Being able to still view the MFDs (especially the radar), the nav ball, etc. while zoomed in would make it a lot easier to maintain situational awareness while doing long-range railgun sniping.

what about seeing the zoomed view in the MFD and allowing you to see what’s going around you at the same time?

Yeah, making the actual zoom functionality be more diegetic rather than actually zooming the whole screen would work too.
