#Is Snappy Driver Installer malware?

i dont think so?
i suggest running a MSRT / Windows defender scan.
and use resource hacker to see what its doing
I already scanned my computer with Windows Defender, Malicious Software Removal Tool and Malwarebytes. None of these detected anything thankfully. Maybe they only modified the drivers to include malicious code?
Any bit of software claiming to manage and speed up your drivers is a waste of your time. They source their drivers from unknown locations and make other shady changes to your system. At best they're snake oil, at worst they're malicious. They're generally considered a Potentially Unwanted Program (PUP) and should be uninstalled ASAP.
If you want to make sure your drivers are up to date, then let Windows Update or Device Manager deal with it. Alternatively, get the drivers yourself from the manufacturers' websites.
Snappy Driver Installer was popular and I think it downloads the drivers from the official websites, so... idk
(or atleast the original version used to before it got taken over by someone else)
that sounds like a lot of unknowns to me
whats wrong with device manager and just going to OEMs sites?
Snappy Driver Installer Origin is the fork before the take-over without all the malicious code
It's really complicated and not very user-friendly
I hate drivers so much.
Instead of visiting 2 - 3 websites you want to risk PUPs and potentially the wrong driver?
All you need is:
- Motherboard / PC manufacters support page
- Graphics driver from the relevant vendor
I don't think Snappy Driver Installer was considered to be a PUP
It's just that it changed ownership to someone else and proceeded to add malware to it, but there is a new version of it called Snappy Driver Installer Origin which has no malware
It's not as easy, I'm trying to find drivers for my lenovo G550 and I get this
I don't know what to download...
I'm pinging you in #legacy-stuff, this is EOL hardware
