It's actually rather simple to create a server sided gamerule to toggle between the mechanics.. Then, whilst they're at it, they can add a bloody transfer packet (like they have in Bedrock) and that'll see guys update

Mojang is currently actively working to fix this vulnerability. Personally I would recommend not changing your skin until reports of this being patched.
