I just beat SOTE at 78 mage but i seem to miss a lot at cg, what would be a good way to level my mage? I only have dust devils for burst tasks so it takes too long

Think i went in at 85 ranged 77 magic it should be doable but i did only t2 preps
alching, bursting is probably not an option since you probably don't have the gp rn to splurge on runes just yet

Max hit doesn’t scale with magic levels at CG, any levels gained will be marginal dps afaik. 78 should be fine but as others have said, alching while doing other activities is best.
