I’m curious why you -1’d, is it just you dislike it or is it something about it?

Mainly just wanting feedback about it

Heyo, any chat format plugins recommend?

Looking for bare bones, pretty much just needs to handle chat and do nothing else. I used EssXChat but now I removed EssX (and don't have another essentials type plugin)

implementing scrollable elements had me graphing error to figure out how to fix it 😭

blazing oar
solar sinew
#

i figured out a way to do them without texture generation

which has been the biggest thing

blazing oar

Mostly the part of hiding parts of the entries that should be hidden

#

Besides putting another display in front, there is not much I can think of

blazing oar

How th were you doing them before lol

blazing oar
#

All the ways I have worked on were pure "vanilla"

solar sinew
#

so i managed to get around that limitation

blazing oar

It does look like you do on the video

solar sinew
#

hiding not necessary though

blazing oar

With textures?

solar sinew
#

yea

blazing oar

Didn't know you could unrender them like that

#

I am not too experienced with textures

solar sinew

yea but it causes some weird alignment stuff

blazing oar
#

Oof

#

I think I am just gonna hide/unrender entries as soon as one of them colides with the borders of the pane

solar sinew
#

yea basically that

blazing oar
#

Ah, in the video it looked way smoother than that xd

solar sinew
strange estuary

By barebones I literally just mean a handler that I can config to look one way and one way only

#

I have interactive chat for the other stuff

In fact, I just finished making it so you can use discords formatting like * * Test * * to bold your text! (Pretend there’s no spaces)

blazing oar

#

I am trying to avoid that

#

either way project has been slow af, with irl work I barely got any time xd

#

I am also working on the Hangar redesign concept

#

sooo

solar sinew

i feel like that leaves a lot on the table

#

there is a few other things i do that are possible with rp generation that are very useful

blazing oar

fair

solar sinew
#

i implemented a certain type of data interpolation from just reading research papers. Did it take me 3 days of constant work? Maybe. but does it work? yes, and now i have a much better understanding of many new concepts

#

also rp gen is rlly easy if you're just dealing with textures

#

only hard part for me is i am not handling some stuff correctly so i have to sync up algorithms to generate the same indices for font and language files

which is next on the "unfuckify" things to do

the thing you cant pass from parent to child in svelte is another component, which react does let you do

xd

zenith mauve

i didnt by player input directly

#

i meant player favorites, player custom formats, etc

#

i serialize them like

#

c=asdads t=1 a=asdsa

#

and can be long

blazing oar
#

why?

zenith mauve
#

why what? xd

blazing oar
#

why not simply use a DB?

zenith mauve
#

i am

blazing oar
#

uh

zenith mauve
#

i was asking how to save it in db

#

without using too much space

#

maybe compressing or smth

#

as base64 makes it longer xd

blazing oar
#

that's like the least of your concerns

#

lol

zenith mauve
#

why? xD

#

i dont think you are even considering

blazing oar
#

because I'd bet 100 bucks no DB is gonna get big enough to be a problem

zenith mauve
#

i let players select the input

#

but thats the thing xd

#

why no? xD

#

according to internet

#

string can be compressed

#

from 2000 chars to 100 bytes

blazing oar
#

anything can be compressed to bytes by that logic

zenith mauve
#

but they won't have strings longer than 3k

blazing oar
#

but this sounds like plain premature optimizations

#

lol

zenith mauve
#

why premature? xd

#

changing the method after releasing the plugin

blazing oar
#

do you have DB problems that require you to optimize it?

zenith mauve
#

would be hard

#

no lol

#

its a plugin under development

blazing oar
#

then it is premature optimizations

zenith mauve
#

but if someone uses in large servers

#

i'll get errors there

#

plugin is almost finished

#

thats why im focusing on that rn xd

blazing oar
#

no large server will reach any big sizes

#

I don't think you understand how much data DBs can handle xd

zenith mauve
#

but if player saves 3000 strings

#

in 10 players

#

it will be 30k

blazing oar
#

any db handles 30k rows easily

zenith mauve
#

with strings of 3000 each?

#

without affecting performance?

blazing oar
#

that sounds like bad db design lol

#

going back to the XY, why in the world would players store that many strings

#

I have had DBs with like 4 million of rows anyways and seen dbs with even more without any problems

#

98% of the time, performance is dictated by your DB structure and queries

zenith mauve
#

basically, its a plugin where players select gradients of colors

blazing oar
#

if you do those 2 badly, performance will suck anyways

zenith mauve
#

to store them as favorite

#

so strings can be 10 hex colors long

blazing oar
#

so, they store 2 colors?

zenith mauve
#

10 - 15

blazing oar
#

why?

#

thought it was just a gradient

zenith mauve
#

why no? xd

#

it is

#

gradients can have more stops xd

blazing oar
#

I guess

#

lol

zenith mauve
#

thats the thing xd

#

i really dont wan to get issues in a future

#

if i can do it now xd

#

i dont usually release plugins

#

that get errors or might get errors

blazing oar
#

you can store colors as ints btw

zenith mauve
#

unless mc changes interfaces to abstract or viceversa

zenith mauve
#

thats the fun part

#

not only numbers

#

format contains

#

hex colors (10 - 15)

#

string part (modifiers &l &m &o)

blazing oar
#

ew legacy

zenith mauve
#

blazing oar

yes

zenith mauve

saving that

blazing oar
#

well, not rlly

zenith mauve
#

isnt more space?

kind sorrel
#

why do you care about a few more characters

blazing oar
#

^^

#

premature optimizations be like

zenith mauve
#

bc i can support legacy too

blazing oar
#

(you shouldn't)

zenith mauve
#

people is used to use /nick &6&lAlonso

blazing oar
#

only if your community is 1.8

#

(which again, red flag)

zenith mauve
#

not really

#

many servers still use legacy formats

#

as most plugin do

blazing oar
#

yeah, plugins stuck in time do

zenith mauve
#

they use legacy deserialize

#

thats what most communities use

#

at least for now

#

i need to go with the flow

#

idk if that the correct saying

blazing oar
#

anyways, you will only have performance issues if you structured your DB badly and do shitty queries

zenith mauve
#

like what?

blazing oar
#

otherwise, unless you are hypixel, you will never have problems

blazing oar
zenith mauve
#

shitty queries and db badly structured

blazing oar
blazing oar
#

there is no specific "bad schema/query" that I can give as an example since each DB is different

vagrant pike
#

what exactly are you storing? minimessage formatted text?

blazing oar
#

basically yeah

#

from what I understood

#

he lets players create gradient/color/decoration combos

#

that they can use

vagrant pike
#

idk

#

use postgres

#

slap "text" type

#

worry about the size later

zenith mauve
#

I store smth like this per favorite
c=AABBCC-AABBCC-AABBCC-AABBCC-AABBCC-AABBCC-AABBCC-AABBCC-AABBCC-AABBCC-AABBCC-AABBCC-AABBCC-AABBCC-AABBCC t=1 a=lmno

vagrant pike
#

idk that's like 160 bytes considering headers

#

1MB would be around 6.5k rows of these

#

do you have 6500+ players?

zenith mauve
#

I dont even have one

#

its for a new plugin

#

xD

vagrant pike
#

then you shouldn't be worrying about it

zenith mauve
vagrant pike
#

sure, that's around 600 rows

#

for 1MB

#

I don't see the issue

#

and ~670k rows for 1GB

blazing oar
#

Yeah

#

This is unnecessary ptemature optimizations

#

If you do the schema and queries right, you won't have any issues

#

Hell, I am doing a Homes plugin and I don't cache anything at all

#

Lol

#

I always make DB queries when doing things

#

Only thing cached is home names for tab completion

#

DBs can handle millions of rows and several hundred/thousand queries per second

#

Lol

vagrant pike
#

yeah, minecraft plugins are not something where you should worry about the database too much

craggy igloo

#

it used to take more to make the post than the plugin

blazing oar
#

meanwhile me stuck in a single plugin for a few weeks

#

xd

#

I really gotta stop procrastinating

zenith mauve
#

hopefully, all plugins make checks

#

so they dont fail even if you start in spigot/paper 1.8.8 - 1.21.4 (some, just up to 1.20.1)

#

however, the abstract to interface changes, really broke certain parts

#

so fixing them before updating

#

hopefully, if plugin was build using lower version than 1.20.4

#

they still run correctly in 1.21.4, so all good for now

blazing oar

I feel like if you’re building a commercial plugin, in the sense it’s a SaaS or whatever, it’s somewhat needed to support all versions if you want to maximise $$.

It isn’t too bad though if you’re building for the enjoyment

zenith mauve

#

ah wait

#

140k visits

#

okay that makes more sense

blazing oar
#

not like spigot lol

#

it's being discussed how it will be implemented, if hangar will be a middleman or not... etc etc

#

lots of legal things to do

kind sorrel
#

pretty sure they're more looking into the direction of private release channels and you can just add people to those then

blazing oar
#

but recently there have been talks about streamlining it a bit more

#

it's an ongoing topic

full atlas
#

I don't care for the "subscription" design some markets use. Like patreon.

vagrant pike
#

discussing how to implement X does not make it doing it "properly", thats just a default thing, someone makes the requirements and developer implements the code

#

as for being a middleman, thats up for higher ups to decide, both sides has its pros and cons

blazing oar
#

the whole topic is still an ongoing conversation MAINLY because of legal things

#

not tech limitations or whatever

#

then you have the fact you can simply allow payments through paypal like spigot does, which kinda sucks, you not handling any payments at all and using private channels, being the middleman similar to BBB, or other options

#

all have their pros and cons

#

hence the ongoing discussions

#

there is also the fact that Hangar is not as actively developed as for instance modrinth

#

it's fully collaboration based

yeah no every time i get imposter syndrome, i just think about the rest of the cs department at my university and think "they all got cs degrees too, so i'm fine" lol

vagrant pike
#

and dont really need more than 1TB at this point

#

thats most likely going to be an issue for older me, gonna be fine for now

vagrant pike
#

I was sweating my ass off to make it as polished as possible

#

and they got through with barely any frontend styling and the projects themselves were underwhelming

#

though they got graded like 5-7 where I got 10/10 lol

young mortar
#

yeah i just ended up making a django extension for a shitty photo submission system to the django website i had spent 2 years working on

#

so i literally whipped that shit up in like 2 days and was basically done for the rest of the semester

#

plus i had great groupmates who were willing to do all the boring shit like communicate with our project supervisor and write reports and shit

vagrant pike
#

did yall have group bachelors projects or you could chose between groups/individual?

young mortar
#

yeah it forced groups "to teach us teamwork" and shit

vagrant pike
#

none of us did group projects since the grading can be iffy, all of us did individual

#

but yeah there was an option for 2-3 person groups

vagrant pike
young mortar
#

yeah i suppose, i just haven't had any issues at all with ssd failure since they're not mechanical

vagrant pike
#

havent had any issues with SSDs in my personal computer but still

Its between Raid 6 and Raid 7 🤔

vagrant pike

tf is raid7

#

I probably could have done 2x MX500 ssds for raid1, but still that would have been around 160€ if new

#

whereas I got 3x 1TB HDDs for ~60€

young mortar
#

oh 3?

#

yeah i probably would've gone for the ssds, they'd last you much longer + being way faster + you could still do raid1

vagrant pike
#

yeah, probably gonna keep the 3rd one in case one of the two fails

young mortar
#

i mean for $20, they probably will lol

vagrant pike
#

no issues whatsoever

young mortar

hmm

vagrant pike
#

WD Caviar Black and Samsung HD103UJ

heard the samsungs are kind of unkillable lol, though that's probably some luck involved

some of the people were sharing their Samsungs have over 100K hours, some going for 12 years+

#

mine is nowhere near that yet

#

fingers crossed it lives up to the hype lol

young mortar
#

yeah i mean i've had nothing but great experiences with my samsung ssds

so if their hard drives are anything like that, you'll probably be fine

vagrant pike

probably the best SSDs on the market regarding price, reliability and performance

now i have a 2TB boot drive, a 1TB secondary drive and a 512GB SATA (all samsung)

strange estuary

I have a 250gb m.2 for boot, 1tb ssd for games and a 4tb hdd for misc

vagrant pike

i really just want a nice arch-based distro with a beautiful gnome setup, that's my dream

all that money for fake frames, how depressing

I don't care for AMD that much. I know its good for budget but I stick with intel.

vagrant pike

my next upgrade will definitely be full AMD build unless they somehow shits themselves

young mortar

except for like 12th gen, 9-11th were horrible value and mega over heated

theyre like similar priced now

and 13th and 14th have mega instability issues that just destroys your cpu

at least AMD still does a lot of full core moderately well priced CPUs and doesn't shit itself

Could you tell I only look into Intel? LMAO

yeah i'd definitely go with AMD cpus at least right now

mellow zinc
#

open mindedness is always good

young mortar

GPUs is a little weird, AMD still lacks a lot of features but makes up for it in pricing and linux compat, Nvidia is better raw power and DLSS and shit so that's what I went with

but honestly i'd love an AMD GPU in a few years or something to go along, i think having a double GPU setup would be great for a bunch of work stuff and for linux stuff, etc.

vagrant pike

is dual gpu still a thing nowadays

not like SLI dual gpu

vagrant pike

would of been nice if the dual gpu technology didnt die

wouldnt have to throw away your old card

mellow zinc
young mortar

i mean i think it's just not feasible, the latency and coordination overhead just makes it not worth it for 99% of scenarios

vagrant pike

sadly yeah

young mortar

especially with an older/newer card, that's like having two different iterations of ram at the same time lol

vagrant pike

@long jasper Maybe consider additional conditions like "contains", "starts with" and "ends with".
I have these conditions in my plugin alongside equals, less than, more than, etc to give an idea:

  • =~ Equals (Case-insensitive)
  • !~ Not equals (Case-insensitive)
  • |- Starts with
  • -| Ends with
  • <_ Contains

Perhaps I should add variants for "starts with" and "ends with" that also ignore casing...

# strange estuary https://builtbybit.com/resources/asteroid-spoofer-exclusive-spoof.35033/

It’s funny, nothing like this existed until I built the first Spoofer. Then I sold it, and now it’s been forked into a million off brands.

Spoofing is beneficial, players see it that big player counts = more enticing to play. It’s sort of sheep herd mentality, if you google that.

Players want to go where others are. A server with 10 players looks more exciting than one with 7 or even 5.

I guess I’m bias as I was the first person to build such solution, but it is beneficial if done right. Servers are too competitive now, you’ve got to do these tactics even if “shady” if you want a chance at competing

magic summit
#

Well, yeah

#

But it can hurt your reputation in the long run.

#

If you join a server displaying 100 players, but you maybe encounter one or two that play and chat and stuff, you will eventually reliaze the faked player count, even if it is faked well.

#

And that will eventually spread, causing players to avoid your server, because why should one join a server that fakes their userbase?

strange estuary
magic summit
#

It's like faking discord nitro boost servers or whatever

strange estuary
#

The only reason players are the way they are is because of the dishonest practices

#

So players have unrealistic expectations

magic summit

Getting a ton of fake accounts to make a discord look big for people to join

magic summit

I wish mojang cared lol

magic summit

strange estuary
#

Instead of outlawing guns in the TOS (which they don’t even care if you actually have guns it’s all a lie) how about you uphold your current TOS

magic summit
#

Like you can see the same with youtube...

strange estuary
#

Might as well not have a TOS

magic summit
#

Like competition sparks innovation. But since there isn't any video platform with the reach and features (excluding a specific adult site obviously), they don't have competition and don't need to try.

strange estuary
#

Youtube can’t deal with those issues

#

They had way more important priorities
