Hi there, I started play prot war few days ago and jumped in +10 with less than 650ilvl. I'm looking for advices to help me improve and start going into +12 and above.

I'm sharing you my warcraftlogs from a floodgate 10 with the POV video (you can mute it, anything really interesting to hear and we're speaking in french πŸ˜„ )

There is my few points I'm thinking about :

  • In this key, I died once, on the last 2 trashs before last boss. How did I should handled this ?
  • I think I can change some talents and adapt them for each key (for exemple the magic damage reduction on defensive stance should be good for floodgate)
  • I only have 75% uptime on shield block, don't know if I must be nearby 100% uptime, maybe take heavy repercussions talent ?
  • Maybe i'm casting to much ignore pain and waste some rage in it
  • How may I improve my DPS ? I feel it pretty low

Logs : https://www.warcraftlogs.com/reports/nRjdHXBVFGT29NP8
VOD : https://youtu.be/H92MG7ask3M
(PS, sorry for low quality, started without any settings. I didnt took time since I changed my PC. And I need to improve my UI πŸ™‚ )

Thx a lot for anyone who'll take time to look at it !

It'll be a hot minute before I can look into this in depth, but:

  • Yes, you should swap to Heavy Rep. You can use ITF when you have enough haste before ITF to ensure you can keep shield block up. That happens around 14-16k haste rating, iirch. You can technically get up to 100% blocked hits (which is a more valuable metric than SB uptime, but can only be viewed in logs), but realistically it ends up around 95% when playing well.
  • Your casts are very low overall; even your highest cast ability, Shield Slam, should have a higher CPM than it does. Your rotation also appears to be off for playing Colo; when in AOE, you generally SS when off CD, make sure rend is up with TC, then prioritize sending revenges until either SS comes up, rend drops, or you need to TC in order to stabilize your rage. If you're going to always prioritize TC like that, you'll probably get more damage out of playing Thane. IT also leads into the next issue of
  • Your rage generation is real low. You're likely sitting on SS resets, which is your biggest rage generator. Even with the low rage gen, you still managed to waste 666 rage, so 6 and half full rage bars. Essentially, you're not pressing enough IP for what you're pressing, as it's technically possible to waste 0 rage.

Ultimately, a lot of your issues stem from being unfamiliar with the rotation and not reacting in time at a quick glance. So sitting on SS resets, prioritizing the wrong button for your hero spec, etc. It'd probably help to do a crash reset course and spend like 5 mins on a dummy with either Wowhead or Icyveins open to try and get some of the muscle memory in

Big thanks to you for taking this time to put this in word and thanks in advance if you're going more in depth, I really appraciate that (and know how much time it took to do this)

  • I thought (about ITF) was a good thing to choose to make sure you have enough haste to fluidify the rotation. When Heavy Repercussions is the best way to learn how get 100% uptime on SB (thing I must do I guess haha). I'll check my haste rating but I'll try HR instead !

  • I took colossus because it seems, for me, really fun and grateful to play. In 10's I don't feel fragile enough to need more defensive like MT should do. But I read that MT is easier to learn, so maybe i'll give it a try πŸ™‚

  • The rage management is the most part I need to learn how to deal because so much time in AoE situation, I struggle with 100 rage, BS and IP up, SS reset, free Revenge's proc on hold, TC coming up etc etc. And, in the other hand, in IT scenaio I struggling generating rage and I feel really poor and struggle to maintain IP and BS at good rate.

From all of this point, I'm ok with your conclusion : I need more practicing on dummies and maybe taking more in depth look on how great prot war are palying

Heya ! Coming back with another dung in logs : rookery 12.

If anyone want to check on how it has been improved and how I can improve more.

There is 2 things I know I need to learn how to handle :

  • wasting rage, the window where you're 100 rage and got free revenge's proc, SS reset, not in execute range, full IP and SB up, how may I manage this ?
  • The rotation and priority in execute range because I'm sure I spend to much rage on execute and letting go my SB and IP to much, putting me in danger.

If anyone want to advice me on that, I'll be happy ! πŸ˜„

Before even looking at the log, for the two things,

You shouldn't care about how much value your IP has when evaluating rage. It's worse to waste rage than it is to press IP with a max absorb amount, as you're losing on all the value cycling rage gives you (all the CDR, healing if using indom, etc.) If you would overcap rage, you press IP. No need to consider anything else.

For execute, you only worry about it in two targets or less, and you want to always have GCDs filled. If Execute would drain your rage bar without anything else to press, don't press it. You can basically think of it as "If you have around 40-50 rage, press Revenge once, then Execute. Otherwise, Execute"

# wind locust About IP, we agree that it's out of gcd ? How works the absorb when pressing ? ...

Ignore Pain will give you an absorb shield based on your attack power at the time of casting, which is a summation of various stats. That amount will be added on to whatever Ignore Pain absorb shield amount you have. There's a cap on that value that is equal to 30% of your max HP. For example, if you have 1m HP, you can have a maximum amount of 300k that Ignore Pain will absorb. If you're at 295k on your absorb, and your IP press will give you 50k, you'd only get 5k of that absorb added. Like I mentioned, though, because of all the sources of IP we get, as well as the important of cycling rage for Anger Management and other talents, it's worse to lose consuming the 35 rage than it is to waste the 45k on the IP cast. So you don't need to worry about what your IP is at when pressing the button; just press it if your rage is high.
