I'm just curious what methods there are to maintain a cannonball stack early game, im nearly through my first 10k and I'm completely out of iron/coal

Cannonballs are not really worth it for irons, just do the tasks raw
But now that that bullshit is out of the way, let's talk about cannonballs!
There isn't really a good way to fund them early on. The best way you're going to get it is buying ore and coal from Blast Furnace, which is so slow. At least Zalcano has collection log slots. There's also Konar tasks, but you could spend a long, long time looking for only a few hundred bars. I guess Rex drops a few dozen of them noted as a 1/128, so pick them up while going for your Berserker Ring? Iron ore drops are out of the question for you for a while because the only way you're getting coal is from revenants until you can fund Miscellania.

early game + cannonballs is not a thing. Not even if you want to stretch the definition of inefficiency to be honest.
Not technically worth making even in late game, but I do anyways, because I dont mind some of my downtime being inefficient, and they help with some stuff in lategame far more than they do earlier on.

Muspah, Nex, and the wildy bosses drop cannon balls, but not really enough for actual sustained usage. I believe most people just use them for smoke tasks. None of those are early game at all though, so I suppose all this is irrelevant.
Cerb does as well technically, albeit only 50 at 1/32, and sire as well actually drops a lot if u are a clogger
