I mean, not every game has to have a combat top-notch system or filled with complex combos. This one has combos too, just not to that extent. It's simple and effective to me. The bosses have patterns, and as the game progresses, the characters gain more creative ways to engage in combat, for example, Hugo’s Totalized or Trigger/Pulchra’s Aftershock. They’ll definitely come up with even more innovative mechanics in the future.

To each their own when it comes to fun. You find ZZZ's combat barebones, and I agree but this is how they created it. I’ve also found ways to enjoy it. For example, there's Vivian’s auto-dodge, which I can use to stall time and set up Big Ben’s EX Special counter. Or Hugo combined with two stunners for a solid damage setup. I even use Corin who barely gets any mention for her anomaly fast build up while still doing decent damage. Then there’s the whole Astra mechanic I could talk about too. There's Nicole special for suck-in the mobs and stuff. It’s all about experimenting with team compositions.

There’s also an option to challenge yourself by turning off the visual cues, which is pretty tough since there are usually two bosses by that point. You can even push it further with the corruption thingy (w/e they called it) in withering mode. It’s not just button mashing, you actually have to manage distance, time your attacks, and think through your moves. I don’t know that’s just how I play it. I find the game boring at times too ofc but i don't feel the level of "chore" as of now.

They kinda slowly slip in some extra combat mechanic like some character needs to hold Square on their 3rd hit (on one of their choices to attack). They just need to work around on their limited inputs since Square and Triangle are their only form of attack (other than ex special) But yea agree the core combat does need some touch up
