And like anything, you get more out of it and understand all the references being made if you watched it from the start. The episodes are also out of chronological order because it is an anthology series, but people have made lists online to help with that.

So Harley becoming a psycho Deadpool in the comics feels less authentic to her character who was very well defined.

My interpretation of the saying is that a lesser artist just copies something so directly that everyone notices it right away, a great one is like a good thief and tries to hide the inspiration in a clever manner but people who know what to look for can spot it.
But a thief is like a pirate in this instance, whether you view it as an inherently negative comparison depends on your value system I guess.

Why are people so ocd about this? Watch 1 season, if you like it keep going. If you don't stop. You don't have to finish every series that you start. Plus, Adventure Time changes and evolves a lot as a show so I can't actually tell you if you would like the beginning compared to the show at the end. Almost two different shows.
But I think it is worth it. It never becomes Steven Universe, dreadful and overly syrupy in its messages.
I heard it was coming back on Netflix or something, so 11 seasons soon.
