I think the thing with Avatar selling so well was due largely to people getting on the hype train. Like yeah it was a solid movie but the story itself was hardly ground breaking. Think at a certain point people just started hyping it up once it got close to 1 bill to push it past the mark, then at a certain point when they saw it was still popular they saw that it was getting close to being the first movie in 2 decades to it 2 billion at which point peeps were feeling like doing their part to reach that it that makes sense, and after it did and there was only Titanic in front of it for the #1 spot all time that just ramped things up 10 fold.
