Hi all! Today I started tanking (in general) on Prot Warrior after mostly playing DPS/healer. I recorded a run and would really appreciate any feedback if someone has time to take a look.

I'm mainly wondering things like: am I pressing the right buttons, does my defensive CD usage make sense, and how can I improve my gathering/pulling? That part still feels a bit awkward to me.

After watching the VOD myself I already noticed a few things I could do better, but I’d love to learn from more experienced Prot Warriors.

For context: on DPS I’m currently comfortable around +14/+15 keys, but since I just hit max level on this character and have basically no gear yet, I’m starting out tanking in +6s.

Thanks a lot in advance if anyone is willing to take a look! 🙂

So two quick things just looking at logs is only a 73% uptime of shield block and only 2 casts of Shield Charge. You also wasted rage a bit of using TC/SS at max rage from the bit of the video I've watched so far

Some notes from glancing over logs
-73% Shield Block uptime. You want to get that as close to 100% as possible, though a small amount of downtime is not out of the ordinary. Shoot for at least 90% to start

-Hit Shield Slam on cooldown in all situations. Your SS casts look a bit low

-Looking at melee hits, you only have 65% blocked hits. That means 35% of the melees you took were unmitigated damage. Part of this is shield block uptime, part of this is letting mobs get behind you. You want as close to 100% blocked hits as possible

-Your rage waste was pretty low, but could be lower. You never, ever want to cap rage. If you get above 70 rage, hit Ignore Pain as a dump

-A few times you rage-starved yourself. This is just as bad as rage capping. You never want to stall out your rage, try to balance between 20 and 70 at all times. When between 20 and 70, and while SS and TC are on CD, thats when you spend on Revenge for damage and to fish for SS resets

-Just a tip, leverage Wrecking Throw more. It does solid ST damage and has an interrupt. Its a great tool

Overall, far from a bad performance. Def some things to work on though, keep at it!

If you'd like me to share screenshots of where in the logs this information was found, I can do that as well

Hi, regarding your usage of defensives, I like that you use Shield Wall early and prio getting Shield Block up on the opening pull of the dungeon rather than waiting until you've lost half your health.

You aren't using Demoralizing Shout (24 casts) or Shield Charge (8 casts) enough, which is both a damage loss and survivability loss. Demoralizing Shout is 20% dmg bonus while it's up, so send it on cd. Shield Charge gives Shield Block for free, so only hold it if you can hit more enemies with it a couple seconds later or you are about to have Demoralizing Shout back. This will also help on your SB uptime, which again contributes to your overall damage.

You use Spell reflect actively, which is good to see. I noticed on Corewarden Nysarra during Umbral Lash you use Shield Wall, but not also Spell Reflect. Since it's magic damage and the biggest damage intake for you in that fight you can freely use it - potentially not even having to use Shield Wall, saving the charge.

Your use of Shockwave can be a little haphazard. At least I see you casting it at full health, with SW up and nothing casted by enemies. Try to use it more as an interrupt or brief window of relief if you are taking heavy damage.

On talents you can consider picking up Battle-Scarred Veteran over Shield Specialization as a safety net. Melee hits are steady damage and not what will cause you to drop. I also see you are not running the 3% leech talent in the general tree - why not?

For gathering Charge / Heroic Leap to the bigger packs and use Thunder Clap/Blast as your primary way to gain snap threat. Anything you don't want to Charge to you use Heroic/Wrecking Throw. Be mindful which add packs have casters and interrupt them as you pull, Wrecking Throw is particularly useful for pesky casters at range. The goal should be to get them all into one stack as quickly as possible, without dying, so you can pop your cooldowns and blast. Don't have it like the last add pack you did before Lothraxion.
