The Origin of the Half Moon People
Around 1,100 years ago, the Shandians, together with the Birkans and Skypieans, left the moon and traveled to Earth. While the Birkans and Skypieans remained in the sky, the Shandians settled on Jaya in the Blue Sea. When the World Government invaded, only a few survived. Those who remained dedicated their lives to protecting the Poneglyphs and preserving their history.
It wouldn't be surprising if the D clan originated from the Shandians. The term “People of the Half Moon” is quite fitting, as they could have been the offspring of Shandians and humans. This union suggests that the current bearers of the initial “D” may have Shandian ancestry.
The D bearers share certain resemblances with the Shandians, particularly Dragon, whose tattoo bears a striking similarity to theirs. That is likely not a coincidence. Gaban once mentioned that many mixed-blood races existed, which may have referred to them. The “D” name could have begun with these people, carrying a special meaning that faded over time as their descendants were persecuted and unable to pass down their legacy, much like how Oden could not pass his knowledge to Momonosuke and Hiyori.
Over generations, their descendants gradually lost their distinct physical traits, retaining only the name as a way of preserving their heritage. Its original meaning faded with the passage of time.
This could explain why, in his youth, Dragon wore an armband marked with a tattoo resembling that of the Shandians. Later in life, he moved the symbol to his leg and eventually to his face, honoring his origins and keeping the memory of his lineage alive.
Shanks may also embody this deeper connection. His fate is closely intertwined with the mysterious "D" lineage, much like Gol D. Roger, who served as a surrogate father figure to him.
Both Teach and Shanks are often portrayed as two sides of the same coin. Their shared background, the scar that Blackbeard gave Shanks, and their long-standing rivalry highlight a clash of opposing ideals. Each recognizes that a future confrontation between them is inevitable. The clock is ticking, and the race for the One Piece nears its end.
Shanks also holds a special place in Luffy’s story. Luffy deeply respects him, seeing him as both a mentor and the spark that ignited his dream to become a pirate. Shanks played a pivotal role in guiding the “chosen” Devil Fruit to its destined wielder and entrusted Luffy with his iconic straw hat, a symbol that became central to Luffy’s very identity. In many ways, Shanks is as much of a honorable "D" member as Sabo is "Sa D. Bo."
It is also said that Shanks once returned to the Holy Land but chose to live among ordinary people instead, staying true to his roots. This decision mirrors the Shandians’ descent from the moon to make the blue planet their home, a powerful reflection of Shanks’s humility and connection to the world below.
