I don't think he's overrated as an on ball defender, but I think people overrate what his defense brings to the team concept. He hounds guys and gets under their skin, but being a point/wing defender only gets you so far since you're only guarding one guy and all these teams have multiple stars. There's a whole lot of other very intricate/confusing nuances about the game but the tldr is that bowler tries to hit the sticks behind the batsman (wicket) to get him out, and the batsman tries to prevent that and get the ball as far from the bowler as possible. If the ball is caught BEFORE it hits the ground, batsman is out
Unlike baseball though there are usually exact numbers of runs you can get from hitting the ball. There's a boundary circle you'll see in some videos: if the ball hits that and doesn't go over, that's automatically 4 runs. If it goes over it, that's automatically 6 runs. technically if neither of those are achieved and the defending team is picking up the ball, there's no limit to the amount of runs that can be scored from one ball, but unless the defending team lack hands, it's unlikely you'll get more than 3/4. As a batsman you have to be careful because if you're not in batting position when the ball is returned to the bowler, you're also out
