It's just marketing/social engineering.
By releasing a design they knew was already disliked(as it leaked last year), they take advantage of how volatile and angry the internet can be about these things. So the Sonic movie gets spread all over, and everybody talks about it. Few days later, studio comes out and says they'll change the design(Something that would cost millions to do), when they likely only made that (poor)design for posters and the one trailer. This ends up with more free advertising, this time positive. And people of the internet feel like they've won against some big corporation. A bonus with that tactic, is that people tunnel vision so hard on the one issue they've fabricated, that they forget about everything else that could be wrong with the film.
