just download an app

A lot of streamers just use android/windows tablets

latent mural

i just think no one who needs their windows version to work for work should be running a version without skippable updates

pale sigil
#

Am i the only one who hates the idea that when doing an RMA via contact us

#

they create an account

#

with a rando generated password

#

@worldly loom the only id like numberpad is for work

#

i just don't like oversized keyboards

#

you're talking to someone who uses 60%

worldly loom
#

What advantages does a smaller keyboard provide?

pale sigil
#

Personal preference, less space, bettter typing experience in some cases, cheaper also.

#

Numberpads to me seem pretty useless even for gaming, for work they are beyond vital (i used full before wooting, ironically when using a proto woot i kept tapping my desk!)

worldly loom
#

You don't make binds on your numpads?

pale sigil

Not really no, why would i, its long and i want my mouse closer xD

if i want bindings ill use different keys

I dunno man, I would download autohotkey and script a bunch of shit to those keys

It's really good

pale sigil

ye i used to

especially for mmo's

tbh

#

but idk, i don't miss it

zenith mirage
#

Yeah i'd only miss a numpad if i did a lot of spreadsheets

pale sigil
#

Ye thats why i said work

zenith mirage
#

My only use for them these days is typing in my card info when ordering something

pale sigil
#

At work i used my old mech

#

with full keyboard

#

my card etails are stored on lastpass

#

it has a third layer password tho

#

cant just auto fill it in

zenith mirage
#

Typing in IP addresses is another use I guess

pale sigil
#

idk, seems silly to want a numberpad

#

for that

zenith mirage
#

Yep

#

I'd buy a standalone pad for that stuff

#

The extra desk space is great

pale sigil
#

Side question: Has anyone ever dealt with an RMA for an SSD before? it wont show up in the BIOS at all and Sandisk seem to keep pushing the idea across that even if it failed it should show up intensethonk

zenith mirage
#

And your arms lie in a more natural postion rather than being spread out

#

At least in my case

pale sigil
#

"Go ahead and keep losing your files. I am an smartass, that's why I have HDDs more than 25 years old and no data lost. HDDs tend to fail in shorter time than SSDs but those failing are not bad enough to lose everything while SSDs tend to fail more in the long term badly (as it happened to you).

As HDDs fail in shorter time, you make use of the warranty while SSDs get out of the period and you waste money ad they get another purchase. It is a programed disposability."

#

I don't think this guy understands how you use SSDs and that everyone who buys one knows they don't last that long LMFAO

#

If people store data on SSD's they need to rethink their strat

zenith mirage
#

Realistically how long do they last? I've never really thought about it

pale sigil

is what is expected

#

luckily this drive failed a few months before warrenty xD

zenith mirage
#

Huh

pale sigil
#

just depends

zenith mirage
#

That's surpising, but maybe because i don't know much about flash storage

pale sigil
#

how well you optomize them

zenith mirage
#

I just store games and important applications on mine

pale sigil
#

Basically

#

if you redirect EVERYTHING including cache, anything thats writing, dont store anything on it but applications

#

you can boost big time

#

if you dont do anything and just run everything off it

#

it WILL die quick

#

more you write = faster it dies

zenith mirage
#

Huh

#

So what can I as your average person do to extend the life?

#

Never really thought about saving my SSDs

pale sigil
zenith mirage
#

I'll look into it tomorrow

pale sigil
#

Joking

#

Its a whole cluster fuck

#

Redirect all browser cache for a start

#

they write GBs upon GBs

#

considering that was 13 months ago thats good

zenith mirage
#

Right

pale sigil
#

Usually warrenty ends at 75tb

zenith mirage
#

That's a while then

pale sigil
#

Well no

#

I did a shit ton

#

like i even redirected spotify

#

The aim is to have nothing writing

#

@zenith mirage here is a perfect example, cousin has been reckless and has had this for not even a year

worldly loom

You actually can.

But that would not work if you want to use it.

#

xD

#

its what forensic analysts do

worldly loom

Also where can I get a disk health reader

pale sigil

When asked when the next-gen GeForce would arrive, Jensen quipped, "It will be a long time from now. I'll invite you, and there will be lunch. "

#

oh it hurts

#

damn you amd with your fckn hbm

pale sigil
#

@zenith mirage sorry to ping but i want to get it across for you, a good way to save your SSD is redirecting data.. for example

mklink /d "C:\Users\MrPleasant_exe\AppData\Local\Spotify" "G:\Programs Cache\Spotify\SpotifyData"

So let me explain what this is doing

mklink /d

This dates back to DOS "Creates a directory symbolic link. By default, mklink creates a file symbolic link."

"C:\Users\MrPleasant_exe\AppData\Local\Spotify"

This is the orignal location of cache or example program, in this case Spotify... what we want to do is make a backup of the current Spotify folder and put it elseware or rename!

"G:\Programs Cache\Spotify\SpotifyData"

In this case i redirect cache to my HDD as well HDDs dont die quickly unless Seagate Kappa, anyway, make a folder on there and put the directly in the command as shown above, simple as that. Hit enter, it should say the following....

symbolic link created for C:\Users\MrPleasant_exe\AppData\Local\Spotify <<===>> G:\Programs Cache\Spotify\SpotifyData

If successfull you will have a folder that looks like this

https://i.imgur.com/zuOecDz.png

#

There are other ways of doing this but it works blobshrug i guess this goes for anyone interested pokes @sour garnet

latent mural
#

cant spotify be migrated directly?

#

or is the app lying to me

pale sigil
#

Only offline music

latent mural
#

so it's lying to me

pale sigil
#

Like, there used to be an option to choose location of cache

latent mural
#

it's still there

pale sigil
#

but they removed it

#

edited

#

And it always ended up going back to C:

latent mural
#

oh right i set it to C myself

#

it would bug out

#

it still on where i directed it

pale sigil
#

can you show me

#

in the spotify client

latent mural
#

but it would bug out and require a recheck of the whole thing

pale sigil
#

that offline

#

songs

#

not cache

#

Spotfy downloads all songs and caches it, this is seperate to downloading your songs from premoium

#

*premium

#

i had 9gb of cache alone

#

i guess they merged them

latent mural
#

pretty sure that is the cache

#

it increases in size during streaming

pale sigil
#

months ago it used to have both cache

latent mural
#

the app data one does not

pale sigil
#

2 different options

#

cache and song downloads

#

Well regardless what i said above

#

is valid

#

i had to do it for chrome.... would generate so much

#

Oh god....

#

So apparently i recorded a 5 hour long gif

#

gj me

latent mural

in IE you could place it on a ramdisk and when it ran out it would just use the ram instead

pale sigil

LEDs are dirt cheap to power.

They barely constume anything

fickle ore

pale sigil

latent mural
#

when we'll be done,

#

pale sigil
#

for a moment i thought you said RWBY

fickle ore
#

If everyone uses RGB on every component however, the environmental impact will add up. Bah, what a waste inside a case nobody never looks into.

latent mural
#

amazingly, iy would still be less than 5 people turning on a microwave

fickle ore
#

But a lot more material gone to waste

trail kiln
#

a bit late but I think the reason I like my numpad other than the extra keys is when I do spreadsheet stuff. Being able to type numbers without moving your hands terribly much is nice.

fickle ore
#

Microwave is used occasionally and pc is up 24/7 ๐Ÿ˜›

latent mural
#

nagga: mw is 600-1100W

#

a set of RGB leds is <computing>

#

very little

fickle ore
#

1.7 Watts per 30cm for led strips, yeah, but it's continous usage while Microwave is used for a minute or two or less

#

Whatever, just a waste and added cost for PC parts. I'll be fine aslong as they don't force them onto me ffs

latent mural
#

when you convert that to kWh that's still nothing

tall finch
#

tbh you probably have a better argument against the added material waste from RGB everything

fickle ore
#

as I said, if it becomes the norm in future -> 7 billion people using RGB.. that's 1.7 W x 7 billion + materials + LED controller wattage so around 14 Gigawatts of waste or around 7000 windturbines needed OR 64.4 million solar panels ๐Ÿ˜› But whatever, just fun to think about

latent mural
#

now imagine 60% of them turned on a microwave

fickle ore
#

NOOOOO

latent mural
#

just 1 time

#

for 1 minute

#

per day

#

or better yet

#

were running a mining bot for 5 minutes every day

fickle ore
#

But microwave is needed haha, RGB doesnt cook food

#

Yea mining is a big waste

latent mural
#

microwaves are often kept on for longer than they should

fickle ore
#

So is gaming, should stop heh

latent mural
#

but the real problem are electric kettles

#

those things get turned on unnecessarily all the time

pale sigil
#

Second day of my friend lending my VR headset

pale sigil
#

gonna be on edge all week lol

worldly loom
#

Have you ever played Garry's mod?

#

Stuff is bound to the numpads by default

#

I think that's the game that taught me to love the numpad. I use it for all sorts of things now

#

Have you tried a numpad in space engineers?

#

I find this conversation fascinating

#

People are willing to turn down extra buttons

#

Back in my csgo days, I would bind weapon buys to my numpad, along with jump throws for grenades

latent mural
#

in professional software the numpad is always used extensively, not having a permanent one even if you're gaming primarily can be most annoying as on an external one you still generally have to look at it as it might have misaligned in relation to the qwerty keyboard, when it's permanent you don't really look at it, you just input. I still keep hitting wooting's Mode instead of the * i want

#

kind of regret buying the wooting one, back then knowing that i'd rather want the unannounced wooting two anyway

#

if it gets you to love the numpad, you should

worldly loom
#

Well I'm glad the two has a numpad, because now I can experience analog keys

neat oriole
#

I play pretty low sens so the narrower keyboard allows for a larger mousepad

latent mural
#

i had to bind scroll lock to a mouse button

neat oriole
#

That said in more casual games I do bind things to the numpad

#

If wooting had a modular system where the numpad could be to the right or to the left Iโ€™d be very happy

latent mural
#

but but but you cant use it as an efficient left hand numpad when it's on the left without changing the layout

neat oriole
#

For less competitive open world games I have quite a few vehicle controls on the numpad

#

But I havenโ€™t really played those in a while so donโ€™t really miss it

worldly loom
#

I bet you use a disgusting 60% @digital cliff

neat oriole
#

What exactly is a 60? Is it just the main QWERTY area without function or arrows or print screen?

worldly loom
#

Wooting three is 60% confirmed

neat oriole
#

I could see that being good for portability to like a LAN party

#

My laptop is pretty massive so I can sit a full size keyboard on it

worldly loom
#

I bring my full size case with my full size keyboard and my 21:9 screen to lan parties

neat oriole
#

Itโ€™s kinda ridiculous but better than chiclet

#

I sometimes bring my house to the LAN parties

latent mural

you live in a van?

neat oriole
#

Or am I just hosting it?

#

hmmmmmm

worldly loom

Dude I'm hated at lan parties

#

I bring all this huge ass shit and my noisy keyboard

neat oriole

Probably cuz everyoneโ€™s already finished playing by the time you set up

worldly loom
#

And then stomp them

latent mural
#

I built a can't physically make it smaller matx case for portability that supports a full set of expansion chards and has good air cooling
havent gone to a lan party as gpu prices are still too damn high

worldly loom

I wanna get a small case

#

But unfortunate events forced me to replace my GPU cooler

#

And now it's too long

reef patrol

Yes.

latent mural

how possible it is to make the cables shorter without making them look ugly? (destroying the fabric cover)

reef patrol
#

Can't shorten them. Best you can due is use some cable ties and bunch them up in a loop.

latent mural
#

well surely you can cut them

#

or it's something too messy for the pretty fabric to remain
like, if they'd use glue on the ends

reef patrol

You'd have to re-sleeve them with a lighter and new flex and everything.

At that point you might as well just order specific cables for your PSU from Cablemod or your PSU manufacturer (if they have any for that model)

latent mural

anyone ever used ethernet over powerline?

pale sigil
#

Me

#

Its actually used for that above

latent mural
#

i need to connect a house to the network, i have a choice of 2 sets of wifi extenders or just powerline

pale sigil
#

A house?

#

Has to be om the same power line

#

So it won't work

latent mural
#

it is

pale sigil
#

If you're connecting 2 houses?

latent mural
#

but like, what's the speed:reliability ?

pale sigil
#

It really depends on the power lines itself

latent mural
#

to simplify, i'm connecting a shed to the internet

pale sigil
#

Like older power cables etc can be really bad

#

For example I got 120 via mine

#

My cousin got like 8 on a 200mb line because his houses power cables are all built differently

#

If your house is fairly new it shouldn't be an issue

#

Really depends on how old the wiring is, how much there is and how it's built

#

Another issue can be latency

#

My powerlines add around 10-15ms

#

I used to use them in 2011 but now they are jusy used for the sky box lol

latent mural
#

hm..

pale sigil
#

Only thing i can suggest is buying some on amazon

#

Testing them

#

If they don't work refund them lol

latent mural
#

can't do that here

#

New wires were laid less than 10 years ago

#

Except... not by a certified electrician

pale sigil
#

Then I'm not sure sorry

latent mural
#

The whole house(s) except high power devices (kitchen etc) are connected via nested junction boxes

#

The real problem is that poweline ethernet costs almost the same as 2 routers

pale sigil
#

@latent mural explain what you're trying to do

#

And I can give you my take on it

halcyon moss
#

i used some ethernet over power, cheap ones, they broke and i got max 2MB/s

latent mural
#

There's a dsl connection on the far end of the house, with the cables running around walls, so I dont want to take them out.
Around 15 metes away is the closer end of the house, where i intended to put a wifi router/extender/etc on the window.
30 meters from there is another house, with the window on the side, so effectively 35 meters away with no clear line of sight.
I need to add internet to that house using the same dsl connection.

halcyon moss
#

now im just using wifi

#

usb wifi ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

latent mural
#

I must specify that nothing can be attached to the outside of the house.

#

so if I could save all that time and mess by a powerline adapter..

#

hm...

pale sigil
#

So you wanna share connection lol

solar hinge
#

My powerlan doesn't get worse with latency at all

latent mural
#

Well yeah, hence the powerline

pale sigil
#

Idk what you're on about quinn

#

Well what I'd suggested if I'm honest

#

Is using an eithernet cable, cover it in tape and put it a bit under soil

#

Use a switch in the other house

#

Then just do whatever from there

latent mural
#

Yeah, you can stop there, that wont be done :p

solar hinge
#

My powerlines add around 10-15ms

#

you said that @pale sigil

pale sigil
#

Keyword mine

#

All houses cabling is different

solar hinge
#

True

#

Mostly depends on age

pale sigil
#

Well then I guess your only option is powerline but I can't guretee anything and I don't understand why 2 houses are sharing the same cabling

#

@latent mural are they connected houses? This is really confusing for someone who lives in the UK at least

#

Every house has their own power lines

latent mural
#

the houses are on the same estate owned and built by the same person

solar hinge
#

Or for someone from nl/be

#

Ah

pale sigil
#

Yes but they shouldn't share the same cabling

solar hinge
#

Just buy it and check how well it works

#

If it's bad, return it

pale sigil
#

The only thing that should be connected is the house to the main power box

#

Also quinn he said he can't

#

With that logic if I used a power adapter I could be leaching next door :p

#

If I got the same model etc

solar hinge
#

You have them connect to each other nowadays

#

No more leeching

pale sigil
#

Either way

#

What you're protruding should not work

latent mural
#

It was prohibitively expensive to add a separate power box etc so it was decided to keep the house connected, just running on different phase wires as there was no intention to sell the houses at any point.

pale sigil
#

If it did I'd be really concerned xD

latent mural
#

well..

solar hinge
#

I'd go with callum's idea, UTP cable outside to connect both

latent mural
#

it's not even on different phases

#

IT'S A mess

pale sigil

Nothing more bae than having a gigabit network

solar hinge
