it's very rudimentary claiming, as-in, it creates a WG regions and adds everyone in the guild to that region... that is all (the radius of the region can be defined in the configs)

Ahh ok, so im assuming with the plugin if someone claims land, and you dont link it to world guard. The land will be claimed, however other people will still be able to mine in that area?

No, worldguard is a dependency. You can't claim without it.
