#

Just look at this

#

Also you donโ€™t need 32gb for gaming, even 8gb is fine.

#

Post title: High-end gaming/synthesis build plan

#

OP notes on RAM: If this was a pure gaming build, this would be overkill. But EastWest Hollywood Orchestra recommends at least 16GB.

reef patrol
#

๐Ÿ˜„

tiny tide
#

@crude cipher I recommend at least 16gb of ram in any build these days other than cheap 400 dollar meme builds

crude cipher
#

Same, I won't build a PC with less than 16

#

This machine has 32GB and I use it

#

12GB in use, living the swap free life

tiny tide
#

this laptop im using while at college only has 1x16gb stick, will probably upgrading to 32gb myself dual channel

#

it's too bad that 16gb ddr4 2400mhz sodimm is so damned expensive

crude cipher
#

RAM was cheap last spring

#

Now? It's insane

#

Everything is expensive

tiny tide
#

yeah man like 150 bucks to upgrade to 32gb

crude cipher
#

RAM, SSDs, GPUs...

tiny tide
#

16gb is enough for now I suppose

crude cipher
#

Only thing that has good pricing is CPUs

tiny tide
#

i7 7700hq, 1050ti, 16gb ram is decent eh

#

only thing that NEEDS replacing is this old af 5400rpm hdd

crude cipher
#

6820HQ, M1000M, 32GB, 512GB 850 Pro

#

You'll have a better rig overall once you throw out that rusty rust

steel urchin
#

I went with a pentium g4560 and a gtx 1050 with 16 gb ram for myself

reef patrol
#

Definitely not bad for an entry level PC, though having a 1050 on my laptop, I definitely feel like a 1060 is the bare minimum for me. ๐Ÿ˜…

steel urchin
#

I am going up to ryzen next with a 1070 for streaming

reef patrol
#

๐Ÿ˜ƒ

crude cipher
#

@reef patrol have you benched the 1070 @ 3440x1440?

errant bloom
#

@crude cipher in most games it works well, you will be at around 60 fps with optimised settings in pubg

crude cipher
#

@errant bloom because PUBG is unoptimized?

errant bloom
#

no, with settings set to most practical is maybe another way to put it

#

so you get 60 fps out of it now if you lower all setting, but render distance to lowest

#

and force multithreading in addition to some settings in the nvidia control panel

#

went from 30 to 60 fps

reef patrol
#

Can't say that I have - I don't think anyone on the crew has a widescreen monitor atm.

crude cipher
#

@errant bloom right but so like how does that compare to other games at the same res?

#

@reef patrol ok

errant bloom
#

if you are looking for 100 fps you will need to upgrade to a better card, but with little to no tweaking you can run most new games at atleast 60 fps without turning too many of the settings down

reef patrol
#

What card are we even talking about?

errant bloom
#

the 1070 at 3440x1440

reef patrol
#

Ehhhhh.... you're going to be compromising on settings in most games.

crude cipher
#

I currently play everything at low or low-mid settings

#

However

solar hinge
#

Don't you have a widescreen monitor @reef patrol

crude cipher
#

I did see an analysis that the 1080 is the second best cost/perf card available right now, after the 1060 3gb

reef patrol
#

I HAD one. My current one is standard 1440P

errant bloom
#

i would go for the 1080 if i was in the market for a new graphics card

solar hinge
#

Why did you not keep it?

reef patrol
#

It was a lender ๐Ÿ˜‰

solar hinge
#

Ah

reef patrol
#

I can't even max out Tomb Raider at regular 1440P with my 1080 @60fps

crude cipher
#

That seems odd

reef patrol
#

The snow part of the benchmark alone will happily dip down below 30fps

crude cipher
#

Thought the 1080 was supposed to be the dominant 1440 card

solar hinge
#

It's the user @crude cipher

reef patrol
#

I DID say max out - Ultra is the GPU killer. It is much more sensible to stay at High / Very High in 99% of games with almost no graphical fidenitely difference.

#

I know Wildlands runs at about 70-90FPS on average at Very High @1440P

crude cipher
#

If I get the monitor, I won't have it until next year

#

Maybe I should just get a 1060 3gb and wait for the 11s

reef patrol
#

No no no. 6GB for sure. Too many games can eat between 3-4GB VRAM. ๐Ÿ˜„

#

Even my RX480 was surprisingly easy to eat some 3,5. More than 4 is hard though.

crude cipher
#

I amn't playing tomb raider though

solar hinge
#

Jiggly boobies physics

crude cipher
#

Shadow of War is probably my most demanding game right now

#

@solar hinge ew Final Fantasy

solar hinge
#

No, tomb raider os the original one

#

I can't even put youtube on 1080p on my laptop... Goes crazy

crude cipher
#

Rip

solar hinge
#

It's from 2008

#

Hd4650 mobile in it

#

Core 2 duo

#

4gb of ram

#

BUT, except for a battery replacement and upgrade to SSD, it still works enough for work

#

And 720p streaming

#

Videos i can watch at full HD if it's a local file

crude cipher
#

@reef patrol anyways, I'm currently gaming on a 2gb card

reef patrol
#

Oh dear ๐Ÿ˜„

crude cipher
#

Mobile Maxwell workstation cards ftw

solar hinge
#

Not to bad for my phone connection

crude cipher
#

So yeah

#

Basically anything is an upgrade

solar hinge
#

Lol multiple GB card

#

I don't feel your pain

crude cipher
#

I might even switch back to my 1050Ti 4GB plan

#

@solar hinge this is my first computer with meaningful dedicated graphics

solar hinge
#

That's just sad

crude cipher
#

Before that I had Haswell U integrated and a GT 520

solar hinge
#

And in your pc?

crude cipher
#

GT 520 in my desktop.

#

The U machine didn't have dedicated

solar hinge
#

A gt 520

#

Who bought that

crude cipher
#

I was young and foolish then

#

But I put it in a computer with matrox graphics on the mobo

#

It was an upgrade

#

This was back when I used a 1440x900 monitor with the color fidelity of a Picasso

#

Anyway I've heard that the 1060 3GB is a better gaming choice than the 1050Ti 4GB but IDK

#

Obviously better FPS with the 1060 as long as things fit in VRAM

reef patrol
#

If the prices are similar, definitely.

#

I'd rather compromise a bit to ensure the VRAM doesn't fill, than get stuck with the 1050TI

crude cipher
#

1050Ti is 145-155 USD, 1060 3GB has come as low as 185 tho

#

Newegg rebate, otherwise 205

reef patrol
#

You're looking at something like 30FPS difference on higher settings in demanding games.

crude cipher
#

Didn't realize the core count difference was so high

#

Yeah I guess I'll snag the 3GB

#

I can give/sell to a friend when I upgrade.

#

I'm gonna get crucified if I post this build to /r/buildapc

reef patrol
#

A lot of those groups are very judgy and surprisingly ignorant when it comes to anything outside of their niche knowledge.

crude cipher
#

"what kind of idiot spends more on RAM than a GPU?!"

reef patrol
#

Today I had a customer ask how to run 12 monitors on the same PC in a completely serious tone. He needed to run a bunch of live sports in a betting company.

crude cipher
#

Triple low end Quadro?

reef patrol
#

We decided to try some 1060s at first, because the output ports made more sense, but Quadro style cards was definitely a consideration - Also low end single slot cards like the Geforce 710, which will run 3 monitors easily. Problem is we'd need for of those.

crude cipher
#

Yup.

#

Mobo options gonna suck any way you dice it though.

#

I didn't realize the 1060 had quad monitor support

#

Will you underclock to keep the power draw sane?

reef patrol
#

Naw - Besides they will practically be running idle anyways.

#

At the end of the day we are a business - Fiddling with firmware is very risky warranty wise ๐Ÿ˜…

crude cipher
#

True

#

Probably the very cheapest option would actually be FirePro W4100. Huh

crude cipher
#

6 mDP that's awesome

solar hinge
#

why is it so expensive though, for a now, 7series?

tiny tide
#

niche market, high price

solar hinge
#

yeah but that much

tiny tide
#

I can't imagine profit margins are that great on the product anyway

crude cipher
#

@solar hinge think about the power and mobo savings

solar hinge
#

But will it be that much?

Still working on the OC guides - Bit busy today ๐Ÿ˜…

ashen spindle
#

@reef patrol you do reviews right? Done some about pc cases too?

reef patrol
#

Occasionally, yes.

ashen spindle
#

what's a good case you'd recommend? Don't care about looks at all, more looking for something that has good airflow and is easy to clean/dedust

reef patrol
#

Depends on your needs mostly. There are a LOT of cases that fits that bill these days. The case I've used personally for a year or so, the S340 (Elite version) from NZXT ticks those, unless you need a lot of drive space.

ashen spindle
#

nah, building new pc in like 2 weeks, 1 ssd and 1 hdd should be enough for what I need

reef patrol
#

The S340 comes with either a plexi window, or tempered glass for the elite. If you're not into the window thing, a different case might be more optimal, but for the price and with the features, I definitely consider the S340s a success.

ashen spindle
#

well the pc is under my desk so I barely see it which is why looks dont concern me at all ๐Ÿ˜„

#

I'll take a look at it, thanks

reef patrol
#

Fair enough. The S340 should be good for you then. You basically yank the front off, and there's a big dust filter there to clean. That's about it.

zenith mirage
#

I can vouch for the S340

#

It's a nice case to build in too

ashen spindle
#

yeah I think I go with that unless I find something else by chance, plan on getting a new pc once coffe lake comes out, my current pc is getting close to 5 years old

reef patrol
#

An alternative could be the Be Quiet Dark Base series. I had the 600 in for a try - WAY too many drive bays for me, but it was a great case.

ashen spindle
#

yeah that one seems good too, I'll probably just go with whatever I can get cheaper at the place where I order the rest

ashen spindle
#

great, all my usb ports are dying, glad I'm buying new stuff next week

Finally ordered Modi Multibit + Magni 3

What's the need for anything man? I would also get twin Titans

ashen spindle

okay?

zenith mirage
#

Yeah an i9 is very overkill for a lot of general use cases.

#

Of course you may get one if you had enough money to not care about value, but that could br said for anything. No point considering it though.

ashen spindle
#

I was considering it but quad channel memory and high cost of the mainboards just are too much for what I need

#

also more likely to upgrade on that platform since future cpus will have more cores and not as expensive as the X(E) cpus

zenith mirage
#

That's what I like about AM4. Same socket for the next few gens. Allegedly.

ashen spindle
#

yeah, I'm really happy about amd beeing back in competition, that will always end up helping every consumer but intel cpus are just better for me

zenith mirage
#

That's reasonable. Per core on Intel will likely be better for a while so if that's important then that's what you should buy.

solar hinge

did you see the news about the ryzen 1600 and x having 8 cores / 16 threads instead of 6 & 12

ashen spindle
#

link? im really curious aobut that, seems like it would be a bad idea for amd

reef patrol
#

Packaging error.

#

Either they misprinted 1600 information on an unlocked/functional R7 chip, or they forgot to lock the cores before assembly. Same CPU after all.

tiny tide
#

I think it's a batch that didn't get cores disabled, runs at same clock as 1600x but has the cores enabled

crude cipher
#

We know it's the same CPU with cores disabled

reef patrol
#

The important question is whether they actually all WORK or not.

ashen spindle

reef patrol

VEGA - Too much power draw, not enough horsepower, HBM2 didn't make a difference to use cases.

glad scroll

If im not wrong, Vega perfomed extremly well in mining?

Besides, with dash getting conquered by asic's, there is one currency less that can be mined with gpu's

tiny tide
#

I'm interested how you find coffee lake dissappointing? It's a 6 core mainstream intel lineup, quite exciting. Unless you were banking on them supporting the third refresh on the first two motherboards, which is asinine when you look at their release history.

reef patrol
#

It didn't actually improve the gaming performance in the slightest, which was Intel's biggest ace right now. If you're gaming on a Skylake or newer, you have no reason to change, and if you're into production, chances are you already have a 5th gen Intel, an i9 or a Ryzen.

I was expecting single core performance to take the usual leap forwards. More cores don't help you, when the software doesn't use them.

#

In fact it runs slightly slower than the 7700K due to the additional cores in some games. Not on a noticeable level, but kind of sad.

#

Sure - If you're still stuck on Haswell or the like, it's a better deal than Sky or Kaby, but that much was obvious to anyone. Newer is always better.

you need an object to bridge across both keyboards to actuate them at roughly the same time

fickle ore
#

bear in mind you need switches with same force/throw distance for that test to be of any value, and even then there are tolerances for springs and switches etc

#

and the switches need to be of same type like linear vs linear

lethal wasp
#

on the contrary, this takes a total reading which is arguably more relevent in usage.

#

actuation point, spring force, debounce and polling rate all play a role in responsiveness

#

it's obvious that optical keyboards have a huge advantage because of their 0 debounce latency anyways, I just wanted a more rounded example

#

for instance, my POS Qpad KB has 125hz polling and MX red switches so it's entirely reasonable the wooting would be 15-20ms faster

#

7ms slower polling + a minimum of 5ms debounce but could be much higher since there are no complaints of chatter and a 25% further actuation point

fickle ore
#

You need an object that doesn't bend, even a little since higher spring force would bend more the side of the object

#

Also actuation point matters in that test, more than it does in gaming. Are you slamming the object as fast/hard as you're in gaming? Exactly in the middle of the object with 100% accuracy, so that it doesn't favour either keyboard as first?

#

But I agree actuation distance definitely has quantifiable effect on the total input lag chain, as does spring force, etc.. I'm just saying that test isn't a good way to measure it. You need someoen to solder the wires to one button instead.

fickle ore
#

which keyboard @digital cliff

#

and what actuation distance is on that "Othey keyboard"?

#

are you using blue switches or red?

#

also are you using the latest firmware on wooting? Also was it digital profile or analog?

#

Cheers man

#

does Poker 2 have 1000hz polling and whats the actuation distance?

#

if its mx red then its 2mm

#

well that test is worrying

#

something seems broken in wooting :S

#

I mean, was it bump test or object test?

#

it could be because of the wootings 55g spring force vs mx red 45g

#

but somehow the result of 2-12 indicate variance within wooting somewhere

#

That software works fine, its being used for benchmarking mice

#

Yes but if your poker wins all the time.

#

I mean, did you try to change the physical location of the boards? I mean if the wooting was on left side all the time, switch it to right side and poker on left side.. Idk ๐Ÿ˜›

#

Aye

#

but if the result is consistent, then wooting has more latency which shouldnt really be the case at all

#

Right

#

I bought the keyboard mainly because of its claim of low latency and secondly because of no double clicks

#

Im sure, yeah

#

Hopefully he can give some insight into thta

#

I'm trying to find if Poker 2 is indeed 1000hz polling or not.

#

I know this

#

Yes USB speeds do matter, as do scanning speeds

#

Its the keyboard MCU/firmware that u can specify which polling rate you want

#

Wooting is 1000hz polling. I'm really interested now if Poker II is 1000hz aswell, since if it's not, your test results indicate there is some additional latency somewhere in the wooting

#

If you don't mind, I would be really happy if you could check Poker II with usbview (microsoft program) whether it specifies "Full-Speed USB" and "binterval =0x01" for any descriptors?

#

Thanks a bunch man! I'm just double checking, you picked the right device in usbview and it spesifies both?

#

Cheers! ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

#

so yes, poker II is true 1000hz polling then

#

or should be

#

well usbview confirms wooting is 1000hz and I think Jeroen confirmed it

#

Yup

#

But IIRC, last I talked to Jeroen, the internal key scanning was below 1000hz due to some issues

#

I'm not sure, but I think they had in mind to ahve the keyscan to be atleast 1000hz

#

It can be, just a matter of when/if he has time to work on it

#

Why do you think the poker isnt scanning as fast?

#

Interesting

#

It could be both debounce + scan tho

#

I've tried the test you speak of, I can get 1ms and 2ms occasionally on Wooting

#

Ive only seen 1

#

it was linked here by someone

#

And I got 1-2ms a few times

#

Ahh

#

Could you link both I'll test again, that was on beta firmware which had higher scan than public

#

I tried the online one

#

Ehm how do I use this , it doesnt report ms

#

and it says "USB ID: 009" and "USB SPEED: LOW" what the hell ๐Ÿ˜›

#

Yes I just double checked with usbview, says fullspeed

#

but ek software says lowspeed lol

#

got one 4ms result just now

#

yes, alot of 6's and 5's

#

another 4ms :p

#

Yupp

#

I'm hoping he has some news what's the current scan rate, and whether it will be 1000hz soon?

#

but it was mx cherry

#

If it's compatible with Optical tech, yeah ;D

#

Or you're limtied to digital mode idk

#

If Optical mode is the bottleneck, they should add a tickbox on "Digital Mode" with higher Scan rate ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

#

exactly!

#

But in any case, I think Jeroen has an Oscilloscope to see the whole latency of Wooting's

#

yeah, let's ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

lethal wasp
#

I can only get 8 or 16ms on my POS qpad, beat that T_T

fickle ore

you should try the EK test

my polling rate is offically 125hz btw

#

the shitty debounce/polling seems to help in that regard

fickle ore
#

Its a nice feeling, when you know you won't get doubleclicks. I always have that in my head with my mouse now, not keyboarda nymore

lethal wasp
#

I've never had an issue with it

#

on mice either

#

I understand why it happens

fickle ore
#

I know my mouse will break in 1-2 years like they always do

It's really good. But you can always improve products further ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

fickle ore

That would really improve the typing speed, I think. Yep Asian

lethal wasp
#

I think it's more a question of finger control personally

#

I never noticed much of a difference outside of noise

#

I actually prefer it without

#

and for the record

#

I hate keyboard sounds lol

fickle ore
#

When you reduce to travel distance, you improve speed. Otherise if you had for example mx speed with 1.2mm actuation, you would then have 2.8mm travel without nothing happening - uptravel and down travel

lethal wasp
#

yes but you're choosing to bottom out

fickle ore
#

losing time there ๐Ÿ˜„

lethal wasp
#

if you're typing lightly then it shoudn't have much impact

fickle ore
#

I think mx speeds have like ahh.. 3mm bottom out instaed of the usual 4mm?

lethal wasp
#

I'm convinced it's more skill/focus based than hardware limitations

#

past a point of course

#

unless it's more of an indirect thing

#

like calming OCD in a way lol

#

some people care or worry about useless crap and it limits them so much, myself included

#

if you're thinking about ohhh, I need o rings, I need lube etc

#

you're never giving 100% focus to the task in hand

fickle ore
#

I don't think about that when I game, I only think it sometimes if I want to improve my setup ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

lethal wasp
#

on a subconsious level maybe

#

like people who tweak their system vs people who don't know or care

fickle ore
#

Tweaking really helps so much at high fps. Me and my friend have the same PC, however mine's stripped win10. The stuttering he gets compared to me at 200+fps its really incredible

lethal wasp
#

now people who can stream 300 bpm on the other hand, I could see a case for :p

#

I'm not saying it doesn't help

#

but the people who are top percentile are rarely as neurotic as us

#

like there are people who think you can't play well with a 3310 sensor

fickle ore
#

Doubt that, many seem to change mice all the time, some pro's have custom frankenmouse made for them.

lethal wasp
#

the most commonly used brand is zowie however

#

which use a 3310 sensor

fickle ore
#

new zowie's with 3360 coming

lethal wasp
#

yes, but they're not the norm or in circulation

#

point being

#

the most commonly used sensor at LAN is probably the 3310

fickle ore
#

yea well because shape > sensor I guess ;D

lethal wasp
#

exactly

fickle ore
#

But I'm gonna take a guess accuracy is gonna get better all the time due to new hardware... on average

lethal wasp
#

ahh

#

but FPS games require a fraction of the aim they used to

#

which is highly ironic given the recent hardware advances

fickle ore
#

True.

lethal wasp
#

we have 240hz strobing screens, optical keyboards, 3360 mice

#

and we either preaim, strafe aim or cast abilities

#

10/10

fickle ore
#

And we have mouse without delay on clicks too.. that alone is like the biggest thing ever

lethal wasp
#

it's been pretty normal for years

#

almost any logitech mouse ever made for instance

#

only zowie had their wave of autistic mice

#

and a few third world oddities

fickle ore
#

I used to use razer and zowie.. Only switched to logi circa 2014

lethal wasp
#

razer and zowie are superior ergonomically though

#

and logitech use braided cables

#

so they don't know shit about ergonomics lol

#

my room gets very humid

#

and it makes cloth pads unusuable when it peaks to like 70-75%

#

all except my goliathus control

fickle ore
#

Move to hybrid mousepads. I did that ages ago

lethal wasp
#

which is the only cloth pad that's uneffected by it

#

I used a shidenkai but it just spits glass dust everywhere and looks like I wiped my arse with it

#

yet I keep a really clean workstation

#

I havn't seen anyone using hybrid pads

fickle ore
#

hybrid pads taht are plastic/cloth mix I find work really well.

lethal wasp
#

most people use a zowie g-sr

#

but iirc that's polyester or something

#

which gets REALLY slow in humid environments

fickle ore
#

Yeah it probably has a weave

#

You want something without weave

lethal wasp

wut

#

the waffle weave on my goliathus is the only thing making it usable

#

havn't you used one?

#

a goliathus control

#

the weave is MASSIVE

#

you can see it from like half a meter away

fickle ore
#

I want uniformity in all directions on my mousepad.. Weave can't do that

lethal wasp
#

what pads have you used?

fickle ore
#

I've used some artisan mousemats in the past, and I got so pissed at the dust/hairs within weave.

lethal wasp
#

I've used umm

#

Qck+, Puretrak Talent, Razer Goliathus Control, Zowie Spawn?, Allsop Raindrop, Artisan Shiden-kai, Qpad FX

#

all of the fine weave pads feel almost the same

#

the goliathus control is completely different

the shiden-kai was like ODing on meth

#

how does the wooting feel compared to an mx red out of curiosity?

reef patrol

My Ergodox was definitely a curiosity. In part to see how hard it was to solder and assemble my own keyboard, and to see what these boards were for.

#

The red flaretech switch feels pretty similar. The blue feels like a blue. Slight weight differences, but nothing major.

lethal wasp

I've seen some people say they couldn't tell the difference if their life depended on it

It doesn't feel overly different to any of my MX red keyboards.

Really? I don't get that at all. My Ergodox uses Gat Clears.

lethal wasp
#

I've never used gaterons

#

afaik keycap height changes it alot

#

I just found it contributes to noise sometimes that's all

#

mine is in production atm, the kb that is, not the dampening

#

I'd imagine there could be a wooting 1.1 with changes like that in the future

#

but with more finesse of course

#

I wonder what a foam/rubber underside could do for stopping desk noise

#

putting a mouse mat under my kb makes it much quieter

#

rubber is grippy but it transfers too much energy

reef patrol
lethal wasp
#

I'm using a silicone mouse pad however

minor shale
#

Feels like a solution looking for a problem, tbh, unless you're looking to cram as many workers into as small of cubes as you can. ๐Ÿ˜‰ If my keyboard was 5" thinner, the space it saves isn't particularly useful space. The area between my mousepad and the keyboard would just be slightly more empty.

teal wharf
#

I can have my mouse closer to my other hand, making it more ergonomic for me

#

So I don't have to reach for my mouse

minor shale
#

ya lack of a numpad would drive me to murder

teal wharf

I also used to think that I really need a numpad but as I got myself a bigger mousepad I realised that I need to do something to make these to peripherals more closer together

So I dumped the numpad

minor shale

#

@digital cliff I've been curious about that every since running into this thing.. so, in the set of all PC users that play games there's a split between those who only do that and those that use their expensive general purpose machine as intended. You think the former is the majority?

teal wharf
#

I work at a software company and I don't really use my personal computer to do any real work

minor shale
#

ya, I consider IntelliJ entertainment software ๐Ÿ˜„

teal wharf
#

tbh I'm still adjusting to a tenkeyless keyboard

minor shale
#

@digital cliff also, funny thing that makes me even more odd, I guess, analog isn't even the driving force behind wanting the keyboard.

#

the idea of a mechanical keyboard with a linear switch that won't drive me insane with chatter issues is so freaking appealing I had my wallet out before I even saw the price ๐Ÿ˜„

#

I have two old func boards (now the "gear" brand in my pic) and a corsair k70 rgb sitting in a pile, all MX Red's, all developed chatter issues inside of 6 months.

#

The one I'm using now is MX Brown. Browns have a weird mushy feel, but are still an improvement over non mechanical and at least have a much older and more proven design. No chatter issues yet.

#

I'm sure it's some combination of the design of linear switches being prone to debounce issues and the firmware of those brands being too aggressive. I wasn't willing to spend several hundred $ figuring out which brands have good firmware for linear switch debounce handling.

#

But.. ya.. an optical sensor w/ sub-ms debounce specs and a linear switch was enough to sell me on the idea. Adjustable actuation and analog capability just sweeten the deal.

#

@digital cliff See, I sit proper at a PC.. at a roughly 45 degree reclining position, feet up on a stool, stomach halfway under the desk.. barely need to bend my elbows to use the keyboard and mouse ๐Ÿ˜„

#

oh ya, btw, another reason this keyboard appealed to me is because it is the antithesis of "gamery" aesthetics. Don't sell yourselves short.

#

it isn't horribly gaudy, doesn't look like a transformer, etc

#

the RGB lighting thing I wouldn't call "gamery", backlit keyboards are common. The ability to set the color per key is just a nice bonus.

#

If you want to see "gamery" aesthetic, just to go logitechs "G" series product page. You may need to wash your eyes out with soap after.

#

I definitely wouldn't count the Wooting's aesthetic as "niche".

fickle ore
#

So basically, I'm getting avg. 270fps in overwatch no matter the resolution, 1920x1080 or 1280x768.. That means I'm GPU bound right? Or CPU bound? Basically all options off/low and high perf texture filtering in nvidia settings

reef patrol
#

With what hardware? ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

#

I suggest you run a GPU and CPU overlay from something like Afterburner and look and see if it's the GPU being pushed to 100% or the CPU being mostly busy.

fickle ore
#

I7 2600k and gtx 1060, ddr3 ram at 2133 cl10

#

gpu usage is around 95-100%

#

cpu usage is 70%

reef patrol
#

Then technically it's the GPU that's holding you back from last 20-30fps till you hit the engine limit of 300? fps

#

One thing to note - You can't trust the CPU percentage in games, since most games won't be using all of the cores fully. You may need to run some logging tools to see if any cores are being completely filled. Just for future checks ๐Ÿ˜„

fickle ore
#

let me check that real quick

#

Okay, a few cores are at 90-95%, some at 70%, two at 30-40%

reef patrol
#

That actually looks like it could be the CPU too. The 2600K is starting to show its age - have you overclocked it? ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

fickle ore
#

Yeah man it's only at 4.3 atm. I used to run it 4.7 but its kinda old, wanting to save it until I see something real upgrade worthy ๐Ÿ˜„

#

Hmmh, seems like both could be the culprit lol.. Guess I have to upgrade soon ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

#

How do you identify a RAM bottleneck? My friend is running basically the same setup, he's getting like 100 lower avg fps.. We have attributed that to the RAM, which he's running at 1600mhz.. But we aren't sure.

reef patrol
#

The 1060 should keep you running most games at High/Ultra at 1080 resolution till next year. Then you may have to compromise a bit on settings.

#

RAM could be an issue, but it's hard to tell for sure unless you swap RAM and crosscheck. DDR3 is odd like that.

fickle ore
#

Aight, and there's probably no reason to spend any on DDR3 at this point

#

Thanks, I'm keeping the 1060 until something that I want to run at max settings comes along ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

reef patrol
#

No definitely no reason to invest in DDR3 now. RAM and SSD prices are really high at the moment, so you may want to hold off on a big upgrade for a while still. But I'd probably upgrade the motherboard, CPU and RAM first (all at once, required these days), and then decide if you're going budget friendly gaming with a Ryzen or get one of the new Intels with 6 cores.

fickle ore
#

Yeah the prices have gone up for RAM, that's one of the reasons I'm holding off. I kind of want a 8 core cpu, since I am those ppl that upgrade once in every 5-10 years ๐Ÿ˜„. It's either going to be Ryzen 2 or if Intel decides to make 8 core consumer CPU without pigeon poop!

reef patrol
#

I'm running a 1700 @4Ghz with a 1080, and I can definitely see my CPU bottleneck some games compared to an Intel. That last gigahertz or so really matters for getting the maximum frames.

I think so, but apparently AMD have better minimum framerates than intel, but lower avg/max.. dunno what to make of it

reef patrol
#

Definitely lower max. I probably lose out on 2-30fps max FPS compared to an overclocked i7.

solar hinge
#

@digital cliff do you know if you can change that?

#

So it sends numpad codes instead of the numberrow stuff

ashen spindle
#

so, anybody know if there is a fix for iphones not wanting to work with USB3? and not I dont have usb2 ports to use instead

ashen spindle

I can charge it, the phone recognizes its connected and ask for my code if I want to trust the pc

but I cant acess teh phone from the pc

#

well I can see it recognizes the apple usb driver but even reinstalling that isn't changing anything

#

all I want is access the pictures to drag them to my pc :/

solar hinge

Don't you need ituned to do anything with it?

#

You can't use anything like file Explorer

#

Or is that what you meant

ashen spindle
#

no you can use file explorer to access images and such

well, unless its not recognizing the phone

weird though, it never worked with my wife's iPhone :p

solar hinge
#

@reef patrol what is the difference between IPS and AH IPS?

#

i mean, in real life use

reef patrol
#

There is no such thing as IPS really. AH-IPS is just one variant of IPS. There's like 7 or 8 different ones.

#

The differences are very small for the most part, except for the really high end panels.

solar hinge
#

yeah i thought it was like that, but on alternate.nl it only says IPS or AH IPS

which is weird

Which monitor?

oh so you're prepping for a build. Uhh I'd check with somebody who keeps up on that stuff like maybe @reef patrol but my guess is that prices will eventually drop.

All depends on how long you're talking though

Which kits are you looking at? You can track the prices for some through PCpartpicker

I don't expect prices to really come down in the next months

Wait a bit for RAM. Prices are supposed to go down a bit, since Samsung is ramping up production

This is going to be a GREAT week. Two PSUs burned out.

halcyon moss

..how?

reef patrol

One is technically not burned out, but the long, 4part SATA cable is dead, and making a new one is pricy and bothersome. Been wanting to replace it for a while, since having one SATA isn't an option.

The other one died today...how? Not sure yet to be honest.

The first one is just what happens. It's not exactly a brand new PSU. The second one is a bit more odd. Hoping I can get it replaced.

ashen spindle

is there any reliable software that tells me how much power my system uses or are voltmeter still the only realiable way for that?

reef patrol
#

You gotta go hardware for that. Software is never accurate.

ashen spindle
#

yeah guessed so, which is the most accurate software for cpu temps?

reef patrol
#

Pffft... hard to say. If you have a new'ish motherboard, some apps work better than others. Sometimes they haven't been patched to properly read the sensors on specific chipsets. I generally use HWinfo 64, since it has a TON of info, but you can use anything really. AIDA, CAM, Speccy.

ashen spindle
#

using core temp and open hardware monitor right now, second one is showing one of my cores at 100C while the others are at 22-39 so I expect that to be wrong but would like to make sure and check with somethine else lol

reef patrol
#

That sounds odd. If I saw that big of a temp difference between cores (even if only one was fully punished, and the others idle), they should line up more, since they heat each other up.

Could be a damaged sensor, giving off a bad reading. Not common but happens.

ashen spindle
#

well only only one tool is showing it at 100 so (and for the reasons you mentioned) I think its just that tool not beeing accurate

reef patrol
#

Ah. Then yes - It's probably not reading the sensor probably. They aren't really a standard, so you gotta get the specs every time a new chipset comes out and adapt your software.

main stream
solar hinge
#

just a question, but can that shit do anything useful? i mean, for normal users it's definitely not useful, but for like overclockers etc, do heatspreaders and fans for ram actually do anything?

#

and were they even useful in the past or just a complete gimmick?

reef patrol
#

They are 100% pointless and have been for years. Same with heatsinks on RAM.

#

If you're doing insane overclocks with liquids, you might have a tiny use case, but for mere mortals, they don't cool RAM down below what they are perfectly happy operating at.

solar hinge
#

you did say "and have been for years", was there a use for them in the past?

reef patrol
#

Oooold RAM got hotter. RAM has become more efficient.

@reef patrol how can i test my SSD if it has gone to shit?

reef patrol
#

The first thing is to check and see if the SMART test is reporting errors

solar hinge

I'm doing the windows reset and see if that works

reef patrol

Aside from a quick sensor test like the SMART, you gotta read the entire drive, which takes... an hour? in windows from an app

solar hinge
reef patrol

Uh oh

solar hinge

I need to pull both my SSDs

Too empty out the working one and install windows on it

reef patrol
solar hinge

Convenience mostly. Lets me download a ton of new windows Isos without having a pc turned on. Also let's me take a Nas with me to places, and avoiding throttling my home connection.

Our work internet is so slow that a couple of windows update on customer pcs cripple the connection. Not fun when you're using remote POS systems. This way I can send them overnight remotely and get them ready offline
