try doing 3D work

recognizing form and how light interact with them
is very helpful in painting/drawing lighting in general

any other way you can learn form, material work, things like ambient occlusion and cast shadows, highlights, reflection, all can work as well. but I find doing 3D work makes this things very obvious

also. use reference. as always. no point in doing guess work
when the world exist for us to observe
