you need to do a clean install

it's best practice to have a backup of irreplaceable files anyway so no time better than the present to start

that is certainly an option
not strictly a backup but it would work as a redundant copy of your files for when you clean install

You shouldn’t have a key that doesn’t have downgrade rights so yes, it should be fine
