So it's literally just a type clash

In the case of interoping with other jvm based languages it can't always verify that the type is nullable or non null

So in the case of mixing Java and kotlin, it's possible to get NPEs

A decent way to jump into the language is to build something fairly simple in Java, then use IntelliJ's "convert to Kotlin" feature.
