release 1 is going to be focused on breeding and raising healthy, happy chickens, rabbits, and cattle. there are several domestic breeds per species that you can breed from their wild ancestor: junglefowl for chickens, cottontail for rabbits, and auroch for cows.
check their tameness stat with a stud book, and breed animals with higher and higher tameness till you get 75-95% depending on species; once you do, you'll get a domestic breed! ancestor animals will still produce items for you, but they are much lower quality than a breed designed for that purpose.
what breed you get depends on the biome you're in; different biomes make for differently adapted breeds with different base stats. animals can have stats that decide how much meat and hide they drop, how fast babies grow, and even different egg colors, so keep that in mind when you decide what you want to breed. leghorns lay lots of eggs, but rhode islands reds have better meat. stats generally average between the parents, with a chance for random "mutation."
you can also find crops to feed yourself and your livestock. wild versions of crops spawn uncommonly: just break one, and plant the food you get on farmland or on a crafted trellis block. there are also crop bushes you can grow similar to sweet berries, as well as all-new fruit trees.
