Is it faster to bring a mage switch to freeze or is bowfa only efficient? Also is it worth bringing RCB and sapphire bolts (mithril) or do I just camp bowfa at that point

It's faster to bring a mage switch for melee phase, don't freeze. Use thralls.
It's especially good if you have da4+duke tele unlocked.
You want to bring rcb + sapphire for smite yes.

you need pretty good gear for mage to be worth the effort

#

and if its scuffed enough (ie no occult magic fang) it might even just plain be worse
