java bytecode is designed for java, so everything you write in java, is converted to the corresponding bytecode for that language feature (actually this is a lie, cough generics, but whatever). Kotlin on the otherhand, introduces a bunch of new language features that java doesn't have, and therefore has to convert those new features back into java bytecode, or implement said functionality using runtime semantics, either of which will undoubtedly be slower than simply being able to extend the bytecode interpretation itself (which kotlin obviously can't do)
