How deep? I haven't tried endless rage spec but I went up to Mortal Strike then got Sweeping Strikes over in Fury. I haven't done any raids in this spec yet but been getting ~500 dps in Heroic groups and I have less than optimal pve gear. Plus you provide good damage mitigation with demo shout, thunderclap, disarm. And pummel for casters. Definitely overlooked class for heroics at least.

Your gemming and enchants makes no sense if it’s for pve tanking. Pure stam is the only way. Agi is useless and threat from crit does compensate for missing out on stam on the warrior tank. And if your legit pushing rating in arena fair to gem for crit but that still doesn’t explain 4agi/6stam gems or the meta. And if you are grinding rating I would advise using pve options so you can gem and enchant different for pve. I would suggest checking out tbc wowheads prot p2 bis list. It has 3 different setups: one with engineer, one without arena gear and one with arena gear

Is it super extra to get Dragonmaw for tanking? I have the mats for it and I already have Deep Thunder. I mostly just tank for my buddies for fun and not aiming to do anything super serious

Dragonmaw is very nice in heroics but any slow but hard hitting main hand will do the same job. For example mace from Illhoof or axe from Prince. That beign said for tanking some odd hcs here and there you'll be fine with Latros or any other easy to get 1h. The biggest + with dragonmaw is its crafted so you get it guaranteed, and should you ever find yourself playing fury or doing some solo farms as prot you won't be dissapointed having it.

hey everyone! hope you having a lovely evening (yes, its already 8 am here); i've a mostly bis warr but been play a lot with my prot pally and been having some fun not struggling with aggro on aoe pulls, but also hurting on gear (lots of shamms on my raid group), so im asking for advice.

I love warriors, love tanking with them, love going off dps but i hate their aoe, and also i hate that we need to change prot gear for threat gear because of rage so...what would you recommend, staying on my warr or pally? taking into account that p3,4 and 5

Imo prot paladin would also have issues with aggro with okay dps if they didn’t have salv. If you enjoy your paladin more though, then play that - if you want to take into account p3, 4 and 5 then both classes become irrelevant and the bear reigns supreme @thick fractal

20/31. get death wish at 61 and then continue in fury tree for either dw spec/hit talent/imp ww and last imp serker stance. if you are doing some dungeon tanking 60-70 3/3 tactical mastery in prot would be value. if you want to focus more dungeon tanking while leveling then skip arms altogether and get defiance/last stand in prot. imo alternating solo questing/some dungeon tanking it won't matter if you have impale+death wish or not. @ruby lynx

I seem to struggle with single target damage. Part of which I think is just due to lack of rage for the first half of the fight. Do you guys ever start a boss fight with a faster OH then switch to a slower OH when the rage and frenzy stacks start flowing? Or is this just a gear problem

@hidden ginkgo So I'm asking because I know that too get uncritable you need 332 Def I think it was, with the 20 Def skill we get as prot warrior which equates to 49.8 Def that means 283 Def from gear. And with the 332 Def that's 124 Def skill, which equals 4.9 miss/Block/dodge and parry+ 5% from parry talent so we are at 24.89 extra avoidance which is almost uncrushable with 330 Def with shield block, that's not accounting for any other dodge/parry/block values on gear that will definitely get us uncrushable with Shield block. So I asked because I'm trying to understand why so many warriors are running above 280 Def from gear, instead of going DPS gear for aggro? Specifically also trying to make our prot warrior running 500 Def understand this, as his threat generation is kinda poopoo. Any suggestions ?

hopefully simpler take on the matter @fervent otter:

shield block provides 75% flat block chance so you need a combined 102.4-75 block/dodge/parry. which you almost get being naked at lvl 70 with talents. this means any prot warrior wearing default gear will have solved it. easiest way to manage this is get the weakaura that does the calculation for you: https://wago.io/tfjhmaZB4 -> press shield block and if the crush value is green (slam icon) you're good.

since warrior can achieve uncrushable for free the main objective with defense/resilience is to become uncrittable and after that you stack stamina. certain bosses will eat shield block faster than it recharges and since it isn't feasable to go for "passive uncrushable" the objective is to have enough raw hp to survive a potential crush in worst case scenarios.

because 1 point of resilience rating provide more reduced chance to get crit than 1 point of defense rating it is more efficient route to achieve ucnrittable going for resilience. defense also has the downside of not only being less efficient per point it also adds dodge/parry/block which isn't needed since shield block by itself is covering your uncrushable needs. dodge as concept is low value since it makes your hp pool spiky (full avoid or full hits) and the downside of avoided hits mean no rage as well. parry is in similar boat as dodge but parry at least means you parry haste yourself. blocking reduces incredibly small amounts of dmg and its only upside is you don't get crushed but again, that is why you have shield block.

for threat stats prot warrior scales poorly. hit until cap and expertise after that is as good as it gets with armor pen being a possible future. buffs and debuffs cover most needs but pressing buttons correct will do the most. the arguably weakest threat is on pull and that is where pushing buttons correct and having engineering for sappers come in to play and not trading 1200 hp for 0,5 crit.

Hey guys, recently our warrior tank is receiving more crushing blows from bosses, which didn't happen before, his stats and gear are good. We realized that if he sits under the boss (like on top of him) he's crushed more, but instead if he tanks at a max range the boss prob on crushing him is lower. Any word on this? is this an intended mechanic?

If he is sitting far inside the model of the boss he is probably getting hit from behind, otherwise there is no mechanic like that.

crits isn't a concern for heroics. bulk up with stamina will do the most. hardest imo from tank perspective is arcatraz, blood furnace, shattered halls and shadow labs if the plan is to just straight up face tank shit. usually comp will come in to play. if you have ez and reliable cc or kite (hero class mage) it makes things smoother. @chrome echo

I'm a bit confused. I seem to be struggling with my TPS. When I look at all the top guild's prot warriors I barely see them use any Shield Slams or Revenges. When to my understanding it's best to Shield Slam > Revenge > Devastate > Heroic Strike excess rage.

logs rank based on dps, not least damage taken per second or maximum threat per second. there will be a lot of dps priority in play and strategies to chase the dps... you should look a lot further down at 95% percentile to find more "realistic" comparisons.

your loop is ss->rev->deva->deva. aim for 10 ss, 10 rev, 20 deva casts per minute. add hs as rage permits. prot threat is 90% rotation 10% having shaman in your group for wf. for extra burst threat on pull be engi for sappers and making sure you have earth shield/prayer of mending (the threat from the heal applies to you, not the healer casting it) and md.

gearing for 9% hit (6% if you play with boomie) and as much expertise as you can get is pretty much as good as it gets. with guru i assume you mean Gruul? if mt you can equip more crit gear (gladiator gear) since he is very weak post nerf. stand in the rubble to cheese rage.

And with the guru bit I meant someone who's good at looking into Warcraftlogs.

It just confused me seeing how different my logs look compared to top prot warr logs. Deffo is just the DMG vs Threat I tried comparing though. Thanks a lot for the information!

Weird question: How does a Prot Warrior make 5,000 gold in TBC? I've tried farming ore, and it makes some money but our AH is super slow due to low population. I've also tried some of the "gold farms" like Throne of Kil'Jaedon but I find myself needing to eat after only three kills. Help!

It’s not worth the globals for either ability. Whirlwind does much more damage than either. Slam fills most of your globals so none free. 3% crit is huge. Deep wounds is sufficient to keep blood frenzy up.

I know this question is a month old, but I'm going to answer it for the sake of having it out there anyway.

The tl;dr is that Morogrim is not a good match up for prot warriors and you're better off letting a feral druid tank him. The more technical reasons are because Morogrim has a mechanic where his auto swing counts as 2 auto attacks and he will eat through shield block, causing you to take crushing blows at some point. It's not impossible to do with a warrior if you go all out on avoidance/mitigation, but your healers may still hate you and it's a good opportunity to get a dedicated feral tank if you don't have one already because they only become more viable as the expansion continues.

When it comes to that it really depends on the comp you are running. If you have constant dispels and are trying to play aggressively (like with hpal) you probably want to run flurry or blood frenzy for more consistent damage. I don’t really think improved disciplines has any relevant comps besides maybe warrior/Druid but I wouldn’t spec into it even then probably. You’ll do better playing around with your talents and seeing what works best for you since there is no one best choice for all

I can give you some tips if that helps. There aren't that many though in all honesty.

  • Due to your new found powers of getting instant groups, spam dungeons till you're honored and then quest normally afterwards in the associated areas if you want to min/max rep farming. I'd at least do this for Lower City because Shapeshifter's Signet is one of the most useful rings for prot warriors and will last all the way until phase 4 or 5.

  • Go threat heavy early on until you're 70. There isn't much reason to get a ton of defense rating yet until you're starting to look at Kara and heroic dungeons. I would highly recommend working on a DPS set as well for questing and having 1-2 bags full of situational gear is something you'll want to get used to anyway.

  • Make friends with people you like and who are good at their role fast. It's pretty rare to meet DPS that have some form of restraint or are able to adjust their damage output based off the limits of their tank. You will come to appreciate people that bring more to the table than just damage and are able to help you out when things get spicy.

  • Find a good corner to sulk in as people will constantly compare you to pally tanks and their ability to build better aoe threat than you

So I know it's in this discord somewhere and i'll keep looking for it, but, I'm always rage starved no matter what I do. I'm guess i'm not getting my rotation right. I've been playing since Classic released and originally leveled my warrior to 60 and start raiding. I eventually quit my warrior due to this issue and seem to have animosity when I even look at my warrior. I really want to play him but just cannot figure this out. Even using Rage potions which is a temporary fix doesnt seem to help. would only equip dragonstrike on low rage scenarios for example trash or fighting for threat as offtank on void reaver/gruul. you still want something with speed to pump out more hs as long as rage permits, which is almost always when you are tanking a boss.

@charred yarrow AFAIK, the death wish build shines in faster fights (like Sup 2 min fights) so it's way better for farm content.
If fights go longer than that, rampage should pull ahead. (that's the Infoa I gathered, I haven't experienced it myself tho)

On a constant treadmill fight rampage will pull ahead but DW is almost always the better choice in practice. DW is strong when you stack with other CDs like trinket, potion and lust. But bosses aside trash is a considerable part of raiding and blasting packs of trash with DW adds up. But that’s raiding. Until then it doesn’t really matter.

#1 issue is you arent pushing buttons or doing too much hs/slam delaying bt/ms + ww. 60/cd and that is your ideal cpm. For BT it means 10 cpm cus 6s cd.
Second is actually using cds. DW has 3 min and trinkets usually 2. If you raid for 2 hrs you want to basically aim for 60 trinkets and 40 death wish. Obviously you want to stack cds with BL in general but it requires you to do some homework. Monitor average kill times, figure out if you can squeeze in extra usage or if holding is actually better. Third is using sweeping strikes in combo with yellow attacks.

yellow attacks are your abilities. in logs you can check casts per minute. how many casts can you squeeze in within a minute is 60 seconds divided by abilites cd right. so if bloodthirst has 6s cd you want 10 casts every minute. if its lower you arent pushing buttons.

I'm leveling as 2-hand fury and I occasionally tank dungeons for easy XP gains. By not speccing in prot I sometimes have issues holding threat, especially against shammies, I wonder if for my dungeon itemisation I should equip two rings with dodge rating(24 in total) or two rings with total of 14 strength. Strength would increase my DPS and threat, but dodge rating allows more revenge procs, anyone got opinion on this?

Just had a question about prot warrior tanks. Is the t5 4-piece set bonus with the haste bonus proc really good for threat or is there a better option thats good to get? I will probably never have arena rating to get the good gear, so weighing my options...

i know that haste bonus is just a proc or chance when getting hit, which turns people away usually on that kinda proc chance, but i still think it will be better than wearing pvp gear as a prot warrior tank

T5 4p bonus isnt a game changer. It is only a nice bonus for using otherwise decent pieces. T5 helmet as an individual piece is relatively weaker than options like engineering goggles and ideally glove slot would be either double socket gauntlet from KT or one of the expertise choices from kara/alar with teron ones being bis.

Dont need rating to buy the arena pieces. Only current season shoulder and weapon are locked. You need >95 rating to get some points per week (each win up to like 1000 rating gives like 90 points). 5v5 gives more than 3v3 but only barely, especially if you never go much further than 1000-1200 rating. https://tbc.wow-tools.com/tbc_arena_calculator Shows at 1000 rating of 3v3 it takes you 11 weeks to get helm&chest and same rating for 5v5 is 10 weeks. Another option is to just save points already today and buy S3 for 50% price in the off-season (the 1 week between season 3 ending and season 4 begins).

No matter how you spin it using at least 2p S3 is the best choice for warrior for this phase. If you aren't able or willing to go for it then a compromise would be to snag T5 tokens and picking up the merciless pieces. Utilising Merciless head/chest/leg/shoulder gives decent choices for threat and then you already have T5 prot for tankier setups. Sadly T6 prot is not good / worse than T5 if you look at individual pieces. The only T6 prot piece that is solid is legs.

Its an incredibly strong option for two reasons, one being the proc on both weapons obviously - they unfortunately cant both proc at the same time and instead overwrite/refresh duration on the haste buff which does kinda put a damper on it but they are also great for whirlwind damage, as far as being the absolute best option im not positive but you'd probably need to atleast get vengeful mainhand/offhand to compete with them

Double Dragonstrike is mediocre.
Dragonstrike as an off-hand weapon is about equivalent to phase 2 "meh" weapons such as Fang of Vashj or Rod of the Sun King. It performs worse than phase 2 BiS off-hands Talon of Azshara or Netherbane and, by extension, worse than every phase 3 BT/Hyjal weapons and Zul'Aman weapons. It's an okay catch-up OH at best, if you have gold to spare for a fresh warrior. Dragonstrike as a main-hand weapon is unchanged. It's still the best MH after S3 Gladiator Sword/Axe and Warglaive.

Hey guys, i have a dilemma. I want to go fury (am arms atm) and i can craft dragonstrike for my MH. I have Syphon of the nethrazim and Swiftsteel bludgeon as option for OH. Isnt the slower weapon better than the faster one? (so syphon should be way better than swiftsteel), but when i sim it swiftsteel comes ahead by 17dps. Am i missing something?

My only problem with crafting dragonstrike is that this is the phase where it becomes outshined by other weapons from Hyjal and BT. If you have gold/nethers…craft it. But if not, I’d almost try holding out for a better piece.

Keep in mind, S3 weapon is the best non-glaive OH. Means you could keep DS as MH and settle for 1x 2.6 pvp weapon if you have rating and being frugal with arena points is needed. Personally I would craft DS if you have BS, no reason not to. Nether Vortex BOE as well.

Regarding Swiftsteel vs Syphon specifically for OH I would suggest sim. Classic warrior discord has a tool for that. In general you will be cleaving harder with 2 slow weapons but on single target a faster choice might be better. The stats on the items also impact the relative comparison.

Many fury warriors also get double lusted, not sure if thats typical for your raid but if you want to use your cooldowns with lust at the start your kill times are unfortunately slow so your overall dmg is of course going to be slower

If you check ironforge pro for EU pvp Gehennas is basically 100% horde with 21k ish logged chars as of recently and while firemaw is 43 % horde its a massive 36k pop total. The closest horde option for EU-pvp is Golemag at 78% horde with 7,3k total pop. Alliance equivalent would be Earthshaker, 100 % ally with 6,1k pop. Rest of the servers below are almost dead. I play on Earthshaker alliance and believe me it feels pretty dead

That is absolute BS, probably somebody who doesn't understand probability. Each drop is 5% no matter how often you run. By virtue of that you should eventually see a glaive drop after a certain amount of kills due to the chance of seeing one success of rolling the 5% every time, but there is no guarantee, and if you haven't seen a glaive drop by the 15th time the chance is still 5% and exactly .

It lists 5% for both glaives after 1745 kills, which would not be the case if there was some bad-luck protection.
I've also been working on private-servers in the past so at least I know how this is implemented in theory. And people have been saying the same shit. Just don't listen to it, its simple chance at the end of the day which means you can get lucky or unlucky.

Unless your twinking or getting boosted on quests that reward 1hs as soon as they become eligable, upgrading 2 weapons every 10 levels or so is more effort than upgrading 1. On top of that when you dual wield you miss a lot more attacks. Cleave and whirlwind will do a lot more dmg in combo with sweeping strikes as well with a 2h. Ultimately it is a minor difference, pumping quests will yield you xp and you can get through quests with a fishing pole. If your having fun it goes faster.

Ironically pwar becomes the best aoe tank but at the same time worst single target tank defensively. Block is warriors main mitigating tool and t8 onwards boss tankbusters are unblockable. Notable exception being Algalon iirc. You can do all the content for sure, much like you can in TBC, but it will be the weaker choice if you care about that.

fury is not private server meta dps and supposedly takes until icc to really shine. warrior was circle jerked to be unplayable pre tbc but has shown to be worth stacking. would take priv server andys with a huge grain of salt

prot is considered worst tank survivability wise but ironically best aoe tank

p1 wotlk will be same as p1 tbc, one karazhan level of diffuclty 25/10man and 2 onyxias again, so choice of tank won't matter. the only x factor is whether your pushing for speedruns or early achievement runs like deathless Naxx and 3 Drake Sartharions which might skew what is (hard) required/ideal/good enough. as usual, depends more on personal ambition and guild needs. but if your just looking to clear, it won't matter one way or the other.

if you just gonna fuck around, always better to enjoy yourself. pug tank meta will be hard to say, dk/druid/pala is considered better as mentioned but even with a 4th tank spec i think its reasonable to expect tanks will always be in demand, considering there will be both 10 and 25mans to do.

S3 weapons are incredibly free now that Blizzard bumped arena point gains for lower ratings. 1000 rating in 3v3 gives you 800 point ish. The 2.6 weapons cost 1050. So realistially 2 weeks if you get like 1000-1100 rating in 5v5 . @frigid mesa

Prot is best aoe tank in wrath but worst tank defensively. Probably 2nd tps after DK. To the extent tps matters in wrath. Personal Dps potential from warrior probably fine but that is even less important. When not needed to tank you would have dual spec sorted anyways.

You are Correct. Warriors are not usually ”uncrushable”, as its called, outside shield block. However, It’s never worth gearing for it since almost none of the bosses crush in BT and SWP. And those who do it is not critical to account for it. Generally adding layers of high stamina, armor and avoidance gear will be enough to bulk up according to raid needs when tank dmg is a concern

You have sweeping strikes in fury, the convo really ends there when it comes to speed of mowing down mobs for quests. Nothing stops you from using a 2h either until you enter Outland as well.

Yeah it’ll be really difficult unless you are both 95+ parsing in tbc in which case it will just be difficult, it’s hard to fit two warriors into most guild comps. In wrath it may be even more difficult because warriors don’t really shine until ToC and beyond

Dps:

-T7 : sad arms noises , you only need 1 support arms dps for sunder thats it fury is meme more than 1 warrior is meme

-T8. sad arms noises again, only 1 support arms dps fury still meme (ppl will say BRUH FURY DPS no they do slightly more dps than arms but they lose bigtime on being rage starved and arms gives more raid dps by faster and more consistent sunder)

-T9 2 fury is okay. Lots of cleave and multitarget in ToC which mashes well with fury even tho they are still not quite there with the arp

-T10 Tier 1 (not the best tho still loses to crouge and firemage!!!!) so you can bring even 3-4 they fk shit up.

Just equip your best one handers in terms of dps (that isn’t a dagger). Not sure where this guy gets 2.7 speed from. You want 142 total rating for raid, 95 should be fine for 5man. @raw vapor

So i want to make a macro for upcoming wotlk, where i can swap my entire gearset from arms to tanking, but i've tried macro's but with only 255 characters you can't equip everything. And for some reason when I use Itemrack (I set it up and it keeps equipping my set when im already in one of the stances, so sometimes it will un-equip my fishing pole)
