Just a short synopsis

Well, the young Malazan Empire which is under the rule of a new empress after the assassination of the previous emperor is expanding its territory. The story is about the wars and conflicts this empire and it’s Malazan marines are involved in (for the most part) across multiple continents, and how these are connected to a much greater overarching conflict that involves the gods and demigods of this world.

If there’s a reason that sounds vague it’s because I can literally only say so much about the overarching plot without spoiling the series

As you go on there will doubtlessly be stories and characters that don’t immediately resonate with you as much. Things will seem slow or ponderous. Muscle through it.

There is definitely a mindset you need to enjoy Malazan. Which is why I say it’s not for everyone.

my problem with malazan is that regardless of how good the story or worldbuilding is, if I'm not invested in the characters then it becomes kinda hard to follow thru

which is a big problem when you have a shit ton of characters and even more being introduced in every book

some of them are hit or miss for me but the ones that hit are godlike like the book1 || bridgeburners, anomander rake and his moonspawn || or book 2 || coltaine || etc

Understandable. Erikson kind of keeps the characters at arms length a lot of times as well. Fortunately a lot of the big names are persistent in throughout most of the series ||(Quick Ben, Fiddler, Kalam)|| and there were enough major characters I liked in each major area that I never lost interest ||(Rake, Gruntle, Itkovian, Karsa, Trull, Tehol, etc.)||

||Coltaine and the Chain of Dogs is one of the most badass things in fantasy period|| Deadhouse Gates

Goes back to what I mentioned earlier, there is so much going on in this series that not every character or storyline is going to immediately resonate with you

Particularly some of the characters that are divorced from a lot of the action and exist primarily to make a point about compassion or cultural themes
