow.
Ok
You sure? Windows composition is forced since windows 8. non-exclusive programs are always double buffered. Exclusive fullscreen is the only way to get rid of desktop "vsync"
Exclusive Fullscreen programs run at higher fps aswell
Correct, however for a while fullscreen borderless windowed games did bypass the compositor.. that is until 1803. This is what that "fullscreen optimizations" did
Only in some cases, nagga. Plenty of games run faster in windowed.
No π
Feel free to Google it. Plenty of comparisons π
Also more importantly. Having to wait seconds to tsb back and forth is downright criminal in the age of multitasking with s browser π
rip windoge....it truly is a meme of an operating system now
ngh, it was a new presentation model, dunno if I would call it borderless mode
Did they really remove that?
Well it does appear to still be in use, only for UWP stuff.. and when stuff's in exclusive fullscreen mode which causes other problems
... perhaps it's intentional because some weirdos love the forced vsync in non-exclusive fullscreen
maybe u need to enable game mode for it to work?
Yeah I'm beginning to hate w10 with passion, it's getting so many useless features. Someone needs to make performance/oc/gaming OS
It's very bloated aswell and all the damn spyware. I saw a test with all the crap disabled, the min fps and 1%s and 0,1%s were a lot better
Wish I could also disable the stupid compositor like in W7
Yeah, unfortunately all the new stuff depends on it
i really miss the original windows 10 start
Mine looks like that normally?
no it doesn;t
Congratulations you haven't updated
Nah, that's not it
was simlar
having the left-hand text always visible would be nice
I just use a fullscreen start menu though
whats different?
Yeah that's the very first one
Ye
it was so much better
even search was far supperior
but we didn't have cortana i guess
WATCH THE NEW RTM DEMO: http://bit.ly/1OPDPEK CHECK OUT OUR NEW WINDOWS 10 DEMO (9926 January Technical Preview): http://bit.ly/1CLGM2J Learn about Windows 1...
it wasn't perfect but it was far supperior
it annoys me because microsoft are slowly trying to remove the older functions such as control panel, volume settings etc
No ones likes settings π
Oh come on settings is great!
xD please dont trigger me
Who doesn't like inefficient usage of space?
Also being locked to just one window, which is another general trend I hate. Why do developers suddenly have a hatred for multiple windows?
devs hate everyone
I canβt remember the last time I used the start menu
Sure, I hit the winkey and start typing, but thatβs not using the start menu, thatβs search
Even before 10 tbh
Probs itβs just me, cause Iβm mainly a macOS user
meh
So I find the start menu completely redundant
But i still like the old looks
im just happy the shitty tiles option can be turned off
i dont have a problem with the new start menu
albert is perfection
lol
This program helps with finding applications and files on Linux
OH OH OH
Executor a multi purpose launcher and windows run replacement
rainmeter instead?
haven't used that in many years
A multi-lens and multi-sensor camera. The camera has 16 camera modules designed to capture 52MP images using multiple apertures.
Man I'm psyched to get this to review
Compiz is best desktop
Spin that cuuuuubeeeeeee
i say that somewhere.....is it actually any good?
control panel etc is still there, accessible the same way you should as IT pro since 95
@pale sigil
everything is still accessible using search
idk why everyone is hating on windows 10, i like it
because it's fun to hate microsoft
i only use the start menu for search as soon as it appeared
the "problem" is that the first settings result can often not be what it used to be , it's in the new interface instead
you cant completely disable telemetry, the automatic updates are a piece of shit that sometimes update while you take a 5 minute break to get something etc.
I use it and like it but it has some really annoying issues
set your network to metered
and/or use win Pro and run the business update branch
and/or forbid updates via windows firewal
running Pro and doesn't get restarts
you could probably force it to suspend restarts with a simple program too
yeah but you'd need a different one for every big update probably
no
I know there are ways around most of it, but if I need to do more than flip a settings switch it's just a pain in the ass and a valid reason to dislike it imo
I dont think so. I can perfectly see why microsoft did it, with their what was is... 48! windows versions still in support
update all the home users
less work for me when my relatives computers have problems
ok, updates are one part , there is still telemetry etc., and if I wouldn't need win10 I'd still be on Win7 because it doesnt have all this crap
any telemetry paranoia is fixed with a firewall
yeah, or just have an option to disable it
I shouldnt be required to know a lot about a computer and do extra work if its not needed
It's their product, it's their decision. Your decision is to use their product or not
it gives them good data, im perfectly fine with this
it's not just for the heck of it
it's not really my decision if it's the only product availible where everything I need works on lmao
you can't have everything you want in someone else's product
so just save the time and embrace it or actively do something about it
I do, doesn't mean I can't call it bullshit if something is bullshit
it really isn't bullshit
It's not REALLY your decision, when Microsoft forces the 10 upgrade π
Honestly, never experienced that
had to cheat into the free upgrade for win7 diehards far more often
(you can still upgrade for free)
I've had it happen more times than I care to remember.
i dunno, never happened to me, (this includes the huge amount of people who's computers i set up)
dunno what's the magic
huge being like 20 ( who i know did not get it installed)
Do you guys disable wlan&remote management on your router/modem?
no, have a laptop that has no LAN port so I need WLAN
the internet says that this tv should be ok for hdr, even though it's edge lit, because quantum nanoprobes TM or something
maybe youtube's hdr is... bad
Youtube in general is bad
I have a usb stick of with an hdr movie and a 1030 (has hdmi 2.0, ..i think) coming to me in the evening
will see if i can get it to work
well netflix is a no go, unless it's a netflix series it's not even hd for me
maybe amazon prime....
Or get a USB to LAN adaptor π€
huh, interesting, when using a dedicated device (like a smart tv) then i actually get most netflix stuff that i can access in hd/hdr/dolby vision
dolby vision seems to work better than the thing youtube uses "HDR something".. maybe
kind of just looks like no ridiculous amounts of colour filters and bright things being brighter
@latent mural I know that lmao
I'm just saying they are slowly trying to make it irrelivent
Putting a lot of it in the windows 10 settings
@misty saffron I like windows 10 a lot I just hate how they keep trying to remove what doesn't need to be removed
I also hate the amount of shit installed and privacy issues
@ashen spindle @reef patrol the only way to stop major upgrades is uninstalling, I had a huge issue with my laptop not installing updates and restoring windows due to grub, I had to uninstall the update. I ended up removing windows entirely instead
not a viable solution if you need to work on win 10 π
ew mac
Linux
fite me
Starting to get super worried
My CPU usage is high af lately
and my games keep acting up
Windows is updating
I see
but my point still stands
idk whats going on with it lately
going to do some diagnostics i guess!
candy crush v1, 2 and 3?
and i have no doubt it helps sell the laptop
i installed win10 pro a week ago, only had 2 or 3 candy crushes
Windows now makes you have security questions for offline accounts -_-
its new
nope, I'm using pro and have most of it, they add new stuff in never version if you do clean installs of them
You can bypass it via making the account without a password first
i was adding a second account btw
nope
it says "microsoft account"
maybe it isn't | ( Ν‘Β° ΝΚ Ν‘Β°)
You don't need passwords for offline. Thankfully.
Lol
(exept for some sort of virus using an exploit...but i have yet to have that happen)
rip
are they actually installed or just ads for those things
cuz when they first did that crap they were just ads
which is still gross
installed
installed
only candy crush and it's versions were installed for me (fresh install)
else were adds
tbf I directly uninstalled everything before I looked what it showed me in there
@pale sigil have you looked at windows lite?
I do dislike the ~15 prgorams that come with Windows that will reinstall behind your back sometimes.
lol why would i
I think Discord needs to support APNG.
its an illegal rebuild of windows...without all of the garbage
I do not want to touch that.
i has litteraly nothing
i would rather avoid torrenting it, i have used it before for VMs
dont try the N version
I have that and I wish I would have the normal version
i know...but still, fuck Microsoft for all of that telemetry
i'm more annoyed by google mapping all the wifis in the city and then showing my last location on my google account
if i ever get my account stolen they know where i live, where i work, where i am
they would know that already if they wanted to kill you
blep
alright, got the 1030
hdr works i guess, so does 4k@60hz
colours as odd as you expect them to be
why 1030
is a 1050 even worth buying since there are now 3 versions of the same chipset
it's worth buying if the curtent gpu prices don't plan to go down
i thought about buying a 480 2 years ago for 350
but decided to wait as i wasn't in an incredible need of a gpu then
kind of kills the desire of getting practically the same thing now for 420
yeah
the one oi planned top buy costed 420 anyway
i lost no money
just waited a year and a half
most 1st world problem of the day: the subpixels are so small and oddly shaped that i cant tell if there is a white subpixel or not
if i zoom it in with a phone the bright colours just blend together and i get a e.g. a yellow subpixel
1050 is not worth buying no
i did say 1050ti lp, it has it's specific use case
even then...i would say 1050 chipset is not worth buying
no video card is now by that mark
.even so
like i would always avoid a 1060 3gb suggestion
but if someone is really going for a 1050ti
i would just suggest 1060 3gb
1060 doesn't come in low profile
if u planning on gaming....you dont want anything lower than a 1060 or 480/580
but its costs an arm and a leg more
for a reaosn
its like a 10% diff in perf(unless you run out of vram lol)
No
not worth losing your mind over
The chip itself is different
its cut down
and it comes to about a 10%~ difference in performance
for the 3gb model vs the 6gb
Oh poo, this is a RGBW pattern after all. Funny, couldn't possibly notice the difference at the store
classic nvidia
Even so the low vram is not worth it
the difference is huge man
especially in games
most games you'll never notice but the few you do will be brutal
its not a smart amount of vram in 2018
i think you need to look this up man
I used to do nothing but watch video card reviews and read articles
its a fine gpu until you run out of vram then its shitty
the business model around it is shittier than the actual gpu
it just makes no sense in general
to get a 3gb one
you're not just paying more for vram
Everyone i have encouraged to save up all dont regret it
and are thankful of it
the 1060 3gb is just a money maker
you have a skewed perspective on the difference between the cards my dude
only the 1060 3gb and 6gb
thats my only issue
In my eyes, get a 1060 6gb or a last gen card
more value for your money
it just depends what someone is doing tbh
Well i mean.
what games they're playing at what res and what framerates they're targeting
You're still going to save getting a last gen card if you go for a 1050ti
no matter what
tbf tho the market has gone down nicely
thats pretty solid across the board though
used 980ti is a better buy than any 1060
etc
i just think its not worth the money buying a 1050ti
1060 6gb/1070 onwards i think is good depending on the gpu you'e coming form
*from
thats another factor i guess
what gpu you're coming form
*from
sorry, im trying to play GOW at the same time
i wont deny there are some flaws in my argument, i have the mindset of if you want a gaming rig you may as well get the best for your money.
I'm never going to buy anything LG every again
and never buy anything LG for anyone i know
that'll show... me
cries
the white pixel is the same size as the other subpixels
that's a catastrophic difference
If it were at least bigger then some software magic could make it just ok
1 wide pixel -> 1 tiny pixel -> wide -> tiny >wide ->tiny
then what was the point of this nanocell/quantom dot mumbo jumbo then, it's not even there, is it...
the white pixel was to increase the brightness and cheat into HDR certification on their budget tvs, this is not a budget tv
LG are horrible, horrible people
Leave my tv alone
i saw that lg rocks
And this is that situation when you should get a 1050ti low profile
it's when you ragequit gaming and pursue other digital hobbies
I only got a 4k screen to show guis, but decided to get specifically this one for gaming, turns out i've been lied to about it, so i've gone full circle
heh
1050 wont last you very long....medeum to low setting atm will be low settings in the future
Not much point in buying older cards at this point, unless you get a REALLY good deal.
Anyone here use an otg cable with their iPad or iPhone
I have no idea what that even is π€
@pale sigil friend used to...but they jailbrke their stuff
@reef patrol
I have a 960 right now. :V
I've been thinking about the thermal performance of my laptop lately. It seems to stay hot for the most part, any ideas?
How old is it?
age? (no idea) maybe gunked up fans, heat sync has crap in it.....
Aside from the usual ideas of cleaning fans with a compressor and swapping thermal paste... One of those laptop cooler pads?
set power options for active cooling (spin up the fans before thermal throttling)
@reef patrol do those laptop cooling pads even work? afaik laptops draw air in from the bottom and throw it out the side
Depends on the laptop. Typical pads push air up into the bottom of the laptop.
.....unless its a macbook... Then there's no help for u
My laptop runs at 90Β°C for hours on end...it still works 3 years later some how
for a standard properly fanned laptop the cooling pad can be replaced by 2-4 erasers that wilp lift the laptop higher
yep, fans need access to air to create airflow. my main gaming machine is standing on some lego pieces so the power supply gets enough air.
Oh sorry.
Busy.
There is air flow, but I have no idea how old it is.
Found it in the trash like a year ago and fixed it.
Anyone happen to have a fairly concise document on how the AMD VM instructions work?
will be waiting for CES next year to see if there are any 120hz 4k freesync tvs

that thing is 2016!
it's 2018 already
I don't like smart displays.
think it wouild be worth buying a replacement batter for my old oneplus one?
So erm
Discord allows you to apply to receive all the data kept on you
Takes a few days
But I have every single message, personal info, info of all friends and conversations with them, machine data and a bunch of other stuff π
@pale sigil dumps are missing some data
@misty saffron aye I read
like attachments and if you leave a server it's not included i think
so technically they can get sued
ugh.. Synology diskstation would not update it's lets encrypt cert.. it was because ipv6 was enabled
things like this make it seem ipv6 is not ready
@halcyon moss oh what model do you have?
IPV6 is definitely not ready for primetime. π
ds215j i think
Basically the same as me tho I have 16
They seem to have a revision every year that's the same but different model
I love my nas
it works quite well
@reef patrol Why is IPv6 not "ready for primetime"?
Too many apps and websites don't understand it, and often downright tell you to disable IPV6 if you have it on. π¦
That's not really IPv6 itself's fault thoughβ¦
Oh don't misunderstand. I wasn't referring to the tech itself - Only the implementation
Ipv6 caused so many problems because it's still not widely used
I remember one time setting up a forums site
And I hadn't configured it for ipv6
A bunch of the American users couldn't access the site
I don't even think ipv6 is a thing in the UK beyond on a small scale
I'm really rusty on my networking
Focused mostly on forensics the last 2 years
It sure as hell isn't used in the Netherlands beyond some obscure resources.
I had one client request IPv6 support for security and future proofing, Although they don't really need it yet
I don't want to just enable it all of the sudden without proper testing it first, though.
im not sure my isp (ziggo) supports ipv6
Yeah really strange that it's still not really used even though its been a thing for so long
Although here they switched on IPv6 for mobile connections a few years ago
Works fine!
It's needed
Switch to IPv6 should have started ASAP, so we wouldn't be in this mess right now
I need to go and relearn all the addressing again
Hopefully in the next few years we completely switch over
Minecraft doesn't support it at all, even disables it from what I recall looking at the code.
Which is pretty stupid.
.........well shit
Would be chaos if IPv4 would suddenly be deprecated.
Isn't it deprecated though?
@iron wave please type !restore for me
What framework are you using?
try again
!restore for me
gudenau, it doesn't look like you can use that.
@iron wave Eh, I meant like fully removed support. So a sudden change to IPv6 only. (Not going to happen though)
i want it to ignore you
Maybe in a couple decades. :V
@iron wave I envy your Discord ID with a passion
It was originally 6863 then I changed it.
Plus my UID is not 1337.
It is 157964837895274497.
:^)
ik
Solid choice of ID, though.
I still can't believe I almost had a natural 6969.
Ah, mine is broken and does not do much of anything right now.
Waiting on a database library to update to be compatible with Java 9+. :V
sorry
Not bugging me.
should be doing this in muh playground instead
are....you...kidding me
?
the bot....why rick and morty reference
meeseekssssssssss
Ask whoever designed it.
@plush summit It's a bot designed by and for people with a high IQ.

I know nothing about that show.
I'm not going to visit that.
In theory I could download like 70TB a week, if I am doing my math correctly.
Should i be using ramdisk with 16 gb of ram(256 allocated for ramdisk)
No.
you should use of 1 gig
put your browser cache into it and put all temporary trash there too
#save the flash
done that
if i cave to the prices and get more ram is there anything else i could use the ramdisk for?
I got moaned at for using a few tb a month once
Just reminded them we don't have data caps in the UK and hung up
lucky
Wasn't always a thing
and i do have another question. i have wake timers off....but my pc still keeps waking up from a sleep
any ideas?
Who loves math
Just rang my isp
Could only give me averages
@plush summit I went in a 15 min call for you
Weird hungers
Numbers
If I had an OS I would want the temp stuff would use a RAM disk and if the RAM filled up it would start flushing it to disk.
It would be hard but an interesting optimization.
"start flushing to disk" = swap
I have /tmp mounted as a tmpfs, so what you're describing is basically how it works for me. (Except I don't have swap, so no flushing to disk.)
@pale sigil my god
I dint have that type of data
@digital cliff wolan is disabled
Actually having a problem with discord on desktop right now....wont stop checking for updates.....but i do have internet
Did... No cigar
How odd.
Can your desktop connect to https://discordapp.com ?
So it can access it, so the app is broken for some reason.
That I can not help with.
Maybe it's because I change the location of the temp files
Oh, that could do it.
Try making a directory junction at the old location?
It looks like Discord doesn't support other locations for temp files
A directory junction should fix that.
So do I just create a folder in the location it expects to see something?
So I learned something Discord doesn't support custom set temporary directories
Because the installer also threw an error
yay, junction link worked, thanks @iron wave
Ugh
Always better to make symbolic
Valve working on their own wine
junctions and shit are fun
learned aboot em for work
theres an imac that has an hdd and ssd
but no native way to offload any apps or whatnot
so made a script that would offload users and shit via symlinks
Why could they not make WINE better instead of making a new one?
Because erm
Why would they
Considering it's open source
And not owned by them
Better to developer their own software
Would get the Linux nerds on board.
I know someone that is working on getting it working better, we will see though.
Wine is 100% better than not having it π
He got some stuff working on it that did not before and he is a pretty smart and driven person.
All those poor EVE players with no wrappers
There's a problem out there were people share scripts
To get programs and games running
Anyway, I do hope they let Linux users use it.
On wine
What do you mean?
Lutris for example
?
Lutris is a hub or community of scripts people have made
To get games working with wine
And programs
I am pretty sure he went in a implemented the stubs that the program was calling in order to get it to work.
What I'm saying is that he wouldn't be Improving wine he would just simply be writing for wine
Wine will never get better
Something needs to replace it
(Not saying valve is the solution for wine)
Replace it with what?
Considering how hard core they have done stuff in the past, this might work out fairly well.
Replace or with something better that uses the same concept as wine
So... why not improve wine instead?
Once I tried to make a Pi run a Windows program, wasn't fun.
Because it's by a team that hasn't exactly committed to doing that
wut
@iron wave tbh I wouldn't say making a distro with steam pre installed is hardcore
They went into the streaming and VR stuff pretty hard. Developing a lot of new stuff that worked pretty darn well and confused people reverse engineering it and ended up helping them to do so.
I'm pretty sure this will end up being good if it's released.
And it's very old
Anyway, got to go.
Oh you're saying it should be scrapped and replaced with something written in Rust?
Well that's going to be a massive project
Fore sure
But it has to be done
And it's not a bad idea when someone like value wants to take their own approach
Maybe it will ease another group coming along
Who knows
more projects for Valve to half-finish before they move onto something else :)
Streaming was finished and still under development
Vr they poured a lot into
As for steam machine stuff
Can't blame them for abandoning it
And revisiting
rip steam os
I wish the SteamLink was more stable.
Works fine for me
I get audio hiccups a lot with occasional stutters in the video.
Honestly had issues like rush
That
Must be an encoding issue or connection
It's very demanding
I know it's not the connection.
I used it the other day to play HOI4. Games like that work like a charm on it, but I'd never use it for anything that requires quick reactions. Even using a wired connection, the latency is noticeable
Eh. Wine works pretty damn amazingly for what it is and it may not have huge groundbreaking changes between individual releases, but it certainly has seen huge improvements over time.
I think you underestimate the intricacies of reverse engineering several entire proprietary OS APIs that are only partially documented, including bugs and behaviours that some developers have relied on when writing their programs. If Valve is starting from scratch, they're not getting anywhere close to what Wine can do anytime soon.
Or they're just going to use wine and say they did it themselves
If so, they'll have to adhere to the Wine license terms: https://wiki.winehq.org/Licensing β and as such have to disclose somewhere that they're using and redistributing Wine (and thus also have to provide the(ir modified) Wine source code).
[quadro rtx] β’Hardware support for USB Type-Cβ’ and VirtualLinkβ’(1)
wonder if that will trail down to their non-quadro devices
I'd happily pay the high end gpu premium to get to use portable monitors ( i travel a lot and those use either displayport through usb-c or the horrible displaylink)
yes virtual link is a standard that will be on every coming gpu that can handle VR
from nvidia at least
oh that was implicitly stated by nvidia?
thats what the companies agreed on that decided on the virtual link standard
oculus, valve, nvidia etc. just dont remember if amd was part of it or not
granted they could still "seal" it off and only let it work as virtual link but I doubt that
amd was not part of the consortium
oh wait it was
i misread
but if i read https://nvidianews.nvidia.com/news/new-open-industry-standard-introduced-for-connecting-next-generation-vr-headsets-to-pcs-other-devices there's no real commitment
A new industry consortium led by NVIDIA, Oculus, Valve, AMD, and Microsoft today introduced the VirtualLink specification -- an open industry standard that enables next-generation VR headsets to connect with PCs and other devices using a single, high-bandwidth USB Type-C conn...
ports after all fall on the AIBs
i fear it might not be on consumer cards this (next) generation
a 21.6 inch portable OLED monitor is supposed to come from Asus this year
"under 1 thousand usd"
Damn radio silence, still since CES 2018
21.6 is a strange size for portability though
with the smallest reasonable bezel it's like 48cm wide
well its will be on this years consumer nvidia cards for sure
pcb is already leaked
im salty if the improvment is seriously big
and it would make no sense to wait 2 more years for them
from virtual link you mean?
pretty sure he means performance
correcto
there are leaks now
but who knows if they are true
80 being 7% faster than current ti?
yeah looks like "good" increase in performance looking at the worst looking leaks
also Turing will have opportunities to increase general performance over time with more mature dirvers making use of AI/RTX cores for other tasks
now what does that sound like π
all that said,
those leaks were very close to their financial call
yes the leaks are also less than a week away from the offical announcement lmao
and pcb etc. are leaked on multiple occasions not just one place
looks like it wasnt super effective though
why is amd going up though, bad crypto guidance is bad for amd too
nah it already shot up a while ago
think goldman sachs or one other rating company upgrade nvidia by two steps at once
and amd got upgraded too which is why they are going up
well amd and nvidia is a rollercoaster as always, nvidia much less so in the last half year though
well analyst thought vega could bring issues to nvidia LMAO thats why nvidia was rated lowly
to me nvidia is overrated
in what currency
well I guess they are but its kinda easy to do if you almost have a monopol in the space
250 euros? $?
nonono
stock prices
oh
my next gpu will be nvidia anyway :x
can't wait any more years for amd to create a hbm-less gpu
Hmm.... not sure whether to get a 2080 or wait for the TI to get a foothold and force prices down.
rumors are the ti will be announced at the same time this year
i hate nvidea for the garbage the pull
Get a Titan V. :^)
yeah I really hope Intels GPUs in 2020 are a good start for them so we have some competition to bring more to the consumer
They have tried GPUs before.
@iron wave yeah...that way nvidea can say fuck you and release a 2080 ti thats just as fast for a fraction of the cost...and another titan v that is faster
yeah, now they have a new team and try it again differently
It was a joke.
i really hope intel comes in with something worth drooling over
tfw you only play old crap so new CPUs increase FPS more than GPUs
a solid start is enough, theyn they can deliver punches to nvida with the coming generation
dont expect them to suddenly be #1
amd is amd....they keep most of their stuff open, nvidea is the exclusives company that has good stuff.....and screws over the consumer as well
there's kind of the problem of AMD gpus not existing
how can i support open stuff when they dont exist
2 evils...amd is not innocent
im hoping intel comes in and can force them both to behave with something good
i went with amd because price to performance...and gsync monitors are expensive
yep, but for the time I'll have to buy a 20xx and learn how to use the rtx cores and such
psh then it would just be 3 evils
im hoping not
still makes it more likely one of intel/amd is good and can keep prices down, dont see them making it worse
but you're probably right
whoever is weakest at any given time is more likely to be good
will be interesting to have 3 in the game though
cough r9 fury X cough
The x86 Intel GPU was neat.
It would be interesting if intel finds a way to influence game development as much as nvidia does
Did you know that the iGPUs smoke AMD and Nvidia GPUs in a very specific part of the pipeline?
I did not
it's the part of the pipe that burns?
gotem
ram went on offerr today
when was zen2 coming again?
intels iGPU are beating everything in certain rendering acceleration, forgot for which tools, blender?
and zen2, some parts at least are coming q4 this year iirc
I think that's just epyc being sampled to some companies
right, vega7nm this year apparently was what I was mixing it up with
yeah
I might finally make a desktop when ryzen 3 comes out
wish amd had better laptops though
part of me wants to wait for Zen2 so badly
I want the dream of AMD actually taking the crown from Intel
and not just offering much better values
but I'm so impatient and the i9-9900k stands in my way π
It's some strange transform thing, it's very specific.
Don't remember exactly what it was though.
EPYC2 should be fun.
maybe that transform thing will become apparent in their dGPU
inb4 meme gaming build with epyc2
I honestly want a dual EPYC system.
what would you use it for?
VMs, code compiling, servers, stuff like that.
I don't know much about server stuff
I heard there's some problem where you can't live migrate from intel to amd
man I dont find the benchmarks that showed how good the iGPU is, damn
But I could really use those threads.
I also want to mess with NUMA stuff.
Plus I generally have like 20+ windows open at once. Hahaha.
I wish I could have like 10 monitors
That feeling when you need multiple IDEs running at once.
Adobe premiere, thats where intels igpu beats everything
I think I failed out of my game development major because I didn't have enough monitors
its depending if you do multiple at once or render them one after another, its a "recent" update where it can use the igpu power in addition, not 100% on how/why exactly
this is explaining some parts of it, if you are curious https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tj6rUdhmIvQ
This Adobe Premiere benchmark tests rendering speed on an i7-8700K vs. Ryzen 7 2700X, i9-7980XE, and Threadripper 1950X. Ad: Buy Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut on ...
I wish quicksync and nvec where easier to use.
damn this internet
"The firm's newly-inaugurated Intel Graphics Twitter account posted a teaser during the ongoing Siggraph 2018 conference on Wednesday ..."
as far as i can read
for the past hour..
Has anyone ever travelled by air with all in ones?
I tried to use an Intel SDK. Didn't work right.
15 minutes lmao
RTX2080Ti $999
yeah....why i switched back to cables
bunch of leaks for the 2000 series GPUs and I gotta say, probably the ugliest group of cards I've ever seen
.....why care about the looks....how powerful and how long will they last is what i want to know
all the leaks are AIB ones
I mean the looks have zero influence on my desire(or lack thereof) to buy one, I'm just saying they look really bad lol
imo of course
Just take the cooler off and throw a water block on. :^)
Yup
I'm designing a low profile pc case (box)+open testbench style pci-e supports
what's a good width? i was thinking of 7cm with no motherboard supports (would eat up around 6mm), only a piece of plastic to avoid shorting
sfx psus are 6cm, most low profile cpu coolers seem to be under 7cm
to properly design the case i need to turn off this computer...
I'd look at something like the Node 202 for rough dimensions.
too big
ok, after quite a bit of measurements and sketching and planning for future gpus, the only thing that makes sense is a riser cable for the gpu
this should be a 4 hour project, compared to the 64 one i made before
hm.. what would be nice is a non-flat riser cable
seems like they will, neat
I need to design a reasonable amount of vents (will be covered from the inside with grills
One thing I want is a low profile PCI-e riser cable so I can get to the PCI-e slot under my GPU.
Either that or one that I can use to get my GPU out of the case I guess.
Something like this looks decent, but also looks like it's far too high profile...
7yr olds are expensive customers π
Nothing special, but it was a fun build. Haven't done mATX in a while, but I found myself having (almost) enough spare parts lying around to build an entry gamer PC.
7400, 2x8GB 3000Mhz TridentZ RAM and a 1050ti
@iron wave wait that's usb 3
It is just used because it is a standard that is somewhat cheap and rugged that happens to work for transferring PCI-e.
Is that a fortnite machine mansen?
