Haven't done this here or in Spigot for reasons previously stated - switching metrics wouldn't really provide an accurate picture (although better on Bungee than Spigot, because at least here most are updated), and if we did switch it would have to be to a service we control to prevent future issues.
Having the metrics run in the background and fail silently (which is what it does) doesn't harm the server, which is why its still in at all.
If we were to change stat tracking it would be to our own service.
At this point its really irrelevant as to whether or not MCStats.org is up or not. We'd never get useful data from another service because people never update, so we may as well try and take what MCStats has.

I'm going to be rolling my own fault tolerant, distributed system, for Spigot & Bungeecord at least. Almost since it started, MCstats has been plagued with *everything* being wrong with it, including the worst uptime record in history. I don't have much faith in the people who are going to be taking it over, and I think that they are mostly in it for the popularity and the service will soon die again.
I'm already looking at spreading the service across 4 geographically disparate datacentres to ensure 100% uptime no matter what happens.
